Saying I LOVE Mabu Generation would probably be an understatement. I'm more so OBSESSED. Their menu covers everything you could possibly crave from a taiwanese restaurant. This is my first time at the Markham location, i've only gone to their downtown location in the past. Quality is pretty much the same. I came with a group of four, we were seated immediately and were asked to place our order via QR and website. What's impressive is that there's an option to delay your orders in case you would like to space our your dishes as part of the app. Our order: - The Japanese Style Sukiyaki (H05), the broth is very sweet and addicting. We can here for lunch right when they opened at 11am on a Saturday. Very clean, well decorated and big space. All the menus were on the table and you could see the extensive menu from scanning the QR code on your phone. We ordered the Japanese beef sizzling plate, sukiyaki soup with rice and a brown sugar sesame fried bread roll. The food was very well seasoned and tasty. The sukiyaki was what I needed on a cold day. It was filled with egg, mushrooms, tofu, tempura shrimp and much more, with a size of rice. The sizzle beef was great with rice. The bathroom was very clean, the seats had an automatic plastic rotation system so it allowed new users to have a fresh piece on the seat for sanitary purposes. So when you enter, there's instructions on how to use it. I wish more restaurants had this! read more

Trying out some new items that Mabu has and was kinda disappointed. We got the japanese style cream and garlic udon with shrimp tempura, grilled sliced beef and chicken with bbq sauce and mapo tofu on rice, and braised pork trotters on rice. We originally wanted the taiwanese style grilled spicy pork trotters but they got our order wrong so we ended up with the braised pork trotters on rice. My friend and I made dinner plans in Markham over the weekend and wanted to come to Mabu at FMP. I called in advance hoping to make a reservation as we both do not live in the area and she's bringing her young son. Unfortunately, the staff who answered the phone advised they do not take reservations. Since my friend wanted to go, I arrived earlier to get in the queue for a table. At the time I queued up for the restaurant, the staff told me it will be approximately forty minutes wait for a table, which I was ok with knowing it's the weekend. I took a walk around then received a notification by text and shortly afterwards an automated phone call that my table is ready and to report to the host within five minutes to secure my table. I got to the restaurant within the five minutes time frame with the staff advising that they do not have a table for me and it's a mistake... At that point, she told me it will be a twenty minutes wait but did not ask me to queue on their system or make a note that the next available table will be mine. So not knowing what the situation was, I waited inside the restaurant to ensure my table would not be given away to someone else whose in their electronic queue. Luckily, it didn't take the whole twenty minutes before a table became ready. At the table, we scanned the QR codes and order on our phones. We ordered the Japanese styled pan fried beef with rice on sizzling hot plate with black pepper sauce and the roasted meat ball with bolognese sauce with cheese and garlic on spaghetti. We shared both plates between my friend, her kid and I. The food was good, but didn't really wow me. The spaghetti was good, the meatballs were seasoned and flavourful, however, I feel the portion could be bigger. When placed beside the sizzling plate, the spaghetti looks significantly smaller. The sizzling plate was good but I wish there's more sauce. The restaurant is definitely family friendly and great for bigger parties. It would be great if they can take reservations especially for their target audience on a weekend evening as I noticed most of their patrons were families with young children and elders. This is the place for all your extravagant Instagram food pictures. Behind the gimmicks, it's just your typical Asian dessert place; similar to sugar marmalade. I got the honey toast in matcha sauce, the toast was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside with a warm matcha sauce drizzled on top. The presentation with the dry ice was everything I wanted and more. Definitely perfect for the 'gram, so I do recommend this dish. The other dessert I tried was their milk tea in "hot pot" style, this one was although fun to look at, really wasn't any different than your typical average milk tea, so I probably wouldn't get this again. read more

