I've been living in this building for about four to five years now, and if there's one person who has consistently stood out in that time, it's Chunga, our maintenance technician. With the amount of staff turnover we've had recently, it feels like the sense of community has started to slip away, but Chunga continues to be a constant presence, always stepping up, always showing up, and genuinely caring about the people who live here. Chunga isn't just someone who handles maintenance requests although he does that extremely well and often all on his own he's someone who truly keeps the building running smoothly. It's clear that he's stretched thin, especially when it seems like he's the only one regularly visible and handling work that probably should be shared by a larger team. Still, he takes everything in stride and finds a way to be kind and helpful no matter how busy he is. There was a day when the mail was mistakenly delivered to the wrong place, and instead of leaving it at that, Chunga personally called all of us to let us know our packages were downstairs because a neighbor had brought everything over. That might sound like a small thing, but the fact that he took time out of his already packed schedule to make sure none of us missed our deliveries really says a lot about the kind of person he is. Even when he's not officially working, he still checks in. One evening I was walking through the building and he stopped to ask me if I was okay and how I was doing. That kind of presence and care is something you just don't find everywhere, and it's a big part of why this building still feels like home to me. Honestly, without Chunga here, I don't know if I would still feel the same about living in this community. Over the years we've had some really great staff members. Tyra is still here, and she works incredibly hard to keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes, although we don't get to interact with her as much because she's in the office managing things. Staff like Molly, Paul, Heidi and Amber always brought warmth and took the time to build real relationships with residents. Amber has moved on to manage larger buildings now, and while I'm happy for her, she's definitely missed here. Diego was another familiar face always helpful, incredibly fashionable, and easy to talk to without ever seeming fake. Mo, who used to be the maintenance supervisor, and Jose were also both hardworking and kind, and they helped create a really welcoming environment. But now, it feels like most of those great people have moved on, and Chunga is the one who's left holding everything together. He's doing so much more than what's in his job description, and it's clear to anyone who lives here that without him, things just wouldn't run as well as they do. I truly hope that the management recognizes just how valuable Chunga is not only as a worker but as someone who brings real heart and community to this building. He deserves a raise, he deserves more support, and he deserves recognition for the amount of work and care he puts in every day. We've had great people here, and I just hope we can hold onto the one who's still here making a difference. read more

