It is their 80th anniversary. Today they celebrated with $.80 crispy tacos (shredded beef or shredded chicken) and $.80 margaritas (they were big!!) Everyone was super friendly. They immediately gave us a big bowl of chips and 2 salsa with big glasses of water. I grew up in Phoenix and was a regular at the Macayos on Camelback Road (now part of Scottsdale Fashion Square). Ive eaten many times at the one on Central, and the one in Tempe off of Mill Ave. All 3 are closed. They moved the one in Tempe to Rural and the 202. The one in Ahwatukee is bright and cheerful. Lots of space. Not too loud. Great happy hour. Today is busy but not too crowded. We stuck with the taco deal, but it looked everyone else was ordering off the menu! read more

Macayo's Mexican Food - 2 shredded beef tacos bursting with meat, lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes (minus one bite-- i couldn't wait and they didn't disappoint!) - Mexican Near Me - Phoenix, Arizona

Food quality dtopped off on the lunch visit yesterday. Big guy waiter didn't know if the chicken was chicken breast. He said there are no thighs, but dark meat was found in the soup and another dish. Limited and boring lunch specials as well. read more

Restaurant was empty at noon. Poor servers are trying but the food isn't what it used to be. Eaten at Macayo's on Central since 1977. I wax a loyal customer, but food quality is so inconsistent now I hav e no desire to return. read more

One evening after a rough and long work day, some coworkers and I stopped here as I kept saying a margarita was an absolute must. I had my mind set on a prickly pear margarita, and I knew just where I wanted to get one as I've stopped by other Macayo's locations. Upon entering, the hostess said she'd be right back. We ended up waiting almost 10 minutes, which definitely didn't start the visit off well as she didn't apologize for an extended wait (only people waiting at hostess stand). Though it did give us time to take in all the decor as it is very decorated at their establishments. Once seated, Kayla was fantastic, friendly, and quick to bring out our food. The calabacitas is fantastic as always and enjoyed the fajitas for the first time. All very good. Kayla definitely recovered the experience and made the day better. Who can be sad with a margarita in hand? Overall, a good location and great for margaritas. read more

Another visit on a summer Saturday around noon and it was still 1/3 full. They offered a booth with a view of the golfers, so we took that. The booth was also in range of the TV, which had college football. We ordered the same thing as last visit, since it was so epic. Our service, while very pleasant, was quite slow today. We waited about 10 mins to be seated, another 8-10 to be greeted by our server and then about 10 more for our drinks and food. I would guess that he was busy tending bar and wasn't able to keep up with his server duties. Our food, while not to the 'epic' level of our last visit, was still excellent. The gluten free corn crisp was rather mundane and the refried beans on my plate were more bland than last time. We will be back for more again. read more

I have been eating at Macayos for almost 40 years. It is a staple for me and my family, my kids grew up eating there and I e considered Macayos to be the best Sonoran AZ style Mexican in the valley. Today we celebrated our daughters 28th bday and had by far the worst experience ever. The server was haphazard walking away from our table two times without getting everyone's orders. Then when the food came out he told me they didn't have what I ordered. So by the time my new order came out everyone e else was done eating. Then there was no sorry, no reduction in my bill, when I asked they had a bad attitude and gave back $3 on a $150 bill. Ya, I'm done. Great job at losing a lifelong customer. read more

The food was average but the service was great. We sat in the bar area and had a few drinks and tacos. I can't say I'll return but the experience was decent. read more

The server and service Wes excellent. Ambiance was fine but it seemed warm even with ceiling fans running. Food was not very good. Guacamole was tasteless and the chimichangas were not much better than frozen ones. read more

I honestly don't know how this place stays open for business. We went in on a Saturday evening and were told there is a half hour wait with 90% of the tables empty. There were people who had been waiting for over half hour who got up and left. They are always short staffed, and the staff they have have ZERO manners and are far from any sort of customer service. Food quality has gone down along with service and everything else. It's a shame. Management either needs to be changed or they need to rethink everything. read more

Walked in a little before 8 pm to a semi packed bar still some seats available asked the bar tender if the tables were open seating. He proceeded to tell me that he was all out of food no more tacos. Everything was gone. At first I thought he was joking but he said it with a straight face so I walked out and left. Stay away from this place because apparently they run out of food and don't care read more

Went in about 5:15 on a Monday. One table seated in the dining room. Six people ahead. Of us and we are told hosted said we would have to wait 20-25 minutes because they were short on servers. One man and another couple were offer to sit in the bar..,, one party which arrived after us. In the meantime, one server just stood doing nothing in the dining room. After 30 minutes and no one else being seated, we left. Empty dining room. Server standing around and hostess seating no one except two tables in the bar. Great way to run a business! read more

