Try the spicy Ramen and the pork buns! They're delish!! I love how they done have a menu and everything is scribbled on the wall! It's a nice little place with limited tables. Service was quick and it's easy on the pocket as well! It is a little hard to locate as its not on the main street itself. read more

One of the most frustrating experiences in recent memory. Came here at 5:30 with a group of friends (total 5). We were told to go have a drink and come back. After an hour and a half, we went back to check-in and told that they were waiting for two big groups to finish. "Okay cool" so we went to another bar and drank for another hour. When we checked back, one of the big groups left but the 4 seater table had 2 people sitting at it. Also, there were like 8 people that had skipped ahead in line. Our name was on an island by itself. We received a call an hour before they were about to close-- no apology, just a question as to whether or not we were still interested in dining. No thanks bro, taking my business elsewhere for what should've been a relatively quick eat. Either say you aren't accepting groups larger than 4 or give better wait times. Wish I had a photo to post of the food but this is just a photo of a group of disappointed friends buzzed and headed home. read more

This is the ONLY place I will go for ramen in a 25 mile radius! The chicken-based broth is rich and creamy, buttery with juicy flavors, the noodles just perfectly tender and not overdone, the pork chasu melts in your mouth... If you love heat, douse that broth liberally with the spicy savory oil. Mmmmm. My boyfriend and I enjoy having leftovers for later and they have a decent portion but boy, 9 out of 10 times we will just barely roll ourselves out of M Kokko because we HAVE TO FINISH THE BROTH BECAUSE IT IS THAT GOOD. See Exhibit A, attached. That said, we also love the soy garlic chicken, full of flavor and still crispy; and my nostalgic taste buds will occasionally steer me towards the savory jjiajangmyun. I've sneaked bites of the fried chicken sandwich and the curry udon from friends and also liked them too (both food and my nice sharing friends). The green tea tiramisu is also light and lovely on both the eyes and the tongue. Would recommend. The service is also excellent! We've never had a bad experience and our servers were always respectful, polite, and took great care of us. The seating is pretty limited and they don't take reservations, but even during busy hours you can drop by and give them your number and hop over to the Durham Hotel rooftop for a drink until you get a call. Do it. The ramen is worth it. read more

"Korean chicken, noodles, ramen in downtown Durham" This is a VERY small location is immediately next to the Durham Hotel and M Sushi. We came on a Saturday night. Two of us had the chicken rice bowls, and one had the yakisoba. The rice bowl (oyakodon) had seaweed and scallions on top with egg, rice, and chicken below. It was complicated (in a good way) yet very mild in flavor-- so much so that we needed to add some chili oil. It was served with a small bowl of assorted pickles (cucumber, pearl onion, peppers). The yakisoba was spicier-- lots of noodles, chicken, egg, and vegetables. It also had a bit of a "fish" flavor to it that I liked-- not sure if that was in the sauce or what. Positives: + Food quality/ presentation. The presentation was excellent. Everything was artistically prepared. The food tasted "pricey" in that there were many subtle flavors together. Everything was clearly freshly prepared. + Price/ value. Given the above, the pricing of $12 for yakisoba and $11 for rice bowls seemed quite good. And they were a good amount of food, too. + Cozy setting. There are probably only about 8 tables inside, most of which seat 2, but a few seat 4-6. Mixed: +/- Service. Fine but not warm. They seemed harried. We did get refills on our drinks, and we got our bill when asked. Maybe just a rough night given the crowd. Negatives: - No host/ hostess. There's just a clipboard sitting there and you're supposed to write your name on it. The minimal staff were totally swamped and unable to talk with us for the first 30 minutes of our wait. In that regard... - Wait time. We arrived just before 6pm. We were seated at 7:15pm. It was shorter for tables of 2, but that's a really long time. Synopsis: While I applaud the food quality and presentation, and the food tasted "good", it wasn't delicious. Still, I liked the place despite the ridiculous wait. Overall, I feel very conflicted, so I'll go in the middle with 3 stars. Honestly, not sure I'll go back anytime soon, and certainly not with more than one other person. read more

Not bad. They say it was Korean food, but most of the foods were not Korean.... some of them are Chinese and Japanese. yeah.... actually fried chicken was totally Korean. I enjoyed that. But waiters here was the most awful experience for me. Some of them even don't know what they were doing. If you want great food, but not a great waiters, you should go here. read more

