4.5 but rounding up so I don't drop their star rating.
A coworker swore by them and asked me to try it out since the truck was parked nearby, so I decided to give it a try. Initially only planned on hitting the tacos real quick and take off, but since they were parked in front of a bar... why not?
Smart. Although I think it's more strategic since they don't seem to carry any drinks in their truck. The bar they were parked in front of didn't sell any food so it was definitely scratching each other's back situation. Again, smart.
A couple ladies serving food were more than friendly. Not really a rating criteria for me, but always nice. Food came out relatively quick, and like I said, I had gotten myself a glass of beer so the wait wasn't too bad, except for the fact that it was 90 humid degrees outside and I was with my 12 year old daughter so I didn't wanna sit inside with rest of the other patrons. It would have been perfect had it been around sundown with perhaps a bit of breeze. The truck was advertised to be there only till 8pm so it wasn't gonna work out in the dead of summer, but perhaps if they're back during the fall weather, I can see myself hanging out a lot longer.
I'm a stickler for tacos. Anyone who's ever read my reviews on any Mexican joints will realize that I spent a decent amount of time in L.A. and got spoiled with *real* Mexican street food. I do have a soft spot for Taco Bell's of the world since I grew up not knowing what an authentic Mexican food was like. But when it comes to people who advertise themselves as "authentic" Mexican food, I tend to be harsher on them. I guess the point I'm trying to make was that Lyle's tacos were good in their own right, even though they are far from traditional. To their credit, they advertise themselves as a Crepes truck, not a taco truck so that's that.
I'm not a huge sweet crepes person so I was never going to get any crepes. I was told they have a very nice breakfast crepe selection, but I was really there to try out their chicken tacos so I'll save the crepes for my second review. Their tacos came in street taco sizes so it was relatively very easy to eat. (I say relative because... tacos.) I tried a chicken and a chorizo tacos. They were both surprisingly good. They used flour tortilla instead of my personally preferred corn, but everything balanced very well. I especially liked the way they toasted the tortilla. No ingredients overpowered each other and blended very well, and that's without any extra salsa applied. I was tempted to ask them if they had any hot salsa, but I ended up not asking. Figured I wanted to taste the tacos as they were first time around to get the sense of what they were, and I gotta say, they didn't disappoint. Of course, I like a bit of kick on my tacos usually, so I'll be asking next time.
The ultimate test was of course, my 12 year-old daughter, who has a very particular palate. In my household, nothing is acceptable until we get a stamp of approval from her. If she's able to finish a full serving of something, that's a good indicator the food came out great. So kudos to both my coworker for recommending them, and also to Lyle's for making it past my daughter. We'll be following their trucks for an occasional taco truck night.
If you're looking for a traditional Mexican street taco with out-of-this-world al pastor with fresh cilantro and onions, plus some "get those firehose ready" hot salsa, Lyle's might not be the one. But really, who expects that from NorthWest Ohio? If you're in the mood for generally good tasting tacos, then I would definitely recommend you try Lyle's. I know I'll be back. read more
