Everyone there is super happy to be there and excited to get to work on your hair! I didn't schedule an appointment, they just happened to have the time available and I was taken care of right away! There's no pretentious atmosphere that I find most hair places have, which is a welcome change. The stylist took her time with my hair and was very attentive during the bleaching process-just a retouch on the roots-and she minded my cartilage piercing the whole time so I would experience any discomfort. Overall the excellent service and price point is unbeatable in the Cambridge area!

Sarah was more than knowledgeable when it came to giving me advice on my curly hair. I gave her full control and told her I'd trust whatever she did and that was the best decision! Sarah and everyone in the salon was so welcoming and friendly as soon as I arrived. They offered the many drinks and snack they have numerous times and were always making sure I was comfortable and had what I needed. I could not have had a better experience! I HIGHLY recommend. I will definitely be going back the next time I'm in Boston and am looking for a hair cut!!!

I'm writing this a few weeks after my haircut because the more time I've had to sit with the…read moreexperience, the more upsetting it feels. I booked a haircut understanding that it would cost around $60-$70. The appointment itself was completely standard: a wash, haircut, and then I was asked if I wanted my hair blow-dried. I said yes because I have genuinely never had a haircut where drying the hair afterward wasn't part of the service. There was nothing elaborate about it--it wasn't a special blowout or additional styling, just a normal blow-dry after the cut, which I was perfectly happy with. When I went to check out, I was told my total was $120. At no point was I told that saying yes to having my hair dried would add approximately $60 to my bill. Had I been told, I absolutely would have declined and left with wet hair. I have never encountered a basic blow-dry costing nearly as much as the haircut itself, but even if that pricing is completely standard for this salon or this area, that isn't really the issue. The issue is that the additional charge was never communicated to me before the service was performed. I had also just moved here about a week earlier. I'm a graduate student, currently unemployed, and living on an extremely tight budget. It had been more than a year since my last haircut, and I specifically sought out a salon in a price range I believed I could responsibly afford. Even spending $60-$70 on a haircut was a meaningful expense for me. After the unexpected charge and tip, I walked out having spent around $140 which was roughly double what I had gone in expecting to spend. I didn't say anything at checkout because I was honestly shocked and didn't want to react disrespectfully in the moment. My stylist herself was extremely kind, which is part of why writing this feels difficult. I genuinely enjoyed talking with her, and I want to be very clear that my frustration is not about her demeanor. It has also now been a few weeks, so I've had time to see how my hair settled after the cut. My hair has unfortunately really struggled since then. I came in with very dead, damaged ends, so I am absolutely not blaming the stylist for the condition of my hair or suggesting that the haircut caused that damage. At the same time, I also can't say that I noticed a meaningful improvement in the health or manageability of my hair after the cut. That makes the overall cost particularly difficult to swallow. What continues to bother me most is simply the lack of transparency. Businesses can set whatever pricing structure they need to, and I would have respected the price if I had been informed beforehand and given the choice. Being asked casually if I wanted my hair dried, with no indication that the answer would nearly double the price of my appointment, and then only learning the total at checkout made me feel genuinely duped. I understand that businesses are dealing with rising costs, and I don't expect inexpensive services. But I do expect to know what I am agreeing to pay for. Especially as one of my first experiences after moving to a new area, walking out of a salon having unexpectedly spent $140 on what I believed was a $60-$70 haircut left a really awful impression. A simple heads-up about the additional charge would have completely changed this experience. I welcome the opportunity for this to be made right.

After asking for a hairdresser comfortable working with long hair, I was matched with one who insulted my hair the entire appointment, repeating "I hate long hair, this sucks." I asked him to cut one portion of my right hair, tapering down, and he chopped off the entire right side of my hair, tapering up, immediately ruining the style I asked for, leaving no length to mend it. When I asked for my first correction of this already botched style, he scoffed and rolled his eyes. When I asked for the second correction, he interrupted me to call over to and ask for approval from his next client, saying, "are you a lesbian? would you date this?" even though we were both transmasc strangers. He did not ask for my approval, just reacted to his next client's shrug of a response and told me "see? who wouldn't like this cut?" He then stopped talking to me to move on to his next client and the appointment was apparently over.

NEW LOCATION, NEW NAME, SAME GREAT PEOPLE!…read more I've been getting my hair cut here since ~2001 (guy), so of course I followed them to their brand new digs. No longer called "MK Hair Studio", they are now "Studio 3" (because it used to be an event space for the restaurant next door). It is a much bigger, quite attractive salon space now. Easy to find, just look for the giant Julia Child mural on a Monolith out front on the sidewalk of Broad Canal Way, just down from Cafe Luna on the same side of the street. You may see a sidewalk sign on the corner directing you to another business, but that is a barber shop of the other side of the street (don't go there lol!). Your GPS may give the wrong location for the salon, so just remember it is on the first block of Broad Canal Way, just past where it runs into 3rd Street (again, look for Cafe Luna on the corner and then Julia Child). As far as parking, not quite as good a deal as the old OKS location (that was $5 for $35 3 hour parking), they now charge $10 for 4 hours parking which would normally cost at least $32 (I stayed less than 3, so can't confirm the time limit and they didn't seem 100% sure). Which is nice if you also want to get lunch at Shy Bird nearby (excellent fried chicken sandwiches and smash burgers). No chaser tickets now, they validate via computer at the end of your appointment The parking lot is the "350 Kendall Garage", but don't use that in your GPS. Entering 302 Kendall St, Cambridge, MA 02142 in Apple Maps gives me the actual entrance to the spacious underground garage which is behind Studio 3 on the next street over intersecting with 3rd St (so come down 3rd and turn on Kendall St and it will be on your right). You'll then have to walk a couple of blocks to get to Studio 3. There is some confusing construction, so pull a map up on your smartphone. When you enter the garage building on the way out, bypass the ground floor office and put your validated ticket into the machine next to the office and pay by credit card. ***The trick I learned is to remove your credit card very slowly, or it won't take it.***

I booked a haircut with George and for whatever reason he decided that he didn't want to cut my hair. He asked Frankie to do it. There was literally no one there. I said sure whatever. I just had a baby. All I want is a haircut and get out of there. First of all it took 2 hours instead of the 1 he quoted. He blew dry my hair and he was super rough and he burnt my scalp. I asked for bangs and he literally grabbed a chunk of my hair and cut it short: At that point I was really annoyed since I told the babysitter an hour and I was an hour late already. George had to come in a fix his shitty bangs. Finally done and I left. I was so tired that I didn't really check but when I got home I realized that it was superrrr uneven. I tie my hair up and you can visibly see how uneven it was. I had to grow my hair out to get it fixed. I had to wear it up for a few months just to hide how bad my haircut was. Went to another place yesterday and the stylist confirmed it how uneven it was. I think the worst thing was George (believe he's the owner) checked my hair to make sure it was even and he said it was!! Very disappointed in this place since I wanted this to be my go-to place.
