Supposedly meatloaf with Mac and yams.
Anthony D.

What happened to this place. I use to love it. Where is Ma N Pop? The disrespect in the portions. Ordered 2 meals. Fish and grits with eggs. The fish were the size of goldfish fillets. And the second meal was supposed to be meatloaf. I'll let you judge it from the photo. That's exact they sent me.

I recently had someone who ordered Ma N Pop for a work lunch and the food was good. So when we stumbled upon it after venturing for food in the Stuy, I thought why not. Small homely feel inside. Def old school vibes which is nice. We were the only people inside and we sat by the window in front of the solo AC in the place. It was hot outside! Service was... not good. The girl there looked like she was ready to go home and was not pleasant at all. That definitely made the experience a not so good one. On top of that it was around 5:15 and things were running out . I settled for the fried chicken dinner. It came with 2 sides. I wasn't mashed potatoes but they were out. I got Mac salad and Mac and cheese. They were out of lemonade so I settled for Sweet tea. It was ok. The food was ok. Not bad but not amazing. Would I need to be back, no. The waitress ended up walking out of the place before the bill was even paid. I ended up having to yell to the back and ask someone to come out in order for us to pay. Luckily we are honest people. All in all, it will not be a return for me.

The food wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. I was a bit disappointed to be honest. I definitely will not order again. The turkey wings were dry and could use a bit more seasoning, the salmon croquettes were salty and the collard greens were bland. I did love the decor. The restaurant is super cute and homely. If the food was better I would definitely recommend Ma-n-Pop for a cute lunch date.

The presentation was disgusting and the flavor was not good at all. $47.00 down the drain!

The ambiance is nostalgic. It reminds me small of an old school diner. I got the Breakfast special with coffee, home fries. eggs and bacon. The coffee was cold. They didn't cook my eggs the way I asked. The rest of the food was ok. I do feel like it was good for the price. I wish the meal would have came with toast. I would give them another chance.

Stopped by here to grab some takeout for dinner. Ma n pop's is a cozy little restaurant with retro red/white checkered color scheme and black history and music memorabilia. The vibe is warm and there was old school r&b music playing which was comforting. I ordered the catfish dinner, with rice and peas, and green beans and it came w cornbread. The catfish was super crispy and flavorful, even after being transported home. The rice and peas were fluffy and mildly seasoned, and the green beans were lightly spicy (like they were boiled w/ chili) but not that flavorful. The cornbread was great - crumbly, moist, lightly sweet. Truly the best, i wish id ordered more. Next time i go, id like to try the mac n cheese or collar greens. 3.5/5

Amazing place! I feel like I eat here once a week lol. I've had the fried chicken, catfish, baked chicken, and whiting fish. Everything I've had from here is delicioussss. My fav sides are the fries and Mac salad :)

Today I tried the fried chicken as well. It was crispy and juicy without being too greasy, and had a slight sweetness to the breading that was delicious. I would definitely recommend giving it a try!

I ordered for the whole staff, very disappointed. My cat fish was sour, greens from the can was salty, and the Mac & cheese if that's what they call it was horrible. Never again. Shrimps weren't fresh, rubbery, yams, hard, and had the nerve to add more cinnamon. This was a complete embarrassment, because I recommend this chapter.

The waitress was super professional and gave us suggestions from the menu items. She suggested the Peaches Punch (rum and positive vibes) and she did not disappoint. Peaches Punch was sweet and citrus. My fam is southern, migrated from North Carolina to Brooklyn, so I am not a stranger to southern food. My mother was a sou cook in a small water front hotel on the intercostal waterway, so I confess I am a chair side critic of collard greens. I do not like collards simmered too sweet. I also like to add vinegar. So we ordered the fried catfish, cornbread, and collard greens. The catfish arrived seasoned and crispy. I added a dash of Texas Petes hot sauce, they seriously offer a variety of hot sauce. Love it. The collard greens were inviting, aromatic, and tender. The smell of the collards reminded me of Sunday dinner after training. Yes, it tasted old school, I greatly appreciated the southern vibe and the great southern hospitality. The main entrées were affordable and the drinks were worth every penny. This is within walking distance from my home. I will definitely return for collard greens. Please make a date to sit out on the sidewalk and order those collards.

