Empty little shop with sparse selection of donuts but still pretty good. Paid about $24 for half a dozen donuts, a dozen donut holes, a sandwich, and a can of pineapple drink. I'm not one do to reviews (let alone negative ones) but today was different. 2 stars for the donuts, -4 for the unnecessarily rude and hostile service. Horrible experience today. The guy was incredibly rude. My AUTISTIC 4yr old didn't know what he wanted so we ordered a couple other donuts, paid for it and sat down while my kid could finish deciding. My kid went back up a couple times to look at the selection (but staying out of the way and we told other customers to go ahead). A couple minutes later, there was only one other customer left and he told my husband that "he(my son) needs to get out of the way. I have other customers" then proceeded to say to my kid "this kid doesn't know what he wants and has been standing here for too long. I have other customers to help I can't keep waiting for him." WHAT???? He made a big deal about him not knowing what he wanted, even though we weren't blocking anyone and we told people to go ahead! It was completely unnecessary and unkind, especially toward a child. We got up and left without getting him a donut because of how uncomfortable and disrespected we felt. On top of that, they didn't even have the donuts my son was originally hoping for, which is why he was having a hard time in the first place!!! Having a special needs kid who struggles adapting to change is hard enough - a little empathy from the owner would have went a long way here. We won't be coming back, and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone who expects basic courtesy or patience especially if you're visiting with indecisive kids. There are three types of donuts shops: polished chains, hipster shops with crazy flavor and unicorn frosting, and solid mom and pop shops. This is the third. Not as polished and showy but standard fair with no nonsense stoic store owners. They seem to run out pretty quick. Continuing my CV donut quest, I stopped in at Donut Express, finally trying this place after having driven by it for years. Parking is a bit of a challenge here as there are only a few spots in front so I parked in a lot behind the building and walked around. Inside it's definitely no frills- there are some places to sit but definitely nothing fancy. There was a decent selection of donuts still at about 8:30 on a Tuesday morning so I got a chocolate raised and a blueberry cake. The chocolate was good, nice and fluffy and no oily aftertaste. The blueberry cake was okay- a little soft/soggy in my opinion. I love a good cake donut that's soft inside and a little crunchy as you bite into it but this one was really like cake. I came here to drop off a computer that i sold to the owner. He offered to give me a dozen donuts for driving a long ways. I got 4 raised chocolate, 4 raised glazed, two maple twists, maple bar and a fist full of donut holes to fill the box. All of them were really good. Light and fluffy inside with good frosting/glaze. Solid performance there. We ate 'em all. Good thing we exercise. The thing I would nite is that the selection is OK but not awesome. Granted, I was not there at 05:00 when they open. Maybe the selection is better than. It didn't look like they ever have an amazing assortment, however. More like "do a great job on a narrow selection of classics" seems to be the concept. If I'd paid cash, it would be a solid value. Good pricing overall. No frills shop - not a hangout. You can hang out, but it is pretty spare. More like, get your stuff and go. Not a huge customer chat heavy dialog with the counter person either. Nobody is hostile, just seems to be very functional. I was impressed with Donut Express's quality, wow. My favorite go-to donuts are sugar and chocolate old fashion and boy did both of them deliver. The yeasty sugar donut was amazing, it was pillowy soft and tasted very fresh. I noticed it had a slightly more brown color than other yeast donuts I've had which signals it was fried higher heat maybe? The middle was soft so not over fried so I'm not complaining. The chocolate glaze had actual chocolate flavor. You'll notice the chocolate glaze on some establishments skimp on the cocoa and it just taste like sugar. The old fashion crumbled perfected and I'm coming back to texture again, wow. I wanted a powder and they didn't have that so selection isn't huge but they know what they're doing with the ones they offer! read more

I've tried a few of the donut places around here, and was definitely a bit disappointed with this one. Here's why: 1. Egg and Cheese Croissant sandwich: The cheese wasn't tasty, it was American Cheese, not very good. The egg was overcooked, I think cooked, and then microwaved, based on watching them? I would give it 2 stars (vs 4-5 stars for Castro Valley Donuts, and 3-4 stars for Lee's Donuts). 2. The French curl donut was just ok, not as good as Castro Valley Donuts Down the street. I would give it 3 stars, vs 4-5 stars at Castro Valley Donuts (I haven't seen others carry this model of donut). 3. Coffee: Unfortunately their espresso machine was down. I was a bit disappointed, and di not order any drip coffee. 4. Other: Price was just ok, $8.50 for the donut and sandwich. Also, the costs of donuts are more expensive (two dozen donuts usually run about $35 or so), so the value isn't quite there either. Horrible customer service. I got doughnuts there and they looked good. The lady put the doughnuts in the bag. My the time I got to my car the doughnuts were ruined. The frosting got all over the bag and my doughnuts it all their frosting onto the bag. My first time here: INCREDIBLE!!!! I realize they just opened, or maybe reopened, so the oil is really fresh, the dough is fluffy and the chocolate on top is really good quality. Looking at Yelp! I noticed for such a small town Castro Valley has a lot of donut options especially when you include the bakeries nearby. This is a great old school donut shop, no thrills or frills. I would go here for a classic donut. I would not go here for coffee as based on what I saw I do not think it would be much better than 7-11 coffee (all love 7-11). I have tried the donuts at Safeway and these are much better, the other donut shop by TJ's I heard was sold a few years back and used to love that place. I need to try Rudy's now and report back. Probably the best place in the vicinity, but not one of those places you'd want to travel very far to visit. One time I went in to get do it's and the person behind the counter ghosted me, after I started my order she just kind of walked off to the back area and never came back. I stood there for a few minutes because I thought maybe she was checking on something or whatever and she'd be right back, but this was not the case.
