a plate of quesadillas and salsa
Ted G.

A good experience here has about the same lifespan as two scoops of ice cream on a hot summer day! They were one of the few dining options in town that was close enough to walk to and offered a menu of decent variety, unfortunately what appeared to be a great dining experience quickly went straight south as the dinner rush picked up and any organization went right out the window. We were fortunate enough to enjoy our entrees within a reasonable amount of time, entrees that were large enough to not warrant any need for sides, especially when you're thinking of pairing a side of potatoes to one of their quesadillas. The quesadilla's were just that, ordinary quesadilla's and a bit overly cooked. Unfortunately, it took well over 45 minutes to pay the check and collect the dessert to go. The servers are also bussing tables and working in the kitchen, while the hostess / server is the only person who can process a check. Unfortunately, the servers seem to forget to drop off the bills to the hostess while she is at the register. I wouldn't even call it controlled chaos, just chaos, and I would not return. Cheers!

Fried scallop salad

This is a sweet little restaurant in the village of Oriental, NC. The staff members are always friendly. I've tried much of the menu over the past 3 years, and my favorite go-to item is this fried scallop salad. It's a winner.

Great local eatery with huge portions, I had the shrimp and grits, the shrimp were local and the grits excellent. David had the short ribs, he liked but didn't love them. The red velvet cake was out of this world. Great service and a nice clean eatery!

After you read the long list of options you order at the counter and they bring it out to you. Super friendly locals run it and it's very clean and spacious inside with seating and outside seating. Drinks and chips and a few sweet treats also available . I had the slim mozzarella sub which was filled with veggies and drizzled Italian dressing in a nice sub hoagie. The salt and vinegar kettle chips were great too. I shared a brownie with my friends and it was delicious. Tasted homemade. My sandwich was nice and fresh and filled me up for my 4 hour drive. My friends had the Big Neuse sub which came on a hoagie too and chock full of meat and veggies. The pizza quesadilla my other friend got looked really good and filling. Full of pepperoni and cheese on a tortilla , she took half home. We had a great early lunch here and it started to get busy as we got done. I'm sure this is a busy place for locals at lunch and breakfast. Great little place for an easy quick meal. Great service too! Not many places in Oriental so I'm glad I found another good one.

Stopped in at the right time as shortly after multiple families came in. Definitely can see this being a busy spot pre/post church. Was a little surprised about the lemon juice packets for my water, first I have seen that. I enjoyed my meal. Everything hit the spot with my order. My grandfather's poached eggs were overcooked but he enjoyed it all. Other things that stuck out was they had no OJ, overheard the waitress tell a young boy they were out of apple juice, and they were not serving french toast. Maybe staffing issues with it being Labor Day weekend but I would have thought having a fully stocked kitchen would be important. If traveling through I would pop in for some grub, it is better than the Mc. Donalds up the road.

The FOOD oh my god my $20 plate came out with 4 soggy cold fried oysters and 5 rubbery weird tasting scallops. There was no seasoning on anything it's like everything was microwaved. Food took 45 minutes to come out and there was only 3 people tables in the restaurant. My food tasted like it came out of the bus tray, I'd rather eat out of the foodlion dumpster honestly. Heard the restaurant was great 3 or 4 years ago but now it's horrible. Would not recommend this place to anyone that's ever ate decent food in their life, wouldn't feed my worst enemy this food.

The staff were both knowledgeable and genuinely friendly--such a great combo. The standout for us was the fig & pig toast--absolutely amazing. Didn't happen to us, but when we arrived, there was indeed a train sitting there, and some cars in front, well, they weren't going anywhere anytime soon. Inside is all vibes, kind of set up like an old pharmacy, but slinging cocktails instead, and I have to say, the cocktails were very tasty and well priced. All the tables were full of friend and family groups playing board games and enjoying various flatbreads and libations. Seems like the kind of place the local neighborhoods enjoy and spend quite a bit of time at. At the moment, can't remember the names of the cocktails we got, its been a few months. But I do remember the toasts. This place doesnt have a kitchen in a traditional sense, more like a prep area where they bring ingredients together (that I imagine are made off site) and toast it up to present you with some pretty unique combos and flavors. Honestly, a great way around some of the health code restrictions that start to apply to more in-depth operations while still having a robust menu. We ordered a variety for the 4 of us, as this was dinner that evening. Gettin Figgy with it was a favorite, as were the Pig and the Goat, and the Reuben. Their version of a Cubano was alright, but as could be the case you'd imagine, the pork was a little dry. The caprese was the only one we got that seemed to be a universal thumbs down, the avocado spread wasn't working with the other ingredients. Definitely would come back for some of these toasts, and drinks!