I just moved in and I wanted to leave a review because the team here has genuinely made me feel welcomed and well taken care of from day one. Huge shout-out to the maintenance team, Changa and Esdras, and to David at the front desk. Every time I had an issue, I started by coming down to speak with David, and he promptly called Changa and Esdras to help. The three of them have been consistently friendly, responsive, and genuinely caring, always with a smile and a "no problem" attitude that's honestly rare. On move-in day, Changa stayed past his time to leave just to make sure my key was working and I was fully set up. My freezer had been cracked open while the unit was vacant and ended up frozen shut. Esdras was worried about my food going bad, so while the freezer defrosted he brought me an entirely new fridge to hold my food. Once my fridge was fixed and swapped back, everything was handled smoothly. After that, Changa noticed my floors and offered to have them polished. He even gave me his number and told me to text whenever I'm ready and he'll get all the floors polished. That level of care and initiative is incredible. I also made a pretty dumb mistake and accidentally threw a trash bag down the chute that had clothes in it. Esdras and Changa helped track it down in the massive dumpster and recover it. Seriously above and beyond. As for the apartment itself, I'm really happy so far. The walls and ceilings feel very thick. I haven't heard a single noise from outside my unit. I love my layout: huge closets and a U-shaped kitchen countertop that's super functional. The common spaces also seem really well cared for and maintained. Overall, I'm off to a great start here, and it's largely because of how helpful, responsive, and genuinely kind David, Changa, and Esdras have been. Every interaction I have had has been professional and courteous and my questions, concerns and maintenance requests have been thoroughly addressed in a timely manner. The team at Lydian is doing an amazing job at keeping this place running smoothly and safely. The Lydian staff seems to makes every effort keep the residents informed, and up-to-date, of any changes, concerns and issues and does everything within their power to ensure that what they can do to make life here as comfortable, safe and enjoyable as possible, gets done. Operating a building of this size is no mean feat. It takes a special kind of person (with patience, empathy, professionalism, congeniality and the critical thinking necessary for when the situation demands it) to do this kind of work and do it well. Do not bother cleaning at all (literally at all) when moving out, because they will charge you full cleaning anyway. Even after moving out (2weeks already passed in my case), they will still find something to add to your final bill even if they have to cancel the check and resend it lol. Update: we had a meeting with the building manager regarding our stolen bikes. She said we were one of the first people who reported this despite so many other locks were cut. She was also aware of thieves. We advised that perhaps she should send a mass email to tenants to notify of the happenings. We did not agree with her response of not wanting to scare or let the thieves know (who may or may not be living in our complex) that they are aware of packages/bikes are being stolen. This is a "luxury" complex, yet they don't provide their tenants a safe environment nor warnings of incidental reports, thieves, etc. however they do send communication regarding pets, smoking policy and their events. We decided to renew our lease and to move into 2bd/2ba though. Our decision to stay was based on location and monthly dues. Stay away from this building. We can't sleep in our primary bedroom whenever it rains. When they built the building, they decided to put in cheap downspouts that protrude out a few inches from the roof in order to supposedly discharge the water down 8 floors to the ground instead of proper gutters with downspouts that go alongside the entire wall. The downspout is unfortunately located above our primary bedroom window on the 7th floor. Instead of the discharged water going down to the ground, it ends up hitting our bedroom window directly which makes it so noisy we can't sleep whenever it rains at night, even with earplugs. The worst part is lack of any action on management's part. We filed maintenance requests and first started sending emails in early December. It's been 2.5 months since then and the issue has not been resolved. There were no responses to our emails for the first 2 months and we would only get (unhelpful) updates whenever we tracked them down in person. Only starting 2 weeks ago did we start to get more traction on what actions could be taken after continue to chase them down regularly. As of today, it's still not clear what solutions are possible. We weren't able to sleep in our bedroom for an entire month during the winter storms and then every time it has rained since then. It's unacceptable for our primary bedroom to be unlivable especially given how much we pay in rent. Do NOT move into any of the interior courtyard units here that are below a water downspout if you want to sleep in your bedroom in a unit that you pay thousands of dollars in rent for. Due to a design flaw, the downspouts for the building are above the windows of many of the units of the building. As a result, when it rains, water will hit your window, making it impossible for you to sleep. Want to hear what it sounds like? The fix from 10 days ago still hasn't solved the problem and we still cannot sleep in our primary bedroom when it rains. I strongly advise anyone considering renting at Lydian to look elsewhere. After 14 months of living here, I can say with certainty that the safety and respect of residents is not even a consideration for the management team. Any issue raised is dismissed; the staff simply ignores you and does not care to attempt to resolve safety issues let alone harassment complaints against staff. The building's security is also lacking, with broken doors and a garage that has been in disrepair for months, allowing for easy access to the building without proper secondary security measures. Do not get too excited about the amenities. You won't be able to enjoy them because they are either filled with dog poop or you'll feel unwelcome due to harassment from security guards well before the 10pm quite hours. As other reviews have stated here - Lydian checks all the boxes visually. But it isn't until you sign the lease that you see the rotten core for what it is. read more

