Illinois Air Team - Go on a weekday around lunchtime, and there'll be almost no wait! Avoid weekends, obviously.

Very courteous and quick service. I have also used the on premise tag renewal office around the side of the building. Easy and efficient as well.

STAYING IN COMPLIANCE…read more It's not exciting but car emissions testing is a state requirement, so you gotta do it. I got mail the other day informing me that my plates were due to expire soon, which necessitated a trip to the nearest Illinois Air Team to (hopefully) give my ride a clean bill of health. I visited the one in Joliet at noon on a Friday when the estimated wait time was 4min. The emissions tech was nice; that job must get old in a hurry, so kudos to him for staying upbeat and getting me on my way. There's a small side building off to the right where you can renew your license plate sticker, and that's where I headed. Five people were in front of me, one of whom was arguing with an employee over their failed emissions test. Hey man, it's not THEIR fault your car is a jalopy held together by air fresheners & bungee cords! This guy got pretty worked up and the mood in that tiny space became tense, at best. Should you choose to get your sticker here instead of through Secretary of State, they'll charge a $9.50 credit/debit card transaction fee. Since plastic is the ONLY thing they accept, there's no way around this surcharge of ten bucks (by say, writing a check or paying in pennies). * TL;DR * This review could be broken into two parts: the actual emissions test, and the license plate sticker renewal process. The first part was great, a solid 5*. The second part took a while and drags the overall down to 4*. That side building gets surprisingly hot in the summer, and I'm not a fan of the whopping $10 processing fee....I have enough taxes and sh*t in my life, I could do without this. Aside from those quibbles, this emissions testing site is just fine.

Illinois Emissions Testing - I got my emissions tested on a rainy Monday in late May around noon, only had to wait 2 minutes

MOTORING ALONG The…read moreair team in Bedford Park does their best to get your car's emissions tested quickly. When renewing a license plate sticker in Illinois, you'll first have to take your car to a Vehicle Emissions Testing site. There's 11 stations throughout the city/suburbs as well as some self-serve kiosks which I didn't know about until now. Most locations also have a counter inside to buy said sticker. This testing facility is tough to find, it's tucked away in an industrial area about 1/2 mile west of Cicero Ave. There's plenty of testing lanes to pull into, so if you encounter a wait, it should be a brief one. The guy who checked my car gave me piratey truck driver vibes (and I mean that in a good way). While the testing itself only took 3 minutes, the wait for a sticker was quintuple that--I waited nearly 10 minutes outside in a drizzle plus another 5 inside. The plate renewal fee was $151, plus a $10 service charge which I'm not a fan of. Maybe that helps pay the wages of the folks who work here? Maybe it's just Illinois being greedy. * TL;DR * 11 years - and 100K miles - later my car still passes an emissions test, thankfully. Illinois state law requires all cars & trucks to get a checkup every two years. Speaking of which, when was the last time *I* had a checkup? Between the leaking fluids and the flashing indicator lights, I really ought to have someone go under my hood and make sure things are hunky-dory. Emissions testing is far from sexy, but it's gotta be done if you want to keep driving that jalopy of a car (I'm talking to you, owner of the beige '96 Mercury Sable missing its front bumper).
