This was my first at the Macado's in Radford, having been a regular of the Blacksburg location for years. The menu is the same, and hasn't changed in quite a while- every sandwich you can think of is on there. The food was up to par with the Blacksburg location, but the service was really lacking. It took quite a while to even order, then almost 25 minutes for the sandwiches to come. Drinks stood empty for quite a while, and our server was nowhere to be found. We eventually had to flag down another server, but honestly none of them were very helpful. Disappointing overall because of this. read more

In the area for vacation and this was my first time at Macado's. I had the BoBagger, my wife ordered the Reuben with Corned Beef. My goodness, both were huge in size and very good taste wise. My shaved steak was very tender, the Corned Beef on my wife's sandwich was fresh and full of taste. We aren't entitled enough to think we deserve random restaurants to cater to our every whim and prepare everything we order to our exact preferences. Stopped here on a Saturday afternoon. Place was dead for the most part. The menu can be a little overwhelming with all the choices. The sandwiches are unique, but don't expect much from the sides. I got chips and they were literally a snack size bag of Ruffles. Lots of TVs and projectors on the bar side, so could be a good place to watch some games. While the service and the food were fine, the place is filthy. Every picture and wall hanging is covered in dust and those closest to the table have food and fingerprints that look like they have been there for a long time. It seems like this is a problem with most Macado's locations. Even more gross is that the table was not wiped down before we were set and my folder (work lunch) stuck to the table and had several sticky particles of food now covering the folder. My hubby said that the sandwich menu has not changed since he was a teenager (and he is now 37). We came here for lunch and everything was very tasty. My husband got burlesque and he really enjoyed it (Huge sandwich!). He upgraded to homemade chips with French onion dip for $2 which were good but not $2 extra good. My in-laws got turkey trot upgraded $2 for French fries. The sandwich was massive and delicious, but the fries tasted like Sysco warehouse fries which were just okay. I got a pastrami Reuben and it was salty and meaty and exactly what I was craving for. We also got beef chili which I thought it was only $4 for a bowl but ended up to be $8 on the bill. A true local staple. I've been coming here since they opened. Food is always good and always more than you can eat. Service isn't always prompt, so as long as you are patient, you'll be fine. My favorite sandwiches are the honeymooner and the reuben. Delicious. Good variety of appetizers also. They have a separate bar section for sports enthusiasts. read more

The wings here suck,every time I've gotten some the bone in kind all have broken bone pieces in them,and they are over sauced with little to no meat. The French Fries are cold and half the time hard. Sad to see a staple local flavor go downhill. It's hit or miss here now. Issues: slow to welcome and get drinks, very long wait times for appetizers and food ( 1.5 hrs), inconsistent delivery (May get sandwich before appetizer, item may be totally omitted and forgotten but on your bill), burned food, wrong food (titanic is prime rib but I basically got a steak 'em sandwich and when I asked about it I was told that's the correct meat and it is prime rib - thin sliced roast beef is NOT prime rib), portion sizes wrong, etc. Have given this place multiple chances in the past year. Other times it's not so bad but definitely not the quality of years past. Overall restaurant is dirty as well. Floors are slick with grime and a safety hazard. Wish I had a proposed solution. I know many places are struggling with staffing, but I don't think all the issues here are due to staffing. That's an over used excuse. Just sad is all I can say. I think the employees are trying, but there is a lack of organization and quality assurance. read more

First time at the Macado's in Radford. I'm not sure if our waiter was drunk or high, but he had a lot of problems trying to understand the seriousness of a food allergy. All we needed was to know the ingredients of two products, and he couldn't even do that. (And that included bringing out box tops and labels for other products-why? I have no idea.) Here at Radford this is an awesome place. They have an extensive menu with soups, salads, burgers, tacos, sandwiches and wraps. I got the Cobb salad (delightful), hubby got the muffuletta and son got the Julius Caesar. All in all very good size meal and very yummy. read more

We eat as a group at Radford Macado's once a month and I've stop there while in Radford. I used to love their French Onion Soup. Every Macado's made their soup the same and it was terrific-not anymore. I feel they went to bagged soup instead of making it themselves. Not sure, but I told my waitress how crappy it was and she said it's from a bag. How unfortunate-I hope all Macado's don't change to these weak onion soup. Now it taste like every other restaurant that sells onion soup-weak and particularly cooked onion pieces. Very disappointing. read more

I have been going to Macado's across Virginia for years. One noticeable trend is that the quality of the food has been going down for some time. I think tonight was my last night of eating Macado's ever again. I ordered my usual online for pick up and when I arrived at the designated time my food was not ready and there was additional 10 minutes wait . Not too big of a inconvenience, however, even with an online order they got a portion of it wrong which was simply I swapped out the bread for another type of bread. That wasn't the final straw. The final straw was the quality and taste of my macaroni salad side. Macado's used to have the best macaroni salad, however, tonight was simply nothing but macaroni mixed with mayonnaise and had dried out. The sad part was that they had a label on it stating it was made that day and yet it was tasteless and old. read more

