    Earl Grey & Mint Chip
    Anh T.

There was a long line on a weekend evening, but it moved quickly and we were in the front in around 15 minutes. From the flavors available that week, my friend and I chose an Earl Grey and Mint Chip flavor in a small cup. The portion sizes were generous! The Earl Grey flavor was rich, and the Mint Chip flavor tasted more like a natural and true mint flavor rather than the usual artificial mint chip ice cream flavor.

The long line moved quickly, and they provided free samples to help you determine what flavor to order. The people serving the gelato weren't very friendly. They seemed focused on just keeping the line moving. The gelato itself was very creamy and not icy at all. I got the pistachio and dark chocolate flavors. Pistachio was my favorite by far. It had actual pistachios and white chocolate pieces in it, which were very delicious. They allow you to get two flavors with a size small, which is rare at other gelato places. The waffle cone was a little chewier than I expected and not that sweet. There is very minimal seating inside (a couple long benches).

This business was a pre-lunch walk by on a Friday around noon. Being Lent, I dined at the pizza place a few doors over. Afterwards, I saved room to have a sweet ending and walked in here and studied the choices in the counter cases (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=72&select=eN0kTvcgOkr6bzRxAhg-pw), (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=72&select=TgF6iJ_tJoCf3Hbd8nuxTw), as I read the size and pricing information. There were three customers ahead of me that gave me some time to choose. When it was my turn, I asked about what would pair well with a particular flavor in getting a small cup. Despite his suggestion, I went another one since I wasn't particular interested in the one he mentioned. I tried the Earl Gray with rum soaked blueberry chocolate bark and Expresso & Dulce de leche with chocolate & chocolate pearls (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=VBt9FTdar7cw0aZZtpCVIQ); the expresso one was my selection as he recommended another flavor. I enjoyed both flavors with the expresso one being the boldest flavor. The Earl Gray was on the light side with only the aftertaste being of the tea flavor. Not wanting to walk and eat besides having a bag from my unfinished lunch, I sat on a bench inside the store. A few days later, I snacked on the brownie (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=6GhXkTm4DsOur68C22FgUg) that was displayed by the counter. It's been a while since I've had one and I really enjoyed this as it had the requisite crunch from the outer shell and crust while the middle was soft and 'fudgy'. I would get this again. As I ate at the bench, a line grew to five or six customers who patiently waited outside. Thanks to Evan for the advice and for sharing a history of the company. A suggestion to the business after speaking with a friend in the food industry who tried your flavors prior to my visit and we compared notes: concentrate on the flavors that "work" or the classic flavors. Innovation is fun and interesting but I believe your audience would better appreciate the quality of your work when it is well done.

This gelato was so creamy and rich in flavor. The flavors are so unique so I can't recall the exact names but one had apple and the other was lemon ricotta I believe. The shop is small but they worked quickly. They provided samples so we could try. There is a flavor for everyone.

Gelato made from scratch! Locally sourced ingredients with unbelievably delicious flavor combinations in the North Beach. I've had gelato before. But this unique gelato is Italian grade deliciousness!!! Impersonators set down and learn a thing or two. Lush Gelato you are in a class by yourself. Much Respect!! If you're ever in the neighborhood...GET SOME!!!!!

Haven't been in a while but remembering how awesome it is here came back! Def popular with a line that moves fast. Our scooper was fast and friendly. Doesn't get much better than that. I went with the honeycomb and apple pie flavors. Omg! Decadent and Delicious! Def deserving of a line! We still wanted a cone so we asked for a cup and cone and he put the cone on top! Best of both worlds and the cone was sooooo goood! It's like freshly made and warm with perfect flavor! Try and stop me from coming back. Dare ya!

Great place for some gelato after dinner. We ordered a sampler plate with various flavors and all were so good. Not much seating inside. Clean stone. Great service.

The line was out the door and down the street so that means it's good right? Most definitely! Their homemade gelato and freshly made waffle cones are delicious! I chose lemon bar and it was the perfect mix of sweet and tart from the fresh lemon juice and zest. We also tried a mini gelato cheesecake and it was scrumptious! Only wish it was a bigger serving. The lone employee was doing her best to stay on top of making cones and serving customers. For how busy it was she definitely could have used some help. Overall highly recommend and will stop the next time we are looking for a sweet treat.

Just finished dinner at near by Chinatown and decided to walk around the area. We came across this place and actually entered through the back. There was only 2 family ahead of us so it was pretty quick. People were allowed to sample different flavors before purchasing. I tried several flavors and decided on mint and pumpkin. They were all very flavorful and creamy. The server was patient and allowed us to take our time to choose.

Came with some friends after dinner to enjoy some gelato. Got a scoop of the Creme Fraiche & Baked apple and a scoop of the Lemon Ricotta. Both were super creamy and soft. Service was quick despite the line. Small cute gelato shop that makes fresh gelatos.

Cool little spot in North Beach. Came here after dinner and it was worth it. The server was very knowledgeable about all the flavors and the gelato delivered. They make it fresh and you can taste it. This is a definite stop when you're anywhere nearby.