I went the Macayo's, off of Baseline, and Dobson. The food was good, however, the service was awful. We were sat down at a table with no Sweet and Low, so I went to a few tables, and found the artificial sweetener. One of servers, had the ordacity, to question me about doing that. Even told me, that I could have asked fir the sweetener. Then, they brought over another container, and said it made more sense to just change out the containers from the table, from there perspective. As I was not asking for a commentary, and apparently, having to do the jobs of these servers; i would recommend choosing another Mexican resturant. This one, is after all, not too far down from a resturant featured on the PBS show "Check Please." I am sure the service has to be better, and the servers do there jobs, without feeling like they have to question paying customers. read more

New owners. Doesn't honor Macayo's points. Different happy hour days and menu! Coors light bottles 6.50!! Are you kidding me?? Beware not the HH spot we once enjoyed- shorten hours, smaller menu, crazy prices. read more

The margaritas weren't great, no chunky salt or fancy glass. No queso dip for kids (maybe that's not common here we're from Indiana). Service was great. Food came out fast. Chicken fajitas enchiladas were amazing. Best I've ever had actually! Overall good, but not overall amazing. read more

After a horrible experience with Bubba's 33, we were still hungry. We decided to meet up with family at Macayo's instead--and I'm glad we did. We were greeted and seated within minutes, even with a party of 12. The service was on point, the food was delicious, and overall it was a great experience. I think I'm officially sticking to what I know--every time I venture outside my comfort zone, things seem to go downhill. read more

Have enjoyed Macayo's for YEARS. SADLY the exterior/parking lot looks SO BLIGHTED. Surprising to see that ownership (and management) has done nothing to clean up the mess left from a storm from LAST summer. WEEDS growing along the easement with the golf course and in the parking lot. Wouldn't bring anyone from out of town here or any guest for that matter. First impressions count. read more

Stopped in for lunch, first time in. Food & drinks were great and so was service from Sonny. Will be back!

The food was not seasoned nor cooked properly. Our server, Nailoni B., forgot our water, and I asked for refills did not bring our water when we asked because I gi as, she did not notice after walking by a few times. Since she took our order at 2:58 pm, we asked for the Happy Hour special that started at 3:00 but she said no so my husband ate iff the lunch special that ended at 3:00 pm When the bill came she overcharged us because she said she put our order in at 3:02. She had an attitude when my husband asked about the overcharge. FOOD was NASTY and our server had a poor attitude! I will never eat there again. Please try Carolina's! We sat down at the table at 2:58 pm and she would not give us the Happy Hour special. When the bill came, she charged us extra money since she said she put our order in at 3:02 so she did not give us the lunch special but again could not give us Happy Hour special after 2:00 pm. Nail oni then got an attitude when she was asked to take off the extra charge. read more

Came here after my golf round, you can see it after the turn. Got the chicken enchiladas they were decent. The bartender was the main highlight, I believe she said her name was Cierra. She had a great smile and a "bubbly" personality. My food took over 20 min but Cierra made the time fly by, made a phenomenal margarita! Had plenty of em too! I actually went back a couple days ago and she was a server that day, was just happy to be in her section! Thumbs up to Cierra -Mike read more

now i remember why its been so long coming to this location, was at the restaurant today for cinco de mayo and was there almost two hours without my meal , server jasmine in the bar didnt even acknowledge me for over 20 mins after i sat down one of the worst servers ive had , they said it was the busiest day of the year but hardly anyone was working to account for it , this location definitely needs improvement on training and staffing before i consider returning , now that its almost 9pm no food i had to leave something has to change , came here a year ago and service quality wasnt much better . read more

Came here during happy hour, the guacamole and salsa needed a lot of salt, the chips were good, I got the California burrito, it could've been a. Little better, I felt like they just mostly stuffed it with veggies and guacamole & not very much chicken, I did not like that it didn't even come with a side of rice or beans. This will be my last time giving this place a try till they get better. Our waiter didn't even give us his name and just felt really rushed when ordering. read more

This location has really gone downhill since COVID. Prior to that, this was one of my favorite restaurants. My wife and I would go there at least once a week. We knew the staff and we felt welcome. Fast forward five years, prices have skyrocketed and the food really isn't that great. My wife and I still go to this location on occasion with hopes things are improving, but we are usually disappointed. Last night at 5:30, we stopped to get a Happy Hour drink. The restaurant was nowhere near full and there were seats at the bar (where we usually sit), but we were told the bartender was 15 minutes behind in making drinks, so we would have to wait 15 minutes in order to sit at the bar. Crazy! Wait 15 minutes to get a seat to order a beer in a half empty restaurant? No thanks. I'll just go home and have a beer. FYI, my wife and I have been going to Valle Luna in Chandler the last few years. Much better service and better food. The drive is 15 minutes further, but worth it. read more

Great food. Sunny was our server and as always he was friendly, knowledgable and was great to see again.

