On a Friday afternoon, my husband and I were looking to get some donuts. We went to another shop, but they were all sold out. Lucky for us, Lucky Donut had plenty left. No matter which donut shop we go to, we get one blueberry cake donut and one Apple fritter. The blueberry cake donut was so good! I loved the texture and the blueberry flavor was strong. I think Lucky has the best donuts I've had in recent decades. I used to go there 2-3 times/week when I lived in SL. The texture, taste, & freshness of the donuts - nearly perfect every time! Hands down they have best freshest donuts in town! Locally owned by the nicest most hard working couple (sometimes their sons help out) we have been coming for 20+ years and they feel like family. Our top picks: chocolate old fashion, chocolate sprinkles, maple bar, sugar, glazed. The glazed donut/holes are light and fluffy and sized right. Kinda disappointing how downhill this place went. Use to come here for years when I went to high school and use to be really good. Maybe after time/ years the owners got tired or really lazy or to be honest both. From old fashioned to croissant sandwiches, everything they make is a gift. The make a world famous cinnamon twist that only the doughnut god can create! Some donuts were not that fresh and could have been from the night before as it was sitting shy in the tray I went at around 10am btw. The customer service could have been better. There is ample seating as well and parking on the side streets is free and business metered parking spaces out front. Lately I have been on a donut kick, more specifically chocolate old fashion donuts. They are old school but have everything I crave a bit chocolate and cake like texture. Usually donut shops are plenty when you are looking for one. I was curious to what's nearby and came across this one in the estudillo village area. Parked across the street and walking in expecting to find police on their break, there few a couple of Oakland fire fighters holding up the line cashing in on their lottery tickets. This shop has everything, breakfast sandwiches, banh minhs and of course donuts. Ordered a couple of old fashions and discovered the cost didn't satisfy credit card use threshold so a twist donut bar was added. Happily got into my car where ordinarily I try to practice a no eating rule, I break down and gobbled the two donuts. They were good. I'm afraid I'm getting the sugar rush and potentially getting diabetic. The donut tasted fresh and the counter person was pleasant. If you like poor customer service and stale overpriced donuts, then this place is for you. A relative recommended this spot for fresh donuts, so I decided to give it a try for a special occasion. I needed 24 donuts for a baby shower and tried calling several times the week prior to place an order, but no one ever picked up. Upon entering the facility at 8AM, I noticed the place seemed dirty and outdated. I was never greeted at the counter, instead the lady appeared to be stressed. There was a man in the back hand dipping donuts with his bare hands, no gloves. He came out and looked at me as if wanting to ask what I was going to order, but he began to pour himself some coffee. I asked the lady for 2 dozen of her freshest donuts, but she said what I saw was all they had. The donuts appeared old, possibly ones that hadn't been sold the day prior. There was a rack full of fresh donuts that was clearly visible from where I was standing, which the man had been working on. I didn't want to cause a commotion, so I just ordered from what I was being told was available when I should've just walked out. I looked around for pricing, but nothing was visible so I asked and she told me it was $1.90 for each donut, but I was being charged $55 total. When I questioned how that was tabulated, she became very upset and difficult to understand. The entire interaction was disappointing and I would never recommend this place. The donuts are good here and I like their big and buttery croissants. Today I just tried their croissant bacon egg and cheese sandwich and it's good - it actually has real fried egg in it and not the frozen kind. It was also only 6.50 and didn't have to wait long at all. Zocalo sells breakfast sandwiches next door and it's more expensive and crowded. Also, if you're looking to get coffee at Lucky Donuts they have stationed coffee on the counter. So go to Zocalo if you want an iced coffee or latte ;). read more