I wanted to love it so much especially since TikTok critic/MMA fighter Keith Lee visited them in 2023, but my experience was not like his. I want to say that online reviews are almost about accurate. They were out of cold salads and collard greens which was an issue for other customers at times as well. No problem, they were super helpful and offered an alternative but not a good one. I had steamed vegetables that mashed in my mouth like mashed potatoes when I took a bite. I did end up going to another spot for collard greens and potato salad because you can't have soul-food without that. I had the rib dinner with mac n cheese and yams and a tiny piece of complimentary cornbread. The ribs definitely taste amazing but they don't take off the membrane in the back which is slimy and gross. I left that part behind. The yams were sweet and good BUT.....that mac n cheese is NOT soul-food Mac n cheese. Here's the thing I figured out, they use such little cheese but season the noodles very well that you don't truly notice unless you love mac n cheese, which I do, so I noticed it lacked so much cheese but had seasoned noodles. The rib dinner was a 3/5 because ribs were great but sides needed help. I had rice and peas as an additional side and fried wings. The wings were ATROCIOUS! I ate the smallest one and didn't eat the rest. How can you serve such huge feathered wings like that? It was a nightmare. The feathers being on it turned me off. This tells me they don't make their food with care, they move quick to be one and done and I want my food cooked with love and care. They were also frozen wings that were thawed and seasoned, I know the difference. The rice and peas were okay 3/5 as well. Overall the food was not worth the hype. Customer service was beautiful for sure but the food was not it.

We started with the Brooklyn Wings. Now one thing I want to say is all of their food is piping HOT - like you better blow on it or risk burning the tip of your tongue hot and I loved that! The wings were delicious- both sweet and spicy at the same time and enough that each of us got 3-4 pieces each. For entrees, my mom ordered the turkey meatloaf and holy cow did she get two HUGE pieces of meatloaf that looked good - and she said it was good. It had a mushroom gravy on it and a side of mashed potatoes - she loved her meal and had plenty to take home. I actually ordered the fried shrimp app with Mac and cheese and creamed spinach for my entree. The shrimps were good but they're fried in cornmeal so they were really crunchy. The Mac and cheese was good but the creamed spinach was very bland. For dessert we shared brownies and ice cream it was pretty typical. Southern Comfort in the Heart of Brooklyn…read more If you're craving true Southern soul food in Brooklyn, this hidden gem is worth every minute you spend circling for a parking spot. Located near Vanderbilt and Atlantic Avenue, this spot delivers that down-home flavor that's hard to find in the city. We ordered the catfish, potato salad, okra and tomatoes, fried chicken, mac & cheese--and let me tell you, every bite hit the spot. The portions were generous, and I was so full I didn't even get a chance to try the peach cobbler that everyone keeps raving about. But you better believe I'm saving room for it next time. The customer service was just as impressive as the food. From the moment we walked in, it felt like home. I had a warm, genuine conversation with the husband, and it honestly felt like chatting with my grandfather back down South. The ambiance matches the vibe--simple, old-school Southern charm that adds to the experience. I stopped in today to take food for work and I am currently sooo disappointed. I ordered a meatloaf dinner. Here we go... The meatloaf was dried out, definitely stretched with breadcrumbs and completely void of flavor. I asked for gravy all over. I guess they didn't hear me. The macaroni was bland and colorless and the cheese was missing! This mac had all the flavor of a hospital meal that was prepped for a patient on a salt free, seasoning free, flavor free diet. The collard greens tasted frozen maybe??? No specks of meat or flavor of any kind. Mitchell's Soul Food is CASH ONLY and it was nearly empty when I arrived. I can see why. I am unabashedly greedy and also not big on wasting money so I forced it down. Every bite made me sad. The only kinda/sorta "pro" was the low price. Still not worth it. Never again!