If I could rate this place 0 stars because of poor management I totally would. Don't let the aesthetic fool you, management will literally make you feel so unheard that it would be almost impossible to enjoy your time here. So here is my experience at this place so far... 1. Doors around the building don't work. We've lived here a bit over a year and experienced first hand that out of the 5 main entrances the only semi-reliable door is the main entrance door, which takes a bit to lock behind you so any other person can get in after you. The gym door is one of those main entrances and it has never worked, photo attached to sho how they decided to "fix it". 2. An employee at Lydian called Marcus yelled at me for politely asking if they could do something about dog pee all over the building. The guy started yelling at me and looking down on me like this was some kind of fight, I had to calm him down and ask him to sit down and talk to me with respect. Shortly after my husband came down to talk about this with him and the guy was apologizing to my husband but not to me. Later that night he emailed me saying sorry for his behavior. This lack of respect is what you get here. 3. The garage door has not been working for a year now, I almost got mugged in the garage and management never followed up. Management put security outside the garage while they're "fixing it" but the truth is I always see them asleep in their car, no matter the time. 4. dog run is extremely dirty, with poop all over, and it has been very poorly managed that is impossible for you to peacefully take you dog to do their needs there, I have asked management every week for almost 5 months now if they could clean it and do something about it and their response has been "thanks for bringing this to our attention, unfortunately there's not much we can do" and they told me "the dog run is a luxury not necessity, and you're not paying for it"... we DO PAY FOR IT! It comes out of the the big fat check we give to them every month. 5. lastly, security people are extremely rude, harassing people like if they own this building. I understand they have their duties but their rudeness is beyond unacceptable. Amenities close at 10pm, but security will harass you at 8pm letting you know to leave before 10pm. A security guard yelled at me and almost threatened me because I didn't leave right at 10pm. I honestly I would recommend you finding a better place with better management, here you won't be able to peacefully enjoy this apartment complex. read more

I've been living at Lydian for 6+ months and I absolutely love it. The building, amenities, and shared spaces are luxurious, well-maintained, and always in top shape. The apartments themselves are huge, have top-of-the-line appliances and thoughtful touches. But what makes Lydian so great is the sense of community here, from the supportive, caring, and communicative staff to the friendly residents, who are all invested in making this a fun, warm, and safe place for all of us to call home. I've made so many friends since moving to Lydian and am always in awe of how much care and love the staff put into making sure we're all taken care of. We have been lucky and have not experienced any issues with maintenance or anything going wrong with our apartment, but the one time I did submit a maintenance request to management (faulty bedroom closet door) it was taken care of the same day. Lydian is the worst complex i have ever lived in and I hope the absolute worst of them and Holland Partners (their property management company). I lived there for just under a year and the elevators broke down all the time with little to no notice. The entire time i lived there the garage door was broken so they had a "security guard" watch from their car who was either asleep or just watching football on their phone. The only time i ever saw them stock towels or clean amenity rooms or fix the coffee machine was before a showing (you'll never get use those.) Oh and the hidden fees were my favorite feature. Because the dog run needed to be cleaned or there was too much trash (keep in mind the complex was half empty), we ALL were getting $150 charges added to our rent for clean up (WE DONT HAVE A DOG). This is in addition to the fees we already paid for trash and cleaning. By the main reason i beg you to stay away from Lydian is because they are shady and terrible people work there. We moved out early, paid our $18,000 lease break and then for the next 6 months called me every week to demand payment. However, i took screenshots of my payment and send them numerous emails, but they lost the payment and were quite sure that i needed to pay again. So i sent them bank statements proving the payment posted and gave them their verification number. They never stopped calling. When i threatened legal action they sent a collection agency. I sent the agency my documents and they backed off, just to be sent another agency again. So we called Lydian to have them try help us. But they weren't taking our calls so we called from my wife's number and then they picked up. But still wouldn't help us resolve the issue with Holland partners. The last agency finally helped us have Holland partners leave us alone. Lydian & Holland partners are the worst. read more