Not bad for Asian food in Durham. My 2 friends and I arrived around 5:15 on a Saturday evening. The place was already packed (there's only 8 or so tables) and we waited at least 30 minutes to be seated. Be warned that many of the tables here seat 2, so it's difficult to get a table for a large party. As for food, the menu is fairly limited but well executed. I got the spicy ramen - the broth wasn't too heavy and portions were well sized. The egg was perfectly soft boiled but I wasn't particularly impressed by the rest of the toppings (possibly because the spice masked other flavors). We also got the wings to share which I really enjoyed. The outside was crispy and flavorful while the inside melted in my mouth. I love Korean style wings and these were on par with ones I've had in LA. Overall, this food reminded me of home (Los Angeles) but I wasn't particularly blown away. I'll probably for take out some time to avoid the line. read more

Love M Kokko! It always delivers on perfectly prepared Asian food. The ramen is the best in Durham. We love the biang biang noodles (I haven't told my son that they are vegan and he totally doesn't know). But I admit that for a solid year all I ate was the chicken sandwich. Yes, it is that good. The wait staff is professional and appropriately attentive. They will call you when your table is ready, so sometimes we will get a drink at Pour and come back. If I could I would give it 4.5 stars even though th is excellent (not sold on the pork buns though). It is so small that it is hard to get a table for 3 or more. I have waited and been turned away three times. And they don't take reservations or give any approximate wait times. Pro tip: go early, even for lunch. Leave the third wheel at home. Or call in a to go order or use Uber Eats. But you can't get Ramen to go. It's too hot. Update! They now allow you to add yourself to the waitlist. And they send you notifications when the table is ready but dont go far - you have to get back right away. read more

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! i have never seen anyone been treated with the blatant disrespect that my mom and whole family were treated with at this restaurant. we knew when we came here that there would be a long wait -- it was a busy saturday evening (august 26th at 6:30pm). we waited for around 20 minutes before we were informed via the online queue that we were at the front of the waiting list. however, we were then told by a server that because we were a group of 5, the wait would be much longer and would only be able to be seated outside. why this was not specified from the beginning is beyond me, but regardless, we decided to split into a table for 3 and table for 2 because we didn't wanna sit outside or have to wait so long. we informed the server who nodded and continued doing his job. for the next 20 minutes, we watched people trickle out of the restaurant and were expecting to be seated shortly. however, the server comes out and calls in a party that isn't here. he then goes inside and comes out a second time, calling again for a different party of 2 who are escorted inside. mind you, at this point we had been "first in queue" for 30 minutes and were confused why others were be served before us. we figured it was possible the server was trying to seat our party of 2 and 3 at the same time but nevertheless wanted to see what exactly was happening on their end. my mom goes up to the server and starts asking what is happening and why we are not being seated despite being first in queue. as an important side note, i KNOW what a karen is and how stressful customer service jobs are, being that i have worked for years in one. my mom was definitely frustrated but did not use any vulgar language or an aggressive tone to justify what happened next. her objective was simply to figure out what was the holdup. so imagine our surprise when he rudely interrupts her to talk about how busy he is right now. when my mom tries to explain that she is aware but only trying to inquire as to the state of the situation, he talks over her saying the same thing and eventually shuts the door on my mom's face mid sentence. in shock, we promptly left the restaurant and found somewhere else to eat. to be clear, we can excuse and understand a long wait, and we are sympathetic to the server during busy hours. what we cannot excuse or understand is blatant disrespect that was utterly uncalled for. my family is appalled by this display of customer service and the disrespect showed towards my mom. if you're looking for a fun, tasty night out, go anywhere but here. read more

M Kokko is a tiny joint that shares a kitchen with the amazing M Sushi. And when I say tiny, I mean it! I counted a total of 22 chairs in the narrow hallway like establishment. One wall is a dedicated chalkboard menu, where you'll see they only offer up 5 different menu items. *Of note, they were not offering the Rice Bowl at the time, and as I was eating, one of the staff came and changed the entire Rice Bowl entry altogether! So it's not the same one you see on my picture anymore. It's a cute simple place and it definitely delivers some delicious food, but the restaurant wasn't without its faults. I only tried 2/5 dishes: the KFC wings (korean fried chicken) and the Ramen. KFC wings are made with a soy garlic glaze and the skin has a remarkably crunchy texture; served with daikon and collards on side. Portions are huge! I didn't count, but it was at least 8 wings. I thought the wings were well worth the price and hella tasty! I definitely think they are as good as Soo Cafe's and am glad to have KFC closer to my home. The ramen was good but not amazing, it looked like a Tonakatsu ramen with milky broth. I do think the ramen here was tastier than Dashi's though. It definitely looks and smells tastier. It comes with soft boiled egg, pork belly, bamboo, wood ear mushroom, and cilantro. The chili oil is a great addition to the broth as well, giving it a nice kick. The worst part about the overall experience was the service. It was painfully slow and the one server there seemed really stressed. Tables didn't already come with chopsticks or utensils at the ready, which just underscored the issue. But the server himself was really nice and nothing was his fault, just a systems problem I think. I would definitely return but if you want to dine here, give yourself AMPLE time. read more

