So I wanted to wait to do this review until I got my final move out statement from the Uptown and now I can leave my final review. Let me just say that I'm really going to miss living at the Uptown. Despite being in downtown Oakland, I never felt unsafe living here. I used to walk my dog late at night and never had any real safety concerns. You may see homeless people here and there but they were all very friendly. I'm from San Francisco so I'm well aware that just because someone is homeless doesn't mean they're dangerous. I loved how secure the building is, you need a key to get into the building and a key to get to any floor in the elevator. That meant going downstairs to meet your delivery person because they don't have access to the building but I was fine with that. I parked my car in the garage for the extra $175 a month but it was worth it because I work from home and didn't want to move my car every 2 hours because of the meters. The maintenance guys are AWESOME! Pretty much any time I had a maintenance issue, they came the same day. Always very professional and helpful. I lived in the 5th floor of the 600 building so I can't speak for all 3 buildings but my building was relatively quite. Besides the occasional noise associated with First Friday, it was pretty quiet. I love living downtown near all of the bars and clubs. No need for an uber, I walked to and from the location. Yes, I walked back home at 2 am to the my apartment on several occasions, sometimes alone. I didn't exactly leave the place "squeaky clean" upon move out because I was short on time and quite frankly exhausted from moving so I anticipated them keeping a big chunk of my deposit. I just got my final move out statement and they charged me $600 and are returning the remaining $1,900. I'm totally fine with the $600 charge because I anticipated the charge being much higher. Plus the remaining $1,900 covers the rent at my new place which is a bonus! The only reason I moved from the Uptown was because I'm saving up for a house and Oakland is just too expensive for me to save up so I needed to move to a city with cheaper rent. But trust me when I say that IF I COULD afford to stay here, I ABSOLUTELY WOULD! Big thank you to the Uptown for making my Oakland living experience so wonderful. I've been a resident of the Uptown since March 2024 and my experience has been great. The staff from the front to the back are always very helpful. The pool and the gym are always a nice plus. Recently I decided to find a new apartment, but ended up staying with the Uptown. Ended up switching units and had excellent help from Marysabel and Karen. Employees at uptown refused to let me rescue a dog that was trapped in an apartment for 2 days. I had confirmation from OPD and Flack that a dog was left and my friend's apartment. I am his emergency contact on his paperwork at the complex. They told me a dog wasn't in there because they didn't hear barking. He was scared to death and had no food or water for 2 days. They are shameful. The dog and I have PTSD still this was a horrible situation they did not even apologize. read more

Do not move here. Fire alarms are constantly going off, at least on a monthly basis, and often in the middle of the night. The sound is excruciatingly loud. It's gotten to the point where neighbors choose not to evacuate the building when fire alarms go off, this is such a huge fire hazard -- I can imagine a lawsuit coming down the pike. The building refuses to take any accountability for this issue and points the finger at unhoused people who seek refuge in the stairwells, instead of focusing on the security team that is more often than not rude and useless. PEEPING TOM!! This is the 3rd time this maintenance man has came into my apt for no reason and walked in on my sister naked or getting dressed. I've talked to other tenants and they said it isn't his first time and he's been reported to the complex prior. There was no sign on my door permitting or warning me about anyone entering my apartment. I have now gotten my lawyer involved bc I've had so many issues in this complex. I can't believe we gave this awful community 4 years of our lives. We should have left after the first year. The neighborhood: Loud, unsafe and lawless. Constant partying, shooting, lots of incidents with unhoused people sneaking into the building and setting off the fire alarm past midnight. Building: Such a shame that a building with such great amenities is being run by a horrible and unprofessional management company. Building security does not have any power or the will to deal with the incidents. Common area carpets are dirty. Many dog owners leave their dogs off leash and never care to clean up after their dogs. It takes a couple of days for the management company to clean up dog waste and other trash or human waste (Which happens quite often!). We had so many break in incidents at the garage. Our daughter's bike was stolen from the bike room which requires a fob to open. Unit: Reasonable size and decent layout but very dated. Carpets are gross and old. Appliances are old and have started to fall apart. Uptown has a very nice pool and spa but often times there are loud parties where drunk obnoxious adults engage in inconsiderate behavior and a few times sex in the hot tub. The fastest action by Uptown after 4 years of living there was chasing us by a very rude debt collector on the day they sent us the bill which was seven days before our contract ended. This shows the kind of tenants the property has. Avoid this property! read more

