The woman working explained the ingredients and history behind the business, while guiding us through each section of the cozy, thoughtfully laid out shop. Gluten-free and nut free friendly (cross contamination possible, I had no issues of being allergy sick from the basic chocolate caramels). IMHO Lula's is a cute chocolate store in Carmel-by-the-sea. My friends never bypass a chocolate store if they can help it. Yes, of course they walked out with chocolates to enjoy! Lula's was whimsically decorated for Christmas! Customer service was very friendly and helpful. She offered us the chocolate-sample-of-the-day! So grateful to my hotel for gifting us a bag of their salty caramels. I prefer no salt but I'm hooked on the BUTTERY taste! We've seen Lula's sold at specialty stores like the Pebble Beach Visitor Center but here there is more variety and cheaper prices. Handmade in Monterey in small batches, you can see and taste the fine quality. The store looks like a charming, nautical-inspired gift shop. I bought a Dark Chocolate Rocky Road bar with Macadamia Nuts, Caramel Toffee, a bag of Salted Caramels and a variety pack of Caramel sticks. I think my favorite is the Rocky Road, the chocolate alone! The Toffee was 10% off for being past the freshness date but that's in another month! The employee was friendly, courteous and justifiably proud of the chocolates. I was at the Crossroads for an Elite Yelp Event and walked by a chocolate store days before Valentine's day. Say what?!! Had to come in and take a look at what they were offering. Sometimes these speciality chocolate shops can be not worth it. This store IS WORTH IT! Loads of yummy chocolate choices for yourself or someone special. They had a variety of boxes and chocolate products to choose from. From sea salt carmels to dark and milk chocolate. Big boxes, little boxes, chocolate flowers, single pieces of candy, etc. All priced within any type of budget. I purchased two small 4 piece boxes as gifts. SO GLAD I bought one for myself- they are creamy, chewy, dark chocolate heaven with a sprinkle of savory flavored salts. (I like the chili salt the best) but have since been a loyal patron- they are my supplier of "Monterey treats" for all guests that come to visit or that I go to visit- and within the last few months I found the dark chocolate aloha bar with macadamia nuts and homemade soft marshmallow -has become a new special treat. I always make a point of stopping at Lula's when we are in Carmel. Lula's Crossroads store is much smaller than the one on Mission so perhaps there are fewer choices. For the different holidays, Lula's always has some special items. The very large solid milk or dark chocolate turkeys seemed like a bargain at $35. Could be part of a fabulous centerpiece. There's this really wonderful lady that works at Lula's, a chocolate shop located on Mission Street in Carmel. She was nice and helpful. When we first walked in, she gave us samples of the toffee and milk chocolate which was extremely tasty. She pointed out that the sea salt caramels are what they are known for. I asked her if I could take some photographs as I was a foodie and she was quite pleased to find this out and gave me a Lula's business card and told me that if I was ever to come back, to call ahead and I can get a tour of where they make the chocolates. Lula's is produced locally with local ingredients. They make only small batches and they don't even make it out to Los Angeles. Mmm...chocolate tour, if only I could make my way back to Carmel. Hey I can dream! They had boxes of chocolates and truffles in different sizes. I elected to go for 2 packages of their Aloha Rocky Road for $5.95 each. One was milk and the other was dark chocolate and a 4 piece box of dark chocolates for $9.50. Prices are comparable to other fine chocolates. The chocolates were seated in a neat little box and colored bow. The bows came in different colors, so it was just a buyer's choice. My sis shared a piece of dark chocolate with me, and she would have given me a whole piece but at the time I didn't feel like indulging so a half it was. It turns out half was enough because the chocolate was extremely rich, decadent, silky, smooth and had the right amount of sweetness. Not overly sweet like some chocolates tend to be. It was so smooth on tongue and had such a nice mouth feel, that I kept rubbing my tongue trying to absorb all the chocolate essence. Oh hurt me! All I could think of was, how could I have not gotten any for myself??? OMG! I didn't even get some rocky road for myself and Lula's Aloha Rocky Road s is made with macadamia nuts. I must have suffered a brain fart that only a piece of fine chocolate can jolt my sense and wake me back up. If you ever visit Carmel, stop by this lovely little shop to get some really fine chocolates. Your tongue won't lie. read more

We were in the area, so we decided to drop by. We were hoping to go on a factory tour, but this is just a retail location. The tours run Monday-Friday and are at a different location. You have to call ahead of time to schedule it. The store itself is really tiny with cute boutique decor. It was staffed by one friendly middle aged woman. She offered us a few samples. The chocolate was just so-so...but keep in mind we've had truly awesome chocolates before. Their truffles seemed a bit bulky & the flavors just had one note. Prices weren't that cheap either. You can't buy them individually. They're all in pre-wrapped assortments. I believe the smallest one had 4 pieces. The caramels were pretty good. They were topped with an interesting selection of fancy salts. I noticed their ingredient list for the chocolate contained a lot of artificial stuff. Yikes! The best item there was their specialty - freshly made marshmallow and macadamia nuts, covered with chocolate. I bought one to take home and it was about $6. The flavor combo seems to work. Would be better with a higher grade of chocolate. Overall, not worth a special trip to see if you're a chocolate snob. read more

After stopping by the Lula's chocolate factory for a tour, I felt compelled to visit their store in the Crossroads at Carmel. All the great chocolate I had at the factory was available at the store. The inside is tactfully decorated and as clean as can be. The salesperson will help you decide on a gift for someone if needed, but I of course just went to buy the chocolates for myself! The sea salt caramels are to die for. All of the candies (caramels, marshmellows, toffee, etc.) are made from scratch with regular ingredients you would find in your home (say NO to preservatives found in See's candies.. Yuck!!). I moved to Monterey two years and stumbled upon Lula's soon thereafter. Since then, the sea salt caramels (which are a misnomer because their name doesn't explain the chocolaty goodness that surrounds each piece) have been my go-to gift for out-of-towners. In fact, my friends and family in Memphis often place their orders with me before I make trips to visit. This location in the Crossroads Shopping Center is my favorite, and the woman who works there on the weekends has come to know me fairly well. Each time I go in there (which is about every two or three months), she remembers me and we catch up. I love this place and its products and packaging so much. Good quality caramel, toffee and traditional american chocolates. This is a good place for nice and comforting confections, like their sea salt chocolate covered caramels, which spread their buttery flavor as they melt in your mouth, but just taste the Baja Toffee Bark and they will prove you wrong! Fire in your belly and heaven in your mouth the Baja crunchy toffee and chocolate double decker is sprinkled with chili and peanuts. This is one item that I always buy if Im in Monterey as they don't seem to ship it out to retailers anymore. This chocolate shop is doomed because of this one middle aged saleswoman. We walked in expecting some better than average customer service since this shop is tucked away in a Safeway-anchored shopping center, no brand recognition or whatsoever and the shop itself is quite small. Instead, we get this grumpy middle aged woman/grinch who should really be working in the back where no customer interface is required. The woman gave enough samples to honestly feel like we didn't need to buy anything but felt obligated to and not just sample hoarders. Ordered some Aloha Rocky Road in dark chocolate. It's hot here - well, not too bad today, but can be. They arrived by Fed Ex in a nice little cooler with a cold pack. They were all cold and in perfect shape. This chocolate is so delicious. You really can't go wrong!