I used to really this place, it spawned a love for ramen which I previously didn't have. My experience was very... okay. The ramen is good, considering (ramen) options in the RTP area are limited. Not as good as any ramen in a big city. I think their theme is Korean fusion, but everything besides the chicken is pretty far from Korean-style food. The menu items are unique, but pretty pricey for the amount and quality. The space is also quite small, so we had to wait almost an hour to be seated around 6:30 on a Tuesday. Parking wasn't an issue, as there's a large parking deck about a block away, which is free if you leave after 7pm on a weekday, or anytime on a weekend. Not much else to say - it was ok & I'm not that excited about going back. read more

I had the garlic soy wings here, it's the best I've had. I also had the spicy ramen here, and I must say, the chashu is excellent, the broth is not too salty, the ramen altogether has great flavor. However, I think their ramen in my opinion has too much chili oil. I prefer my ramen spiced with a paste. Still, worth a visit. read more

My friend and I decided to try out M Kokko last night and I am so glad we did. We had to wait about an hour to be seated, but it was a Saturday night and there was plenty to walk around and see in the area. It's also a very small restaurant, which I liked because it wasn't overbearingly loud like some places can be Once we were seated, it was well worth the wait. The restaurant atmosphere was cozy and the service was very attentive but not overbearing. Most importantly, the good was AMAZING. We tried the soy garlic KFC, ramen, jjajiang mian, and pork buns. The entrees were great - super comforting noodle dishes and I was excited to try the jjajiang mian since I had never had anything like it before. It did not disappoint! My favorite items though were the appetizers. The KFC were the crispiest, juciest wings I've ever had and the pork in the pork buns was well flavored and super tender. I would definitely reorder those items time and time again! read more

We ordered their ramen kit to make at home through the online store. There's a sign on the door explaining that M Kokko takeout is actually picked up from the entryway to M Sushi (around the corner). The instructions to prepare the kit were easy to follow and the results were delicious! The pork belly is tender and has a tasty roasted flavor. The broth is flavorful and not too oily or salty, and the noodles had a great chewy texture after following their instructions. There is a good balance between the broth, the noodles, and the toppings. Overall, this is definitely the best bowl of ramen I've had in Durham! read more

This was unfortunately quite distasteful. The waiter recommended Ramen which sounded good and looked good on pictures but ach it was not good. The ramen noodles tasted gritty with super strong beef flavor - hard to to eat. The pork was half fat and the rest was couple of mushrooms and broth. This was a $16 dish. I hate giving bad reviews but our family spent here $100 and left hungry with bad taste. read more

Biang biang noodles are incredible. Homey small hidden place with great food and service.

Located in downtown Durham, M Kokko is an absolute gem! The food is delicious, relatively cheap, and really embodies the idea of a fusion restaurant. The decorations are also modern and trendy (I especially like the wall menu concept), and the entire atmosphere is very welcoming! I highly recommend it to anyone in Durham. The only thing that is keeping this review from being 5 stars is the long wait time. M Kokko has very low seating capacity and I ended up having to wait 30+ minutes to get a seat during a random Wednesday evening. However, once in the restaurant, the food came in a very timely manner! read more

My five stars are solely for the food, because that's all I can think about since I went to M Kokko last week! I got the biang biang noodles (vegan), and the dish was mind-blowingly delicious. The meal was the most satisfying I have had in a while. The noodles are broad and soft, coated in a rich but not greasy brown sauce (which I think is onion based), tossed with vegetables and tofu. The sauce had so much depth and the tofu so tasty, that I kept thinking they had accidentally given me a meat dish. Savory, spicy, sweet, yet simple-- the dish definitely packs a punch. I came on a week night, around 630, and there was no wait- although I've heard it can be quite long. The restaurant is pretty small, and no frills. But the staff is friendly, the prices are reasonable, and the food is... fantastic. Cannot wait to go back! read more

This was a favorite among me and my college friends - small menu but everything on it hit the spot. They usually had only 2-3 vegetarian options, but I have tried them all and they have always been great. The deviled eggs (when on the menu) are to die for, and the ramen is always good. A warm, hearty, filling meal. However, it takes forever to get a table if you go past 6:30/7 PM (specially on a weekend). You can't call and reserve, you have to be present to put your name down. So I would recommend going at 5 PM and your wait might be 20 minutes (totally worth). I once waited an hour when I went at 7. read more

