Add a pickled beet salad and you have a one-of-a-kind dining experience for two. And, the menu descriptions are both enticing and hilarious. Want a unique experience with a comforting ambience, and delightful waitstaff? Come to downtown Rockland. This restaurant would be at-home in Portland's elevated dining scene, but thankfully it's right here on the midcoast. And, the parking is easy.

Sat at the bar since they were quite busy and haven't had a chance to clear a few tables. Restaurant reminds you of grandma's house, rustic, chic tables and chairs, mismatched dinnerwares and the whole ambiance playing "killin jive" from the 1940's. I wasn't born then but the whole vibe reminds you of that era that I only get a pleasure to watch on TV. Now for the food... Jonah's crab as you can expect was sweet and delicious but a pain to eat using your fighting tools however, the dip was heavenly. BF had the burger, he was surprised that you can't modify it, but thoroughly enjoyed how unique it was, I told him, the chef takes pride how he prepares his food, so you either take it as it is or get something else. Keep an open mind. And I had the overnight beef shank, wow, simple yet delicious, fork tender and luscious marrow. The celery and fennel salad added brightness to the dish and the blue cheese wasn't overwhelming. And I don't like blue cheese and this creativity made me wanting it more. The dish isn't a huge portion, but surprisingly it got me full that I left a few bites of the beef and the salad. For drinks, I had the Rosé and he had the New England India pale ale, light and bubbly. Service was okay, a little slow in the beginning and as the night went on, our server became friendlier.

We arrived early and found a spot in the very small lot they have next to the building. There were plenty of street spots open within walking distance as well. The whole area fills up starting in late morning, so I would plan your trip and know all of your parking options in advance so that you aren't driving 5 miles an hour down the road looking for parking. LOL There is usually a wait, so just be prepared for it. I was able to put our name on the list and we walked around the area. Our server was great - wow was she energetic. Zipping around, smiling and engaging with all of the customers. Our food was delicious!! The sticky bun...we managed to snag one of the last few left. Again, get there early if you don't want to miss out. The corned beef hash - amazing Biscuits - YUM Gravy - savory goodness. Home fries - flavorful and not too greasy. Eggs - perfect! I highly recommend this place and I hope to be able to return again soon, during the non-tourist season.

This cozy breakfast and lunch spot is popular with locals and visitors, so you'll likely have to wait for a table. It is definitely worth the wait, but If you're in a hurry, check to see if a seat is available at the counter. Service at Home Kitchen is warm and welcoming, and you're in for a treat if you're lucky enough to sit in Zan's area (short for Suzanne). I couldn't decide between a tuna sandwich or a grilled cheese, and she suggested combining both into a tuna melt. Brilliant! Along with a shared order of large fries, it was a tasty and filling lunch. The best part? All of it was gluten free! Home Kitchen bakes their own GF bread and pastries, and they are far superior to grocery-store GF baked goods. Even though we were sated from lunch, Zan encouraged us to order dessert, since they had a GF chocolate cupcake with salted caramel frosting. On her recommendation, we got two cupcakes to go - a GF chocolate cupcake for me, and a pumpkin cupcake with maple cream cheese frosting for my friend -- which we enjoyed later in the day from the comforts of home. Wow. Super delicious. More please!

I was born and raised in Maine and come back a couple times a year to see my mom here in Brunswick…read more I hadn't been yet to the Ram and Bull which took over a previous restaurant spot, and decided to give it a try based on the fact that one of their weekly specials was lobsters stew. Let me be clear, I am typically disappointed over and over by the lobster stew I have in Maine. In my mind, it should be classic, with milk, butter, Sherry, and lobster meat. I've been searching for this version from my childhood for the past 30+ years and I finally found it here. Have they added a tiny garnish of rosemary to the top? Yes. Does it make me angry or detract from the sweet perfect flavors of the stew? No. And the lobster meat in the stew was tender, as it should be, rather than having simmered way too long and being tough and chewy. Their crabcakes also were nice and generous, although I don't love the spicy remoulade (I feel it's too strong for delicate crab flavor) and they were a bit soft and mushy for me. However, I will use them tomorrow with some fresh lobster meat I have and make the most amazing eggs Benedict. Ha. I'm looking forward to being back during my stay and trying more items from the menu! Oh, and don't sleep on the service here, it was excellent. From several people asking me how my meal was and just saying hello, to the amazing Travis behind the bar with his big fabulous personality. Yay!

STEPH JUDGEMENT: Fun eatery with some unexpected vegetarian options…read more The hubby and I stopped in for a weekday lunch with a friend who'd been there before. It had that classic old timey tavern look, with lots of dark polished wood, and their menu, featuring comfort/pub fare, was in keeping with the ambiance. I had their crab cakes, which weren't too bready or greasy and came with a tasty spicy creamy sauce. I also had a cup of their tomato soup, which had tiny grilled cheese sandwich bites on a skewer perched on the bowl--such a fun idea! Accompanied by a glass of crisp chenin blanc, it was an awesome lunch. The hubby enjoyed his beet Reuben, which isn't something you see on a lot of menus. Our friend had the chicken pot pie, which he thought was just so-so. He liked the puff pastry crust but the filling didn't quite do it for him. Our server was friendly and funny and we had a great time overall.