First off I do know firsthand that the so called anonymous reviews are from an ex girlfriend. Pay them no mind. She's mad because the building staff didn't appreciate her lying on me and ruining my life and the lives of her young children. They remained professional the entire time and completely supportive. The staff is like family and I enjoy bothering them to say hello and speak with them while they are working. The building has no security issues, this is the scorn of a wicked woman who is a prolific liar and con artist. I love living here and while I can say the fact they don't have a pool is a heartbreaker, everything else is above and beyond my standards which are high. I am an author and have published two books while living here and I absolutely love it. The maintenance staff is on top of everything and I empathize with them for having to maintain such a nice place while those of subpar living standards leave messes. Moe, our maintenance supervisor is my guy, so is Asha, the head of our staff, Tyra, Beth and Marcus are all integral parts of our community ready to address everyone's concerns with true empathy and support. I often sit and listen in on people complaining and offer my support to the staff as I realize how they've had to support and service an entire community during the pandemic, including the mental health issues. They've offered counseling services, free exercise programs and have adjusted their approach to our community to address the fluctuations of our society with the pandemic. With 24 years of social work experience I can honestly tell you there is nothing more they could do to ensure that we all have a premier living experience here at Lydian. Especially considering the tremendous support I've needed dealing with a woman as manic and insane as anything I've seen in my entire career or personal life. I have lived at Lydian from May 2021 - April 2022, so almost a complete year. This apartment complex is beautiful, but if you can afford to rent elsewhere, I recommend it because the general maintenance of the complex is lacking. If you can afford to pay $3200 - 3700 for a one bedroom apartment, you can live in similarly priced apartments that have better execution on the little things that make up your daily experiences. Lydian gets the pretty things right, and basic safety and maintenance very wrong. Pros: - the gym is very nice, and there are free fitness classes - the rooftop is very nice - the apartments look nice and I like the people who live here. It is easy to meet your neighbors and feel a sense of community - management has events for residents, which is very nice Cons - the entrances of the complex are frequently malfunctioning, which is both a safety concern and an inconvenience. Because the entrances of the complex are frequently broken, management will leave the front door unlocked for hours at a time, so pretty much anyone can walk straight in and there are no key fobs on the elevators so someone from the street can easily get to any unit in the complex. - the door to the parking garage is also frequently broken (4x in one Year for days at a time) meaning anyone could walk into the parking garage and break into cars. Management stationed a security person at the entrance, so this was largely fixed following some break-ins. - due to the malfunctioning doors and garages, there have been some robberies in units, of cars in the garage, and of bikes in the supposedly secure bike rooms. Some theft is inevitable of course, but the building communication and handling of these issues is questionable. Following the bike robberies, management locked the secure bike room with little notice, preventing people from getting their bikes out for several months. This seemed like a strange move particularly if you couldn't use your bike for months. - there was a shooting late in 2021 that left bullet holes in the windows of the lobby. Nobody was harmed, but the windows are not bulletproof if you were wondering - if you have a dog, you will probably not want to use the dog run due to hygiene concerns. Think an open sewage situation that is not maintained properly. - the elevators are frequently malfunctioning. This is not a serious safety concern the way that having open doors can be, but is inconvenient - if you hope to use the fancy coffee machine that was advertised as a perk, plan to keep making your own as it is almost always broken. - high turnover with apartment staff, who are obviously overworked and underpaid and explains some of the many problems. - if you do have a maintenance concern, I hope that you are handy, as you can expect to wait to get anything fixed regardless of the level of urgency involved. Our dishwasher leaked into the apartment below us when we moved in which took a week to fix and when our dryer broke, it stayed broken for two months since that's how long it took maintenance to help us. - the complex is generally quiet but you will hear the sounds from your neighbors above you - if you live in a courtyard facing unit, your neighbors have full visibility into your apartment. - if you live in some units on the 7th floor, you will hear people's footsteps on the rooftop read more

This building is struggling financially due to going online during COVID, having back rents, and high operating costs. They will try to scam you out of your security deposit and not follow local and state laws. They will not provide adequate backup explaining deposit deductions, and will retain your security deposit even if you do a pre-move out inspection. It's a scam, not worth the rental rate. I've been living at the Lydian for almost a year now, and it's been a great experience! I've had nothing but friendly and hospitable encounters with staff and front desk, and the building and amenities are usually very clean. I don't have a pet, so I can't speak on the experience as a pet owner in the building, but as someone who works from home and entertains a lot this has been the perfect spot. And it's in a great location- everything is walkable or the bus and the BART are only a few minutes walk away :) Would definitely recommend! read more

