Upon the recommendation of someone I know, I popped into Lovecrumb for a quick start to my day. I came in figuring I'd order a cinnamon bun and a hot beverage -- which is exactly what I was able to get! There's a bunch of tables inside, although they can tend to be quite busy. I sat at a little table next to the window and was brought my order. The cinnamon bun was really soft and had a lovely flavor. The chai was sweet and didn't have too much spice but I enjoyed it! Overall the vibe of the cafe itself is really cute and they have plenty of baked goods, hot and cold beverages, and savory options to appeal to a reasonable palate. I've been back a couple more times since this occasion to try more baked goods and get a hot chocolate! I've always been very pleased by my experience and will continue to return! read more

MY RATING: 3.5 I found Lovecrumbs to be a fun and cute place. It's great for reading a book on a rainy day, grabbing a sweet vegan treat, or catching up with an old friend. As long as you don't stay overstay your welcome, that is. ;) The OAT MILK CAPPUCCINO was frothy and creamy, but overall it was just okay. Not the best, not the worst, right in the middle. I loved the icing on the VEGAN CARROT CAKE. It was smooth and sweet, but not too sweet. It also had a pop of citrus. As for the cake, I was underwhelmed. It was lacking in carrot flavor and was denser than I'd prefer. However, I did enjoy the big chunks of nuts and raisins. EXTRA: Super cute decor They have a retail section in the front that sells coffee, jewelry, mugs, pens, vitamins, etc. Friendly service Decent size space and amount of tables The bathroom is downstairs "Weekends are lap top free" that's what the sign says, at least Not sure how I feel about this sign: "If busy, please limit your stay to an hour.. thanks for being cool." The first time I came to Lovecrumbs was years ago. It was one of the highlights of my trip then: it was such a warm, welcoming, chill place. I tucked away by a window in the back with a book and some tea and a giant scone with butter and jam for what felt like ages, and it was lovely. I got a piece of cake to bring home with me, and that was absolutely lush too! Fast forward a couple years and the vibe here is totally different. It was so crowded and noisy that people were standing over each other at their tables... hanging out? waiting?... I don't know, I've never been to a cafe that had a (claustrophobic) "standing room only" vibe. The staff seemed more rushed and less excited to tell you about their cakes. And the cakes themselves were pretty dry and flavorless. My partner and I each got a piece of totally different cakes -- they tasted the same. I felt so badly and kept apologizing to my partner when we left because what we experienced wasn't anything like I had built it up to be. I'm hoping I came on an extremely off day for them. But when I come back to Edinburgh, this time I won't make this a "must stop". read more

I was looking up tea room & cafe local treasures when I came across this place and the photos gave me a strong incentive to come here. I had planned out my day basically according to where I wanted to eat, when I started off at Clarinda's tea room first thing in the morning for a light breakfast (near Hollyrood Palace) before hiking up the pathway adjacent to the path that leads to Arthur's Seat summit (which I did yesterday and did not want to do that one again). After the long hike I figured I had burned off enough energy to be able to have cake, so I made my way over to Lovecrumbs, at one point using Google maps because I couldn't figure out where it was. I even passed it without realizing until I reopened Google maps and it told me to turn around. I finally found the store, only to discover that its CASH ONLY! And of course I didn't have much cash left on me, so I did what any crazy food lover would do and made my way back to my hotel in New Town next to Mark's & Spencer's and exchanged currency there. Now I was finally ready to trek back to Lovecrumbs- that's how dedicated I was to trying it before leaving Edinburgh!!! Got back to Lovecrumbs around 12:40 and with the help & advice from the friendly employee, I ordered a slice of the Rose & Pistachio cake and a cup of Violet Petal tea (the employee let me smell the dry tea and it had a strong but amazing scent!). The cake was pistachio and the frosting between the layers and on top was lightly rose-flavored. Now I normally don't like floral food and drinks but the combination of the flavors and how light the floral-ness was done well here. The cake was a little dry (but so far my experience showed me that all the cakes here are), but overall good. Now on to the best part of my afternoon snack (in lieu of lunch)- the tea was amazing! It was definitely different from the teas I'm used to and was great in a unique but delicious way. So overall a good experience, but again as a reminder to tourists- CASH ONLY! Lovecrumbs is the definition of eclectic and tasty coffee/cake house. Located around the corner from the Grassmarket, this location is a haven from the more touristy shops. We ordered at the counter next to the beautiful cakes and retail items then had a seat at the table near the window. We ordered an almond and fig cake, chocolate peanut butter cake and some lattes. The cakes were incredibly moist, large portion, and amazing flavor. Absolutely the best cake that we had in Scotland. It went perfectly with the lattes. The lattes were bold and flavorful. I opted for the cardamom and rose one which was extra tasty. While this location is a bit pricey, it is absolutely worth a stop. This is the best cake shop in the entire world. I insist that there has never been and never will be a better bakery! So, yeah. You should probably stop in. Lovecrumbs always has a good variety of fun, creative, and adorable cakes. I've taken many friends here for cake and coffee and each was blown away. If you have the chance, I highly recommend vanilla and raspberry or bramble and rose. The cakes are fluffy and light and the icing is creamy and flavorful and amazing! Can't hype it up enough. You'll never struggle to find a place in Edinburgh to stop for cake and a hot drink - but you could certainly do a lot worse than stumbling in to Lovecrumbs - which is what I did at the start of a busy day at the festival. Far enough from breakfast for me to want something to sustain me through (it's really hard fitting proper meals in between shows!) I opted for a cappuccino and my default carrot cake. Very tasty and obviously fresh cake, well made coffee and everything was brought over to my table (I'm clumsy and prone to spillage so this is a very useful service for me). Both the decor and crockery in Lovecrumbs is mismatched, but not in a try-hard way - it just felt totally chill, like hanging out at a friends house. I didn't even notice you could sit in the window (literally, some cushions and a wee table on the low, wide window ledge) until someone scrambled in, and I was very jealous of their premium seat. I could happily come back here with a good book and a few hours to spare. And seeing as I'm very keen to try their custom hot chocolates (Orange, Chilli & clove sounds too appealing to pass up) I don't think it'll be tooling before you find me there, curled up on their sofa with a dog eared tome. read more

