We came by on a sunny Saturday with no expectations and left very full and happy. Our arrival was a bit early and the bartender was still setting up. She was very cheerful, let us hang around and check things out, which was a fun surprise. This place fills up fast, so getting a good look at the memorabilia was a treat. The bartender was amazing, basically running the whole place for the first hour. She had a lot of hustle and took care of everyone that came through the door. It was impressive to see and pleasant to experience. I ordered the cod sandwich special and loved it. Not sure what the secret is for those crispy tots; tasty and light and I made all gone. Smokin'Hubster ordered the crispy chicken sandwich and declared it one of the best he's eaten (and he's sampled a'plenty). We didn't linger too long, as it was getting busy as the race finished and participants came in. It was a great stop, can't wait to come back and have some more fun (and great food). read more

This was our second visit this year. I had a bacon cheeseburger with fries and my wife had cod bites with tots. Both of our meals were tasty. This is a northwoods tavern and the menu is basic bar food. But it's our go to place for a meal in Big Bay. Come for the murder, stay for the food. read more

Classic upper peninsula tavern. Friendly welcoming service and tasty food. Great crusty, flavorful and delicious pizza. Classic cheeseburger with hand cut fries. You can tell the genuinely care about what they serve. Also a bonus; they didn't fret about our screeching toddler. Which was embarrassing but they kept reassuring us not to worry. If you're looking for a good hot meal with friendly service this is a great spot. Also has some cool history of a movie being made in the tavern. Anatomy of a murder. Food: not even average. Had the half pound burger (with no bun) and hand cut fries. Burger had no flavor whatsoever, fries were very oily...probably cooked in old oil. Service: not even average. Ordered a burger with no bun, had to go over the the bar to ask for a knife. I always tip 20%. even when service is bad, but was tempted to not do so this time, because waitress never asked how it was until I was paying, and never came to see if I needed anything after serving. Ambiance: meh. DIRTY old building. Signs say the movie "Anatomy of a Murder" was filmed that, but that is a lie...no part of the movie was filmed there, even though it is the site of the murder the movie was about. If you want to see where the bar scenes were filmed, go up the road a quarter mile to the inn. The food is much better there, too. read more

Cool for the culture, the food is nothing special. That being said, it's in Big Bay, you should not expect a fine dining experience.

What a super fun bar with a great atmosphere. The locals treated us like locals. Dancing started early with the band playing good music. Not a huge craft beer selection however they what I liked. read more

Just left and had to post a review, absolutely loved this place. What a great gem in a great location. Food and service were top notch. All of the food is made from scratch and is delicious. A must try is the 1/2lb LBJ burger with homemade fries, spectacular as well as the soup, loved it all. Will be back soon to try their homemade pizza. Fantastic little north woods bar. Lots of history here. Great stop while snowmobiling, not much else to choose from. Really nice friendly owner, lots of beers on tap or in cans and super good hand packed cheeseburgers. Great way point to add while sledding big loops from L'Anse or Ishpeming. read more

This is where the murder took Place, but the movie was filmed at the Thunder Bay Inn down the street. The Lumberjack is one of my favorite places to visit when I'm in Big Bay. It's a necessary stop. Especially when there is live music. The Friday night fish fry is great, and so is the pizza. A fun place with many great memories. read more

Stopped in twice this week. Had the cheeseburger first and then the pizza. Both were excellent. He makes his own pizza dough and it shows. Service was great. This is the bar that a murder happened in 1952 and was the basis for the movie Anatomy of a Murder from 1959. Great memorable on the walls. read more

For a small local Tavern the pizza was pretty good. I can't eat Pepperoni so we had bacon instead cuz they didn't have ham. But it was pretty good. Crust was great. read more

The movie (part of it) was made in the Thunderbay Inn. The movie company built the bar portion for some of the filming. The Lumberjack was never shown in the movie. Still a great place. Been going up to lake Independence fishing for 30 years. read more
