Maybe... just maybe... I've found my Brooklyn pilates studio!!…read more So... I work a ton of hours and tonight, by some miracle, I was able to escape the office around 5pm. I intended to go to another studio in the area, but I was running too late for the class and was this close to giving up on getting my pilates fix for the week. I had been getting daily emails (which I found a bit annoying) from Streamline for the past several months about their availability. As I retreated home... I remembered... they have a Reformer Plus class at 7:30pm. It was literally around the corner from where I was, so I went for it. Just my luck, not only was there room for me in the class, but I was the only person. I essentially had a one-on-one session with Phillipa and she was great! She did an excellent job explaining the various movements / articulations. For me, that's truly the sign of an excellent instructor, when they can perfectly direct you by saying rather than doing. She was professional, knowledgeable and easy-going. This was only the second reformer class I had done, so we started out on the mat and she introduced me to some movements that would help me on the reformer. I had a solid workout -- definitely a full body workout and my muscles felt the strain. I generally prefer to sweat a little more during my ideal pilates sessions, but in this class, I felt the strain without the sweat, which I appreciated. After the class, I inquired about private sessions and Phillipa explained a special Streamline offers for first-timers and that the studio is very flexible and tries to match you with an instructor based on your schedule/needs. She also suggested classes that I should take based on my skill level, identifying ones that would provide the best challenge and also be conducive to my schedule. It's taken a while for me to find a pilates class / studio that I really like and I think Streamline Pilates may be it. I appreciate the fact that they focus exclusively on pilates -- it's not a yoga studio parading like a pilates studio. There is tons of equipment / apparatuses. The studio is great with a wide open space and very high ceilings. If the other instructors are anything like Phillip, you'll definitely be in good hands. I highly recommend it.

Dani & her team of fitness trainers are absolutely AMAZING!!! I was looking for a workout space…read morethat I could feel empowered and this exceeded my expectations. The first session was simply a conversation with the trainer solely for the purposes of learning what was important to me so they could tailor not just the workouts, but also ways to help me feel inspired as a whole person. That made me feel so special. The trainers were sure to respect and be mindful of what could seemingly be small details but were important me. That for me is priceless! The physical space itself is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! It was designed with so much intentionality that it made the workout sessions even more enjoyable. The small group sessions are lovely. They aren't overstimulating and that was key for me. Every workout session left me feeling inspired, encouraged and renewed not just physically but mentally & emotionally. Lastly, Dani, the owner and founder, is an absolute PLEASURE to do business with and her passion for mind and body fitness is evident. She wants every client to get what they need to feel empowered. She makes herself accessible and easy to communicate with either by phone, email or text. As a nurse leader, I am deeply appreciative of what she has created at Very Personal Training and will continue to do support her business not only with my own personal training but also with group training events that I will host for my clinical team and friends. They can help you improve your form, increase strength and flexibility, and cultivate a stillness inside you that you've been longing to access. The Power class will have you standing taller and feeling stronger. Walking out of the Hatha class, I realized all of the placed in my body that had previously been in pain and were no longer now that she had helped me unkink and unwind. Going every week is a pleasure and a relief! Beyond teaching excellence, Jyll does something rare and beautiful: she is a convener of community. This is something so many of us lack in modern life in NYC. Jyll is able to build and protect a space that is welcoming and supportive and life-affirming. She has created a family that supports each other in health and in life. Coming to Urban Asanas 3 years ago was one of the best decisions I have made in my life and I cannot recommend it more.

I then tracked her down in Crown Heights, where I live and have since tried a lot of different classes. Each one has impact- unexpected, more than you think kind of impact. At first I was all about the power class, I tried yoga in the park, breath and beats, and have attended a variety of in person special events. At the moment I'm a regular at Soul Sunday and if I don't attend, my week just feels different. Jyll is anatomy heavy which I love- I love a class where you understand what connects with what and how each moving part affects your body, heart, and mind. Jyll has me laughing and sometimes crying each week and each time I walk away feeling more grounded, strong, and JOYOUS. I can't praise this studio enough. I've been doing yoga for over 30 years and no one compares to jyll, no studio compares. No where else has the energy, diversity, and community that Urban Asanas offers. Try it! You won't regret it :)

I was looking for something different than my usual yoga class, so keep in mind, her Restorative Stretch class is NOT yoga. Because this isn't yoga, you'll also want basic equipment with you if you have it, such as a stretching strap, bolster, block and tennis ball. Maya said they tend to adjust the props needed for class based on what people have available at home, which is so thoughtful! The class focused on isolated stretches and working different parts of the body in unique ways with the props. I can tell Maya is a passionate, very intelligent instructor - she was excellent about verbally announcing modifications and checking in on the group. Studio Maya offers dance classes and core classes but no yoga. However, if you have physical limitations, you will be able to keep up in the Restorative Stretch class. It is slow-moving and thoughtful. I love Brooklyn, NY, and the next time I find myself there after the pandemic,, I would absolutely stop in for a class with Maya again!

So, it was a unique experience to have a slower pace class. The studio is massive and there's also a cute changing room that's got Moroccan themed lighting and pillows. The studio has water, water bottles, towels, and all the material you'll use in class (Bosu ball, mat, etc). As for the class itself, I took essential core and had absolutely zero idea of what I was doing. There were a lot of micro movements involved to work out your abs, but as a first timer, I felt lost and disoriented. The instructor, Maya, was of great help. She made sure I had proper posture and movement and gave me individual attention. I don't quite feel the core burn I had hoped for, but she explained the more you do it, the more you learn to isolate your muscles. She was a pleasure to meet and be taught by. Although this form of exercise isn't for me, I understand why others do it. I personally feel like you'd have to engage in it for several months to really understand the movements and see results. This studio seems to offer quality classes for those of you who are into Pilates and calisthenics. (:
