Years ago during one of our cross country road trips, thanks to AAA, we discovered a great bbq joint in Van Horn, TX. Their brisket was so good it left a lasting impression on my husband. A few years after that, we planned our road trip to include a stop in Van Horn...But...alas. The place, which also had a car museum, had burned to the ground. I tell this tale as a lead up to my Lum's review. This latest trip, before leaving home, I researched bbq joints off I-10 in TX. We chose Lum's because of the good reviews plus it was super easy to find once off the interstate. We arrived on a weekday for an early dinner so it wasn't crowded. Ordering food was easy. They have a menu board which makes things simple (plus we saw their menu online). The people working the counter were friendly. We both ordered the brisket plate which comes with 2 sides. I chose potato salad and green beans while my husband chose cole slaw and cucumber salad. For drinks, we got soft drinks. We each were given a cup which we filled at their soda machine. As for the brisket --- It had a nice smoke ring. It was tender and moist but...it lacked the flavoring which comes with a good rub. I don't know if what we were served was typical of their brisket or if they had days when the flavoring was noticeable. Still...it's far better than any brisket served in places where it sits under a heat lamp getting drier by the minute. The sides were all good. The potato salad was decent and looked "home made". The green beans were a surprise. The first two forkfuls were mild but the third one had kick to it. My husband really liked the cucumber salad saying the dressing was flavorful and the veggies were fresh. He thought the cole slaw was okay. Looking back on the meal, my husband says he wishes he also had ordered a German sausage as he wondered how good it might have been. Do we regret stopping here? Not at all. Literally a pit stop! On our way to San Antonio and we needed food for our hungry crowd! After looking at several places, this restaurant stood out based on reviews. A mile south of I-10, we pulled into the parking lot. The outside was welcoming and clean. Food is immediately to your left as you walk in and yes it's cafeteria style ordering. We ordered brisket, turkey, sausage, Mac & cheese, potato salad and the cucumber salad with vinegar. It was a total hit! The brisket was super moist, tender literally falling apart, the turkey was moist and flavorful as well as the sausage. The brisket had a mild beautiful smoke to it without the overpowering bark on it. Love it! All the sides were yummy too, creamy Mac & cheese, refreshing potato salad and cucumber salad. They serve their brisket both lean and moist. It's got a solid smoke flavor with almost no complaints, although I do wish it were had a bit more seasoning in the rub. I tried to eat a salad, pinto beans, and green beans but nothing too out of the ordinary. I've eaten bbq all over Texas, everything from $100 beef ribs in Dallas, to $4 brisket in Hondo Texas. This place falls near the top of the pile for its meats, but then when you add the quality of the sauces, and the pie... this is a top 10 bbq spot for me. I can't be bothered to try to come up with different words for each meat here because they are all so dang amazing it just sound repetitive. In our judgment, it belongs in the top fifty, period. $34.73 bought a terrific lunch, centered on a 3 meat platter (brisket, jalapeno cheddar sausage, ribs), 2 side (spicy spaghetti, cucumber salad) plate, with an additional 6 ounce side of pinto beans. All 3 of the meats are very, very good, with the ribs among the very few that we have eaten in Texas that would hold their own in KC or Memphis. The pinto beans are exceptional, the other two sides very good. The cold spaghetti is indeed spicy, and the cucumber salad (mercifully) not drowning in vinegar. It was a welcome alternative to coleslaw as a palate cleansing bite moving between the various meats. Later, we went back and spent another $8 for a banana pudding, which was not overly sweet, and a very light and tasty slice of coconut meringue pie. Brisket was excellent on the plate with one meat. The two sides are served with very small portions on the plate and even as a separate side. The brisket sandwich should be served on a hoagie bun. The hamburger bun is too small. The brisket sandwich had a lot of fat in comparison to the plate which had none. Stopped here for a late night dinner. Saw this spot on the way to a burger place Yelp showed, but when we showed up, no one was in the place. So glad we turned around for bbq. Even though it was late, the Bbq was still tender, juicy and full of flavor. The Mac salad was also very good. This is a big deal for me. Sides are home made. It basically fed 3 of us for under $30. I went with the ribs, brisket, pulled pork with Mac and cheese and potato salad as sides. The ribs were tender and the pulled pork moist and covered in sauce. I wound getting a 2 meat plate with lean brisket, regular sausage and sides of pinto beans and potato salad. I HAD to get a side of banana pudding (made fresh) of course!! 2 Meat Plate 9/10 - the lean brisket was tender, well seasoned and had a great bark with a good smoke ring! Was very tasty, and probably one of the best briskets I've had in a long time. The sausage was very good as well. The Sides 8/10 - the pinto beans were not too salty, but had a peculiar flavor I couldn't pin down. Good though, so that's all that matters. The potato salad has a base of both mayo and mustard, and was creamy with a great flavor profile. The Service 9/10 - the staff was very friendly and helpful.
