When I think of taiwanese popcorn chicken, this is my go to place! This is a grab and go take out place and food is always fresh! You get a choice of protein and get to pick three sides from a large selection of sides per bento box. No matter which area I live in, I always come back to this place for popcorn chicken, other places just don't make the cut. It's either cold, too greasy, too much batter, or gets soggy and nasty at other places. If you want to satisfy your popcorn chicken cravings, you must check this place out! They also serve other food, but popcorn chicken is always my go to!

Just an update: Came by during the pandemic time. The line-ups were long, but everyone was orderly. We decided to grab some lunch as we didn't want to cook. We ordered a Taiwanese sausage bento and a popcorn chicken bento with all the fixings. Their food reminded us of all the years of coming by here to grab their food. The food still tastes great. To me, the best part is the side dishes. Those are absolutely awesome! We found out we can order ahead. So we will do that going forward.

Ah, Taiwan, where I was born and raised. Because of the nature of unrealistic working ethics and hypercapitalism, nuclear families with stayed home moms are actually not as prevalent as many have thought for most of the middle-working class families. This includes my own childhood. My parents were both extremely busy at their full time jobs when I was a kid, so I didn't have many chances of tasting my mom's cooking, besides some weekends. Our regular meals consisted of 自助式便當 (mix and match beto boxes) since it saves time, while also provides healthy, balanced meals in general. Hualien Tai Ping Hsiang is probably one of the most authentic Taiwanese bento restaurants I have ever had in Canada, in the good-old mix-and-match style above. Their side dishes are incredibly delicious if you got them fresh; they also have other authentic food such as Taiwanese style sesame cold noodle (涼麵)

Best Taiwanese bento! We drive here from Ajax because they are THAT GOOD!!! Please note the updated menu pic. Great portions and always more than 6 sides to choose from. Watch out for long lines during lunchtime & allow extra time for anything fried : they cook by order so it's always fresh & hot. They are closed on Sunday & holidays. Family run - fast & friendly staff.

This place would have been a solid 3.5, however, I am forced to give it a 1 due to food safety concerns. Major concern is the popcorn chicken was not fully cooked - had a deep pink - red colour. Generally, I'm not squeamish about some pink in my chicken, I'll shrug it off and keep eating. In this case, when I got 2/3 of the way done my meal, I noticed this one piece tasted not quite done and, unfortunately, when I looked, it indeed had a nice deep pink - red colour. I was quite sad since everything up to that made this great. The service is fairly quick and to the point. The ladies speak English, Cantonese and mandarin. The bento box is pick 1 meat then cafeteria style pick 3 veges. If you don't know what things are, point and ask. Comes with a massive amount of rice, generous amount of meat and then three rectangles of vege side dishes of your choosing. All 3 vege dishes were quite good albeit a little on the oily side. We got two different fried tofus and one eggplant sides. The popcorn chicken (right before the raw piece) was actually quite good, not served super hot but had a nice thin batter, crispy and meaty. Price is very affordable as it's only 9$ for the whole thing which is rare in GTA for a meal. Alas, it was not to end so well as mid-way through the meal, there was an undone piece of popcorn chicken and the meal ended briefly after. I wish I could give it a better rating but there are only a few things that make me give a place a 1 Star and food safety is one of those things. I'd recommend getting meats that are braised. If you do get the popcorn chicken, be wary of the larger pieces as they may not be cooked through!

Came and ordered for a company lunch, everyone enjoyed all the different varieties of combinations that tai Ping Hsiang offers. The service is as great as always. It's a order and go type of place. Small, efficient, friendly and tasty

Yummy popcorn chicken dish! Lots of different side dishes to choose from and lineup always for this place but moves face. They pack on the food in takeout container and if you don't want rice you can get another side, normally there is 3 sides. I thoroughly enjoy my meal here!

Many choices of bento. Just like what I had in Taiwan. You pick a meat dish and other three veggi dish. I chose the fried chicken. My friend had a popcorn chicken. The chicken was well marinated. I forgot to take photos before I devoured. They were lovely. The price was good. I would like to come back and try all other dishes.

Heard that Tai Ping Hsiang makes amazing Taiwanese popcorn chicken, so I decided to make a stop by here. For less than $10, you can get a bento box filled with your choice of protein and 3 veggie sides. I ordered the popcorn chicken which was surprisingly light and not too greasy. It was crispy, juicy and well-seasoned! For the sides, I tried the eggplant, tofu, and wood ear mushrooms which were a great contrast in texture. The bento tasted delicious, and the portions were definitely worth the price. It was a satisfying lunch, that's for sure! I'd recommend trying this place out if you're nearby and craving some delicious fried chicken.

This BBQ takeout place is located in the Metro Square plaza with the entrance from the outside only. It's a very busy parking lot so watch out for lots of people walking plus drivers looking for parking. The queue for ordering moves along quickly. I chose a salt & pepper crispy chicken leg served with steamed rice & 3 veggie sides $8.15. Delicious!

Great spot for popcorn chicken as a snack. Small little takeout place in metro square.