MABU Generation remains one of the restaurants I head to when I don't know what I want to eat. The mini hotpots are still phenomenal and filling - esp if you don't want AYCE. It is so satisfying on a cold (or hot) day. Tip: Don't add more noodles or you'll literally have 0 soup left. I'm also liking the hotplate teriyaki beef a lot more than I did before. This place has become our favourite place for hot pot. We came just after they lifted the full lockdown restriction during the pandemic, so they only operated at 25% capacity (ony 4 tables, with most tables having 2 people each). We came in the late afternoon / early dinner time, and the wait was about 30 minutes. They have a touch-screen check-in system where you input your name and phone #, and they'll text message you when your table is ready. INTERIOR The inside is very clean and has a somewhat dark interior, with a nice large mural depicting a scene in Taiwan, lighting, and decorations that give the place a 1960s / 1970s vibes of Taiwan. At the same time, it also has a modern feel from the modern music they play in the background. Nice ambience overall. ORDERING & SERVICE There is no hard copy menu (probably to minimize touch as a pandemic measure / precaution). You scan the QR code on the table using your phone, and you can see the full menu and order online (input your table # so they know which table the order is for). Very fast and convenient. Once the order is put in, they'll give you a paper receipt confirming all your orders. THE FOOD 1) Milk & Cheese-Based Seafood Hot Pot They have some unique hot pot selections that are not found in typical AYCE hot pot places, such as the Milk and Cheese-Based Hot Pot. This has become our favourite hot pot to date! The broth is rich and very flavourful. It doesn't taste like the 2% milk that you get from the supermarket (which has a somewhat sweet taste from the lactose). The milk broth tastes more umami / savoury, and not as thick as a chowder soup. We ordered the Milk & Cheese-Based Seafood Hot Pot, which comes served with a variety of seafood (large prawns / shrimps, mussels, clams, tofu, fish balls, squid balls, fish tofu, imitation crab stick, enoki mushrooms, napa cabbage, noodles, and a sliced cheese. We ordered extras of a lot of the ingredients, especially the seafood and vegetables. (You can get various extra add-ons for any hot pot.) Some of the ingredients already come somewhat cooked in the hot pot when they bring it to your table, so it's ready to eat. Another great thing about this hot pot is that it comes topped with bonito flakes! It's so satisfying to watch the bonito flakes do their 'dance' on the heat - and they add a lot of flavour to the already rich broth. 2) House Special Don: Grilled Salmon & Salmon Roe with House Special BBQ Sauce on Rice I've had many don buri in my lifetime, and I really liked this one. I don't like overly saucy ones, so this one is perfect. It comes with 2 good-sized pieces of salmon, good amount of ikura (salmon roe), broccoli, corn, and soft runny egg (came as a surprise) on rice. Everything blends really well together in the bowl. The BBQ sauce infuses nicely in the rice without being too sweet or saucy. Very satisfying and wholesome bowl. I'd order this again in a heartbeat. 3) Taiwanese Style Vegetable This 'appetizer' / small dish is made up of broccoli covered with Taiwanese style brown sauce that tastes pretty good and non-spicy. It's a great side dish to any meal. The broccoli is still somewhat crisp and not overcooked. WASHROOM I don't normally do reviews of restaurants' washrooms, but I thought this one deserves a mention. Their toilets have heated toilet seats, like the ones you find in Taiwan and Japan (with the extra 'buttons' for different functions). The seats are also covered with plastic that are disposed of after each use, and are replaced with the touch of a button. COVID-19 MEASURES Other than the limited seating capacity in accordance to municipal public health guidelines, they screen everyone's temperature upon entry. Tables are physically distanced and have hard plastic dividers between them. All cutlery (bowls, plates, spoons, forks, chopsticks, cups for drinking) are all disposable ones (made of plastic or styrofoam). read more

