I've been a Longfellow member for 14 years now. Previously, I was a member at the Four Seasons in…read moreDallas, which as you can imagine, had 5 star amenities. I'm an avid tennis player, so when we moved, I was looking for a place to play for fun, but also a place who had men's teams and group drills classes. I briefly ran into Longfellow while looking at houses in Sudbury, saw their facilities were numerous and briefly met with the staff to talk about their programs. Sudbury has a lot to offer, but I won't discount the role that Longfellow played in our decision to settle in Sudbury. While Longfellow's facilities weren't quite as new and flashy as the posh Four Seasons, their staff was much more family-like and took me in. It's now my home away from home, and I'm there probably 4 days a week. Their adult tennis programs and leagues are very good. I've done many adult drills classes over the years and play on many men's and mixed doubles USTA and CMITA teams. In addition, I've taken advantage of group exercise classes, personal training, physical therapy, and swimming and tennis lessons for my kids. I also weight train several times a week. Longfellow is very family oriented, and not pretentious. It's also not intimidating to go there and work out...unlike many other gyms where you're surrounded by 20 something models on every treadmill, or guys grunting away and slamming down weights (although during Winter Break you get a little of that with the kids home from college). Yes, the facilities are older and it's a large place with many working parts. However, there's plenty of weights and machines to do what you need to do, and if you can't figure out how to use them, there's always friendly staff available. For the types of facilities and amenities people are complaining about Longfellow lacking, that's what you get if you're paying $500/month (which is what I paid 14 years ago at the Four Seasons). Longfellow is nowhere near that. Complaints about guest fees for swimming lessons? The lesson fee you pay goes to the instructor, but the guest fee goes to the club for maintaining the facilities your child is using. So are members supposed to foot the bill so your kid can take lessons? Think of it this way, as a members get a $10 discount per lesson...does that sound better? That's a very common practice at other gyms. As for court time? Well, yeah, it's tough to find something during the day, if you haven't been booked far in advance. But what is the club supposed to do? Keep one empty court available every day, all day, just in case someone calls? That's a poor business model. Yes, there are a lot of kids' practices and lessons from 2-7pm. However, the morning and early afternoon have many adult classes and adult leagues, so there are opportunities to play. And for the people complaining about the quality of the facilities, Bosse was the big, flashy, overpriced gym around and looked beautiful, but lacked any spirit. I visited several times with friends, and it seemed more like a place people liked to show off at rather than actually work out or play tennis. Let's not forget that its owner just up and closed with a lot of families' money. Longfellow has owners and staff that care, which is why so many staff are still the same for the past decade. Are you looking for a place to workout and play sports, or are you looking for a place to just lounge around? Because there are plenty of coffee shops around. So if you're looking for a place to workout with a family atmosphere, with plenty of adult and kid programs of many types, tennis, swimming, and a place to actually make friends at, then Longfellow is for you. Oh, and I hate Yelp reviews. Longfellow has had thousands of happy members/families over the years. However, people who are satisfied aren't usually going to type a review...they're too busy enjoying working out and life in general. It's the grumpy few who do, and usually ones who are bored and have an agenda. I only typed this because I'm bored at work and feel that the Yelp's review isn't an accurate representation of Longfellow. If you check Longfellow's Facebook review, you'll see a far more accurate representation. Yelp, in general just sucks for businesses because they do nothing to help businesses, unless you pay to subscribe to them. If you do, they allow you to delete negative reviews and whatnot.

I workout out 6 days a week at a place that's more of a standard boot camp style circuit workout. CrossFit takes my typical workout and bumps up the intensity 20%! Love it. I has tried various forms of exercise since having my children, but couldn't stay committed to any of them. I had heard so much about CrossFit from friends and, honestly, they were kind of annoying about their enthusiasm. But, I figured, if they couldn't shut up about it I guess it works. They certainly seemed committed, and commitment to a gym is what I needed. Although a lot of people get hooked on CrossFit immediately, I was not one of them. The barbell movements felt awkward to me (I'd never touched a bar before in my life) and, looking at the women at the gym, I wasn't convinced that I loved the results. I want to be skinny, not muscular, I thought. Maybe I'm in the wrong place. Maybe I should just go back to yoga. But I told myself I'd give it a try...give it a few months or at least a few weeks and see what happened. And then, Mel Ockerby happened. She was my first trainer after completing my elements course and I quickly realized she was one of the most inspiring, positive and supportive people I had ever met. She didn't make me feel like I was doing things wrong...she complimented me on what I was doing right and then made the most thoughtful and spot-on suggestions for how I could improve. During those early days, Mel's vivacious personality and sense of humor kept me coming back day after day. I just wanted to hang out with her and I didn't want to let her down. Over the next few months, I did keep going back -- and what happened surprised me. I started getting stronger and faster. Those barbell movements didn't feel as awkward anymore. In fact, I actually started to like them...to love them. I looked at the women around me and I now wanted to look like them so that I could lift like them. I stopped idealizing the conventional sense of skinny beauty and started wanting my body to be strong and capable instead. I became a true CrossFitter and I had Mel to thank for getting me there. Almost a year into my CrossFit journey, Mel left the box we were at to work at Reebok. When she told me she was leaving, it literally made me cry. "You changed my life!" I told her. I didn't want her to leave but I understood that she needed to go on to bigger and better things. Although I feared my commitment to CrossFit would wane without her, I surprised myself by continuing along. But I missed Mel! When I heard she was opening her own box (Daybreak), well, it was like a dream come true. I have come to realize over the past two years that Mel is THE BEST CrossFit trainer there is. The best. And it's for those same reasons that kept me going back to class day after day during those first few months. Her warm, infectious voice and the bolt of self-confidence you feel when she tells you you are doing a great job (and remembers and says your name, even if you are brand new). Her awesome cues and advice without sounding condescending or "judgey." It's all there, still...and this time, the place is her own. Check it out...even if you think this "CrossFit thing" isn't right for you. You'll get hooked on Mel...and then on the feeling of fitness, community and wellness that comes into your life when you start to train with her.