After arriving a few minutes early we were told it would be "a bit" before they could seat us. "A bit" turned out to be more than an hour and even then they sat us at multiple tables throughout the restaurant. After being seated, we were promptly ignored. Fifteen more minutes went by before our sullen, unpleasant server took our drink orders and eventually our breakfast orders. She was not only extremely slow and inattentive, but blatantly disrespectful to one member of our party by rolling her eyes and making gestures when she thought we couldn't see her. Once our order was placed, we waited then waited more. We had decided to leave if our food had not arrived by 12pm and go to Bojangles in Vanceboro, but at 11:50, over three hours after arriving, our food finally showed up. My omelet was enormous and overflowing with ground sausage. It was OK, but would have been better with less sausage. My shredded hash browns were cold. The biscuit that accompanied the omelet was cold and hard. My dining companion liked her french toast, but noted her eggs, though properly prepared over medium, were cold. Same goes for her home fries. However, the buttery syrup, served with her french toast, was served warm and was absolutely amazing. Wow! It made my biscuit edible and was the best part of our meals. The restaurant is attached to a hardware store in a rural part of Craven County. It definitely has a country vibe and was spotless. Incredibly slow and disrespectful service combined with OK-at-best food make it difficult to recommend Voder's Dutch Pantry in any capacity to anyone.

We ordered the Half Chef's Tour, which is their charcuterie, and it was honestly one of my favorite parts of the night. Great variety, really well balanced, and perfect for sharing. It set the tone for the whole meal. The scallop nightly special was perfectly cooked with that golden sear and super tender inside. The rosemary steak had so much flavor and was cooked exactly right. The Brussels were crispy and savory, and even the potstickers were a standout. Nothing felt like an afterthought. Service was perfect for the tapas setting too. Not rushed, we didn't feel over bothered, but not neglected either. Overall, it felt elevated but still comfortable. A great experience without feeling over the top. We'll definitely be back.

We arrived with a reservation (always a wise move), though we were seated immediately, greeted by a gracious host who set our lunch off on the right note. Once settled, we were welcomed by Philip, whose ease and genuine enthusiasm made the experience feel less transactional and more personal. He spoke about the menu with confidence and curiosity, the mark of someone who truly enjoys being there. Drinks came first: my husband ordered a Painkiller easily one of the best we had during our time on the coast while our son stuck with a classic Coke, and I opted for water. As we ordered, it became clear we were leaning fully into the small plates philosophy. When Philip smiled and dubbed us "tapas aficionados," it felt like an acknowledgment rather than a joke and in that moment, we felt perfectly at home. The table filled quickly. Spanish lamb meatballs arrived first, glazed with sriracha and paired with whipped feta and cilantro bold, balanced, and deeply satisfying. Pork pot stickers followed, tender and flavorful, with a soy-ginger dipping sauce and sweet Thai chili providing just the right contrast. The Gambas al Ajillo shrimp bathed in extra-virgin olive oil and garlic, served with crostini, was classic and comforting. But the standout was the Potatoes Bravas: sliced potatoes grilled to a crisp and finished with a spicy brava aioli. They were addictive in the best way, the kind of dish you keep thinking about long after the table is cleared. Circa 81 is polished yet relaxed, clean, and thoughtfully maintained, a place where the food arrives hot, the service feels human, and the atmosphere invites you to linger. It's a restaurant I would happily return to, and one that earned its place among my favorites on the Crystal Coast.