When I first visited the restaurant like over 2-3 years ago. I was amazed by the sizzling plates and good portions. However after visiting yesterday, their extensive menu definitely decreased and the portions are a lot smaller. For example, for the okonomiyaki fries, it's usually a huge long plate with lots of fried and sauce. However, this time around it was a small little plate with little bit of fries and they charge $10 for it. Definitely not worth It and will not be ordering that anymore despite it being decent. The sizzling plate beef on rice, usually the staff mixes the meat before it's given to the customer. However, the waiter just dropped it down to table and left. I ended up trying to mix it making sure that the meat is fully cooked however, it definitely wasn't due to the fact that the plate was not sizzling by the time he dropped it down to my table. It's still good but I'm paying an extra $2 for cheese I expect to have a lot of cheese drizzled on top of the rice/ plate- nope- this didn't happen. Just a like sprinkle which looked like a few pieces of cheese. Despite all of this and my understanding that it's COVID and it's rough for businesses. The wait time for the food was unacceptable. The four of us, both me and my parents got the food. However, my brother had to wait like 20mins to get his sizzling plate. Btw- we all finished our food already by the time he received his. I came to MABU Generation looking for a small quick late-night bite. Boy, was it a great experience. After hearing about this place from a friend, I decided to see all the hooplah and excitement was all about. My friend and I were seated immediately on Friday evening and we were looking for some small bites. We ordered their famous Popcorn Chicken and Takoyaki. The Popcorn Chicken was prepared to a nice crisp, with the heat absorbing the seasoning for the chicken. The sauce (I think it was Thousand Island Dressing) was a nice tangy compliment to the savoury chicken. The Takoyaki was nice and fluffy with a decent amount of octopus in every bite. The sauce and bonito flakes helps accelerate the umami for this dish. I wish me and my friend came a lot earlier with bigger appetites as were dying to try their hot pot. There is a wide selection of hot pots to choose from and from what I've heard, you can't go wrong with any of them. I usually like coming here, because the individual hot pots are a very good deal. They only cost 22 dollars for alot of toppings, and will definitely satisfy any spicy cravings. Aside from this though, the snacks are quite expensive and the drinks are bland. Also the staff seem very busy and uncoordinated. On this occasion, I had ordered the spicy hot pot, but it took them 25 minutes and only after I reminded them, did they take it out. Service was spot on, the waitress was courteous, attentive, responsive. I love how they kept our table clean x organized while we eat. My BFF and I came here on a weekend afternoon between 2:30pm - 4:30pm... not too many people, so it was nice and quiet to chat :) We tried the H06 Japanese Style Miso Soup mini hot pot and we were stuffed! It had a good amount of ingredients, with vermicelli on the side. We also shared the Popcorn Chicken (a Taiwanese staple, must order!) and the Taiwanese Oyster Pancake... not exactly the ones made with all eggs. It had a gooey, gelatinous, chewy texture, and the oysters were surprisingly huge; I quite enjoyed this dish :) Try it if you feel adventurous lol. ---------- I came back again, and this time with my coworkers on a Thursday evening, just before 6:00pm. The chairs could be a bit comfier, but overall a good ambience. But man this place does get busy. Decided to get a salty snack and a sweet snack to share. The kimchi fries are a must, so crispy and delicious kimchi on top! So good! I wanted a shave ice too but instead of strawberry toppings I wanted to try durian and they happily made the accommodation. The base of the shave ice was strawberry and then they had fresh durian pudding as a topping. It was quite delicious...the strawberry ice mixed with durian was a really unique flavour but tasted quite good. Despite a lot of competition for similiar food in the First Markham Plaza, Mabu does a good job of bringing in customers due to the quality of food and amount of space in the restaurant. I did order take-out recently and unfortunately the food got cold pretty fast so I would recommend dining in if possible - otherwise the quality of the food drops drastically. My friend and I were excited to try this restaurant. We've seen all these great photos online. I had called prior to arriving to gauge how long we would have to wait. It was a busy Boxing Day night but didn't have to wait too long for a table. Unfortunately we were seated by the door and could feel the coldness from outside whenever someone opened the door. The couple we sat next to for the evening didn't seem to be enjoying themselves and all we could hear was them bickering. This doesn't make for a good night out. We "lucked out" and got the last seat available...the staff warned us it would be cold if we did not want to wait (we were hungry so we braved it)-he was thoughtful enough to point a heater at us so the cold was not as bad. We could barely hear her as the place was super noisy. She looked angry and grumpy. She was the only waitress working at that time. The food is overrated. The rice bowl has a lot of sauce and it's extremely salty, almost to the point that couldn't be eaten. The lunch special comes with a tea and dessert. They have a qr code sticker on their tables where you can scan with your phone and order within that app although it doesn't work very well with android phones. The waiter had to rewrite the order on paper. For this time, I ordered the "Japanese Style Black Pepper Terriyaki sauce with slice beef with rice on a hot plate". I also ordered a mango milk shake with mango popping bubbles. Order came quickly and I really thought the food was average. Sure it was good, but not amazing. Something was missing with the flavour that I can't describe. The mango milk shake was mostly milk with hardly any mango flavour so that was a little disappointing. I might return here? Not the greatest experience. - alot of items on the menu weren't available - the servers were terribly rude - weve asked for our change back and they didnt bother to return the change anyways despite walking by our table many times - we put in an order for the garlic bread and it was never made - we just sat awkwardly at the table waiting for nothing really, no updates or no servers checked in on us but i had to ask if it was still coming - the food and dessert was decent. Finally tried Mabu and everything was legit! The space is nicely decorated - dark woods/Taiwan inspired artwork w a trendy vibe. A few friends recommended the Mochi Waffle and it did not disappoint. I had the red bean matcha waffle - the Mochi inside the waffle is really nice and chewy. Didn't care much about the pudding on top. Hot pot - enjoyed the Japanese one. Fruit tea - comes in a tea pot, really good! Good for sharing. Avocado beef pizza - not bad, smaller than the picture Grass jelly - least fav... It comes in a black liquid which solidifies into jelly quite quickly. The taro balls aren't as good as other places ,but this dish comes w barley and chunks of mashed potato and taro. Free milk pudding or drink ($4.99) with social media post. Really like milk pudding! 10% off if pay by cash. Menu is very extensive .. from traditional Taiwanese dishes (popcorn chicken etc), to dessert & drinks, to hot pot and fusion dishes. I was recommended this place by some Toronto natives so I decided to check it out while I was in town. The menu had a huge selection of drinks, food and dessert. I came here to satisfy a late night sweet tooth, but wish I had room for more. I was told they're known for their hot pot but all I had room for was dessert this night. I chose the mixed fruit mochi dessert waffle and was told that waffle batter has mochi (flour?) mixed in to it in order to get the chewy texture. The waffle was soft and chewy and the fruit and had a mix between sweet and sour to compliment the ice cream and chocolate and vanilla drizzle. I loved the texture and it was a nice change of pace, compared to your normal soft/crunchy breakfast waffles. The service here was okay, but it was a pretty busy night. If you don't split the bill and pay cash, you get a 10% discount, which is probably nice for non/large groups or if you happen to have cash. If I'm ever back in town, I definitely will come back to try the vast variety of food options on their menu! read more

Service is abysmal, food is bland and just edible, not worth the prices charged. Even the teas offered are just okay without much flavour.

Ordered a bunch of snacks, their pop corn chicken was amazing. The pop corn chicken came in a huge portion, highly recommended it to be shared amongst a few people: Their fresh juice came in a decent size compared to brunch restaurants which usually charges around the same price but for a really small glass. read more
