I stopped by Chosun Ok with some friends, and since it wasn't too busy when we arrived, we were able to get a table right away even with our larger group. Service was friendly, but it seemed like it was just the owners working, so once our food came out, they didn't really have a chance to check in on us much. We ordered a variety of dishes to share family style, which was nice for trying a little bit of everything. That being said, nothing really stood out to me -- everything was just okay, which honestly fits the name pretty well. Overall, if you're craving Korean food and don't have many options nearby, Chosun Ok is worth checking out. I am not one to generally complain about stuff, but this place was quite lame. It started when my wife ordered a glass of Chardonnay, and it arrived and was slightly orange/brown, totally skunked. I noticed that they store the open wine bottles out on a shelf (not refrigerated after opening), no wonder it was bad. They did at least open a fresh bottle, but off to a bad start. We ordered some boiled dumplings, short ribs, and bulgogi for some good old Korean bbq. As I sat and wondered when they would fire up the (electric) grill, the dumplings arrived. They were ok, nice side sauce. Then to my surprise, the bbq sides arrived, still no grill warm-up. The sides looked kind of tired, not particularly fresh or appetizing. Next comes our two plates, already cooked (I guess in the back kitchen), not on the table mounted grill (this is what Korean bbq is, right?). Well the short ribs were decent, but the bulgogi looked unlike any bulgogi i ever received before, more like shredded beef one might get on a Chinese restaurant, not freshly cooked on our grill. No lettuce to eat the meats/sides traditionally. Overall a less than mediocre experience that I would not recommend. Save your money. read more

I had heard from a friend that Chosun Ok was a chain that was pretty common on the West Coast, but upon walking in, I was pleasantly surprised that this location certainly did not feel that way. Chosun Ok is probably as authentic as Korean food can get in the area, and I'm very happy to say that it certainly scratches the itch. Service is kind and timely, and the food tastes great - I knew from the moment that the diverse set of banchan came out that I was in the right place. The toppings themselves are seasoned really lightly, but they're not entirely bland and they do give you a gochujang sauce. I visited around 5:30 PM, but all the side dishes looked like they had been sitting out for a long time(completely dried out)-I guess poor foreigners would just eat it without realizing the side dishes had been sitting there for over 30 minutes.-. The lettuce they served even had wilted and bug-eaten leaves. When I quietly and politely mentioned to the waitress (presumably the owner's daughter) that the side dishes were dried out, she started throwing plates and menus on the table while serving. Nice little Korean/Chinese restaurant with a friendly staff. Inside it is not the trendy gentrified feel you get with newer places such as boxyard down the road and that's a good thing. Casual atmosphere that is perfect for a weekday meal or lunch. Korean food has a lot of fermented veggies and this is true to authenticity with a variety of them in most dishes. Good portion sizes and quiet dining area. Bibimbap is of course a staple and it doesn't disappoint here with a hot plate to keep it warm during your entire meal. Parking is usually ok but the vehicle garages in the same strip mall can sometimes take up a lot of the spaces with customers vehicles. I happened upon Chosun Ok BBQ this weekend while visiting Durham. It is tucked off into a shopping center off of Hwy. 54 with a Pizza Hut in the parking lot. The restaurant storefront caught my eye because it basically says "Korean BBQ", and I love Korean food. I was greeted very warmly when I first opened the door. The inside of the restaurant is very clean and set up for dine-in, however I requested take out, and was immediately assisted with my takeout order. Korean food is meant to be enjoyed in groups, so the menu pricing is based on the servings being for more than one, etc. If you order a single combo, look to pay something like $15-20 for all the fixings. I ordered the Bulgogi Beef Combo and my food came in less than 10 minutes and then I was out the door. Y'all! First of all, I had enough food for me to eat three full servings. I filled my plate twice on the night I purchased the food, then had enough to eat again the following day for dinner! And yes, I was stuffed every time!!! This was a good portion of food. I'm glad I got the combo with soup, and not the Bulgogi Platter. I may have been eating Korean BBQ for a week! LOL But seriously, Chosun Ok BBQ also has some seriously delicious food, and it wasn't so spicy that I had to drink a gallon of water after each bite. I literally loved everything! I have favorited them in my list of "must return to" places whenever I am back in Durham. The meat, the kimchi, pickled veggies, the kimchi soup...everything was absolutely delicious! We usually get the Korean Style Grilled Beef Ribs and Soft Tofu Stew Combo, but we've also tried the Rice Cake Soup with Dumplings, all of which were great! The beef ribs that are part of the combo are a bit small, but we would order it again nonetheless.  However, on another occasion, we dined in and ordered the Seafood and Green Onion Pancake, Short Rib Soup, and the Pork Back-Bone Stew. Although the pancake and pork back-bone stew were good and flavorful, we were disappointed by the short rib soup. There were only 3 tiny pieces of beef in the soup, and the radish flavor in the broth was extremely overpowering while lacking beef flavor. We would return to Chosun Ok whenever we crave Korean food, but we would probably look to try other menu items. read more

