Came for the Jazz Jam event hosted on Wednesdays. Music teachers intertwine their students into different "bands" to showcase their musical talents. This is such a great event and space. Check the website to reserve seating; this event is free. The Lowdown offers a full bar and very light snacks for purchase. Enjoy and have fun at their other highlighted events!

    Love their marquee!

Live music/entertainment is one thing I'll never take for granted after the pandemic. There's no replacement for it and I'm extremely glad it's back at venues like this one. This is the underground bar lounge below Duet Restaurant, formerly knows as Duet Jazz Club, in the historic Archer building. Now it's under a new name and it has come back better than ever! The space itself was created as a listening room so the acoustics are amazing. It has a speakeasy vibe with low ceilings, lifting and tons of ambiance. It is also very intimate, full capacity is 100 (including staff, musicians, performers, etc.). This makes it perfect for live music (mostly jazz, instrumental, soul, folk, but also salsa and more!) stand up, jam sessions, mic nights and other special performances. This also means you should look at their event calendar online and get tickets to the shows you want to attend to beforehand online. You don't want to get turned away or have to wait for someone to leave to get in! They have a great selection of drinks and food items as well. Their French 75 is my favorite and they have small food items including sushi from In The Raw!

If you are interested in live music, lowdown is the place to go. Lowdown is an underground jazz club that was designed, excavated, and constructed to be a listening room. It has exquisite acoustics, delicious drinks, and fairly good service.

Happened to be our 28th wedding anniversary, and didn't have reservations, but were able to be seated immediately at the bar, with Brook(e)? as our bartender. First, the outdoor alley entrance is fun/non-assuming. Once in, the decor is moody and perfectly dark/speak-easy-ish, much like a private underground club. Very impressive. We had cocktails/wine and ordered the Wedge Salad and the Ceaser Salad. Both were amazing, but my husband stated that the Ceaser was the best he had ever had. My Wedge Salad had bountiful amounts of flavorful blue cheese and amazing bacon chunks that made this the best salad I had ever had. We then ordered the petite filet (Medium) and Brussel sprouts and put a chocolate cake on order "to go". Highly recommend all of the above. The chocolate cake is "go big or go home" for sure. It hardly fit in two combined to go boxes. It was chocolatey, not overly dense, and the frosting complimented it perfectly! We cannot give enough high praise to Brook for the recommendations and for just making it a super fun vibe. I would gladly book a flight from San Diego just to go to dinner again at this place! Thanks for the special night!

Now, they blew the service on this night. Totally missed being our salads...before the entrees were already coming to the table. Open way late for dinner...that's awesome.

I ordered apricot iced tea, the vegan fried chicken sandwich, and pineapple upside-down cake. I don't normally like chicken sandwiches that much, but this was really good. And the highlight was getting to choose any of the salads on the menu as the side salad that comes with it. I had the hearts of palm salad with vegan cheese instead of the usual parmesan. It was delicious! I also got to try the cauliflower wings and a bite of the Korean BBQ tofu sandwich. I liked that sandwich too, but not as much. I do like the way they fried the tofu, but it seemed different than what was described on the menu. It seemed just deep fried, but not battered. My only complaint is the layout of the building and the lack of directional signage. I didn't park in the parking lot, so I didn't know to enter from the back and I ended up on a long confusing walk both outside and inside the building before I finally reached the dining room.

Seated promptly without a reservation. Nice vibe, retro theme. Tyler, our server was wonderfully engaging, made good food recommendations, really appeared to be a good human, and made a good meal better ... Salmon cakes appetizer were a nice start, the salads were memorable -- fresh and refreshing -- and my crusted salmon was a completely satisfying entree and I loved the crunch (good portion size, great sauce, and accompaniments). And, Tyler made a great pot of coffee ... strong, rich flavor. I thought it was excellent value. Thanks Tyler!
