Nestled on one of Cleveland's gems, East 4th Street, Mabel's BBQ serves up some surprisingly excellent barbecue. With its modern, chic decor, I honestly wasn't expecting the kind of smoky flavor that usually comes from a spot that looks a little more rough around the edges. It felt almost too dressed up to deliver true barbecue. But I was pleasantly surprised. The bar is impressive, offering a wide selection of drinks with attentive bartenders. I started with a Brown Hoist Cider Co. "Adjournment," a fruity cranberry cider that was crisp and pleasing to the palate. For the grub, I ordered the Polish Girl...pulled pork topped with kielbasa and slaw, finished with their sweet smoky sauce. It was a delicious combination and absolutely worth returning for. To accompany this, I added the loaded fried potatoes with brisket. The brisket was the real star of the plate...perfectly smoky and teeeennnder. (mmm...) After laying down a solid base, I wrapped up the visit with the Bottled in Bond bourbon flight, featuring Evan Williams Bottled in Bond, Henry McKenna 10-Year Bourbon, and Rittenhouse Bonded Rye Whiskey. If you're craving for some BBQ in the middle of the city, this would be a decent spot to go to. Love the staff and ambiance in the restaurant. I chose Mr Beef sandwich cause I love my brisket. Unfortunately it came out dry even after adding lots of sauce to make up for it. Sauces were delicious for sure! The rest of my table ordered smash burger and with bake beans as their sides. Solid bbq spot in the heart of downtown Cleveland 4th street. We grabbed Mabel's before we headed over to the Cavs game and it wasn't too crowded. Inside seating has 2-floors and bench seating, so you could be seated next to strangers. Bathrooms are 2-single gender neutral stalls. Yum! Tasty BBQ. With a both a concert and a baseball game that night, the wait wasn't too bad. We had a family style tray between 4 of us- classic kielbasa, lean brisket, ribs, baked beans, coleslaw, and fried potatoes. I had the only salad on the menu- fresh and crisp and a good counterpart to the meat picnic. The croutons are very salty. Loved the shredded cheddar on it and that creamy herb dressing is sooooo good. I do think the meat portions could've been a little bigger. The kraut and pickles on each tray is a nice touch, and the rye bread is fantastic. Biggest criticism is some of the meats, ribs in particular, had a tinge of that lighter fluid taste. My husband and I were just wandering around after we had dinner and decided to stop in to Mabel's to check out their very large whiskey collection. We sat at the bar and browse the menu and decided to get a Manhattan and my husband decided to get a poor of whiskey on the rocks and I forgot what whiskey he chose but it was good . The bartender was very nice and very attentive so we appreciated that and we decided at the last minute to try the banana pudding and it was delicious. It actually went well with our whiskey so we were pleasantly surprised. I've been wanting to try Mabel's out for AGES... YEARS even! But most of my friends are vegetarian so I had to wait to try out. Was it worth the wait? Yes, but with one hesitation.... the price! The interior is gorgeous and the staff is very friendly but the food is not worth the price. My main critiques are that they are a bit stingy with the portions and while the fatty brisket was amazing, the kielbasa was nothing to write home about and certainly not worth $15! Will I come back? I've never been to a bbq place that is table service before, usually you order at the counter and find your own seat. Server was slow and not that friendly, she was nicer to other tables around us. Ended up going for sandwiches, my husband said his smashburger was good. I did the Polish Girl which was a spicy kielbasa with pulled pork and slaw in a hotdog bun - it was actually pretty good, needed more slaw. For the price of the sandwich they should come with a side. Super cool to have learned this is one of Michael Symon's restaurants! Upon entering, you even see a signed baking sheet that DDD has been here. We came here shortly after they opened and a few people were already there. We decided to enjoy their outdoor patio, so I didn't get to see much of the inside, but from what I can tell, it was huge! We were seated right away and we perused through the menu. It took a minute for our server to approach us. Although she was attentive for the rest of our time there. I ordered myself an Arnold Palmer (because you gotta when you're eating BBQ). The server explained to us that everything is pretty much a la carte and her faves from the menu. My husband eventually ordered the pulled pork with side of hot greens and pierogis, and I ordered the lean brisket with fried potatoes. Our