An unusually warm winter day in the Bay Area called for a day trip to Carmel. Perusing the streets of Carmel is always a treat. Every time I visit, which is about once a year, I'm always filled with excitement as if it's the first time. I love visiting new places and after visiting a toy store, walking back to the car took me to Lulu's Chocolates, and oh so glad I stumbled upon it. COVID guidance was in place and there's a sign before you enter the quaint chocolatier. I believe they only allowed one person at the time, lucky for me, I was the only one at that time. I felt I could check out the place without feeling hurried. I am intentionally supporting local small businesses especially during a pandemic. Lovely story with a nice associate. Score! The store was laid out beautifully and everything looked delicious: from their infamous caramel selection to Monterey milk chocolate toffee, I was in chocolate heaven. Now I regret not getting the hot chocolate, maybe next time. They also had their selection of Valentine's Day chocolates out. As a mug collector of notable places I visit, I was able to snag a beautiful chocolate colored mug from Lulu's with their logo. The pricing was reasonable so I didn't hesitate. (Other places charge so much for mugs/merch!) I can't wait for another warm day to visit Carmel, or perhaps even on a cold day - because I'll be back for more chocolates at Lulu's for sure. read more

It's the end of the year...just in time for presents from our service providers! Every year, one of our service providers sends over 15 pounds of these chocolates and sea salt caramels, and the office eats them all...a lot more quickly than we should. It's all about shared experiences and bonding, right? Sea salt caramels come with a variety of salts on top-- Himalayan pink, Hawaii black, and French fleur de sel, to name a few. If you taste the salts individually, they definitely have distinct tastes to them! We also got a box of the peanut brittle and a box of assorted chocolate truffles. I must have eaten nine of these sea salt caramel chocolates today! The combination of chunks of sea salt, medium-dark chocolate shell, and melt-in your-mouth caramel is difficult to beat. The caramel centers are easy to bite through but do not stick to your teeth. The size of the sea salt on top is perfect and lasts for the duration of the piece of candy. These treats are definitely sweet, but in a super satisfying (and not sickly) way. It's so easy to eat too many. 4/5 stars. I'm not as big a fan of the almond+peanut brittle-- the chunks of nut are quite large (dominate the confection) and not integrated into the taste of the brittle (sugar only). The chocolate is of a lower quality than those on the caramels, and the brittle itself is hard to break given the thickness and lack of brittle. 2/5. Truffles are quite sweet but the chocolate is smooth. Nothing that really stood out, but solid product. 3/5. read more

Lula's, hands down the best chocolate. I love their caramels and their aloha rocky road. The service is usually pretty good and the owners have always been pretty generous when asked for donations for schools. I took a star off because I put in online orders and the last 4 orders, they have not gotten it right. It's not like I'm asking for a complicated order, I just select the all milk chocolate option, it's an actual option but I always get a mix of dark and milk. It's a little disappointing but it never goes to waste. read more

They're a little pricey but once you bite in, you'll know it was all worth it. I also recommend stocking up on the sea salt taffy to help with withdrawals in between boxes. Best sea salt caramels that I have eaten in my entire lifetime - and I'm 60! Just the right amount of sweetness and salt (not too sickeningly sweet like most others are). Just the right amount of chewy (not runny like most others are), perfect combination of the chocolate with it, excellent mouth feel and taste! My favorite are the fleur de sel, but it's all personal taste. Love the plain wrapped caramels for 99 cents apiece too:) I go into their Carmel store once a week for those goodies! Great service as well. They are always very nice and helpful. I sent nine 30 piece assorted sea salt caramels boxes to Paris as gifts, a little worried because the French have such superb chocolatiers... Worried for nothing - Lula's got rave reviews! I had difficulty finding it but when I did...paradise! I'm not even a huge chocolate fan but I was buying some things for a friend who is, and I bought some things for my household as well. Their seasonal peppermint caramels are ridiculously wonderful (I had been given some as a gift once) and their toffee is amazing. The two women who helped me there were very kind and friendly, and when I asked for something that looked like it was out of stock, one of them went to the back to find it for me. The retail space is here is really just the foyer to the factory; there is a big interior window so you can see the staff working in the manufacturing side. read more

Oh my! I am the recipient of a box of 9 assorted sea salt caramels (milk chocolate) and I am in heaven! I like the variety of flavored salts and the touch of salt is subtle so you can still taste the creamy yet chewy caramel and smooth, silky milk chocolate. I sat on this box for a few weeks as I did not realize these chocolates are to die for. I am not far from Monterey so I will have to make a trip to this chocolatier and maybe tour their factory. I must say... I have tried a lot of sea salt caramels and they are all different qualities, sizes and tastes but Lula's has got a wicked good sea salt caramel assortment. See's candies has been a long time favorite of mine being a Californian but I am seeing (and appreciating) more and more the independent, small, mom n' pop, passionate chocolate makers nowadays. Today after lunch at Inn Kensington Alan and I stopped by Country Cheese at the end of the block, which he'd not yet seen. As he was exploring the jars of jams and preserves, I noticed a package of Lula's Dark Aloha Rocky Road. I have disliked rocky road from childhood, particularly the sneaky marshmallows that disrupted the chocolate. I only like marshmallows when they're melted beyond recognition and that early rocky road was milk chocolate, besides. This package had a label w/ stylized Hawaiian hibiscus. Well, that drew me in for a start. And the chocolate is dark, my favorite. The marshmallows are handmade. That's possible. Maybe they're different from the ones in the grocery store. The nuts are salted macadamias. We bought one (4 oz for $5.99) so I could check it out. Once we got home I broke off a piece and then another. The dark chocolate is perfection. The marshmallows are still marshmallows. I'm sorry. I'm glad they're not full of the crap most commercial ones are, but they're still too sweet and fluffy for my taste. The macadamias, on the other hand made it all worthwhile. I think I would love their dark chocolate covered macadamias, assuming they make those. The next time we're on the Monterey Peninsula I'm going to see if we can visit their factory. Country Cheese also carries their salted caramels, or maybe their plain wrapped ones. Whichever, I will have to check them out when I'm ready for another indulgence. In the meantime, I will enjoy the rest of the rocky road, accepting the marshmallows as part of the package. read more