The leasing/concession paperwork was a bit rocky at first, but mostly due to my part. The leasing staff went above and beyond to assist with th hurdles/questions that I kept throwing at them. So thank you Molly , Paul and Heidi! Cons: -low water pressure in shower-- though a water/$ saver, easily swapped out the shower head- NOT a big deal -key fob issues for gym-got with leasing office & they worked on it immediately -dog pee in elevators.. pet owners, get your pets out sooner! (Cleaning staff are very responsive to cleaning the elevators!) -payment is kinda challenging online with concessions, but manageable -deep pantry(?) cabinet.. maybe add rollout shelves? Pros: -only 3 blocks from the lake/Bart! -Amenities ie- massive gym, many options for work area spaces /community space/ rooftop views are breathtaking! -thick walls! Once in a blue moon I'd hear a neighbor yelling (out of excitement), & heard foot steps in unit above me... My first month In this apartment my motorcycle was stolen there's roaches the elevators barely work the gym equipment is usually broken there's fumes that come from the garage and it is constant it will make you light headed with severe headaches it will effect you in the shower bedroom and living room depending on the layout of your apartment I tried to switch units I was given the run around I was hospitalized in the Emergency Room due to the Air Quality in my unit multiple emails were sent on my behalf the asked for a new deposit to move into the unit within the building that I actually could breathe in and then charged hidden fees at the beginning of the next month i currently still live here due to the ridiculous leasing terms they offer I will be suing this complex to say the least do not fucking move here it's a piece of shit place I wish I could give this place 0 stars read more

Lydian is a relatively new building and overall not a bad place to live in DT Oakland. Pros: - It has a nice gym, courtyard and rooftop. - Good maintenance staff that's responsive to your requests. Cons: - Watch out for the pricing. On paper, it's competitive but there's hidden fees such as tax from city of Oakland. - Make sure to give your 30 day notice to terminate lease. Otherwise, they charge you a full month's rent even if you move-out before the month is over. I paid an extra $1300 for the last 2 weeks of not living there. read more

The building is nice- well it's brand new- but it has few windows that open a crack for fresh air! For a 3 bedroom it had 3 windows you could crack and none in the master. The walls are thin and security is nil. There aren't enough parking spaces for people renting past February 2022. Dangerous neighborhood lots of cop activity at clubs down street on weekends. Good for young adults not for children who need space to run and play. Nice roof and music rooms. The front desk staff is rude - they even kept my daughter locked out of the front of the building (she's 11 and they know her. Looked right at her, shook their head, and walked past. See them acting nice to potential tenants and it's all a front . Unless you're the right color. They are also unfamiliar with California Civil Codes and tenant rights... read more

It has been a couple of months since I moved in (~5/6 months). Let's start with the negatives and end on a positive note. 1. Security. This apartment complex is a little outside downtown Oakland. It is crime ridden, and based on statistics available online, it is getting worse (total crime in 2021 happened within first 5 months in 2022). Gunshots are common weekly. (https://www.neighborhoodscout.com/ca/oakland/crime.amp) Security in this building is lacking. It is very normal to see someone perusing the inside of the building at midnight. People chilling in the stairwells or elevators that clearly don't live here (I've asked and verified). There is no security at the front desk between 6 pm and 10 am. I regularly walk around the lobby or roof between 8 pm and 10 pm and have ~never~ seen security in the past 5 months. 2. Community spaces. Community spaces seem nice at first glance. Perhaps this tricked me the most. There is a bizarre 8 am to 10 pm usage policy that is sporadically enforced. I heard dogs barking in the yard at 6:30 am (not the best way to wake up), I've had my small 10 person gathering rudely interrupted at 10:30 pm (no alcohol, just chatting quietly, sharing pictures with one another), whereas a very loud, college frat party can freely continue at 12:30 am. There are cum stains in and around the building. Fellow residents have seen them first hand on the roof furniture. Use at your own risk. 3. Parking. Literally you will not find it here. It is also ridiculously pricey (~$350, park on street overnight and lot across building in the day for ~$140). And lastly, people come and go very freely (door takes a while to close behind). Again, not secure given this is downtown Oakland. 4. Convenience. Do you use Instacart? Uber eats? Perhaps any food / convenience delivery app? You will never have anyone come to your apartment. You will have to meet them outside the building. Why? These people stand outside knocking on the door and no one is there to answer from 6 pm to 10 am. And during business hours, front desk is deliberately oblivious to these people. The phoning to the front desk is broken at the door and has been for 6 months. 5. Doors / access. Access to different parts of the building are regularly not working. There are 6-8 entrances to the building. As of now, 2 of them work. Which one works is random. You're lucky if you don't have to walk around the building. The gym door sporadically works. 6. General. The positive reviews here are right after tours or within a month of move in, or perhaps staff. It's the honeymoon period, can't blame them. The negative reviews are accurate. The usual about all properties applies to this place. Bugs, fire alarms, paper thin walls (literally punch it with a boxing glove you might break the wall...), etc. I would say avoid this place with a 10 foot pole but ymmv, and this might not affect you as much. I am of course saving my juicy review for moving out, where revenge is definitely not an option. Positive: 1. Maintenance. As much as there are problems with this apartment complex, the maintenance is very strong. Within minutes you will get a reply and someone will swing by. My son is new to the rental experience. He has had a couple of unpleasant experiences that even I gave up the idea of him ever finding a rental. The experiences came from the leasing office and the staff at the apartments. He decided to tour Lydian. It had everything he was looking for. He took a tour and phoned me shortly after claiming "I like it here! There's this guy there, Marcus, and he was so helpful and really nice!" What a relief to hear that there are people out there that are dedicated to their job and responsibilities! After my conversation with Marcus, I found him to be helpful, professional, friendly.. a nice representative of the Lydian! Three months later, he continues to go above and beyond with his assistance and kindness, smiling the entire time! Thank you so much Marcus!!! read more

