You get a choice of protein and get to pick three sides from a large selection of sides per bento box. No matter which area I live in, I always come back to this place for popcorn chicken, other places just don't make the cut. Ah, Taiwan, where I was born and raised. Because of the nature of unrealistic working ethics and hypercapitalism, nuclear families with stayed home moms are actually not as prevalent as many have thought for most of the middle-working class families. This includes my own childhood. My parents were both extremely busy at their full time jobs when I was a kid, so I didn't have many chances of tasting my mom's cooking, besides some weekends. Our regular meals consisted of 自助式便當 (mix and match beto boxes) since it saves time, while also provides healthy, balanced meals in general. This place would have been a solid 3.5, however, I am forced to give it a 1 due to food safety concerns. Major concern is the popcorn chicken was not fully cooked - had a deep pink - red colour. Generally, I'm not squeamish about some pink in my chicken, I'll shrug it off and keep eating. In this case, when I got 2/3 of the way done my meal, I noticed this one piece tasted not quite done and, unfortunately, when I looked, it indeed had a nice deep pink - red colour. I was quite sad since everything up to that made this great. The service is fairly quick and to the point. The ladies speak English, Cantonese and mandarin. The bento box is pick 1 meat then cafeteria style pick 3 veges. If you don't know what things are, point and ask. Comes with a massive amount of rice, generous amount of meat and then three rectangles of vege side dishes of your choosing. All 3 vege dishes were quite good albeit a little on the oily side. We got two different fried tofus and one eggplant sides. The popcorn chicken (right before the raw piece) was actually quite good, not served super hot but had a nice thin batter, crispy and meaty. Price is very affordable as it's only 9$ for the whole thing which is rare in GTA for a meal. Alas, it was not to end so well as mid-way through the meal, there was an undone piece of popcorn chicken and the meal ended briefly after. I wish I could give it a better rating but there are only a few things that make me give a place a 1 Star and food safety is one of those things. I'd recommend getting meats that are braised. Tai Ping Hsiang has been booming recently for their take on classic Taiwanese cuisine with their take-out options. I went there recently for a lunch break and I was impressed with the variety of choices for their bento box specials. From a price range of $7 to $10, you can have a choice of meat (i.e. Popcorn Chicken, Chicken Leg, Pork Belly) along with 3 vegetarian side dishes. Their popcorn chicken is out of this world as it is perfectly fried and coated gently with seasoning for all ultra crisp and juicy bite. For the side dishes, they have a lot of classics to choose from (i.e. Tomato and Egg, Broccoli, Preserved Pickles) to mix and match textures with rice. If you're looking for an economical lunch combo, this is the go-to place! But, be prepared to wait in line as Tai Ping Hsiang does have its loyal customer base! In the heart of little Taiwan known as Metro Square, we have Tai Ping Hsiang. This takeout joint if not a day-oner at Metro Square then a very close to one. My family and I had been enjoying takeout from here for more than a decade. If you are looking for an economical Taiwanese experience there is no better place in the GTA. For a price of $8-10, you will get a choice of meat and three side dishes. You can't got wrong with most of the meat options here. Salt and pepper pop corn chicken, smoked duck, deep fried fish, three cup chicken. The only one I don't prefer personally is the lions head (it's not the type where the soup and sauce gets all soaked into the meatball). Almost all the side dishes are enjoyable here. My favorite are the glazed taro, the stir fried green beans and pretty much all the soy based options. Their combo used to come with pop or soup but they cut that out... can't blame them because of inflation. If you are vegetarian you can also order the same bento at the same price and they will gladly replace the meat with three side dishes. I'm not sure if that's an off menu thing since I don't see it on their menu anymore. If you like a good deal... And you also like good meal.... And if you are craving for Taiwanese grub... For less than $10, you can get a bento box filled with your choice of protein and 3 veggie sides. I ordered the popcorn chicken which was surprisingly light and not too greasy. It was crispy, juicy and well-seasoned! For the sides, I tried the eggplant, tofu, and wood ear mushrooms which were a great contrast in texture. Maybe 4-5 in front of me but one guy in the front ordered 10 bento boxes to go and he pretty much wiped out all the side dishes, at least the one I wanted. I guess it's night time so they weren't refilling and ur left with whatever's remaining. Didn't bother me too much since they have a wide selection of side dishes. We ordered two bento, one popcorn chicken (most people ordered this one), and one chicken cutlet. All Bento are same price $8 after tax. We took our bento to the nearby metro square food court and ate there. For the popcorn chicken, I felt that the seasoning and texture was good but it's not hot and crispy enough. Maybe there were many orders so they made a lot in advance. As for the chicken cutlet it was hot and crispy and tasted good. Each bento comes with choice of three side dishes and u can pick the same one as well. They were a bit on the greasy side but not salty which is good to complement the chicken. Overall reasonable cheap quick eats. If I'm craving for popcorn chicken tho, I think I'll wanna go zenQ or presotea/chef papa. They make hot and fresh popcorn chicken, every time. read more

