We visited once about a year ago, and it was so good that we had to make a stop during our most recent trip! We had a change of plans on-the-fly, and were luckily able to walk in for lunch around 12:30 on a Sunday. The restaurant was a good mix of tourists and locals, and on a perfect day the outside patio was clear full! We started with a plate of prosciutto and DOP Buffalo Mozzarella - this was a perfect pairing and I loved the flavor of the mozzarella. For the main event, I had their carbonara, and it was outstanding. The richness of the sauce and the bold flavor of the guanchale made for a wonderful dish - it is amazing how good food can be with quality, local ingredients. To finish up, we shared a tiramisu, which was the perfect mix of flavor and far superior than the soggy version we get in the United States. I had been to Abruzzi before and thought their carbonara was the best I have had so when the opportunity to visit again popped up, I wanted to see if that dish was a fluke. It wasn't. I have travelled all over the world, and all over Italy, and carbonara is one of my go to dishes. Here at Abruzzi, it is flawless IMO. Perfectly cooked and sauced the flavors of the guanciale, pasta, and cheese just combine to give you a dish you never want to reach the end of. And our service was impeccable. Our server was friendly, professional, and efficient. He made recommendations when we asked for them and made sure we received exactly what we asked for. The atmosphere is old school Italian restaurant. Indoors is quiet and simple and they do have a few outdoor tables. It's a smaller place so I would recommend you make reservations, especially if you have an indoor or outdoor seating preference. I did not think the offering of spinach and ricotta ravioli could sound better until they offered fresh sage and butter as a sauce. This was a meal I did not picture myself ordering but it blew me away! So simple and delicate but packs a flavorful punch. My husband had their amatriciana and it was cooked to perfection. This was a new dish for us but this was I think my favorite place we had it while in Rome. I noticed a few reviews mentioning "too many Americans" and maybe some bad service. It could have to do with our reservation but, we only noticed people speaking Italian and felt like we did stick out a bit as the only Americans in the room. Came here to have dessert, apparently, if you're not planning on eating a meal there, they refuse service. Basically asked us to leave after we attempted to order our dessert when seated. Originally when we got there we asked to sit inside, he told us there was no seating inside, but then proceeded to let some random people that just walked up after us that spoke Italian and let them sit inside, and no they didn't have reservations. So disappointed in this restaurant. We went there because it was recommended to us. The waiter was an older man who wasn't very friendly but okay whatever. I order soup as a starter and then tortellini. My sister orders veal. We ask for some balsamic and olive oil. Everyone around us was getting served and we were there before them. I ask to get my soup and the waiter seemed agitated that I asked. He then brought out the soup the same time as my sisters veal. Soup was ok, hot but not a lot of taste. My sisters veal had little to no taste. My sister finished and I'm sitting for 15 more minutes. I had to ask where my dinner was. Again he was agitated. The soup was supposed to be before my dinner and both dinners should have been served at the same time. My sister was done at least 15 minutes before I got my food. Finally get my food and it was meh!! The service sucked, the food was the worst meal we've had in Italy. Pick another place to eat, this was a bad choice and I will never go back to this restaurant again. I'm just wondering about the other reviews. We had just finished our morning tour of the Colosseum and were starving when we stubbled upon this little gem. There is both inside and outside seating which is nice. We decided to dine outside since it was warm with a lovely breeze. Being in Rome really makes me wish I drank wine since everyone seems to enjoy it unfortunate for me. The staff was very friend and nice, I have to say no one ever rushes you to leave which is refreshing coming from NY. My husband had the special of the day lasagna and I have the vegetable risotto. My husband said the lasagna was the best he ever had and the noodles just melted in his mouth. The ratio of sauce, cheese and noodles were good and very flavorful. My risotto was nice, the flavor was good and the texture was good not too soft or hard. I would definitely recommend this establishment to anyone visiting the area. We are tourist dufuses. We had just arrived in Rome and our watches hadn't caught up, so we arrived an hour early to meet friends for dinner. The waiter laughed at me, but he was playing...I think. They were all very sweet. We drank wine and nibbled on bread until our friends arrived. We had a very long dinner. I had the Bucatini all Amatriciana. It was good, and I know it's a salty dish, but DAMN. That salt cured pork/bacon was extra salty. I wish I could have tasted the other seasonings more. It wasn't very spicy. Service was very good. Best Carbonara Ever. We go to Abruzzi for one dish, but what a dish. Before we visited Rome for the first time, a friend who had lived there as a seminarian told me to come here for the Rigatoni Carbonara, which he insisted was the best in all of Italy. The Carbonara was incredible and totally different from any other we've ever tasted (in fact, I've never even liked Carbonara anywhere in the United States). Every time we return to Rome, we make sure that our flight arrives early enough so that we can drop our bags at the hotel and run here for lunch. The antipasti choices are also outstanding, particularly the Roman artichokes (Carciofi Alla Romana) and the little onions (Cippolini). Abruzzi is a big favorite of Roman priests, so don't be surprised to find a few priests or even cardinals dining next to you. read more