After serval break ins to folks mail boxes you EXPECT ME to follow up. What's upsetting is that Anthony didn't even walk up to inspect what I was referring to. I'm applaud at how this was handled. DO NOT RECOMMEND FOR REASONS OF PERSONAL SAFETY AND RISK TO PROPERTY. I lived here for less than a month before a resident was robbed at gunpoint. We then get an email that patrol will be increased. But somehow I still got my tires slashed 2 weeks later by a guest of a resident. This guest was known by the Uptown as having caused disturbances in the past. Between this person being a known disturbance and the " increased patrol " after the armed robbery my tires should have been fine but the perp managed to slash all four tires of three cars right out front. The Uptown didn't provide me any assistance in the matter. It has been months and I've been given no information on the perp to file charges, no updates on their restriction to the premises, and NO compensation in any form whatsoever. Recently I had a package stolen FROM the security desk. Delivery sent a picture of the package on the security desk but somehow it was still stolen. Would not recommend to anyone. read more

Nevermind I'm changing my review. Kitchen sprung a leak on Friday, hours before I was to catch an Amtrak out of town for the weekend. Filed a maintenance request. Maintenance didn't come until Saturday, no one ever contacted me personally about the leak, I only know they came cause I got a "How did we do?" email. I get back home Monday morning and my kitchen floor is SOAKED. My kitchen rug is completely saturated with water. I had to get maintenance to come again and the maintenance person who came said there were THREE issues with my sink and dishwasher line that he had to fix. So idk what the fuck the person on Saturday did except ruin my rug AND the floor in my kitchen is now warped as hell. This better not come out of my deposit. And honestly the building should be responsible for cleaning my rug too. I've been packing to move and I am SO lucky my rug was there or else a bunch of already packed boxes in my kitchen would have been ruined. read more

I'm so tired of this place. DO NOT move here if you have pets. The fire alarm goes off seemingly once a week. I'm not sure how anyone can work from home here with the amount of times these randomly go off. DO NOT get your packages sent here as they will most likely get stolen. We've had nearly $1000 of stuff stolen even though they were in "secure" storage areas with absolutely no recourse. I dont think so. The trash door is still broke. Mailroom no fix to the man made door entrance. The manager and her assistant's are the worse racist I've spoken too by far. I got settled in my new job and am looking for a change of scenery. After doing a lot of research, I called and spoke with Natalie. From the get go, she was patient, kind and answered all of my 100 questions! I set up a tour with her and she was just as delightful in person as over the phone. It was like talking to an old friend. Had to request maintenance to come and assist with a portable AC hookup. During my 17 months here: A resident was assaulted trying to enter her apartment. A resident had a stranger let into her apartment without her consent. A dead body (!!!!) was rotting unfound for months. A drunk security guard had to be escorted off the property. Elevators inspections have not been up to date. Fire alarms malfunctioned causing not only disruption but medical injuries to people and pets (mine included). For every single one of these incidents, management was slow to respond, if at all. I have been a model resident, never late on payments and never caused problems. Despite ALL these reasons above I am still not allowed to move out without paying high fees and providing a disproportionally long 30 day notice for a month-to-month lease. I feel extremely unsafe here and am meeting aggressive resistance from management for wanting to quietly and safely leave. read more

I have been a been a tenant at The Uptown for almost 1 year and in my time I have experienced actions by management that I can only explain as predatory behavior. During my time here, I have had my car towed from the garage, which I pay to park in. The complex hired a tow company to come remove cars for the garage without sharing a list of approved cars and/or license plates, only requiring them to look for a flimsy car tag that is now taped up because it had fallen off. They sent an email the Saturday evening before they started towing on a Sunday morning, not allowing adequate time to see the message. To not give your paying tenants 24-hours notice of any major changes in the security of the building and allowing companies to come in a tow is predatory. I had to pay $600 to get my car back. Additionally, I had a package delivered to our Amazon lockers, which became "lost." I was out of town at the time, and the package had exceeded the time allowed to be in the locker. When I returned, my package had been removed and I was told by staff that it was returned to sender without giving me a tracking number or proof of return. When I reached out to UPS, they had no record of my package being returned, resulting in a loss of $500. No accountability from staff at The Uptown. My main pint of frustration with this place is that when they are hosting an event or social, there are flyers everywhere; however, when it comes to rules updates or important information, we get one notification. Since my car got towed, they started sending emails almost everyday because I'm sure I'm not the only paying tenant that got towed. So if you're looking for a place that's reactive instead of proactive, this is your place. read more

