Went by their store in Ryan Ranch today to pick up a few extravagant gifts for Valentine's day. Let me tell you, its extravagant. Please be prepared to spend upwards of $1.50 - $2 per piece. Regardless, I send these caramels to family and friends all the time... they absolutely love them. I wish I could review their products separately... I would give their Sea Salt Caramels 5 stars without any issue. They are delicious and wonderful and the best ever. They are worth their price because it is an unusual product that you don't find everywhere. The other items are good but can be found with better chocolate elsewhere. I like the chocolate just fine, no problems with that at all... just think the price is high for the quality. If you ask a few questions, you will find that they use a quality American brand, Peter's, a line used by many companies... I am a little surprised that the product is so expensive when they are this particular brand. Might be overhead, might be small batches... who knows? Go for the sea salt caramels and toffee, skip the rest and opt for better quality chocolate if you are looking for basics like turtles and assortments. read more

I stopped by for a factory tour with a group of 6 people. Wow! The tour was well worth it and much more interesting than I initially thought. The tour guide showed us the whole entire process of chocolate confection making, from the area where the fresh, natural ingredients are prepared to where they package and ship the chocolate. Lula's claims to offer fresh, hand made chocolates and I can tell you it's as authentic as it gets! They were making caramels, from scratch, when I went in. Other companies make their caramels and other products and then freeze them. As a result, the caramel and other products lose their flavor and so nasty artificial preservatives and flavors need to be added to keep them tasting OK. Lula's, on the other hand, makes their caramels from scratch with ingredients that you would use at home. Of course this great homemade process is useless unless the candies taste good and oh boy do they! The sea salt caramels (homemade caramels covered in luscious chocolate and topped with different sea salts of the world) are to die for, and I mean die in a literal sense. If I learned that I would never be able to enjoy a sea salt caramel again, I might actually die. However, it would be an easy problem to fix because you could just resurrect me with the smell and taste of their buttercreams! The factory and shops are all run by a local family in Carmel and so doing a factory tour or chocolate store visit would be a great addition to your Carmel vacation. Admittly I was excited to finally try Lula's Chocolates. My friends RAVE about them. When I walked into the place smelled devine. I purchased the sea salt caramels and a chocolate marshmellow sun. The other chocolates they offer didn't jump at me to buy, so I didn't. When I got to my car I was open the caramels right away, took a bite, and was not swooning like I thought I would be. My mother makes the best caramels, I mean, we look forward to Christmas... for the sole reason it is caramel season that time of year. These caramels tasted a bit like the wrapper and had a funny after taste. The chocolate sun... was okay, as in, Russel Stover okay. All in all, their chocolate is nothing compared to See's, and their caramels are nothing compared to my mom's. Not bad, not good. read more

I haven't tried any of their chocolates, just their caramel. But I think I'm in love! The caramel comes in chunks about 1" long, about the size of my thumb. I found them at my local Whole Foods and the first thing I did was squeeze them to test their softness (I'm a sucker for soft caramels, what can I say?). Passing that test, I brought them home, popped one in my mouth and almost passed out from joy. They had that great burnt sugar taste and were sticky enough that they clung a little to your teeth but not so much that you thought they were going to pull something out with them. They leave a pleasant aftertaste and your mouth doesn't feel like you need to glass of water to clean out all the sugar. Just amazing. My first reaction was to immediately write the owners of Lula's to make sure that they'd continue stocking them at Whole Foods, or if I'd have to run out and buy up their entire stock. I should have followed my instincts because just a day later, they were gone!! Luckily, the Lula's guys assured me that they could be found in Palo Alto after all. And now my friends can taste these caramels too - without the assurance of future stock, I wasn't about to let these slip away. Without going to the store (or trying the chocolate), I can't comment on anything else. But these guys were courteous and nice and answered my questions promptly. They were even nice about the fact that, persistent in my attempts to find more, I called them up shortly after emailing them. And the caramels are so good, I would definitely be willing to try their other confections if I happen to run across them. read more

My friend first introduced me to Lula's last year with a Christmas gift of their peppermint bark. From that first bite, I was hooked. Sure, it wasn't as good as Williams-Sonoma's peppermint bark (still the best in my book), but it was mighty tasty. I've similarly been impressed with the other candies I've had from Lula's, including chocolates, chocolate-espresso truffles and, most recently, caramels. Wow, those caramels really do stand out in my mind as excellent--they're so soft and buttery! I could easily finish off an entire package in one seating if I'm not careful. Even their chocolates were pretty tasty--and I'm not really a fan of chocolate candies. From what I've heard, their candies are a bit pricey, but they are mighty tasty and worth every penny if you ask me. (Plus, the higher price helps on exercise restraint, no?) I haven't been out to Lula's shop--I'm afraid if I do I might come back with bags and bags of delicious candy, like a kid on Halloween--but I've recently been tempted to go and pick up some candies for gift. And I swear, they're gifts for friends. OK . . . I'll come clean, maybe a few candy "gifts" for myself too. read more

We made our annual trip to Spin Drift Inn and topped off with Lula's 45 piece pick our own box. We where celebrating my wife's early Birthday week. Every time we go to Lula's we are greeted with smiles and Kindness Today is January 2nd 2018 and the pleasant young man to help us was Cooper. Cooper is definitely and people person with a positive attitude. I tried tipping him but he said he couldn't accept the tip. He then shook my hand and said thanks again for the offer. Crazy overpriced. The use Peter's (Nestlé's industrial line) chocolate for god sake! For those who don't know, Peter's is industrial swill chocolate, typically retails for around $3 a pound or less than 1/10th the price of Valrhona, Amedei, Cluizel, or Pralus yet they charge the same as for products made with these chocolates. I don't even think I could find a lower end chocolate than Peter's, so god knows what quality of nuts and dairy they use. They'd be fine as drug store chocolate, along side Whitman's, but the fact that they've hoodwinked people into paying top quality, artisinal prices is just sickening... but what else would one expect from a chocolate company founded by MBAs? As an added bonus, they just came in last place in every catagory they entered in the Seattle Chocolate Salon. Two stars because I didn't get sick. read more

