Lyons is the best I've dealt with during my years living here in NoVa. Not the best roofer, mind you, although he is that. No, I mean the single best tradesman I've dealt with. I called Tom on the recommendation of my next-door neighbor. "You'll love him," she said. "He's done everyone on the block." She was dead-on-the-money right. He was awesome. Actually, he was amazing I needed to get a pinhole leak in the ceiling fixed. It had opened up during Hurricane Irene, and the following week it got worse with the tropical storm that blew through. It was manageable--I was collecting the water at the point of entry in the attic--but I wanted a permanent fix. That's when I called Tom. Let's break down the pros and cons. PROS: 1.) He shows up on time. I don't mean, close to on time. I mean, he made an appointment for 1 pm on Saturday, and by gosh, he hit the actual minute: 1:00 pm exactly. 2.) He's a straight shooter. I'm a handy enough guy, but I'll often play a little dumb with tradesmen to see if they're scamming me. (Believe me, it works.) Tom could not have been a more honest, stand-up guy. This is a little backwards of me, but I even threw him a cream-puff; I acted like I was willing to pay a ton of money for a fix I knew I didn't really need. He didn't bite. "No," he said, "I wouldn't do that if I were you. Instead, I'd fix these three things. They're cheaper and they're all more important ..." That, gentle reader, is GOLD. 3.) He's a decent guy. He fixed the pinhole leak in the roof. He spotted another, and patched it, too. I then asked if he'd fix a downspout that another tradesman had knocked loose. He did. I asked him about installing a ridge vent, and he advised a different fix--one that he doesn't do, mind you--which he won't make a dime off of. And then when I went to settle, I was shocked at how little he asked for. In fact, I almost felt bad because I felt like I owed him more. CONS: 1.) Honestly, truthfully, I can't think of any. Lyons installed my roof in 2015, and it was a great experience! I've had no trouble since. Tom was especially nice to come over and put a patch on the roof while I was in the queue for replacement, because there was a big storm coming and I was afraid of more water damage in my house. Two years after the initial installation, Tom came back to install a vent for a bathroom fan. He is kind, knowledgeable, efficient, and very responsive! I highly recommend for any homeowner, but they seemed especially experienced with the flat, rubber-membrane roofs that are so common in Alexandria. Thanks, Tom & Lyons Contracting! 2022 UPDATE: My neighbor replaced his upper roof and we went in on replacing our shared porch roof. Everything went seamlessly, from the estimate to the installation. I learned today that Tom has employed the same 10 people for 16 years--which says a lot if you're concerned about how the contractors you hire treat their employees. Wow! I called Lyons for an estimate on some small repairs to the flashing and fascia work on my roof. I spoke with Tom and he happened to be in my neighborhood. He went to the house, found and verified the issue, and resealed the flashing within a few minutes (I just asked him for an estimate). He also looked at the other work I wanted to have done and said it was purely cosmetic and didn't recommend I have it fixed as it would be more cost than it was worth. He said the flashing fix was an easy job and didn't ask me for any compensation. I entertained his generosity and asked him a few questions about the state of my roof and when he thought it might need to be replaced. He gave me what I deemed to be an honest assessment. Just had our entire roof replaced with Lyons, Tom is a great guy, very professional and his team did an awesome job. Our entire roof including garage and screened in porch was replaced along with a bunch of plywood and we also had him install 4 new skylights as well as close one off on our main roof. Not only are we impressed and love the work, but our neighbors are also now wanting to replace their roofs since seeing how great ours looks. Tom is easy to work with, honest and trustworthy. He was also very prompt not only with coming out for an estimate, but also when emailing and calling me back super when I had questions or changes. I would definitely use Tom again in the future whenever we had more roofing needs. Some other things to note. An exceptional experience. Called on Wednesday after roofer who installed roof was unresponsive. Tom, the owner, calls my mobile phone that day, schedules an Outlook calendar appointment for Thursday at 10 am. He arrives at 10 am. Surveys the roof, leaves video on my wife's Phone displaying damage and work to be done. He sends electronic estimate and contract that evening, which permits a digital signature to approve. He schedules another Outlook calendar appointment for that Saturday. His crew arrives promptly at 9:30 am, works most of day. Finds additional damage resulting from poor workmanship of initial builder. Cleans up and leaves as if he had not been there. You could not ask for more. The customer experience is the best I have witnessed. I will highly recommend Lyons to anyone seeking roof repair. read more

