After doing pilates for over a year now, I've always been intrigued by Club Pilates. I never got…read morearound to trying them because they're not readily available on ClassPass and I heard it's hard to cancel a membership if you start one. Randomly stumbled upon the Park Slope location when I was spontaneously looking for pilates options around Downtown Brooklyn for a few hours later. This location is one of the few ones that have offerings on ClassPass, and even then, they release limited times only a couple days ahead of time. I like this place enough to short list it, but I don't think it will become my go-to. The lobby area is big and spacious with benches for people to wait and take off their shoes. They also have a fancy water machine with crisp cold water. There is a curtain next to the front desk which is where all the equipment is and classes take place. The cubby and bathroom part is awkward. There's only one bathroom. I arrived early and accepted the offer to use the bathroom. Turns out I had to go behind the curtain and cut through the current class to get there. Awkward x2 because I had to walk back. At the same time I'm glad I went before the previous class ended, because there was a long queue for people to change before/after class since there's no changing room and only one bathroom. The cubby is also located behind the curtains. It's before you get to the machines. I guess they do that so people can kind of see their belongings during the class, but if they constantly have a front desk person, I think it's better to have the cubby in the lobby, so people who arrive early can get themselves ready for class sooner. I mostly like the workout part of the studio. This studio has 12 spots. Each spot comes with a reformer, chair, tower, mat, ball, block, and a wide mirror right behind your machine. Having so many equipment per spot also means each spot is widely spaced out which I appreciate. The reformer itself was nice given the width. I think it's wider than most reformers, maybe same size or slightly narrower than megaformers. It had a wooden frame but wasn't creaky and stiff. My biggest complaint is how the straps (both long and short) are stiff to hold on to. Mirrors aren't across the whole wall so you can't see yourself when you're facing the aisle. Not sure if it's specific to this location that there's and industrial vibe to the décor. I don't mind it except the ceiling lights kind of shone into my eyes when I lay down on the carriage. I joined a Level 1 class and it was sufficiently challenging for me. I felt the burn during class and had sore muscles for a couple days afterwards too. The instructor didn't ask if anyone was new (or newish) which I was surprised about. At the same time, I think they expect people to join their complimentary 30 minute intro class if they're super new. Looking back to when I started pilates, I don't think one 30 minute session is sufficient for me to feel comfortable.

I'm obsessed with SLT and this Park Slope location in particular!…read more The reformers are top-notch, the method is very traditional and classic lagree, and the instructors are very well-trained. They have a keen eye on form, cue transitions seamlessly, and sequence moves in a way that causes muscle fatigue while switching it up and not leaving you lingering in one particular move for too long. My favorite coaches are Casey (she used to teach at Studio MDR in Southern California, which is major lagree street cred), Elissa and Chase. Their routines are always creative, spicy and leave you wanting more! Happy working out, Yelpers!

Upon my arrival, the receptionist informed me that my reservation was not showing up in the system, despite having email and app confirmation directly from the studio. Despite presenting evidence, I was told there was nothing she could do. I suggested manually signing me up due to what appeared to be a system error, but she claimed she lacked the authority to do so. When I requested to speak to the manager for authorization, I was informed that the manager was off that day. Given the half-empty class and my effort in traveling 40 minutes to attend, I expected some level of leniency or understanding. Unfortunately, I was not permitted to take the class. I understand that technical glitches can occur, but the lack of a backup plan or any effort to accommodate the situation was disheartening. I believe in fair treatment and flexibility, especially in situations where the fault lies with the studio's reservation system. Edited to say: the instructor also walked up to say "luckily there's an extra space in the class! This is not a review on the instructor but of the reception's handling of the situation.

I was looking for something different than my usual yoga class, so keep in mind, her Restorative Stretch class is NOT yoga. Because this isn't yoga, you'll also want basic equipment with you if you have it, such as a stretching strap, bolster, block and tennis ball. Maya said they tend to adjust the props needed for class based on what people have available at home, which is so thoughtful! The class focused on isolated stretches and working different parts of the body in unique ways with the props. I can tell Maya is a passionate, very intelligent instructor - she was excellent about verbally announcing modifications and checking in on the group. Studio Maya offers dance classes and core classes but no yoga. However, if you have physical limitations, you will be able to keep up in the Restorative Stretch class. It is slow-moving and thoughtful. I love Brooklyn, NY, and the next time I find myself there after the pandemic,, I would absolutely stop in for a class with Maya again!

So, it was a unique experience to have a slower pace class. The studio is massive and there's also a cute changing room that's got Moroccan themed lighting and pillows. The studio has water, water bottles, towels, and all the material you'll use in class (Bosu ball, mat, etc). As for the class itself, I took essential core and had absolutely zero idea of what I was doing. There were a lot of micro movements involved to work out your abs, but as a first timer, I felt lost and disoriented. The instructor, Maya, was of great help. She made sure I had proper posture and movement and gave me individual attention. I don't quite feel the core burn I had hoped for, but she explained the more you do it, the more you learn to isolate your muscles. She was a pleasure to meet and be taught by. Although this form of exercise isn't for me, I understand why others do it. I personally feel like you'd have to engage in it for several months to really understand the movements and see results. This studio seems to offer quality classes for those of you who are into Pilates and calisthenics. (:

I lost money on classes for which I had to waitlist weeks in advance, and if I don't constantly manage my waitlists, I lose credits for classes I can't attend. While they have a 12-hour cancellation policy for booked classes, it doesn't seem to apply to waitlisted classes, which is unfair. I bought a 3-pack intro offer and could only waitlist for classes 2-3 weeks ahead because everything else was full. If I get pulled into a waitlisted class I can't make, there's no way for me to drop it without losing my credit. Their support team refused to refund my money or credits, despite it being my first time making this mistake. The classes I attended weren't even full. All in all with $80 intro offer, I could only attend a single class. The whole thing feels like a money-grabbing scheme. I wouldn't recommend this location to anyone.

Today, I asked a quick question only because I was literally confused. He snapped at me so hard and was so rude to me as though I was bothering him. Notably, I am a WOC and not light skinned. It was not lost on me, that he ensured he told the blonde white woman next to me so nicely that she was doing it perfectly while correcting her (so factually not doing it perfectly?) I was on the verge of tears the rest of class, and in fact missed doing numerous exercises properly bc I just wanted to leave. It's sad that when I "didnt know my place" so to speak, I was quickly reprimanded. Anyway, I thought about using my last 3 classes on another teacher who I love but I realized ultimately, it was such a bad experience - why bother going back to a studio that thinks its okay to treat students so disparately based on perceived race/class. Also, I do want to note that the initial response from the studio is likely say they aren't racist or colorist etc. These statements that act as though descriptors of behaviors, systems, structural issues and entrenched societal norms, are instead heinous accusations obfuscate the actual issue and tends to push off fixing the underlying issue.
