I've been looking forward to try Koolfi Creamery for a while, and I finally had the chance to visit with my friend when we were grabbing dinner in FiDi. Nestled in an alleyway between office buildings, Koolfi was quiet - but, thankfully, still open - on a Friday evening. The shop was scooping some unique flavors that I haven't seen anywhere else: "malai" koolfi, bond ladoo, mango lassi, and Indian coffee + chicory. I sampled the "malai" koolfi and mango lassi - and loved both flavors so much that I ordered a double scoop. Our server recommended the dosa cone vs. the waffle cone, and I'm glad I tried it! My friend and I debriefed afterwards and agreed that the dosa cone had a tanginess that reminded us of injera and that it paired nicely with the sweet ice cream. The ice cream was on the pricier side - the double scoop + cone cost more than my fast-casual dinner - but the flavors and quality helped rationalize the splurge. read more

The perfect opportunity presented itself when we wanted a sweet treat after we got dinner at The Bird nearby for a Yelp Elite Experience. The creamery is located in an alley by Salesforce, so it's not exactly intuitive to locate just by looking at Google Maps, but it's also not that difficult to find if you're walking around. Once inside, we both sampled several flavors, and I settled on a split scoop of boondi ladoo & vanilla bean inside a dosa waffle cone. I think the person working the counter misheard me though because I ended up with a double scoop, so the total came out to kore than $11, which is a bit pricey even for SF. The ice cream was quite unique though, and the boondi ladoo flavor came with some crunchy bits. We ate our ice cream as we walked around the embarcadero. We went with three flavors of the prepackaged scoops, Klassic Koolfi, Tamarind sorbet, and Guava with a hint of Red Chilli. Not the easiest to spot because there's a fence and walkway leading to the door, but there's both outdoor and indoor seating, and the interior is clean. They also let you taste-test 2 flavors each, between the 2 of us we were able to try 4 fun flavors. The Guava and Chili flavor was really interesting! We ended up buying a single split scoop of the Mango Lassi and Banana Gulab Jaman in a cone. The Mango Lassi has a very accurate flavor to the real thing and we enjoyed it, but wow that banana one is so yummy! We would definitely come back for more of it. The scoops aren't the biggest, but I say the price is fair since the flavors are so unique and delicious! Came here with a friend who had wanted to try this place, and I'm really glad we did! This place serves Indian inspired ice cream with super unique and creative flavors. I got the raspberry black pepper, and was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it! The slight hint of pepper actually paired surprisingly well with the sweetness of the raspberry flavor. Ice cream is probably one of my top indulgences in life. I love it so much that last year I purchased an ice cream machine and started experimenting at home making my own. All of that being said, I was pretty excited when I saw we had an ice cream break on the agenda at our conference in San Francisco and that Koolfi Creamery would be the ice cream featured. I looked Koolfi up before tasting it and was seriously intrigued by the unique flavors they offer. Since this was a catered experience they were served up in little cups, which kind of brought me back to elementary school and those little ice cream cups with the paper pull off lids you'd get in the cafeteria. Nostalgia aside, I appreciated the smaller serving as it was the perfect amount for a little sweet treat in the afternoon. I had the Klassic "Malai" Koolfi, and it was a satisfying sweet, spicy flavor that was completely unlike any ice cream I'd ever had. I'm a big fan of cardamom and it really came through in this dessert. I remember taking my first bite and really enjoying the diversity of flavor that was happening in my mouth. Overall I really enjoyed it and loved having the chance to try something totally new. Apple Maps got a little confused since I was coming from the Salesforce Tower side, but once I followed the signs to walk around Salesforce West, I found it easily. The store was bright and welcoming, and the woman working there was super helpful by explaining the flavors and offering samples, which I really appreciated. I didn't know what the flavors were before eating based on the title, but it was a lovely mix of sweet balanced with savory, not overly sweet or salty, and very very compelling flavors. The crunch of the nuts provided a great texture contrast. Rich, but also light. Later on I looked up the ingredients: condensed milk, walnuts, pistachios, cardamom, rose water, and saffron. I tried the "Klassic Koolfi" which has sweetened condensed milk, walnuts, pistachios, cardamom, rose water, and saffron because it's unlike most ice cream I'd typically order. I thought it was really good, if not