There are plenty of cardio options, classes, a spin studio, free weights, and a large selection of Hoist weight machines. It's actually the only fitness center I've been to in the area that has Hoist equipment. I'm still getting used to the machines, but so far, I like them. There's also a decent-sized stretching area and about 10 TV screens throughout the gym. I believe you can tune into the TV audio, although I haven't ventured down that path yet--I'm usually watching something on my phone or listening to music. The front desk staff is always friendly, and check-in is quick and easy. There are water fountains as well as bottled water available for purchase. The locker room is clean. While it's on the smaller side, they do have either a steam room or sauna--I'm honestly not sure which! There are a couple of showers and all the standard locker room amenities. One thing I like is that every locker has its own key attached to a stretchy wrist cord, so there's no need to bring a lock. In fact, you can't use your own. Crowds have been minimal during the summer, which has been great. I'm curious to see how busy it gets once summer ends and school is back in session. So far, Beacon Hill Athletic Club gets a 10/10 from me. Great atmosphere, solid equipment, friendly staff, and an easygoing feel. Highly recommend!

I've been a member of Beacon Hill Athletic Club (Wellesley) for three years, and the only reason I…read morecontinue to go is because it's convenient and there aren't many easy alternatives nearby. The biggest issue is that the equipment is badly outdated. Walking into the gym feels like stepping into the 1980s. The machines are old, the overall facility feels tired, and it is long overdue for a serious investment and refresh. The locker rooms are in a similar state, very dated and in clear need of renovation. To be fair, the club is clean. Extremely clean. In fact, the staff often seem more concerned with cleaning equipment than allowing members to use it. The constant wiping down and fussing over machines can feel excessive and, at times, genuinely strange. The atmosphere is also disappointing. Peter appears to have a group of favorite members and regularly has loud, bro-style conversations with them across the gym. These conversations often include inappropriate language that feels unprofessional in a fitness club setting. Another staff member, a younger guy, is consistently rude and seems to think the gym's sound system exists solely for his benefit. When he's working, members are subjected to some truly awful reggae playlists. Peter's music choices aren't much better, with a steady diet of jazz and 70s music that feels completely disconnected from what most people would expect in a modern gym. The overall impression is that the gym is run around the preferences of the staff rather than the members. Whether it's the music, the conversations, or the way the floor is managed, there seems to be very little thought given to creating an environment that is motivating and enjoyable for the people actually paying to work out there. The one saving grace is the woman who works at the front desk. She is consistently friendly, welcoming, professional, and genuinely customer-focused. She treats members with respect and clearly understands what good customer service looks like. Ironically, she also seems to have the best taste in music. Unfortunately, it's uncomfortable to watch how some of the other staff, particularly Peter, treat her. She deserves far better than the dismissive attitude she often appears to receive. For a club that charges premium membership fees, the facilities, atmosphere, and management approach simply don't measure up.

The machines are noticeably older. This includes the free weights and nautilus machines. The free weight area is VERY tight. There might be enough room for 2 people working out by the dumbbells but even then it will feel tight. Just one squat rack / bench press station while Acton and Clinton both have at least 3 stations. Dumbbells only go up to 75 lb (Acton and Clinton go up to 100 lb). Maynard only has one adjustable cable pulley machine but at least it's capable of cable flies since there's 2 sides. Problem is, they don't have a cable pulley lateral pulldown machine. The stretching area is also very small. You can drive a couple miles more into Acton to workout at a better gym. I'm glad this one isn't my home gym

This review is based on my experience with the atmosphere and does not include the great customer…read moreservice that I've received from the owners. They've actually tried to rectify issues pertaining to the loud weight spammers and teenage kids who frequent the anytime fitness in Maynard, but my ears and annoyance with some of the ppl who frequent this gym could not be dealt with given the fact that I live in suburbia and some kids find this place to be a hangout place for them sometimes during the night since it's 24/7. If they could expand and separate the weight room ( to isolate the loud dropping of weights) from the rest of the gym, in addition to not allowing adolescents to go there to hang out with their friends after hours I would consider going back. I suppose if these towns had more appropriate hang out places they wouldn't have to go to the gym to hang out, but it is what it is.