Creme Fraiche & Strawberry Balsamic, Brown Butter & Choc Honeycomb, Dulce de Leche, Cardamom Lemon, Lush Pistachio, & Dark Choc

Heard good things about Lush gelato so finally got to try it on a Sunday around 7pm! There was a big line but it was moving fast - took about 15 minutes before we could order. My friend and I sampled a few of the flavors and ultimately, decided to split the 6 scoop sampler with the following flavors: Dulce de Leche, Dark Chocolate, Crème Fraiche & Strawberry Balsamic, Brown Butter & Chocolate Honeycomb, Lush Pistachio, Cardamom Lemon. We both really like the Crème Fraiche & Strawberry Balsamic! Tasted like strawberry jam. The Cardamom Lemon was nice and light as well. Brown Butter & Chococolate Honeycomb was unique - I liked the honeycomb and wished there was more of it! Dark Chocolate was good but I would have liked for it to have been sweeter. The Dulce de Leche tasted a little too caramelized so was not a huge fan of this. I'm not a huge pistachio fan but my friend said it was simple and tasty. Overall, I would consider coming back to Lush Gelato for the Crème Fraiche & Strawberry Balsamic and/or to try different gelato flavors.

Everyone enjoyed the ice cream flavors the picked. Parents really liked the Durian flavor here. A small scoop was $7.25 with 1-2 scoops and a large was $10.15 with 3-4 scoops. Without a doubt, we knew we'd be getting an authentic dessert!! Dropped in at 9:30pm on a Friday night, and felt like we stumbled into a magical little corner of Valencia. The gelato here is whipped up in these futuristic spinning machines with bubble lids; they almost look like washing machines. Absolutely whimsical. The flavors are expansive and fresh; the strawberry was excellent, though the Greek yogurt was our surprising favorite. There were so many unique and intriguing flavors (from orange and cinnamon to strawberry balsamic), we'll absolutely have to stop by again. The real charm of this place comes from the story; we read about it while waiting in line and were absolutely captivated by the story of love, community, and heritage that shapes Hila. It's well worth a read, and honestly sold us on the shop (although the gelato definitely still carries its own!). The story of Hila breathing life back into an old parlor is absolutely heartwarming. I wish nothing but much success for the future of Hila.

I was urged to hold my nose and try it by someone I generally trust, because they raved about this place. The biggest offense was the misleading description on the Doordash menu, but Google's info has the same impression as well--that is, it claims to be "topped" with corn flakes. TOPPED!! Not middled, not bottomed, not everywhered. I don't particularly care for bread product in my ice cream or gelato because it just gets mushy..and boy were these corn flakes ever mushy. Its such a gross texture. I was desparate for chocolate hazelnut. Desserts given bready garnishings isn't unususal, Super Duper does it with their shakes. As a topping I figured it would be easy to shovel off...wrong. What I paid $27 for is a gigantic wad of mushy corn flakes with chocolate drizzled through the cracks and I can't for the life of me taste any hazelnut. This was disgusting. I am extremely disappointed. A pint of corn flakes costs what, $0.50? I was ripped off...enjoy the profit margin. I'm no stranger to gelato. I've been to Italy several times and not American tourist areas but hometowns of long-time Italian friends: Poggiardo, Lecce, Castro Marina & Castro Alta, Galatina, Otranto. I've made gelato there myself. I worked in a gelateria that's actually managed to stay alive in the Bay Area for 20 years, Gelateria Naia. WhileI don't go to new places with expectations of what I had somewhere else, I do appreciate a balance of value and quality. I was left feeling so far from either in my first experience with Hila's gelato that it's the first time in probably a couple years that I couldn't stop a bad purchase from ruining my night. It really came down to the price tag for delivery: $27 for a pint! And not a single spoonful worth ingesting. How do I ever give this a try again? I don't see how it's possible. I just wanted something I could eat and then tell my friend (who recommended this place enthusiastically) it was worth the money or not. I couldn't eat this. Every spoonful was a huge glob of mushy cereal.

Located directly at the corner of Union St/Buchanan St in the heart of the Marina, this wildly popular place that is owned and operated by Italians has been in operation dating back to early-2018. The hours of operation here are quite generous as they're open daily from 10:30am-9:30pm with extended hours until 10:30pm on Friday & Saturday. The interior layout is small yet big enough to showcase several items for purchase; whole & ground coffee, jams, spreads, snacks, and even pasta sauces. And if gelato isn't your thing, they also have quite a bit of Italian cookies and desserts for purchase. Finally, if you wish to enjoy your gelato before it melts, they also offer a couple of small tables & chairs inside as well as one public restroom. Now onto the gelato itself! Much of their gelato is dairy-free & vegan plant-based with some of their gelato offering the addition of sugar, water and/or milk. They offer 4 different sizes (kids, small, medium, large) in either a cup or cone. And if you're thinking outside of the box, they also have a nice variety of espresso drinks as well as fresh pastries that are baked daily. Since I wasn't too hungry (after a big dinner), I went with a kids size cone of their "Italian Crema". This was a rich, velvety texture of creamy deliciousness. And since it was considering a 'kids' size, I didn't feel too guilty enjoying this. I will say that the customer service here was top notch as the employees allowed me to sample a few gelatos prior to narrowing down my selection. The prices are also quite reasonable as they are lower than some of the other places in San Francisco as well as gelato spots I've been to in Los Angeles and New York. With a charming interior setup, prime location, and delicious gelatos, I am giving "GIO Gelati" a perfect five-star rating.