Ordered the signature sampler to go. Three of the items were burnt to a crisp and they forgot to give us the queso dip. The restaurant was not busy at the time of pick up. I will take ownership of not checking the bag before leaving. I should know better with the way service is these days. read more

Daniel was the best server!! Quick and attentive service and even better food. Thanks

Our server Daniel was great! Very attentive, helpful, and friendly! Funny, kind, gentle, very strong, and did i mention funny?

My family and I visited a couple of months ago, and at the start, everything seemed to be going really well. The service was good, and we were looking forward to a nice meal together. I was dining with my 2-year-old toddler, who was understandably hungry. She became a bit impatient and started crying, not screaming or being disruptive, just crying like a tired, hungry child does. I held her, comforted her, and reassured her that her food was coming. I had even ordered her meal first for this exact reason. Once her food arrived, she settled down immediately. We had been seated by the staff in the bar area, as the other section was closed. During this time, a couple sitting nearby, who appeared to have had several drinks, began reacting negatively to my child. This escalated into a confrontation where they told us we shouldn't be sitting in the bar area with a toddler, despite the fact that we were placed there by the restaurant. The situation went on for about 15 minutes before a manager stepped in and apologized to both parties. However, this is where the experience became especially disappointing for me. While the manager did briefly speak with my family, he spent a significantly longer time engaging with the other couple, even sharing laughs with them. What made me feel particularly overlooked was what happened next. The manager offered complimentary margarita glasses to others seated in that section, including the couple who confronted us, yet our table was not acknowledged in the same way. We didn't receive any gesture of understanding or even a meaningful follow-up. As a parent, I understand that not everyone is comfortable around children, and I do my best to be respectful of others when dining out. But in this situation, I felt judged by other guests and, more importantly, unsupported by the restaurant staff. Instead of feeling heard or reassured, I left feeling dismissed and overlooked. I hope the restaurant can take situations like this more seriously in the future and ensure that all guests feel equally valued and supported. read more

This Macayo's is in shambles. The owners definitely don't care at all about this place and it shows. The outside is trashy with a very embarrassing parking lot. Their blender has been broken for weeks- what kind of restaurant with a bar can't make frozen drinks?! I do want to commend the staff, though. They are friendly and sweet and they deserve better from the bums running this place. read more

First time in a few months as we only live 1/2 mi. Away. Waitress was friendly but she got NO help from barmaid. We waited for our drinks that were made and while our waitress was in back waiting on our order, the barmaid passed our table 2x and did not even attempt to bring the drinks over to the table right in front of the bar. Everyone seemed like they wanted the day over at 1:30 pm. Restaurant was EMPTY except for us and 2 tables in bar area. Had the taco deal they advertise for $.99 each. BUT side of refried beans $2.29 EACH. what a ripoff. Also had a luke warm mexican pizza 8" for $8. We'll stick to Papa Johns. Won't be returning as the food is just mediocre. read more

We came here for happy hour and as long as you seat in the bar area you get happy hour prices. I was very impressed with how much food you get for the value. You get unlimited free chips and salsa and a free cheese crisp with your yelp check in. I ordered their beef mini chimichanga's - 6 mini chimichanga's with guacamole and sour cream. I tried their signature salsa on my mini chimichanga's and they're so good. I used to go to Macayo's in Tucson growing up all of the time. I moved to Denver and heard that they had closed so I figured I would never be able to eat there again. I was wrong! I had no idea they had locations in Phoenix so I was surprised when I looked up Mexican food places while visiting I was shocked to see there was one down the street from where we were staying. We stopped in for dinner and they were pretty busy but the bar was open. We sat at the bar and ordered margaritas. The bartender was friendly and kind of busy with the few people sat at the bar and making drinks for the restaurant. She took a bit to take our order, but you could tell that she was dealing with stuff. We ordered our food and enjoyed the delicious chips and salsa. I love their salsa. Our food arrived piping hot, but one of my sides was incorrect. They quickly brought out the correct side and I ended up getting more food than I ordered. Oh well, breakfast for the next day. Everything we had was delicious. My husband got his tamales smothered in baja sauce and fell in love with it. I miss this place and wish I could stop in more often. I feel like they are a good Arizona staple. read more
