This restaurant does not have a clear concept, to the extent that you can hardly make an opinion about it. At least I am having difficulties. I can't give it more than 4 stars, or less than 4 stars, however, I have a vague impression that those 4 are not exactly it either.
When I first came across it accidentally, I had to think WOW, what a perfect vacation-like location for dinner and drinks with friends on a warm summer evening in Vienna. I still don't know what exactly it looks like inside, but the garden in Lucullus is a bit like that bar next to your hotel in Egypt in which you definitely enjoyed sipping cocktails. I say Egypt, cause the bar in Egypt is normally made by a hotel chain and doesn't have much character, but it gives you an idea of what a beach bar anywhere southern should be. Here as well you basically have the idea that the sea is a few meters away, you believe you can almost hear the waves.. even though it is only U-Bahn passing by every now and then. That wouldn't be bad in itselft. But once you really are sitting there, you want to know OK, what is this place really. It can't be just any beach bar anywhere ever, because we are in Vienna, and if it is going to have the southern flair, than it should at least opt for a specific influence. It should have a concept. It is still comfortable, no doubt - only having enough decoration but lacking character.
The next issue you have is the menu. Not only is the presentation confusing, so you first don't know which price refers to what, but the choice of food and the pricing system are on the strange side too. For example, you can have some Riesengarnelen with something for 24 EUR. Ok, I might have the beach impression here, but that still does not make me go for a pretty expensive plate of Garnelen, which obviously haven't been freshly caught earlier that day in the sea which is not even there. Except for some other expensive fish, the rest are mainly Austrian specialities, such es Eierschwammerlgulasch, which is again not my thing, but you might like it. However, as a Vorspeise I tasted some tuna tartar, which was packed with soy sprouts and a weird sauce...1 star, and a question it this should be an Asian beach bar after all? Luckily I managed to identify the safe option of Bio Backhendl. Except for the fact that they serve the meat on pop corn - I would say excellent taste!! But why on pop corn? As if the feeling that the whole place is just a Kulisse is not already enough. It shouldn't increase the portion visually either, since there is enough of it already. The salad they serve in addition is as tasty as can get. The Bowle drink I had was not too sweet and had looots of taste. You can't but leave even more confused than you were when you came. And you can't even quite put your finger on whether you want to come back or not. read more