food came pretty quick and wow, shocked by how much food we got. The menu has a touch of Eastern European inspiration and was delighted to see a slice of rye bread instead of traditional rolls or corn bread (I come from the South, lol). The pickles and cabbage pickings were so good and complemented every bite. The lean brisket was tasty but found a bit too dry, so I doused everything in their BBQ sauce - I preferred the tangy one better, while my husband liked the sweeter sauce. The fried potatoes were fried in beef tallow and were just so good and hearty. My favorite though were the pierogis, with the caramelized onion on top. My husband thought the hot greens were okay, but he did enjoy the pulled pork. I think this place is a good restaurant if you enjoy BBQ. Why take a trip to Cleveland? Because I've never been! As a bourbon enthusiast, I was surprised to see such a great selection of bottles in all the bars and restaurants around the city. Mabel's whiskey selection is not just impressive for the city, but perhaps in all of Ohio. I wish I wasn't visiting during dry January, I would have spent much more time there exploring their menu of bottles. Luckily the food is also good. It's an a-la-carte menu so I ordered a plate featuring a half pound of brisket (FYI a half pound is the minimum order quantity, more than enough for a single person.) The brisket was a fatty cut and besides the moisture, it also had the smoke on the nose and palate that is almost reminiscent of Texas but enough to make it stand out from other joints I've tried across the country. The menu leans towards European style so the plates came with sour kraut, pickles, and rye bread. My side of brussels was also topped with a rustic mustard complete with seeds. Good food, and great drink selection, all in a modern, clean, open space. Next time I'm in town I'm returning, and hopefully it won't be during dry January. read more

The food was delicious! We tried the ribs, brisket, pulled pork, pierogis, and loaded fried potatoes. The ribs and the fried potatoes were by far my favorite! Seating is limited. We had a party of 6, 4 adults and 2 children under 5. They sat us at the big table in the middle of the room. We sat right next to other people at the same big table. Which is fine, but it was hard to figure out how to adjust the kids to be with the parents. When I asked if I could use a chair beside me, I was told no that it would be for another reservation. Sitting us at the end of the table would have resolved this issue, since no one was sitting there when we were seated. Not really a place for kids unless they really like bbq. No kid menu. Also there are only 2 bathrooms which are unisex. So this usually means you'd be in line on a busy night. But over all, the food was absolutely delicious. read more

Every article I read about Cleveland's food scene mentioned going to Mabel's, and then an Uber driver also mentioned it. So, off to lunch we went. They serve very good barbecue. Maybe not on par with the best southern BBQ, but very good. I started with the Brisket-filled Pierogi. Since I was having the ribs as my entree, I thought this a good way to sample the Brisket. The meat was very tender and flavorful, and the Pierogi dough was very good, but could have used more of a crisping. The Spare Ribs (half rack) were perfectly cooked, coming off the bone cleanly without falling off (hopefully, everyone knows that falling off the bone is a sign of overcooking, not quality). The rub was a good balance to the pork flavor without overpowering it, and there was a sweet but subtle glaze. The two sauces on the table were very good, but not needed. The pickles were incredibly good, and the sauerkraut was a good but strange accompaniment. Service was great. We didn't have drinks but there was a nice choice of cocktails and beers. Having lived for many years in Texas and now in South Carolina I was hesitant to eat at Mabel's,. That's even with that Food Network dude being associated with the place. I shouldn't have worried. This is very good barbecue. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. I had the Big Pig Sandwich while my wife had a plate with the Fatty Brisket. Both were very good but the brisket stole the show. Let me start by saying "fatty" is THE ONLY way to have barbecue brisket. Otherwise this cut of meat becomes dry, tough and flavorless. Not the brisket we had - this was delicious. So moist, it melted in your mouth. Enough to make any Texan happy. I'm not a bourbon fanatic but, my gosh, the whiskey menu here is incredible. And I've now become a fan of Tony Packo's pickles. We'll be ordering some Sweet Hots for home in the very near future. Service was good, he explained the menu well, and the food arrived quickly.