Tai Ping Hsiang serves up some pretty authentic Taiwanese food and if you're looking for something simple then you're at the right place. It can be a bit difficult to find but the shop is located at the back side of the Steeles storefront. There's no tables or chairs there so either you can take it to the food court (which is in the same plaza) or take it back home. Seems like the prices have gone up a little bit (then again which restaurant hasn't?). I got the popcorn chicken bento for $9 tax in, out the door. You choose your choice of main and choose three sides to go with it. While it didn't seem like a lot of food, the quanitity was a lot more than it appeared to be. You can definitely be full from one of these and they give you quite a bit of popcorn chicken (but less so of the sides). The value is still really good here. The popcorn chicken was amazing! Crisp and definitely taste of nice five spice: sweet, fragrant, and cinnamony. All if the sides were very tasty and authentic. We ended up trying the cabbage, garlic hearts, and eggplant. All very sweet and savory. I definitely would recommend the spicy sauce they pour over the rice which isn't spicy at all but adds lot of flavor and kick instead. The majority of employees speak Mandarin here, but if you order in Cantonese they still understand. There is a big chart of protein you can choose. I haven't tried anything besides the popcorn chicken because it's just so yummy! They freshly fry it, with a good amount of seasoning and crispy exterior. There is a fair amount of chicken per order. Then you get to 3 sides. There are so many to choose from. I'm biased because I love eggplant, so I always get that one. As another yelper mentioned, the fried sweet taro is really good! I have tried their green beans, their lotus roots, their on choy, and tofu. All are very good! And you also get a bowl of soup, or upgrade to a can of pop for 6.65 plus taxes. The only downside is that there is only 2 small tables to eat in. During lunch, I would head over to the food court, but even then it's sometimes hard to find a free table to sit at. Good Simple and Cheap Not really much to say about this place that hasn't already been covered the food is good the portions are good as well, the place is simple 2 tables for dine in so most of the traffic is take out and the pricing is amazing. Get the popcorn chicken, pick 3 side dishes grab a drink and you're out of the door spending less than $10 on a meal that could've costed you more. I was more than satisfied by the end of the meal and it didn't leave me feeling like I should've ate something healthier. Just grabbed lunch takeout from here as there is no sit down area; however there is a food court in the area that has plenty of seating literally a few steps away. The staff working there is super friendly and the food is prepped really quick. I order the box set which comes with one main, 3 sides and rice. My box set consist of -Taiwanese Fried Chicken Nuggets (Main) -Braised Eggplant (Side) -Braised Tofu Skin (Side) -Stir Fry Green Beans (Side) -Braised Egg (Another side but this item cost extra, but I would recommend ordering it as I find it completes the meal) All of this food came up to just under $10 which I think is a fantastic value for those looking for a quick lunch or takeout option. There is also a CoCo Bubble Tea nearby and it pairs up nicely with this kind of food. I've been working in this plaza for almost 5 years and yesterday was my first time heading into this place. My coworkers often get the combos for lunch so I finally decided to check this place out myself. The place is small, with very limited seating but seems like most people do takeout anyway. I ordered a side order of popcorn chicken to go. Surprisingly for 5.55 (6.25 after tax) there was a large amount of popcorn chicken, which almost seemed endless when I was eating and sharing with a few friends. I spent 13 years Taiwan and this is by far the best location in Toronto that I've found for Taiwanese food so far. How tasty the side dishes vary dependent on what you choose, but the fried chicken / pork as the main are juicy in the inside and crispy on the outside, and not greasy. Efficient service. Not your ideal place if you're looking for a nice sit down restaurant, but for descent Taiwanese take-out food, this place is your gig. You get high value for the price you pay. Approx $7 for a bien dang （便當）that includes soup, rice, one main meat, and three side dishes. The meat portions are quit abundant for how much you're paying. The side dishes vary by dish. Food is colourful, flavourful, and nice variety. Taiwan is a food haven for many Asian countries and this restaurant, although the location is not visually appealing, is a must go and the closest resemblance of Taiwanese food I've come across. (Although if I were to grade it in Taiwan it is a 75%), but here in Canada I'll take it! Bottom line, this is a must go. Get your bang for your buck. read more

My family has been getting Taiwanese lunch/dinner boxes from here for the past 10 years or so. We don't frequent it often because we have a wonderful cook at home but when she is on her day off, we come here. This is really a take out space. They only have three tables there and it's usually busy around dinner time with a long line in a crammed place so it's not very pleasant to have sit down dinner there anyways. We always get their fried pork cutlet (pai goo fan). Fried pork cutlet is very tender, flavourful and they cook it made-to-order style. Also tried their three cup chicken which comes out of the freezer and into the microwave, then into my box. Doesn't taste anywhere close to the real deal. For the side dishes, you have three choices. They have various stir fried dishes including green beans, eggplant, cabbage, brocoll, some tofu dishes including ma-po dofu, and some chunky pork with fat trimmings. Then they top your rice with minced pork and jus - either spicy or non spicy. Prices are reasonable - usually 6-8 bucks pre tax and includes either turnip soup or can of pop. read more