$8 each Popcorn chicken bento with all tofu And chicken cutlet in the front

Friday rainy night at around 630 - There was a line up for takeout bento. Maybe 4-5 in front of me but one guy in the front ordered 10 bento boxes to go and he pretty much wiped out all the side dishes, at least the one I wanted. I guess it's night time so they weren't refilling and ur left with whatever's remaining. Didn't bother me too much since they have a wide selection of side dishes. We ordered two bento, one popcorn chicken (most people ordered this one), and one chicken cutlet. All Bento are same price $8 after tax. We took our bento to the nearby metro square food court and ate there. For the popcorn chicken, I felt that the seasoning and texture was good but it's not hot and crispy enough. Maybe there were many orders so they made a lot in advance. As for the chicken cutlet it was hot and crispy and tasted good. Each bento comes with choice of three side dishes and u can pick the same one as well. They were a bit on the greasy side but not salty which is good to complement the chicken. Overall reasonable cheap quick eats. If I'm craving for popcorn chicken tho, I think I'll wanna go zenQ or presotea/chef papa. They make hot and fresh popcorn chicken, every time.

Tai Ping Hsiang serves up some pretty authentic Taiwanese food and if you're looking for something simple then you're at the right place. It can be a bit difficult to find but the shop is located at the back side of the Steeles storefront. There's no tables or chairs there so either you can take it to the food court (which is in the same plaza) or take it back home. Seems like the prices have gone up a little bit (then again which restaurant hasn't?). I got the popcorn chicken bento for $9 tax in, out the door. You choose your choice of main and choose three sides to go with it. While it didn't seem like a lot of food, the quanitity was a lot more than it appeared to be. You can definitely be full from one of these and they give you quite a bit of popcorn chicken (but less so of the sides). The value is still really good here. The popcorn chicken was amazing! Crisp and definitely taste of nice five spice: sweet, fragrant, and cinnamony. All if the sides were very tasty and authentic. We ended up trying the cabbage, garlic hearts, and eggplant. All very sweet and savory. I definitely would recommend the spicy sauce they pour over the rice which isn't spicy at all but adds lot of flavor and kick instead. There was a lot of sides to choose from and we'll definitely be back to try the rest of the menu!

She's usually deep within the store making food so you'll have to wait to catch her attention. There is a large menu outside along with 3 breakfast combos near the cash register. I missed those because I wasn't looking up. Service: 3.75/5 - we were the first one to order. More people came after us. She told us 10 minutes so we walked around while we waited. When we got back, there were more waiting but she gave an order to someone that ordered well after us. After we spoke with her, she realized she forgot our order. It took another 10-15 minutes to make. Food: 4.5/5 - we ordered the traditional rice roll ($8) with soy milk ($3). On first glance, it looked small. It has some weight to it and it felt very hot. When you bite into it, it's warm. There is a very crispy fried dough fritter in the middle. It also came with preserved/picked vegetables and a Tawianese sausage. Definitely don't unroll the cling film wrap all the way or it'll be an even messier eat. I liked that there was a lot of filling and the rice around it was a thin layer. It is small but mighty! I'm surprisingly full from it. The soy milk is fine, it tastes unsweetened. Overall: 4/5 - I don't mind coming back and trying the other options (more varieties of rice rolls, appetizers, desserts, baos). I just hope she doesn't forget our order next time.

Apparently this is a very famous restaurant in Taiwan so it's great that we can try it here in Toronto! My Taiwanese friend did the ordering as she was familiar with the popular dishes to try. She ordered two lunch specials. One lunch set was a little pricier for about $25 but if you pay cash there is 10% off on this item. This lunch set was really worth it as this combo included 6 side dishes, a main dish with a soup or milk tea...and for the main dish, you could choose Danmi noodles or Minced pork rice and we picked the noodles since we got the Pork Hock & Minced pork rice for our 2nd lunch set. The two of us shared all the items except my friend insisted that I have the marinated abalone side dish and this was so good! I will definitely be coming back because of this dish! I also liked the Danmi noodles and Pork Hock. Although the food was amazing but the service was lacking. It wasn't busy when we got there just before noon on a Wednesday and we had to wave the staff for help several times and the staff didn't even take our order correctly as we had asked for two tea and they only brought one. I will still be back as the food was really good and I love Taiwanese food!

Its name is Xin Yi Snack. I find their restaurant name rather odd considering Taiwanese people would rarely use pinyin for their English name or simplified Chinese in their Chinese name. It's takeout only and you can tell that they are somewhat emulating the Tai Ping Hsiang business model. However, food wise, it's of lesser quality then the aforementioned. Value wise, it's there. For $10 or so, you get a choice of meat; I chose the Taiwanese braised pork. And you also get a choice of two sides; I opted for fried egg plants and potatoes. The value is there, but the quality is just..ok. In these times of inflation, you can't really complain about the portion or the price. But, I've had better Taiwanese bentos. The braised pork had soy flavour and definitely star anise, but it's lacking a bit in other spices. A slightly thicker sauce and the use of dark soy would definitely help with the compatibility with the rice and presentation. Same issues apply to the egg that came with the meal. The sides were ok. But I think they could have marinated the eggplants more to minimize that weird tingly feeling that you get from eating 'under treated' eggplants. I also thought the potato could use a bit more sugar and/or salt. Rice was on the slightly hard side. If you are hungry and seeking value, Xin Yi Time can be an option for you. But, just don't be too picky.
