Delicious food and great service!…read more Since I've never been here, I wanted to place my to go order inside. I'm glad I did. This spot is really pretty inside and out. The parking lot is small, but I lucked out and found a spot right in front of the door. I was warmly directed to the side bar area to place a to go order. A very nice lady talked me through the menu and made suggestions. I went with the golden bowl and substituted shrimp. As I sat and waited for my order, I really enjoyed the music. It was loud, but perfect for the venue. The bar area looked so inviting. It was late afternoon on a weekday, but this spot was already 1/2 full. I noticed a few folks booed up on dates, as well as some friends hanging out. This spot gave me those cool back in the day vibes I'd have when picking the perfect hang out spot when I lived in NYC. My food was ready quickly. The spice and flavors were awesome. Everything was cooked to perfection and well balanced, ... and the curry --- OMGoodness! It reminded me of food my mom cooked. My only complaint was that I wanted more of those luscious stewed plantains. The next time I'm in HTown, I am definitely returning to this spot. I'll eat in, have some cocktails, and soak in all the good vibes here. The parking lot is small, but you can find some free street and metered parking in the area.

Passed by this place multiple times and finally decided to stop in for drinks and appetizers…read more The ambience grabs your attention just walking into the restaurant they have string lights along the walkway and low amber lights as you go inside. They have an outdoor eating area, a bar area, and seating in the very back. It's very spacious, comfortable, and intimate. The theme of the restaurant is seen all over from the moment you enter, to the music, the menu and the restroom. They paid close attention to detail with decorating. We had an amazing server, delicious drinks (a must try), and ok food. We ordered four drinks the painkilla, vamos à la playa, captains grog, and the Hemingway daiquiri. All were great drinks and we loved how they give you flavor characteristics of the drinks on the menu. The appetizers that we ordered were the sweet and sour cauliflower and the pork dumplings, which is why I gave this place four stars. The presentation of both appetizers were excellent. However, the pork dumplings were disappointing. They came with only six dumplings for $17, were served cold, and are very bland. In my opinion, they weren't worth the price. On the other hand, the sweet and sour cauliflower was our favorite and is definitely a must-try.

Parking is most convenient in the museum garage and the restaurant validates it. We had a reservation for Sunday night around 8 pm and it was surprisingly quiet...probably because it was a later dinner. The HRW menu was $55 for three courses. I started with the hamachi crudo which was light and fresh. It The passion fruit and peaches and I loveee a raw fish + fruit combo. It was so good! For my entree, I ordered the chicken. I rarely order chicken at restaurants, so I was a little skeptical but it did not disappoint. It was perfectly cooked, juicy, and not dry at all. It came with cashews and chili crunch on top which added the perfect texture and flavor. I loved how they elevated a simple dish. For dessert, I chose Le Fraisier, a vanilla Chantilly sponge cake and it was easily my favorite course. Not only was it delicious, but it was absolutely stunning!!! almost didn't want to eat it because it was so pretty! The service was also amazing. Our waiterRuben was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and took the time to make conversation with us. Every staff member who stopped by was equally knowledgeable about the food and the wines we ordered which is always appreciated when visiting somewhere for the first time. Overall, I was extremely impressed by the food, atmosphere, and service. It definitely lived up to its MICHELIN star status. Tens across the board!!!

I still like Roots. It's truly a unique concept and one-of-a-kind in all of Houston (self-serve…read morewine tastings). However, my recent visit was just okay. It was warm and humid inside (Texas summer is mostly to blame). That said, the handful of whites that I sampled were not very chilled. Kinda defeated the purpose of getting a refreshing chenin blanc or rose. And a lot of the tasting notes were not available above the bottles. By the time my friend made her way through the tastings, she had already spent $20+. They also charge a 20% auto-grat. Not a fan of that percentage for self-serve and counter service (you have to order food at the register). We ended up going to Mimo down the street to sit at the bar, taste complimentary samples, and then order a full glass. I'll still go back to Roots but have kinda lowered my expectations of the wine selection and value. Some of the novelty has worn off. Good news is that their food is still solid: loved the mushroom toast and ricotta toast last I tried it.