a bit rich for my liking. I even had trouble finishing the little cup because it packed a punch of flavor and cream, but your mileage may vary. I was treated to this amazing dessert at a work conference in San Fransisco recently and LOVED it! We had several flavor options to choose from, and I could hardly pick they all sounded so good. I ended up going with a mango red chili scoop and was so happy with my choice! The spice and the creaminess went so well together, I have never had anything like it! It tasted more rich than traditional ice cream, but didn't leave me with that heavy feeling that fatty foods sometimes do. Which was a weird texture since the ice cream wasn't blended in, it was just like a big cold lump in milk. South Indian Filter Coffee in Dosa Waffle Cone: Really tasty waffle cone made from Dosa batter, so a great savory contrast to the sweet ice cream! The coffee ice cream was a bit more intense than regular coffee ice cream, which I enjoyed. Just a perfect afternoon treat. Potato Playa Bun: Enjoyed the slightly spicy smooth potato filling against the fluffy bun. I could totally see how this would be a great snack on the go. So much flavor and great texture contrast. Khara Bun Butter Congress: It's like a light sandwich with lots of butter and some peanuts as filling. The onion bun is nice of fluffy. I was excited to see that what was once Susie Cakes is now an ice cream shop! My coworkers and I originally saw Koolfi when they were closed, but we were interested in the flavors and items they offered. It wasn't until this month during a coffee run my work bestie and I saw they were open. Koolfi is near Tender Greens on Fremont street. It's not hard to miss since there's signage up! Koolfi offers such an amazing spin on ice cream. Most flavors are Indian inspired, but they also do have some flavors that are German and American inspired. There were only six flavors on display, but they do rotate their flavors. If there is a flavor you love but it's currently not on display, they also offer pints of ice cream in all other flavors they produce! I believe you can only taste up to 2 flavors max, so I'd recommend choosing what you really want to try. They also let us taste them in these cool spoons they sell in shop! You can either opt for a single scoop, split single scoop, a double scoop, or choose from the other offerings they have. They even have affogatos, warm brownie sundaes, an ice cream scoop flight, and much more - even dog treats!! They also have sweet and savory pastries that looked equally delicious as well. This place is pretty small, so I'd only recommend at least 1-2 people at a time to order their items and to leave. There isn't seating inside, but there are plenty of tables outside to enjoy your treat. My coworker and I ended up getting a split single scoop, which was $6.99. You are able to choose two flavors. I ended up getting the Kadak Chai and South Indian Filter Coffee, which blew my socks off. THEY WERE BOTH SO DELICIOUS. The South Indian Coffee Filter was such a beautiful blend of coffees into 1 ice cream. You definitely tasted such a sweet and smooth coffee blend. It was absolutely a harmonious blend eating it with the Chai. I literally regretted not getting a double scoop because both flavors were SOOO GOOD without it being overly sweet. WHAT WAS NOT ON MY BINGO CARD THIS YEAR WAS HOW DELICIOUS THAT PUMPKIN PIE ICE CREAM WAS. Holy!!!!! It's like they smashed a whole pumpkin pie in there and it embodied the taste of fall. I ended up going with the klassic koolfi. It was so great with the small bits of nuts in it, and definitely had a creamy spice flavor to it. Koolfi Creamery has a small shop along the open corridor by SalesForce West Tower (opposite Tender Greens Restaurant). There are many flavors so I had a hard time deciding. Koolfi is an Indian and LGBTQ+ owned ice cream shop located in one of the Salesforce building. The owners were super friendly and consisted of a lady and her mother. They were so nice, and it was so endearing seeing the mother support her daughter and explaining the flavors and options on the menu. They have a variety of unique flavors. I had their gulab jamun sundae with a scoop of the Klassic Koolfi (Malai Kulfi) and one scoope of the jackfruit coconut flavored ice cream. The gulab jamun sundae consists of two warm, fried balls of dough drenched in a sweet syrup with one scoop of your choice of ice cream on top. This was my favorite! I have had gulab jamun before and always think it pairs well with cold ice cream on top, and I really like the Klassic Koolfi flavor, which had pistachios, walnuts, cardamom, rose water, and saffron. The jackfruit coconut flavor tasted exactly like its name. As a Viet who loves jackfruit, I really liked it, and it tasted very reminiscent and familiar to many of the cold desserts we have! You can really taste the jackfruit which has a sweet but tart taste. There is no seating inside, but there is plenty of outdoor seats.
