At the end of the meal we were pressured to provide a 10% gratuity--the first time such a thing happened to us in our European travels. Rather than refuse, I decided to provide the tip, but upon returning to my hotel, confirmed that this is known to happen to non-Italians at some restaurants. If you do choose to eat here as a non-Italian, buyer beware. We had the salmon, gnocchi, steak, a salad, and some wine. All were good, but, clearly not worth being taken advantage of by the staff. Mazze was recommended by our Airbnb host as a top place for traditional pasta in Rome. I am not exaggerating when I say this was the best pasta I've ever had in my life. We ordered the white truffle carbonara and ossobuco along with some house wine. The carbonara was so incredibly creamy and flavorful and the noodles tasted fresh. If you like truffle flavor, there was just the right amount without being overpowering. The ossobuco was tender and rich. I didn't write down what type of wine we tried, but it was really good and affordable. We were in Italy for 2 weeks and ate a lot of pasta and this was by far the best we had during the whole trip. read more

This was one of our favorite dinners in Rome. Our waiter was amazing. Super knowledgable, funny, great service overall. Ambiance was a classy vibe, great for dinner. I really can't recommend Mazze enough!!! We traveled around Italy for 10 days and Mazze was BY FAR the best, most authentic experience we had, and could ever ask for. Yes, the food was amazing, we loved it so much we came back a second night. But the thing that truly drew us in, the driving force behind this review was neither the food, nor the (absolutely gorgeous) atmosphere, but the people. Giovanni, our waiter, gave us the most memorable and most stand out experience of our entire trip. We have been all over Southern Italy, and while every moment has been special in its own way, Giovanni truly embodied what we (as foreigners) always wished for, someone who would meet us where we were at, and take the time to provide us with an experience that enriches and satisfies not just our pallets, but our souls. After the second night walking away from this establishment, I couldn't help but ruminate on a time in the states, when I had an experience such as I had on my last two nights in Italy at Mazze, and the answer is, I never have. There is something truly special about the experience me and my family had, and it is one that you don't get in your home country, it is one completely born out of nothing but kindness. A choice that the server makes to treat you to something magical, an investment into your (the diners) happiness, despite your cultural differences and the fact that you may never get to return. They make a choice, to treat you like family. Giovanni and the entire staff at Mazze showed us the kind of love that Italy is known for, but that is often illusive in a city where rude tourists and rushed encounters make it difficult to forge true connection. Instead, they take their time, they show you love, and respect and hospitality, and all you need to do, is sit back and enjoy, savor the special moments and be grateful. Please do yourself the favor of going to Mazze, ask for Giovanni, tell him that Erin sent you (it may make him smile) and then prepare yourself for one of those meals, where you walk away already thinking about what you need to do to make it happen again, and being so thankful that you read a review and took a chance. read more

Excellent pasta courses. We went here because Hostaria Romana (Yelp's no. 1 carbonara joint at least when I searched) required a reservation which we did not have and this was just up the block. It's smaller with a less touristy vibe than Hostaria and blows the doors off the other places we had pasta at. It's a real gem. All of the food we had was beautifully simple and highlighted the amazing ingredients and fundamental Italian technique. The wine list was excellent and reasonably priced. Caprese salad and bresaola with its bed of arugula and fine shavings of pecorino were an excellent, light, flavorful way to kick things off, and the waiter recommended a great pistachio based desert. But the real stars were the carbonara, cacio e pepe, and amatriciana. All came off as just perfectly prepared Italian comfort food. The staff was great too. 5 stars all around read more

We arrived in Rome on a Sunday and found that most of the restaurants we had carefully researched ahead of time/had been recommended to us were closed. Our hotel concierge was of little assistance in providing alternative suggestions, so jet-lagged, hangry and exasperated we did a cursory search for "best restaurants near me" and decided to take a chance on Mazze. I was a little skeptical at first - the restaurant is tucked away and lacks curb appeal, but it ended up being the best meal we had during our entire stay in Italy. We had the burrata con pomodoro, carbonara with truffle and saffron chicken. Burrata and carbonara were out of this world - fresh, flavorful and light. Chicken was ok; I appreciated that it was a simple dish and not overladen with starches, sauces and sides like in the US and felt like the right amount of protein to balance out the meal. The sommelier was wonderful and spent a great deal of time talking to us about the wine we had chosen, sharing interesting tidbits on the history of Italian winemaking and how the process has evolved.