There are so many places to buy chocolates from. Most of the places present well online, and most never deliver on the quality of the product. It is very hard to know the good from the bad without tasting the product. We recently, had some very special guests come to our house and they brought us a box of the 9 piece Sea Salt Caramels. One bite into these babies and they just ooze quality. Rich dark chocolate on the outside, chewy caramel center, and delectable little crunchy different salt crystals sprinkled on top. I mean QUALITY!!. My wife and I fought over every bite. After we finished these, I decided to go online and order more. This time I ordered an 18 piece container of the Sea Salt Caramels, 9 oz. Dark Chocolate Almond Toffee, and the dark chocolate pecan truffles. They arrived today from FedEx in a foiled insulted box. They even double wrapped the ice pack inside a Ziplock followed by freezer paper. What a beautiful presentation of a quality product. So far we just tasted the Dark Chocolate Almond Toffee, which was out of this world. Everything Lula's makes tastes homemade. It is worth every penny! Had a package of their Dark Aloha Rocky Road chocolate that I got at the Monterey Rock & Chocolate Festival. Even after it had partially melted and re-solidified it was incredibly delicious--quality dark chocolate, toastd macadamia nuts, marshmallows...I also sampled one of their sea salt chocolate-covered caramels. I'm not a huge fan of caramel or salted chocolate (yes--I'm the one person in America who doesn't like this combo), but it wasn't bad. read more

We ordered 3 different types of the sea salt carmel chocolates for our wedding in September and they were the hit of the party, or at least the hit of the dessert buffet! These are the best chocolates I have ever tasted in my life just surpassing the chocolate made by the monks in Monserrat in Spain. I had never heard of them so I figured they were specialty items brought from belgium or some other country that's known for good chocolate. I actually wanted to put in a review for the Lula's Rocky Road that is sold locally at the (Fremont, CA) Whole Foods. It is AMAZING! every bite is a piece of heaven, the milk chocolate is delectable, the macadamia nuts: so fresh, and marshmallows soft and airy. I am planning to buy a bulk load of these candies to send out as Christmas gifts. I haven't tasted a candy so good! High-end quality chocolate AND delicious! read more

I was given a box of Lula's chocolate truffles as a gift and was very disappointed. The truffles tasted stale and old and the texture was very dry. The overall taste was extremely sweet and lacked the chocolate I expected. I much prefer See's over this product, both in taste and freshness. read more

I just have to say these are the best sea salt caramels ever. Last year I bought some at the factory for Mother's Day. Normally, I buy them at the store. The owner Scott Lund packaged the chocolate and we chatted about kids (I was seven months pregnant at the time). He is a nice guy. If you haven't had their chocolate, you should. They are made fresh. We've shipped these to our home in Texas, and bought them on-site in Monterey plus from the San Jose Airport bookstore. We had a little trouble finding the location on the Monterey location because it's in an office complex are; found out later there was another location right in Monterey near the water & Aquarium! Wonderful chocolates; friendly service. I particularly recommend the caramels with different salts; the caramels without chocolate, all flavors, esp. peppermint; and the Aloha Rocky Road candy with macadamia nuts. Amazing chocolate! On the pricey side, but very high quality!

Great chocolates, very smooth and flavorful. Their toffee is the best by far though. Almost like it's made out of pure butter. I'm not sure what was wrong with the one reviewer "Catch X" though, although I see he's a bit disturbed and hard to please from other reviews anyway. I went online to check out the Seattle Chocolate Salon's website and they listed all the participants and the results. Out of alot of chocolatiers in the nation and I believe internationally whom competed, Lula's got honorable mentions in a few categories. So yeah I guess that could mean last place, but they did place. Most chocolate companies didn't even place. And I'm not sure why having an MBA would make a bad chocolatier. Oh well. Great chocolates anyway. read more

Wow!!!! We called ahead and booked a "by reservations only tour of the chocolate factory, and were so pleased that they were willing to give the tour just to the two of us (it was a Tuesday). The woman giving the tour was SO great! She was also training someone. We saw photos of the original owner Lula, whose 100 year old recipes are still used, and met her grandson who owns the shop. We enjoyed seeing where they temper the chocolate, watched two guys rolling out homemade marshmallow, saw the enrobing machine, watched the ladies make macadamia nut turtles for Tommy Bahamas, and visited the room where everything is packaged with lovely boxes and bows. Along the way...as we enjoyed the very fun and informative tour...we were able to sample a few things that they had available that day. The samples were all SO delicious! We had a yummy caramel with nuts inside, a full sized rich pinot noir truffle, and a delicious chocolate enrobed caramel. You can also sample the salted caramels at their other stores in town...divine. The samples were all amazing!!! And so fresh. Just perfect! And you get a 10% discount for taking the tour! We loved our customized box of truffles; our personal favorites were the dark chocolate truffles filled with dark chocolate ganache, mint, cinnamon, coffee, and wine. I personally don't like milk chocolate or penuche as much, and didn't care for the vanilla or chili powder truffles, but it's obviously just down to personal taste. We also got the chili flavored toffee, which wasn't my favorite, but chili powdered desserts are always a gamble for me. Anyway, this is some very high quality chocolate made with care!