I personally wasn't a fan of the 5 item menu and lack of customization and choices (however if you are very indecisive about what to order, this is the place for you). We have been in just about every sushi place in Raleigh/Cary/Durham area. We are super picky when it comes to preparation/presentation/taste and quality of fish. My husband took me to M sushi on my bday and I didn't have much expectation. Finding good Japanese food in USA is quite a problem. Normally we go to Waraji and are very much satisfied with everything. So, M sushi was amazing. Sashimi were absolutely excellent, rolls were ok. I'm pretty sure we will get a huge sashimi plate next time we go. It looked like the place had so many food options so we would be interested in trying something new, maybe ramen. Surprisingly, we quickly decided on adding this place to our list of favorites. I was so much enjoying the food that totally forgot about taking a good photo. We are looking forward to coming again and hopefully having the same experience with other menu items. The fish was very fresh and that is the MOST important thing! The place is so cozy, sort of hidden underground but very well decorated and thought through. We enjoyed our time, thank you very much! Oh yes, the service wasn't good so pay extra attention to it. And nobody cared for my Bday, why?!:) at least a cake or smth lol. And still, you deserve 5 stars. read more

Ordered a single bowl of soup for takeout and it took over an hour for them to have it ready. Every time I asked about my order they said "a couple more minutes" until I'd spent 25 minutes waiting outside in the least comfortable seating area ever. Hate to be dramatic but both times I've been here have been incredibly frustrating. Won't be returning again. UPDATE: A few hours after writing this review I also got incredibly sick after only eating the vegan udon. Ive never left a Yelp review but I had the worst experience here. Beware. read more

Fully recognize I'm late to the game here but just a quick check in to say that M Kokko is friggin' fantastic. Vegan or not (I'm not!), the biang biang noodles are one of the best dishes in town. Flavorful, filling (but not too filling), and crave-worthy for sure. Can't speak for my date's bibimbap but it looked awesome. While I probably won't come back during peak time, I'm excited to return frequently during less busy hours. As an aside, I noticed a handful of people calling in orders to go. Never would have occurred to me but probably not a bad idea if you live nearby or plan on eating your meal shortly after pickup. Or, if you like cold Korean fried chicken. read more

Hands down the best tonkotsu ramen in the area! Their tonkotsu ramen is still unbeatable in my heart and M Kokko isn't even a ramen place. I dream and daydream about their ramen sometime. The broth is very rich and creamy, all the ingredients are fresh and complement well. Their pork belly is so good, love it on both the ramen and buns. We've had their own version of jjajangmyeon and it's a fun twist, very different from traditional. M Restaurants, however, are dinner only on Saturdays and closed Sundays and Mondays so I have difficulty timing my visits here. Be prepared for a long wait on Saturday dinnertime. They don't accept reservations over the phone or online, you have to come and sign in at the door to get a spot on the queue. M Kokko has very small space for indoor seating, though I think they recently added a couple of tables on the alley outside the restaurant. Still, however, this is not a spot for group dates. Love coming here with my +1 though! read more

First time here at M Kokko, the restaurant is smaller that it looks from the outside. Definitely a cozy seating set up, but not uncomfortable. We came on a Saturday night with no reservation, we waited about 30 minutes to get seated. Once seated, our server was pretty prompt on serving water and taking our orders. I ordered the Pork Belly Ramen and my boyfriend ordered the Jja Jang Mein (which is Korean black bean noodles). We enjoyed both dishes, very nicely executed. However, I did feel that it was more of a "fusion" version of traditional jja jang myun, but didn't mind it at all! Very tasty nonetheless! I would definitely come back, but maybe make a reservation next time! read more

Small restaurant, but great food. However, menu is really pork heavy. Have been trying to get a spot at this place forever, but it's always so busy and doesn't take reservations. One Saturday when we had time, decided to just go and wait here for an hour to get a table. Took us an hour and half but managed to secure a spot for two at last. We ordered the chicken wings (not pictured), curry noodles and biang biang niodles with chicken. The curry noodles are veggie based and taste so bloody flavorful, I can't even. Couldn't get enough. The biang biang was really good in terms of the noodles, but there was too much oil in it for my liking. The star of the show were the wings though. I couldn't stop devouring them, they're coated in sweet spicy sauce and so crispy, easily best wings I've had in the area. Next time I'm ordering takeout for sure, the ambience/ sit-down setup is not worth the long wait but I'm coming back for the wings. read more