A little bit pricey but worth it for the authentic Korean options and taste, as well as the proximity in Durham. The convenience of ordering delivery was so easy. And can we discuss how CUTE this packaging is??? So neat and saveable for later. The kalbi was cooked well and easy to eat in small pieces. Great variety of fresh bonchon. Seafood pancake had good flavor but was a bit soggy (I prefer crispier outside dough to balance the soft chewiness of the squid/octopus). Finally, the soybean paste soup hit the spot, but definitely tasted better in the stone pot during the last two times I came to the restaurant in person. The food here is the highlight, it's rich and perfectly cooked and presented, and delicious! We got the mandu gui to start, which came out after all the delicious pickled banchan. The banchan was all fresh and crisp with lots of flavor. The mandu gui (fried dumplings) was incredible, clearly homemade and bursting with meat and veggies, and perfectly crisped. I got the pork bulgogi and my husband got the galbi dolsot bibimbap. They both came out sizzling and smelling terrific, very quickly. My pork was rich, only a bit spicy with all the best bacon flavors. There was tons of it and it came with a small silver covered dish of rice to stay hot. The bibimbap in the hot stone bowl (dolsot) ahad all our favorite banchan and more, with amazing crispy rice, and stayed ultra hot through the whole meal. The owner also brought us the bottle of "sauce to go with it". There was also complimentary miso soup, and when I ordered green tea it was excellent loose tea with "corn tea" (the owner said) that tasted divine. So the atmosphere inside is slick and trendy with hardwoods and box lanterns a very clean, new, and fresh feeling. It's often empty feeling though, since it's rarely full, and feels an odd place to have any sort of private conversation. They've got a TV playing Korean shows which helps with the quiet atmosphere. The owner is attentive, but a tad brusque -- not in a bad way, just different from typical Western customer service style. Once we got used to her talking and listening while walking away from our table, we realized that's just her style. She was very sweet otherwise offering suggestions and recommendations with what we'd like and telling us about the meats used and what's good. Just know it can be a bit off-putting if you're used to fawning Applebee's waiters. In short, this place is great, with amazing Korean food. $46 gets you a giant beef bowl, tons of pork bulgogi, plenty of dumplings, and banchan and soup. Not bad at all. read more

I was really looking forward to this, but the bulgogi was meh and severely overpriced for what you get ($25 for about 1/2 cup of beef strips), the kimchi stew was watery and needed heat, the kimchi itself was limp and lifeless, not snappy like it should be. The kimchi pancake was decent, unfortunately a bit soggy from the delivery. Though it was our saving grace for an otherwise disappointing dinner. Definitely the best Korean food in the Durham area! I've been in multiple times and have enjoyed each of my meals here. I will admit that it's not the best Korean food I've ever had, but for the area, it blows other restaurants out of the water in terms of quality, price, and quantity. The service is great, the prices are good, and the overall atmosphere is perfect. I've tried their Kimchi Jeon, Dduk Guk, Dduk Mandu Guk, and loved all of them. I will say that the kimchi is on the milder side, but still delicious. I found the broth of the soups to be a bit thin, but the flavors are still delicious. I love the variety of the menu as well, as there are so many great options to choose from. Also ugh the BANCHAN! They give you so so much, and each is absolutely delicious. Firstly, I have to say that I'm astounded that there's actually a Korean business out here. My brother used to live near here, and I've spent a lot of time in my life in the RDU area, and if there's one thing that I've always observed about the area is the sheer lack of Korean businesses in the area. I was passing through with my mom, and she apparently had some old friends who had temporarily relocated to Durham, and asked us to stop by. They took us out to lunch, and cited a "nearby Korean restaurant" and I was kind of like lol no way, but from what they explained is that this place really catered to a lot of the Korean students who went to Duke, which there are a litany of jokes right there, but we'll leave that off of Yelp reviews. Anyway, they're pretty much right off of I-40 if you take exit 278, and they're in a shopping center that shares a parking lot with a Taco Bell and Pizza Hut. They're pretty small and nondescript and easy to miss, but they're towards one of the ends of the L shaped building. Entering the establishment, it's a fairly modern yet traditional decor, and very simplistic. The place can seat maybe 30-40 diners, and the tables have grills built into them for all the people who think Korean food is solely bbq. Naturally, the music playing was K-pop, who I have no idea, my wife is the expert on all that stuff, but at least it wasn't blasting, and my table could have comfortable conversations. Service is very prompt, diligent and typical of lots of Korean restaurants that serve non-Koreans (IYKYK). Everyone at my table ordered a stew of some sort, as their menu has all the typical Korean stews. Yuegaejjang for me, since I was told theirs was good, and my mouth is starting to water just thinking about it, but we also got a seafood pajun (appetizer pancake). The quality of all the food was outstanding, and for an area that's devoid of lots of Korean businesses, this Chosun OK's delivered well and satisfied my expectations. The price is a little bit on the high side, but I chalk that up to the people that running the place capitalizing on customers not knowing that their price is a little bit on the high side, so good on them for getting paid. Overall, I was very pleased with my meal there, and it definitely hit a spot that I don't get to hit as often as I like to these days, much to the dismay of my own heritage. Kudos to this business for helping spread the word that Korean food is more than just barbecue and exposing more people to just how awesome it is. Five for food; 4 for polite if slightly indifferent service. I haven't been here in several years but decided to give it a chance after seeing more positive reviews recently. The boiled mandu was excellent- juicy, porky and so flavorful it didn't need the ganjang. The yukgaejang was also excellent- deep broth, just the right amount of spice, perfect ratio of vegetables, noodles, and shredded beef with an egg cracked inside.