If you have 10, 15, or 20 items on the menu but most of them are unavailable, what's the point? That pretty much describes my experience with Harlem Seafood Soul. I've driven past this food truck many times while operating the M60 and finally decided to stop and give it a try. Looking at the menu online, I was excited. Catfish, whiting, mac and cheese, collard greens, shrimp and grits, and other soul food favorites all sounded amazing. The problem came when I arrived around 1:30 in the afternoon. I wanted catfish. Sold out. I wanted whiting. Sold out. I wanted mac and cheese. Sold out. I wanted collard greens. Sold out. At that point, most of the options available were shrimp dishes. For a place called Harlem Seafood Soul, I expected more of the soul food menu to still be available in the middle of the day. If items are regularly selling out that early, then either more food needs to be prepared or the menu needs to better reflect what's realistically available. Another thing that surprised me is that I've visited other food trucks and carts that have been featured on TV shows, and many of them have an app, online ordering, or some way to place an order ahead of time. Where do you order Harlem Seafood Soul from? If I'm spending over $30 for lunch, I'd like the option to place my order in advance and have it ready when I arrive. To be fair, the wait wasn't long, and my frustration isn't with the people working there. Everything looked good, and I'm still planning to try the shrimp and grits. My issue is with availability. It's hard to get excited about menu items that aren't there when you arrive. I love supporting Black-owned businesses, and I want Harlem Seafood Soul to succeed. That's exactly why I'm leaving this review. The food sounds delicious, but you've got to do better with keeping your signature menu items available. Customers shouldn't have to arrive before lunchtime is over to have a chance at ordering them. This visit felt like a disappointment. Honestly, I'm not even sure if I want to give it another try. When a menu gets you excited and then most of what you came for isn't available, it leaves a bad first impression.

Now that we have that out of the way, on to my review. Upon entering this magical place, I was greeted by a lovely woman behind the counter named Pat, whom is part owner and the wife of the chef. She politely asked me if I had ever been there before, to which I replied, no. Before I could even get that one syllable word out of my mouth, she had already prepared me several samples of what would later become my dinner. Mac and cheese. perfectly prepared macaroni (not mushy) enveloped in Rich and creamy cheese (not saucy or soupy at all) It was if the macaroni and the cheese had combined to become one, glorious, velvety smooth creation whose both flavor and texture were near heavenly. Beef Short ribs. Masculine chunks of slowly cooked beef that is fatty and rich, falling off the bone. (no fork necessary) Stewed in its own natural juices, along with some other secret ingredients I'm sure. The meat is soft and tender and requires little chewing if any. Goes very well with the collard greens Collard Greens: A delightful and hearty stewed green that I am almost certain is made with some kind of pork fat (pork fat = awesome). Both savory and sweet, these green are a great accompaniment to any of the main dishes. Oxtail: for those of you whom are unfamiliar, this is exactly what it sounds like. The meat on the tail. It is very bony, but when cooked right (as they do here), it is soft and creamy, and it full of flavor. The correct way to eat oxtail, is pick it up with your fingers, and suck the meat off the bone. Jerk Chicken. This might have been my favorite. The chicken itself, is most likely cooked on a grill first. The skin is crispy, snaps when you bite it, and is rubbed with a medley of jerk seasoning that is very intense. The meat itself, is moist, tender and can be peeled off with your fingers. Ask for a side of jerk sauce for dipping. Corn Bread. This is complimentary, but do not dismiss it. It is soft and moist, with flavors of honey and maple syrup. It is a perfect sweet to complement all that savory. As that was all the samples, I was able to stuff down my gullet, I will conclude my review by saying, if you want soul food, and you are in New York proper, then go to Soul Food Kitchen. Say hi to Pat, and ask her to try a few samples. Be warned, you will walk out with a full belly, and then you will eat dinner.