Great food! When l first entered, I noticed how amazing the place was decorated. There were about 6-7 of us and we were seated immediately. Waitress attended to us fast and drinks were offered. NO ONE ASKED FOR ID WHEN WE ORDERED OUR ALCOHOLIC DRINKS! Spinach dip and artichoke appetizer tasted great. The food took FOREVER to come to the table, it seemed like. The waitress got the wing orders messed up and handed people the wrong wings (which confused everyone). I got the cheeseburger with fries. My burger was HUGE so I had to cut it in half. I asked for well done but biting into my burger, it was only medium well. The burger still tasted great. The fries were crispy and not greasy at all! The wait for the food was well worth it. Been coming here since 1995 and it is fantastic - biggest menu I've ever seen - literally something for ever person. Decor is awesome - they've recently renovated the bar area and it's so nice. This is a staple of RADFORD UNIVERSITY as well as the town of RADFORD - you can't come to RADFORD without stopping here. My all time favorite sandwich: SHERLOCK HOLMES - yum! If you want to have Sunday lunch at the Radford location around 12, don't. They have an unadvertised wing-day (or at least no where advertised on web or Facebook). We Got there at 12, ordered at 12:30...finally got our food at 1:45!! Manager said it was due to lack of fryers. And when our food DID finally come, it clearly had been sitting while the fried foods needed to wait in line for the fryer...if a business is going to host things like this, they need to make sure they have the proper equipment to serve everyone properly and efficiently. Oh & And this was for a birthday lunch.... Very disappointed in how this day went. The only good thing was the company of my family! Stopped in to Macado's for dinner late on a Friday night because my dad and I chose Radford as the stop in our route moving me from NC to MD. We sat at the bar rather than in the dining room. The bartender was friendly and attentive. Our food came out pretty quickly. I got the buffalo chicken wrap and my dad got a french dip sandwich. The food was decent. It hit the spot after a long day. This place seems like it's one of the places for students from Radford University to hang out. As we were sitting there the bar area got a little bit more crowded with a younger crowd. read more

Ah, the appeal of the hometown hangout--many memories were made at Macado's for me, and, even though sometimes there is a real love/hate relationship going on with the location and atmosphere (a strange mix of the local college crowd, local teens, and families), Macado's still holds a special place in my heart. Looking at the menu with "health-conscious" eyes now, I can see a lot of the sandwiches are probably not the healthiest at all. Actually, a lot of the sandwiches are probably overrated with the neat names and such, but they're still fun to order. For the longest time, my "go-to" sandwich was the Sherlock Holmes. The desserts have always been ginormously satisfying....The French Twist especially. Also, the mixed drinks have been great as well. Service has varied over the years (hey, I've been coming to Macado's since I was a young schoolgirl); sometimes service has been great, sometimes....not so great. But the atmosphere is a "flexible" one, with all the random trinkets and displays for young children to be entertained with, and the maze-like layout for teens and college kids to feel like they have their own "little world" inside of the restaurant to talk amongst themselves. Well, I'll probably be visiting Macado's for quite awhile whenever I return back to Radford. (P.S. Visiting Macado's yesterday made me strangely feel homesick for SF though...maybe because it made me miss Yelp.) read more

I should admit up front that I'm biased when it comes to Macados. Their long, folded menus (including the sandwich with the questionable sausage clip art) have a place in my heart unlikely to be trumped by another restaurant known for its sandwiches. There's a huge gorilla that looms over some of the booths, a creepy eggman on a bicycle, and old business and road signs that I absolutely adore. The true beauty of Macados is: karaoke nights. If you go enough times, you get to know the regulars (a friendly bunch) and, for me, it got easier to get up and sing my heart out every week. We went regularly for three years on Thursdays; women got in for free, the drinks aren't too expensive (unless you're getting something fancy, then it'll cost you about $7, which strikes me right in my small-town Virginia wallet.) The friendly, funny DJ (Rob), the excellent, overworked waitstaff, and the good mood of the crowd all contribute to make Macados a great place to pass an evening in Radford. The sandwiches are good, though I have to request no mayonnaise because they put on too much for my tastes. My friend Caitlin adores the black and bleu salad; almost everyone I know opts for a quesadilla occasionally when they've had one too many sandwiches. The fries are pretty plain, but everyone else I know really likes them. They offer free refills on drinks and we've never been rushed out the door. read more

Macado's went above and beyond on their recent renovation. The bar and patio look amazing. I'm glad to see some great Virginia beers on tap as well. The management and staff are really friendly and helpful, especially Lee (one of the managers). He went out of his way to accommodate myself and my family for a wonderful experience. Having been to Macado's before and likie it. We decided to go back while visiting Radford. We arrived shortly after 1 pm to a fairly empty restaurant. The host attempted to seat us near the door in a raised dining area that held 8 tables. 2 were occupied and 6 were empty but completely un-bussed! We were asked to wait a moment while a table was cleared. And by the time we finished our meal, 1 table had yet to be cleared. No sense of urgency here. The menu is very large and we always have trouble choosing but are always very glad when our sandwiches arrive. Haven't ever been disappointed with our meals but think this place could be better Managed. 2 stars for service and cleanliness. 4 stars for food read more

I have never been to a macado's or even any restaurant with ad bad of service as this place does. The servers take forever and I don't really understand because you're making sandwiches half the time. The waitress messed up 2 of our orders and then when our food was served she failed to remember they didn't have the item. I usually do not care about service this much but it's always this bad. When the checks came most were messed up and we had to wait 10 minutes just for her to come back. And then didn't leave a pen to sign the checks.
