I'm going to start this one by stating I've spent probably the last 16 years working and living in Texas and on the west coast for work contracts so I am a bit biased when it comes to Mexican food here in Ohio. My man has been talking about this place forever and raved about the tacos. So now that they got on GrubHub I can get delivery because they have some very odd hours. We ordered a breakfast taco with chorizo and egg chips and quesabirria tacos and the man was extra hungry so he even added in a couple hot dogs with fries. Now at this point it was almost closing time and I always tell him do not order food when it's near closing but he wanted it so we got it. So we didn't get any queso with the chips which is a little bit of a big deal for me because I don't particularly like salsa so if I get chips I get queso so since I didn't get any queso the chips are still sitting on the counter 3 days later. The breakfast taco was okay. Way too much cilantro in there. He ate his quesabirria tacos and he seemed to be mostly pleased. The hot dog completely sucked. Just no flavor and we threw the second away. Fries needed salt added. But.. I would have never ordered it from here myself personally but I tried it because hey it's here. It really didn't taste very good and there's no option to take off like onions or anything if you order online. Something for lowrider to think about for their online orders. Not everybody wants onion and relish on their hot dog. I'm impressed with the place because I know they do a lot for the homeless community but as for the food it's just average to me I've had way better in Texas and out west. read more

I was here again and dined inside this time with a friend and colleague. The ambiance is very casual and somewhat quirky in a good way. I have to say, however, that their booths need replacing because the springs bulging up under the seat make it less than comfortable. I nevertheless had an extremely enjoyable lunch with my friend. We both ordered the taco chicken bowl along with an order of guacamole and chips. We both enjoyed our meals and raved about the fresh guacamole! I am a terrible person. It's taken me WAY too long to visit Lowrider, and I blame no one but myself. Everyone is unbelievably friendly, and as a first-timer, I immediately felt at ease. And the food? It is outrageously perfect. The menu covers a lot of ground, and the variety of options for something as simple as a taco begs you to come back again and again. Of course, the delicious flavors and fresh ingredients don't hurt. While parking isn't super apparent, there is almost always a spot or two right in front, and there is also easy street parking and parking lots within a block. That is to say, don't let its slightly odd and easy-to-miss location scare you off. Add it to your to-do list for lunch options if you work downtown, and if aren't often in the area, I 100% suggest going out of your way to check Lowrider out. And if you ever go to the Downtown Library, you HAVE to add a stop to LC. Simple, authentic, delicious, and super friendly. The inside could use some work but at the end of the day you're there for the food. They have a cute program called love tokens. Walked in and was greeted right away, and told it may be a minute due to crowd (end of lunch), no problem. Plenty of comfortable sofas to chill while u wait. Once seated, service was spot on and friendly, our waitress was awesome & made my 1/2 cut sweet tea perfect. Ok before I begin, I want to preface that I have enjoyed excellent Mexican food from LA to Boston and just about everywhere in between, including Tijuana Mexico (best street tacos anywhere?). So I am no expert but I know what good Mexican is all about and that includes Tex-Mex, whatever the heck that means. There is one thing that burns my tamales and that is a bad lunch that I had to pay for, especially one that was to be the highlight of the day. Even worse is when you get burned on something that should be as simple to make as warm oatmeal and that's street tacos and enchiladas. That is what the wife and I ordered at Lowrider, street tacos al pastor and chicken enchiladas. I'll start with what we started with, chips and salsa which was an additional $3 which also boils my grits as most Mexican restaurants offer them complementary and those that try to charge for them soon learn you shouldn't. The chips were homemade and as a famous local restaurateur put it "homemade doesn't mean it's good" and in this case, I couldn't agree with that axiom any more. Somewhat over cooked (dark brown and falling apart when dippin' in the salsa) flour tortillas, not corn. The salsa that was ordered "hot" was orange and not hot and didn't taste like any salsa I've ever had anywhere. Then the meals arrived. To place this all in context, we arrived half hour before close. My so-called "street tacos" al Pastor were horrible. The only reason I finished my meal was that I was starving but I struggled to get through the last one or four. I don't know what they consider Pastor meat but that ain't what I got. The closest thing that could have possibly resembled what they put on my one (not two as they usually are served) corn tortilla (which was soaking and falling apart thus staining my fingers and nails) was birria meat stew in a sauce or aus jus. It was so sweet with sugar, I felt I was eating a melted snickers bar, no kidding. The four tacos were literally smothered in cilantro (actually, it may have just been parsley but I couldn't tell because the taco meat sauce was so overpowering). In fact, there was so much parsley (maybe cilantro) on each taco, it covered up the miniscule lime slices and my first bite into a taco resulted in a surprise lime wedge in my mouth! Disgusting. I can only speculate that as we were literally the last customers of the day and they were in the process of cleaning up (they actually shut the lights off on us in the dining room and were stacking chairs on tables as we were eating), they just threw whatever slop they had left over on my tacos and figured a gringo wouldn't know any better as apparently the 60 or so people that have reviewed this place and given it 4.8 stars didn't. The chicken enchiladas had no flavor, none, zip. Epic fail but at least not as over-sweetened as the Sloppy Jose taco meat. The decor is in the style of the post modern, semi-hispanic, rando car enthusiast, basement man-cave. There is an art deco style black naugahyde leather sofa on the wall taking up valuable dining area floor space for apparently no reason other than that was probably taken from the same basement man-cave that the artwork and paraphernalia came from (taco lounge). There are bars on the front door and judging by the pan-handling locals buzzing about on the street in front of the joint, rightfully in place. The seats are also art deco fifties style steam bent plywood matching the sofa decor theme. Quite uncomfortable. The sparse arrangements included tables that were stark and utilitarian and a bit wobbly. Overall, not an inviting atmosphere (no music either), not even interesting other unless you like strange. So we were in Toledo for the day on business and thought we'd try this highly rated (4.8 at the time of this writing) Mexican place and were so disappointed that it left a bad taste in our mouths (literally and figuratively) and our drive back home to Detroit where we enjoy authentic Mexican fare from excellent restaurants such as El Ray and Los Tortugas, among others in the Mexican district in Detroit (possibly the best Mexican food east of the Mississippi) was somewhat downbeat and filled with conversation on how #1: Good reviews with low review counts are a red flag, #2: most people have no idea what good food is and #3: why many restaurants can't get even the basics right even though their investments in time and capital would dictate otherwise. To top it all off, $29 for four street tacos, two enchiladas and two drinks is nuts ($20 tops!), especially when the food sucks and the service seemed uncaring as if we were imposing on them. Maybe since we are used to such great Mexican food in Detroit that we are a bit over-judgemental but I cannot recommend this place at all, even to someone I don't like unless they are the type that enjoys over-priced burritos stuffed with lettuce, rice and beans as to look overly large. read more

An amazing dining experience sitting at the counter last week witnessing the cohesiveness of the staff and genuineness of owner. The vegan options are many!! The vegan nachos were very good. My wife's Vegan Mean Green burrito was definitely enough for two and phenomenal. The cook Modesty along with her mother and rest of the team offered some personal discussions about our families such as music. Moreover their willingness to ask for information about our son's band name SØNØS and Instagram handle iamsonos showed that they display a passionate interest in the customer. The only negative thing I have to say is I regret not posting this while everyones names were fresh in my mind. Stopped in after a trip to the zoo. Food and service was very good. Decor was fine, the theme doesn't do anything for me, but it's a lunch place, so who cares? I got the breakfast burrito, which was much larger than I expected, and three crunchy tacos. All were very tasty and I had to take half the burrito to go.