This is an absolutely marvelous restaurant and well worth visiting when in Rome. Mind you, of course it's practically impossible to pick a bad restaurant in this town. the Romans take pride in their food as most Italians do. "Americani" may find themselves more at home here than other places since it's a big hang-out for the clergy at "The Casa" and "The NAC" but one visit here will tell you there is a reason! I consistently get the carbonara there and it is perfect every time. Al dente pasta and the perfect amount of pepper, eggs, and cheese, served with peas. The arancini are the best in Rome. They are kind enough to offer four types of house "digestive" and it really does help settle a big Roman meal. Remember, the wait staff are professionals, so the service is always excellent, simply mind your manners and don't be "pig American". The only thing worse than that is being German, they hate Germans more.... This is not a tourist place, so kick back and enjoy. It's a wonderful little restaurant. read more

Struggled a bit to find this place, but it's really close to the Trevi Fountain and tucked away. We heard they have a Carbonara to die for, but I was unimpressed :(. Noodles were a bit too al dente (it kept sticking between my teeth like glue) and the sauce was lacking. The bacon bits were really good though. Hubby had the cannelloni which was again, just okay. With so much awesome food around, you might want to try some place else. Prices were good however and food was quick. All tourists and not a local to be found :/. We came here to try their famous Carbonara. Verdict: It lived up to it's name. Good balanced flavors and a nice thickeness. Like every Carbonara should be. I have tried many Carbonaras in Rome and back home in NY. This one is among the best. This might be a subjective opinion since this dish might be a bit too heavy for those who prefer a lighter dinner. Wandering around for somewhere good to eat after leaving the Trevi fountain we found this place. Looked busy, good menu, good prices and the yelp reviews were good! Service was fast, we had caprese salad and bruschetta for starters then a pasta dish each for mains. I had the carbonara after reading the reviews and yes it was lovely, just the right amount and flavours spot on. My partner had the ragu which was also lovely. Avoid this place. Reviews are misleading we went in with high hopes of getting a descent Italian meal. The dishes we got are pictured. The lasagna tasted like what you'd get from the frozen food section of a supermarket--very dry and little sauce. My wife's pasta Cannarelli Abruzzi, had very little sauce, was extremely salty and tasted "off." My wife is a vegetarian and was careful to order a dish without meat. The menu attached showed none. Upon closer inspection, she was given a meat sauce which sickened her. We got our bill and were charged for bread we didn't order or eat. Superb service and cosy restaurant. We were able to order takeaway even tho they usually don't offer this. However, the food were not that great as the reviews say. We ordered lasagna, Vaile, tortellinin and risotto. The lasagna were ok and nothing more, the Vaile were only servered with sause and nothing on the side. The tortellinin were ok and the risotto were good. I don't think the food were as great as the others described before. I'd give them 5 stats for the service but only 3 for the food. :( read more

Super quaint and delicious spot! On a recent trip for work my fiancé found this little gem and brought me back on my trip to see him. The wait staff was friendly and accommodating, helping along those English speakers. My fiancé ordered the Cannelloni and I opted for the tortellini. We washed those down with a bottle of wine and left so full and happy! My cousin is a priest who is currently living in Rome, so when we visited the city of course we had to meet up and I told him to pick the restaurant. Locals know best, right? And Abruzzi really was exactly what my wife and I were hoping for. Specifically, despite being tourists we were trying to avoid tourist traps (we have fallen into them in the past in Rome). The location of Abruzzi is close enough to the Trevi Fountain that I was hesitant, but it was far enough off the beaten path to mostly have other priests eating there when we arrived. Carbonara is *the dish* to have in most Roman restaurants, and Abruzzi's was fantastic, The guanciale was crispy which tasted delicious and added a nice texture to the dish. We really enjoyed the tiramisu which didn't have any trace of rum. Maybe is the Roman way but isn't the American way - for the better, of course. After dinner, we (not my cousin, who was a regular) were surprised with a Digestivo courtesy of the house, which isn't uncommon in Italy I'm told, but was a first for us (again I blame us being tourists). read more

I'm not saying the carbonara here is the best in Rome as I've not sampled nearly enough to make that judgment. I'll just say that this is the best I've had in my life. Off the beaten path, though not too far from the hyper-busy Piazza del Venezia, on a cold winter's day, the Via del Vaccaro was virtually empty. The restaurant was inhabited only by locals, not a tourist in sight, and the main occupants were priests at lunch as well as a few government types...a bit intimidating when dining by yourself. The ambiance was old school, dark woods, subdued lighting, and white table cloths. This would be a good restaurant in which to hatch plots, discuss the ephemera of Medieval Latin, or seduce someone. I loved it. I ordered a salad and the carbonara. If you know Bernini's sculpture of St Theresa in Ecstasy...well, this is no doubt what she was having spiritual orgasms about. No, not the love of Jesus...the love of this carbonara. It was so luscious and imbued with the flavor of pancetta, pancetta, pancetta. Not in an overwhelming way, but in a comforting, wrap me in your warmth on a cold winter's day sense. It was bliss. Rarely have I know such bliss. This moment of transcendence. This was it. And the complimentary glass of limoncello at the conclusion of this meal...oh my. Along with an espresso, I was ready to face wind, rain, hail, and the overstuffed buses of Rome for another day.
