My family showed up with no reservations to a place that was obviously a local favorite. Went here on Tuesday! I got the pasta primavera with pesto. I didn't really like it with just the pesto.. it had a lot of olive oil. I tried to salvage it by getting some marinara sauce to add some flavor. That worked for the most part. The service was really great and food came out super quickly! Slow service and burnt pizza. Combined with overpriced draft beer, try Joe's Station House for a better experience. Lucca is too busy taking customers for granted to get a good review from me. As usual, they were crowded, and since they only have one server on weeknights... it was hurry up and wait. The place was as full as a weekend (all tables filled). So we had to wait longer than reasonable for service though she was busting her butt to get to everyone. Add only one bartender to maximize the slowness. The really thin pizza is very good when timed right, but a couple minutes too long and... uh-oh. While I've had better experiences at Lucca in the past, 2 of the last 4 times I was there, my pizza was burnt (and I'm definitely not waiting another 40 minutes for a re-do) and it was a challenge to get service. In fact, once I showed them the burnt pizza and since I had eaten a couple pieces on a non burnt side, they replaced my large with a medium, and left the large on the bill. That's how you treat someone whose food YOU burned and made wait for a re-do? Nah, your service is marginal and you don't take care of people correctly. Why only two stars when I actually love this pizza? Service. I've been eating this pizza two or three times a year for 20 years and the last couple years I have to prepare myself ahead of time for the attitudes. Tonight we were treated like an inconvenience. The owner was most especially rude (per usual as we aren't regulars or known). We had to go to the bar to get our own drink refills. The waitress only checked on us once and it was blatantly obvious she was pushing us to leave. She was in such a huge hurry to clear or table she actually HIT a small child on the head with the pizza pan after removing it from our table. She apologized to the child but, maybe if she had some help it would not have happened. Not a single employee had a smile on their face, not one. I still LOVE the pizza though. I walked past the restaurant on the sidewalk and read their hours on the door, thinking I'd like to check the place out for dinner in the future, only to hear a voice behind me a moment later yelling in a very condescending tone that the restaurant was closed and that I should not even think about approaching the door. I later learned that this rude person is the owner of this establishment. Don't worry, Tony - keep closing a half hour early and yelling at people who dare walk past the building - you'll never see my face in your restaurant, or that of anyone who takes my advice about where to eat in bloomington! I went to Lucca Grill for dinner tonight and I am allergic to Tomatoes so I asked for my usual Alfredo Pizza (basically Alfredo sauce instead of tomato sauce for the base). For the past 3 times I have been able to get an Alfredo based Pizza but this time I was denied. Something apparently happened and they don't do Alfredo based Pizzas anymore. I have been coming to Lucca Grill since I was little, it was one of the few places that would accommodate my allergy. Please try and fix this so I can enjoy pizza again! read more

Never have I ever been so disappointed in a restaurant. Service was awful, and the manager was beyond rude. The food was decent, but nothing came out on time. We were supposed to get salads and breadsticks, which we had to ask for multiple times only to receive a few salads halfway through dinner. I think it's fantastic that they have gluten free pizza and pasta. However, gf pasta noodles have to be removed from boiling water more quickly so they don't fall apart. I was literally served a bowl of mush. The noodles were in 1" pieces and all stuck together in tasteless, unappetizing clumps. The meat sauce, which the extremely kind waitress described as "finer" than their other sauces was pretty tasteless and had a large piece of gristle in it. Also sampled cheese gf pizza. It was sweet and chewy. Not my idea of a good pie at all. I give 2 stars for the helpful waitress and for the fact that they are obviously trying. I like the divey atmosphere. This is a good choice in an area that while improving, is still full of chains. This place has been around for 75 years, great tin ceilings and old-school atmosphere. I have the misfortune of being in town and eating here at peak times, so I am usually stuck at the bar. While that may make things cramped, it usaully means better service. Thin crust pizza is the go-to thing here (salads I have had are forgettable). I am a fan of the nicely seasoned sausage, and the cheesecake with strawberries, if not homemade (not sure), is of good quality. Noise lvel can be high, but family and solo diner friendly. The food at Lucca Grill has always been better than average for me. I read with great interest Amy C's review and I have to say I do not love the service at Lucca. The building is historic as is the bar--however, the main dining area is very crowded. I don't know if its a good thing or bad to be sent upstairs to the overflow dining area. It is much more spacious, but they spent exactly $0 on trying to make that space as comfortable and appealing as the downstairs. That room upstairs is an embarassment. read more