Letting everyone know The Uptown Oakland Apartments has low quality with the up-keeping and necessary Maintence. For instance, I experienced 10 documented toilet explosions that occur spontaneously. Patty, the community manager and Nina the regional manager had not once offered a hotel. Nina verbally communicated and stated that she will not reduce the rent for me, and will only prorate my rent in the days I didn't have a "working toilet." They have brought in plumbers to "fix" my toilet however the conditions are still there. There is documentation and contracts that were both signed by tenant and property management that no tenant should or will not live in uninhabitable conditions. I am living in uninhabitable conditions. The toilet explosions have not only been filled with foam (brown and black specs) but also waste (urine, feces particles, green and yellow residue, etc). It was even mentioned from a team member from Maintence (won't mention name) that they are having pluming issues. All I will say is....... -The Uptown is the worse place I've ever lived!!! -Management lack of concern about tenant issues is normal -Certain staff members are beyond rude and unprofessional (they say it starts at the top and I believe it) -I do not feeling safe inside or outside of my apartment. I had an incident where someone left a disturbing note on my car. I reported it to the PM and her attitude was she could care less. -The noise is excessive 5 out of 7 days a week - Maintenance request are made and overlooked for months. -ALL they want is your money and it's like pulling teeth when you request something that may cost them -They promised me a ceiling fan and retracted after a few months. They offered me a portable air conditioner to put in my small 1 bedroom apt. It sounded like a good gesture but my PGE would have doubled. So I said NO THANK YOU! The uptown looks good on the outside and staff is personable and kind when they are selling you an apt BUT once you sign that lease the truth comes out. Personally, I have nothing good to say about this place!!! Wait! I take that back. The one good thing I can say is the location is ideal for a commuter or a single person. Review regarding Uptown employee Anthony: My roommate and I approached Anthony initially in the Uptown office with a question about our lease and were met with a dismissive attitude. He asked us to talk in the hallway and was even hesitant to invite us into his office after we asked to sit down. We are now finding ourselves in a situation where we have been sent a welcome letter with the concession amount that we expect for our new unit and are being told by Anthony that this number will not be honored. The issue here is that we are familiar with other residents that have qualified for the concession under similar circumstances. It is concerning that a member of the Uptown leasing agency is treating potential residents in this manner and frankly makes the residency feel less comfortable as a potential home. Furthermore, I'm left wondering what his selective treatment is based on. read more

This place was horrible. As a "luxury" apartment I expected more... if I could give it 0 stars I would. I only lived here for 6months and that was still too much time there. 1. My door wasn't flushed with the ground so bugs could get in. 2. The surrounding sounds are so loud and there's always so much noise with dirt bikes circling the apartment ever weekend. Plus countless cars getting broken into, and fights and gun firing in the business lot right next to the building! 3. The staff is rude! They have so much attitude and are so unprofessional. Like probably the worst I have ever experienced. 4. The rent was stupid high for a horrible area and jumps even HIGHER if you want to renew lease. 5. Elevators are so slow and down a lot. And are so filthy! 6. Cars are still broken into inside the lot that you pay $150/month per car. 7. The staff ALWAYS lose your packages and it's such a hassle to find. 8. THE CLEANING FEES ARE SO HIGH WHEN U MOVE OUT. Regardless how clean your left it... they have a STANDARD rate for cleaning and fees... which cost me an extra $840... so if you think you're getting you're security deposit back... don't. (Plus they'll charge you for things that don't even apply to you, so ALWAYS look at your rent breakdown. I've caught this now twice.) 9. It's so stuffy in the unit and it's get really really hot in summer. 10. THE STAFF IS HORRIBLE. Seriously so rude. They get upset at you for doing their job... it's ridiculous and so annoying. Management here is absolutely horrible and honestly they should restaff EVERYONE (except the maintenance crew). Do not move here whatsoever! So many people moved out because this place actually sucks! They're probably offering 10 weeks free because everyone's moving out. Worst apartment ever lived in. read more