I've had nothing but a great experience here. Starting with my tour, given to me by Tyra; she was excellent and I was practically sold by her kindness alone! She made my son & I feel right at home. The building is beautiful & well kept. Maintenance Is punctual & reliable. No complaints! read more

TLDR; the units themselves are nice. Management is hostile and unorganized. PROS: (1) price is competitive. (2) amenities are nice and maintained. (3) maintanence responds quickly. CONS: (1) trash chutes are almost always overfilled, leaving tenants unable to toss trash. (2) there are secret price increases with no notice. Tenants review amongst each other to figure out what is going on. (3) security is lacking. People can come in and out through the broken garage gate. Of the + 1 year I've been here, the gate has been in working condition for 1-2 weeks. (4) Rules are rigid: A. Communal areas close at 10PM (except the 24/7 gym). Anyone not out by that time exact will be berated and threatened to have cops called. B. 2 guests per unit max C. No parking available for 1 bedroom lease tenants. "Waiting list" available but no tenant has ever gotten off this waitlist for +1 year. Even when there are visible empty spots in the garage. (5) staff is 95% unresponsive. The other 5%, they are hostile, borderline threatening. (6) often missing packages or left out for anyone to take (supposed to be dropped off in secure room/bin with a code) read more

The best part of your Lydian experience will be how they treat you on your initial visit to the building. Once you sign on the dotted line it is all down hill from there. The building looks good and has decent amenities but the management is terrible! They treat you like they own the building and make up ridiculous rules! On your initial walk thru they will highlight the amenities but when you move in they treat them like they are not to be used by the residents without paying a $400 fee and don't you dare bring any guests with you or they will have security try and kick you out. The garage door has been broken for months! The key fob they give you only works part of the time and not for all the doors it's suppose to work for. The elevators are constantly out of service for weeks at a time. The doors are paper thin and you can literally hear every word of a conversation in someones apartment from the hallway. I could go on but you get the point. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere and don't let the deals they offer fool you. It's not worth it! read more

Do not rent here! Staff throws accusations at tenants accusing them of doing things they don't do. When responding to the email they never reply with accurate details, confirmation or ask questions... just threats. Our lease States we can have 2 guests at a time and they try to violate our right and their side of the agreement by sending emails telling us we have to limit our guests even more due to increase of tenants in gym or visitors. The gym is almost always empty except at specific hours of the day that are common use. This sales as a community and area to feel safe but that is not what you feel after staying here. You feel threatened, accused and unsafe. The garage door has been down for month and people can just walk in due to the security guards always sleeping on the job. Gym equipment still not fixed after multiple tenants reported the issue multiple times. Gym equipment risky and cheap. The cost of living here is not worth the services and amenities offered. They use to keep towels and Cool snacks in gym but fail to offer those anymore. It's a hassle to get packages sometimes as they are careless if it's put somewhere else other than delivery states. When asked if I can check the lost and found for items I forgot in the gym they denied and said I'll look later. Still no follow up. God complex is what I'd say the staff represents. read more
