Lyon Hall = great happy hour; food was a letdown. This was my first visit and other than the happy hour, I'm not compelled to go back.
Arrived around 5:45pm on a Saturday. Now, I know they have happy hour that starts at 3 each day of the week, but given that it was fairly early on a Saturday, I wasn't sure what to expect. If you go, it will probably be crowded. Our plan was to start at happy hour and then eat at the bar - our usual MO - but that definitely didn't happen. We were able to snag two seats at the small 'counter' across from the bar, but the bar itself was completely full. So, if you go and are expecting to sit at the bar - definitely go early. Now, I will say that they have great HH specials - I didn't try any of the food but you can't beat $6 wine (and $10 brut rose) - my husband got the white and I got a brut rose. We settled in and enjoyed ourselves for a bit. After about 20 minutes, we realized that the likelihood of us eating at the bar was very low so we decided to ask the hostess if there was any room in the restaurant. She was very nice and offered us a table for two, so that ended up working out nicely.
We settled into our table and still had a bit of our HH wine left, so we didn't order wine right away, but we ordered the pretzels (bonus - free pretzels when you check in on Yelp!). Honestly? This was the best part of the meal. They were warm and fluffy and served with cheddar fondue, honey butter, and spicy mustard - I loved all the dips, but the cheddar one was my favorite, and my normally-doesn't-go-for-sweet-stuff husband loved the honey butter. Next, we decided to split the steak tartare...which was flavorless. I also found it odd that it was served with chips that reminded me of Ruffles - because generally, beef tartare is salty and I didn't understand a salty accompaniment.
At this point, we ordered more wine (they have a decent selection of wines by the glass, and are reasonably priced) and then decided to get steaks. I ordered the petite filet steak and frites and my husband ordered the hanger steak and frites. First, the good - my husband said his was ok, and I tasted it - it was definitely better than mine. Mine, unfortunately, was cooked unevenly (I ordered medium rare - some of it was, some of it was rare, some of it was medium), and again, flavorless. I piled on the salt and pepper (which I NEVER do) and made use of the béarnaise (which was thick and nicely flavored).
I will say we also felt a bit rushed - I know they are crowded and trying to turn tables - but I was very nice in saying to our waiter that I'd prefer to finish the steak tartare before ordering our main courses, because honestly, we weren't sure how full we'd be (this one main reason why we like eating at bars). He was patient after that, which was good.
So...ehhh...2 stars. +1 star for the good happy hour, +1 star for the pretzels and the wines by the glass selection. I can't award any stars for the tartare nor my steak. If I was in the area, I'd come again for the HH, but that's it. read more