After a large branch had fallen on our roof in the summer, we noted a leak in our kitchen about a month later. I had a number of roofers come to the house for estimates to fix the immediate problem vs roof replacement. Tom was the only roofer that found the immediate cause of our leak. He patched it up on the spot, and wouldn't accept payment for the quick seal. We discussed the age/condition of our roof (OLD) and what the options were. I appreciated not being pressured or pushed into making a quick decision. We opted to have the roof replaced by his crew a couple of months later. They were efficient and extremely thorough about cleaning up each day. The roof looks great. Tom was easy to work with, generous with his time, and genuinely a nice guy. Tom @ Lyons is an amazing businessman and provided an excellent experience. I had my roof completed by a different company (oops) and some tiles broke. The company I used refused to fix the issue unless I paid them a ridiculous fee. I contacted Tom for a quote and he wrote back "I'm surprised, I wouldn't beat up what is basically a brand new customer over such a small thing. Removing the ridge caps, ridge vent and those adjoining shingles to get out the broken ones might take two hours. And cost a whopping $35 worth of material." THIS IS THE TYPE OF GUY YOU WANT TO WORK WITH. He honors his warranty, workmanship, but above all he is reasonable and wants his customers to be happy. That builds loyalty. Tom is absolutely dedicated to roofing & takes his oath to protect property from water seriously!! He is committed to his profession! I had leaking on the wall of a loft bedroom and called Tom in September 2018 after heavy raining. He listened patiently to my description of the problem and my thoughts that perhaps there was a problem with the flashing on the windows. With his wealth of experience after further discussion, he suggested the leak was from another source, not the flashing. He further asked about the AC system which was indeed in the attic in the loft room. He was correct, it was the AC drain clogged which was fixed. My family's experience with Thomas and Lyons Contracting for our roof repair exceeded our expectations. He was responsive to our online inquiry, and inspected our roof right away. He worked with us and gave us time to figure out how we would handle things financially. Thomas communicated with us throughout the entire process, he even recognized that the wrong shingles were ordered and did not charge us to reorder the correct ones. I would use Lyons for my next roofing job. I had a roof leak, called Tom's number based on a neighbor referral, in between May storms. He took the call around 7:45am, he showed up at the time agreed-upon a few hours later - literally at the exact time; no 2-3 hour window. Full disclosure, I do not always do that. When he arrived, he shared helpful insights, hit the roof, made the fixes and I got me back to work in time for the end of lunch. My fix was simple for someone like him, and I know a full roof is different, but this is my experience and I hope it helps fill his book of business with people reading it. We need more well spoken, competent, professional contractors around the DMV. read more

We had water coming around the chimney into the attic of our 2-story home. I called Lyons, and almost immediately the company's Mike Simpson made an inspection appointment. He came promptly, went up on the roof and quickly reported the problem was not the roof or flashing but deterioration of the chimney mortar, allowing train to get behind the flashing. The chimney cannot be seen well from the ground, and Mike documented the flaking mortar with video, and explained we needed to get someone to replace the mortar. I was impressed. Tom and the team at Lyons did a phenomenal job on our roof and I would highly recommend them to all. Their pricing was competitive without sacrificing any quality. I was expecting to see some trampled on plants and find nails throughout our yard but after the crew left, everything was back to normal, just like it was before they arrived. One month later and I have yet to find a nail or any roofing material in our yard! The roof looks great and Tom made some excellent recommendations to ensure we were totally happy with our choices. Tom is very knowledgeable on a number of different roofing systems, and he helped us pick the right one for our situation and budget. In this case, we used thermoplastic overlay (TPO). Tom explained all aspects of the job, and his bid was very thorough and cost competitive. He communicated with us from bid to completion. They started on time and finished on time. My husband died within the past year and now I'm in charge of all the house needs, which is pretty hilarious. I'd read good things about Lyons Contracting and called Tom to take a look at the place in the house that looked like it was leaking. Tom was up on the roof for a little bit and came down, patching the holes he'd found and charging me nothing! He showed me a video of what he'd done and discussed the need to perhaps have the entire roof replaced within the next several years since the existing tiles are 23 years old and crumbling a bit. Called on a Tuesday morning to request service (leaky roof/rain water dripping through the bedroom ceiling), received a returned call that evening from the owner Tom Petrilli, and scheduled an appointment for the very next morning. He arrived PROMPTLY at 8:30am. He diagnosed the issue and repaired it on the spot for a very reasonable price. I really liked how used his iPhone to video the issue + gave me a "tour" of my rooftop to show me its current condition. We had Lyons put a roof on our house in 2009. They were great to work with. They found several layers of old roofing on the original part of our house and got it all removed. They also found that several of our skylights were leaking and worked with me to decide on how to replace them or roof over them (which we did for 3 of the 5). Tom from Lyons was accurate and honest in his quote. Two years later we had a problem with squirrels getting into a roof joint in the old part of our house. Tom came out for free and constructed and "squirrel block" that's held up great! I'd definitely hire them again. read more

Thomas came out to give me an estimate for a decorative copper porch roof and identified a more urgent roof gutter problem causing leaking and overflow. I was told by other contractors the entire gutter system was failing and was gathering estimates for replacement, however, Lyons Contracting was able to correct the problem by re-mounting, adding two additional downspouts and gutter guards saving me thousands.
