The night before, I was craving fluffy regular donuts. I was tempted to go to a 24-hour donut spot in Oakland but decided to wait until the next morning to stop somewhere closer. Using Yelp, I found "Donut Design" with mixed reviews and decided to check it out and see what the fuss was all about. It's located in a small shopping plaza off of Washington Ave and has very compact parking spaces in front. Make sure to watch your car doors! This spot has bold, red, upper case lettering on the store front - simple and easy to read off the streets. When I walked in, I wasn't greeted by anyone or a friendly smile, instead I said "Hello!" to the worker or possible owner. That's fine... no biggie but would've added to the experience. I glance to my right and see bright yellow colored benches to sit at for dine-in and to my left are the nicely lit donut displays. You can find a mixture of original, traditional, blueberry, twists, jelly-filled, apple fritters, and sprinkled varieties to choose from. Reviews mentioned to double check pricing for accuracy. I ended up getting half a dozen of regular traditional donuts for $8.99 and pricing seemed okay. This place took credit card but based on what I read on Yelp, if you want to avoid the credit card fee, aim for spending more than $5. Excited to sink my teeth into a chocolate covered donut, the first bite was chewy but not as fresh as I had hoped, kind of stale. The flavor of the donut was okay. It could've been because I picked up donuts in the afternoon or the heat impacted the flavor, not sure. I'm willing to try this place again but may not be my first choice. This place has gotten so bad. It used to be okay to grab a coffee. Not the best coffee, but would do. The donuts are stale, the coffee is mediocre and the prices have just gotten outrages. I expect more if I have to pay more but this place just priced themselves out for me. Skip it and just go to Starbucks if you're going to pay that much. It was $5 for a small iced coffee and they sweetened it which I don't like. Honestly, I think they opened a pre-made iced coffee and put it in a cup. It was terrible but I was in a rush and didn't dispute it. The prices just leave me in a bad mood. By the way, I got a muffin and I swear it was a few days old. First time visiting this mom and pop donut shop and have to say they make a wonderful apple fritter...plenty of nooks and crannies for optimum crispiness on the outside yet soft inside...great flavor of the cinnamon, little chunks of apple with a light sugar glaze. I can't vouch for the cake donuts as a basic glazed or apple fritter are the only ones I ever get unless the place offers a maple one with bacon! The glazed donut was perfectly airy with a good texture and not overly glazed. Nothing fancy about this donut shop and all about their product. Don't believe the "credit cards accepted"sign. I bought two donuts that came out to $2.25. Then the lady said that I had to buy $5 worth of food to use my card. I didn't want to buy more things so I asked her to just charge me $0.50 or whatever for not meeting the $5 minimum and she just shrugged and said that she was charging me $4. This really disappoints me because I don't like giving out 1 stars and I love indulging in donuts. Approached the intersection and this shop is tucked along a row of a few shops, across from Dollar Tree. There's a row of parking spots available in the front for customers. My first impression of this place: small, old school, and a little rundown. There are 4 booths/tables that's back to back on the right side of the place. On the left, you have the register and about 6-8 trays of various donuts. Upon walking in, the woman working was talking on the phone. I thought I'd let her finish or pause her conversation before I order. After a minute or so, she asked me what I wanted, then started talking on the phone again. I told her my order of half a dozen dozen holes and went over to the register. When she rung me up for a dozen donut holes, I said I only wanted half and she proceeded to roll her eyes and snatch the other half dozen back. Okay, experience and customer service wasn't so great, but hey at least I have donuts! Here's the biggest letdown - the donuts were made with old and stale oil. STALE. OIL. And then he was like I've already spent so much money blah blah, but he ended up getting us some Smoothies! I went with the Boston cream and they stuffed quite a bit of cream in the donut! The menu also has some breakfast and coffee items as well. The older lady rang me up and it showed the total as 5.49, however she ran my credit card and I saw that she charged me $6 instead. Donut Design is another mom-and-pop store located in a very very small strip mall situated among a liquor store, pizza joint, nail salon, Chinese restaurant, and an insurance company. I've been coming here for years all the back to my high school days and now occasionally when I want a quick snack when visiting family in the area. The husband and wife team who own this tiny shop are a wonderful couple who take care of their customers, which is why I always see a loyal following of old timers here especially in the mornings. And now I see the next generation of their family starting to take over the business and are just as friendly, courteous, and caring as their parents. That all said, they have a pretty good assortment of fresh donuts, croissants (these go pretty fast as they make sandwiches, too), giant cinnamon rolls, danish bars, and other baked goods. I got there late and most of their stuff was already gone for the day. But I managed to get my hands on a dozen donut holes (they always stick in a few extra), chocolate old fashioned, and crumb cake. The donut holes were light and fluffy with a nice sweet glaze. The chocolate old fashioned had a great crispy exterior covered with your standard chocolate glaze. The crumb cake donut was moist (and not dense and heavy) like a good cake should be with a nice hint of cinnamon in the crumbs that completely covered this donut along a light sugar glaze. By the way, there's no way that I finished all of these donuts by myself. I could have, but didn't, LOL! My personal favorites here in the past have been the apple fritter, bear claw, and glazed raspberry filled (each of these are pretty big in size and scrumptious; they were out of the fritters and claws that morning, which was sad for me but good for them since they sold out). Coffee here is okay (it's not a specialty cafe mind you), but nothing is better than having hot java on the spot with your donuts (they also make espresso drinks here, too). If you're in the San Leandro area, stop by this long-time establishment and grab a few donuts (you should come out with a pink box) to satisfy your sugar cravings. You won't regret it!