There is one new staff member, Aliece Alessandra, who is a breathe of fresh air with a sprinkle of exceptional professionalism. Whatever concerns, issues, problems that arise, she addresses them immediately and supervises the needed remedy until it has been satisfactorily implemented. She completely understands that Residents are her first and primary concern. Yes, one person can make a big difference in the efficacy of operations and community harmony. Am I glad that she is now the Resident Services Manager at The Uptown? Absolutely!!! read more

We lived at The Uptown for about four years. The price you pay for what you get is great and that's how they get you. However, the neighborhood and the management will make living there a daily struggle. Here's a taste of what it's like: - Security is absolutely useless, including the "security manager." No one lifts a finger to do anything helpful and you're met with constant attitude. - There were several mix ups with the garage parking where either our car was marked to be towed (along with dozens of cars in one night, due to a computer error), our reserved sign was taken down randomly, or the car was actually towed "by mistake." Not worth the $250/month price tag, but I guess better than being one of the broken windows every morning on the street. - One night, a resident was shooting fireworks inside the complex, near our windows. I called security to ask them to stop and I watched security walk over to them and say, "I don't care what you do, but I got a complaint, so I'm letting you know." - Many times resident rules were ignored completely. Like allowing loud amplified music to be played at the pool. Never just one speaker, but dueling speakers from different parties. - There's a rule for no more than 4 guests at the pool per unit. Never enforced. Residents would walk in with dozens of friends and take over the pool for whole days. When you asked security to help, you'd get a response like, "It's hot outside, what do you want them to do?" - these same residents would get drunk and actively have sex right next to you in the hot tub. - A neighbor on the 5th floor of building one likes to let his pit bull run loose on the floor, peeing and pooping wherever he likes. One night, we opened the door to let guests leave, and the pit bull ran in and attacked our dog. We called security. They never showed up. - when a homeless person gets into the building, usually making a home in the stairwell landings, that mess stays wherever it was left, for days. Even after you report it. - fire alarms are constantly going off. At least once a week. - we moved out in November, a full month before our lease was up. Paid for cleaners to come in and make the place sparkle. Turned in the keys and everything. Didn't even bother with a move out inspection. We just wanted to be done. Our lease is up on 12/23. On 12/15 they sent a debt collector after us for the final payment. Insane and such a slap in the face. There's so much more, but I doubt many will read all of this and still be interested in living there. Don't waste your money and your time. read more

I have worked with The Uptown community for about five years now. This team works so hard to ensure that the property is maintained and that they support their community with special events. The location is also fantastic for restaurants, bars, and all kinds of different events in the Oakland area. Do not fall for the trap. I dont know how their score is this high (maybe they're buying or pumping it artificially) but I assure you, the score should be MUCH lower. This place is a nightmare and I've been counting the days to leave. *Fire alarms go off in the builds CONSTANTLY. Just this past month they've gone off 3 times after midnight, and they are LOUD. I'm talking crack your eardrums, headache for an hour loud. *People do drag races across the street and on William Street, between the buildings almost every weekend, AND they have sideshows at BOTH intersections, this noise is routine nearly every weekend and lasts until after 3 AM. Dont even get me started one the squads and dirtbikes in the park across the street that sit there all night revving their engines and blasting music. *The are constantly shutting off the water for one reason or another, and rather do it in the AM or during the day when ppl are at work, they do it in the evening/night when people are home and trying to get ready for bed but cant even brush their teeth!! *This place has MAJOR security issues. Unhoused people are constantly sneaking in and setting off the fire alarms, trashing the place and smoking meth in the garage and the hallways. Ask yourself why the price is so cheap in comparison to other buildings down town.. despite everything, this place is the projects. Do not be fooled, do not make my mistake.
