Immaculate atmosphere and the exact sort of thing we were looking for for breakfast. We didn't get her name but saw on the receipt her name might have been Davi, she was such a bundle of light and life, so attentive and kind! She immediately gave us wonderful recommendations which we all adored. The table ordered praline bacon to share (do yourself a favor and get this), one ordered the praline bacon waffle, another ordered the bananas foster waffle, and I got the seasonal vegetable hash. We were all in HEAVEN with what we ordered. From the first bite to the last it we were all absolutely stunned by how delicious and well made everything was. I savored every bite as did my compatriots. One gal ordered a couple things to go for her family (huevos rancheros for the hubby and cinnamon rolls for her kiddos) and our waitress Davi recommended they bring out the cinnamon rolls unfired so that she could pop them in the oven when she got home after a short drive. It was such good attention to detail that felt like such a friendly offer. Absolute superstars, the lot of you. Next time I'm back in Portland I'm absolutely spoiling some friends here with what I can only describe as a transcendent experience.

As i approached the building, I noticed that it was full of people. I fell into the street. I was in and out of consciousness. My heart was racing at the thought that I drove 15 hours and could not get a seat at SCREEN DOOR. As I walked into the building a humble man greeted me. He told me that they would clean off a table for me. WOO HOO. I bursted out crying at the thought that I finally got my seat. As I sat down a soft chair graced my bottom. Beautiful. I looked around and the scenery was beautiful. As I looked at the menu, my eyes sharply turned to the chicken and waffles. Deliciously perfect choice. I ordered my food and got a coffee. My chicken and waffles arrived and I took a bite. I started floating. My soul left my body. I looked down at my body as I floating away, I was enjoying every bite. I reached the heavens. A loud voice said "Its not your time yet. Return and enjoy the rest of your meal." I ascend back to the chair and every chicken and every waffle was gone. The servers were SO kind. I got my check and shead a tear, knowing that was the best meal of my life. Over all from kind servers to and delicious food, SCREEN DOOR was an awesome experience. SCREEN DOOR deserves a 5 star, however I am going to give it a 5 star. I loved every moment. Thank for read my review. Love you.

You need to take your luck and stop by and see if they open since their hours on Yelp are not accurate or current. I did not call the phone listed on Yelp, so I may need to do it next time. My first time there was about three weeks ago during lunch without looking for anything special. Since then, I stopped by between 2-4 pm, and they closed, so I am craving it! I also ordered the beignet and was not impressed since I still tasted the uncooked thick dough. I would order this again before giving my final take on it and other things on their menu. I loved their humor decors; they all made me giggle, looking at and reading them. They are conveniently located at the Corner 14 Food Pod with other carts with limited parking on the pavement area; otherwise, it's gravel underneath a bridge/overpass structure, so drive slowly. There are shaded sitting areas and an electronic fireplace for cold days.

My son chose to have the Alligator Nuggets! The redeeming factor here was that they were still tender. It seemed the oil was likely too hot, or overused and the breading was lightly burned. Either way they still had an okay taste, they were mostly missing that golden brown color that you hope for when getting breaded fried foods. The crawfish etouffee was pretty disappointing for us. The sauce/gravy to rice ratio was WAY off, essentially it was about a 2 inch tall pack of rice, and a drizzle of gravy. The gravy's seasoning was disappointingly spicy just to be spicy instead of having an even blend of flavor and space. Had the flavor punch been balanced with the spice level it would have at least tasted better, and felt better generally speaking. Lastly the crawfish were cut up into even tinier pieces, which made for a lack of protein in this dish. While the decoration outside the cart is fun and enticing, the food, and the personal experience were lacking. There was very little excitement in the truck, and seemingly a lack of passion/engagement that we've experienced at other food trucks that change the overall experience for us. We had fun trying out a food that has deep roots in our family, and may come back to see if we can get a redemption review in the future.

The walls are full of bright, colorful artwork that is for sale and made by the resident artist. The uptown shrimp & grits are a must order. They were decadent, rich in flavor, and cheesy. The country boy breakfast was also a delicious option. I enjoyed the creamy and well seasoned gravy that comes on top of it.

However, now that I've been a few times, I notice little details like "why do the hostesses continue to seat people right next to each other?". There are plenty of other open tables that people could be seated at, but it really eliminated our ability to have a connecting conversation, as it felt like we were a party of 6 with us 2 in the middle!!! And 2 of the people clearly had some personal "issues" going on and were very disruptive. The space is small, but the visual displays of all the artwork make it a talking point conversation. The main artist was on hand & we found ourselves with the opportunity to talk with him while we waited on our food (which took a lot longer than expected). Funny, we ordered 1st & ours came out 10 mins later after everyone else. I decided to go with the Chicken and Waffles, and we also had the shrimp and grits. The food hit on all cylinders, and the only thing that was needed next was to make a move for a cocktail and a little walking in downtown to change it up. Will definitely return, but I will be more direct and vocal about seating that's for sure.

And to be quite honest, the answer is kinda. No offense. But, is the name justified? And the only answer to that question is a definite YES. Last, the main question you are probably asking yourself is, should I eat there? And the answer to that, Sarah, is yes. You should definitely eat at this food cart. Let me tell you why. Taste of Soul gives you just that, a traditional soul food experience. But, just from the one meal I ordered on a dreary, cloudy Portland day, I had more than a taste of soul. I had a whole flavor reset happen to my palate. My world grew sunnier and brighter with an infinite amount of temporary taste happiness. The sweet tender taste of the catfish coated in a dusting of cornmeal and spices fried to perfection danced on my tongue as the accompanying sauce gave a zesty kick to the already flavor packed fresh fish fillets. The chunky fries were pillowy and perfect, potatoes partitioned to particular flavor packed pieces and promises of pleasant tastes. Also, nicely seasoned - totally worth upgrading the regular catfish order. I did have to wait a bit, but the owners were so nice to give me a free lemonade for my wait and they were generally very kind. You could tell they loved being there and cooking up some delicious food for everyone. How often do you hear Portland and soul in a single sentence? Come try this place out!

I was recently in NOLA and was in need of some favorites. So here it is. The sampler is the way to go, a bit of everything. greens are hearty and well-seasoned, beans are smoky and rich, jambalaya is maybe the favorite so savory and the étouffée is creamy and lots of seafood flavor, though a little mild, and needed a little salt and hot sauce (just my taste). Also got a corn pudding is hot (not spicy), sweet and that crust, though not crunchy is the best part, caramelized and just lovely. This restaurant is family-owned and run by the sweetest woman. From the moment we walked in, we were treated like just like family, which was so refreshing. The food was incredible, let me tell you that lady put her foot up in that food, it was made with nothing but love and soul. I had the catfish platter with collard green soup and mac and cheese, and my boyfriend had the jambalaya pasta. They even packed our meals in to-go plates so we could take our leftovers with us, which was such a thoughtful touch. Portland isn't really known for soul food, but hands down, this is the best place to find it out here. The vibe of the restaurant was comfortable and authentically "old school". Right down to the Anita Baker playing in the background and the full on hot sauce selection. It truly felt like I was eating at my auntie's house. I could not recommend this place more. YOU NEED TO COME HERE!!!! 10/10