M kokko used to be spectacular but now, meh. Maybe they just have an off night but this often happens when restaurants start opening additional locations. Off the beaten path, this little restaurant has been on my list for a very long time. Looking for a place to have a small girls night for my birthday, I knew this would be the perfect opportunity to try it out! When I say small, it's small, there's probably only seating for 5-6 groups at a time and there's only one waiter working the entire floor by themselves. Service was just a little bit slower than usually as a result, but he's was easy to get a hold of and took care of us well. We tried the ginger and peach mule as recommended by the waiter and boy did they mean ginger! I tasted nothing else but fistfuls of ginger, which when fresh, can be slightly overwhelming. For my entree I went with the hainan chicken which BLEW. MY. MIND. I had seen this dish often on social media and Youtube and could never figure out why people loved it so much because poached chicken? It just sounded and looked so incredibly bland. But I had to see what all of the hype was about and now I'm beating myself up for not having tried it sooner! While the chicken is poached, it makes it incredibly tender and juicy. The bits of crispy skin were absolutely sinful and the toppings were so flavorful and delicious over a bed of soft white rice. It's was so flavorful and definitely not what I thought it was going to be. My friend got the spicy ramen and drank every last drop, it looked amazing and she said it was delicious. All in all, a pretty great experience. On the pricier side, but a fun place for a girls dinner. read more

M Kokko - Hainan chicken - Korean Near Me - Durham, North Carolina

M Kokko is perfectly simple. They don't take reservations, there are 20 seats, and the menu is written in chalk on the wall. If you have trouble finding M Kokko, you're not alone. It's in an alley next to The Durham hotel, close to the Durham Armory. I've only been a few times, so I'm still exploring the menu. The first time I went I tried the KFC wings, which are must-do if you're a crispy wing lover like me. On my 2nd visit, I tried the spicy chicken bibimbap, which was a great option on a summer day when I didn't feel like a hot bowl of ramen. For drinks, I recommend getting a bottle or two of the Sacred Mist nigori (unfiltered, cold sake); get one bottle for every 2-3 people. If you've ever had the Sho Chiku Bai nigori (usually $8 or so per bottle at other local restaurants) and enjoyed it, you may never want to drink it again after you try Sacred Mist! Pro tip: since there are only 20 seats, you may want to consider eating here right when they open. On a Saturday evening in the summer, there was a line outside of almost 20 people before they even opened the doors. read more

Long overdue review, and not for lack of wanting to get it done. Stopped here with a friend and was certainly wowed. Clearly a busy spot, but they offered to place you on a list and call when they had a table available. So we wandered next door to a bar to have a drink until our table was free. Opted for the KFC fried chicken and it was - to be sure - the best fried chicken wings I've ever eaten. I opted for the garlic soy glaze, and it was delicious, tangy, well-balanced. The daikon and kale greens on the side were a great complement. In the future I might recommend sharing this as an app, and then grabbing something for a main dish as well, though this dish is certainly a must-have. Will be back! read more

This is now a personal favorite in the Triangle area--m kokko is a standout. We came here for a friend's birthday dinner and luckily we arrived pretty late around 9pm, so our wait for a table for 6 wasn't terribly long..maybe 30 minutes? We just walked over to Pour Taproom and had a couple rounds before we got a text that our table was ready. I didn't realize how small the interior space is but wow! If anything, that helps with quality control because everything is made in small quantities and with lots of love and care. Our table had the pork buns, spicy and regular chicken wings, spicy and regular ramen, jjajjangmyun, and the chicken sandwich. Everything was phenomenal. I love that the jjajjangmyun came with pork and a fried egg on top which totally elevates the simple dish. The ramen broth was incredibly flavorful and the char siu pork was perfectly cooked. The chicken sandwich was gigantic and apparently very delicious with yummy pickles. I can't say one negative thing about the entire meal! I highly recommend checking out m kokko--just be prepared for a long wait! read more

At first I was a little hesitant about walking through many shadowy alleys to just to find this restaurant; however, it was completely worth the dark adventure to find this hidden gem. This place is so yummy and adorable! We stopped here on our self-guided "mini tour of downtown Durham" last night. I love the experimental concept of the restaurant from the food menu being written on a giant chalkboard for the customers to view and order from to the Japanese/Korean infusion. Definitely get a carafe of the hot sake (pictured). Ordered the chicken breast sandwich - the side salad was literally 100/100; so green and fresh and the house dressing was tasty and the portion was perfect. I have a distaste for salads that are overpowered with the dressing. Also pictured is the JJiang noodles in black bean sauce. Only reason I gave them a 4 instead of a 5 was the lack of gluten free options. Definitely make this a must stop on your downtown Durham tour! read more