This place is great. The atmosphere on the first floor/bar area is rustic and cool. The second floor of the establishment boasts a cozy and homey environment. The pizza is why you go to Lucca. The crust is fantastic and the style of their pies puts it on the list as one of the better joints in blono. For a comfortable meal with your family or an inexpensive date night out, this place provides their guests with delicious food served by a personable, hard working staff. Make a reservation though because it gets busy on the weekends. It's a go to for my girlfriend and I. If you're going for the first time and you don't order a pizza, I don't know what to tell you. Stop getting cute and just order what they're known for. I'm sure their italian dishes are fine, but why bother? The pizza is the star of the show. Going to Lucca and not getting pizza is like going to Six Flags, skipping the rides and just go to the snack bar. If going for dinner, call ahead to see if you can get a spot downstairs. That's where you'll get the full effect of Lucca and it's old-school charm. The upstairs is pretty sterile. One of the best pints you'll get in all of town and the service is always friendly, fast and if you're lucky, a little sassy. Best thin crust you'll find anywhere in a 100 mile radius. I love Lucca - best thin crust in town - and it's usually my first recommendation when I have guests visiting from out of town. This past weekend, I had company in town and suggested Lucca as a local treat. We called ahead for a table, and were glad we thought of it because the place was packed. Fortunately, our table was waiting. It took 90 minutes to get our pizza, which seemed like a lot. Yes, we had appetizers, but overall it felt like we were waiting for ages. The thing that prompted the review, however, is that no one on staff seemed to be watching the door. I saw several people come in, stand by the counter (clearly waiting for someone to point them to a table) and no one on staff ever talked to them or even made eye contact. In one case it looked like a server (dark hair, ponytail, glasses) was making her way over to a couple at the door. She had just cleared a table and was returning items to their places along the bar. Finally she dropped off a pizza tray, looked at the couple who was waiting (and clearly thought she was coming to talk to them) and then turned her back and walked away! This couple immediately walked out, as did three others I saw try to get the staff's attention in the 2 hours I was there. Yes, the place was very busy, but the staff should at least acknowledge and TALK to the people who walk in! Anyway, the food is amazing and usually the staff is great. I was just really surprised at my experience this weekend and hope this doesn't mean the place is going downhill. read more

I ordered the toasted meat ravioli appetizer and wasn't impressed, it's pretty flavorless. The pizza however was GREAT! It's very thin crust, and the sauce and toppings were yummy. The mushrooms are fresh not canned, and they used fresh not powdered garlic. The pepperoni has just the right amount of spice. The only other negative thing I experienced was my servers mouth. She began talking to the two pizza makers and was complaining about some other employee, which you DO NOT DO in front of customers. Then she used the f*** word and I was not happy about that but I let it go because I wasn't interested in arguing with her or management. Enjoyed a delicious thin crust pizza, saus & mushroom, w a nice Merlot. The crust was amazing, I joked it's like biting into air, as there seems to be an air pocket between the top and bottom of it which is quite unique. Zesty sauce not really sweet but mighty tasty! Was Monday evening this week, place was jam-packed w folks enjoying good company and wonderful food. The Great Baldini, whose portrait hovers above the bar, opened this gem over 50 years ago and it's been going strong since. He did it right, and there's even a pizza named after him. The night I visited, was lucky enough to enjoy the music of a local group playing fiddle and Irish tunes, and also met some nice folks including Marie from Michigan and a couple from Chicagoland. This is my favorite pizza of all time. I have 30+ years of pizza-eating experience, and nothing has ever topped Lucca. I live in Chicago, but deep-dish pizza does nothing for me. I have always preferred a thin, crispy crust. Thin? Easy to find. Crispy, flaky, cracker-like texture? Not so much. My anniversary is coming up in October and I've told my husband I want a trip down to Bloomington just for this pizza. Seriously. Get in the car by 11, be down there by 1:30 or so, have lunch, drive back home. It's totally worth it to me. Even my husband, a Chicago-style pizza lover, was completely impressed. We were in Bloomington on business Saturday and decided on pizza for supper. We went to Lucca Grill based on Yelp reviews. The building is downtown and very charming. It was about 5:30 and most of the tables were full or reserved, but Tony said there was a table for two left upstairs. We trooped up the steep stairs and were seated promptly. The fire escape door was propped open with a fan in front of the door -- AC did not appear to be working upstairs. The room was more stuffy than hot. Our waitress came quickly and took our drink orders. It took her a bit to get back to take our dinner orders, but the pizzas came fairly quickly after we ordered. My husband had the A La Baldini with no cheese (lactose intolerant) and he enjoyed it. I thought the toppings were sort of skimpy, but it was his pizza. I had the Create Your Own with Ham, Bacon, and Black Olives (and cheese). It was very good. I'm partial to thin crusted pizza and theirs is perfect. The place was really full by the time we finished and it took the waitress too long to bring our bill and then pick up the credit card. Other tables seemed to be visiting and enjoying the wait, but it was hot in there by then and I was ready to head out!! We would go back....probably not in the summer, though, unless we are positive the AC is working well. read more