While the space is small there is enough seating to he comfortable, even if my friend and I had to share tables with other customers at one point. Awwwwww man! Located a few minutes away from Grassmarket, Lovecrumbs has got to be the most darling wee cafe bakery ever! I fell in love the second I stepped in through those old wooden doors! This place is pretty big, has a lot of seating/tables (some are community tables so you'd have to share with other customers) and gives out a very rustic vibe, with the wardrobe cake display, mixed up furniture and upcycled piano to be made into a table! Like an antique shop turned bakery! Be aware that this place gets crowded over the weekend! Anyway, Lovecrumbs has a selection of many interesting and beautifully decorated cakes! I tried the lavender and black pepper cake (I know, what a unique combo!), and it was ... so strange ... but I loved it! It was a funny experience eating something as fragrant as lavender and then biting into a black pepper seed ... wow ... haha that was 3.40quid a slice! I also tried a latte and a hot chocolate. I'm not a big fan of their coffee because it's SOOO strong! They use Steampunk coffee (which I think has a very deep and strong roast) and generally serve double shots. Their hot chocolate was good though! Def would go back for that! But anyway, they're not known for drinks, mostly cakes so just stick to what they're famous for! Hehe Did I mention they have wifi? Love crumbs is delicious. I really like how the cakes focus on the flavor rather than being sweet. I don't' like too much frosting so the minimal designs of the cake strike the right balance. Warning though this place does get crowded and it does become difficult to find a place. Plus, they have some usual cakes but the flavored rotate so you can try something different each day. It's and Edinburgh cafe that everyone must try. It's different and oh so tasty. read more

I love what they have done with the decor here, stripped it back and revealed some of the beautiful original features of the building. I also love the furnishing and cutlery. You can tell that they put a lot of love and effort into it. If you are lucky you might get the surprise frog mug. I wonder what other delights they have in those cupboards. The selection of cake is amazing and the portions are huge. They seem to be very popular too and I will have to get there earlier than 5.30 PM the next time, I'm desperate to try their raspberry & white chocolate cake and their Vicky sponge. The Carot cake we shared was delicious and the portion massive, perfect for a growing lad with a sweet tooth like me. We also shared a slice of chocolate tart, amazing and highly recommended, perfect with coffee. The coffee here is great, I must remember to ask where it's on my next visit if I can divert my attention from the cakes. The staff are very friendly and passionate about cake. I have now been to Lovecrumbs twice and reserved my judgement after my first visit, as I was extremely disappointed, considering the great reviews it has and the price of the cake - brownies and scones from about £2.50, but most (large) cake slices are about £3.40!! My first cake, which my friend had also, was a Rosemary, Fig & Vanilla cake. It was less rosemary and fig, and more/practically just vanilla. Hence, it was not the out-of-the-ordinary cake we were expecting and it was even slightly dry to boot. I returned to give Lovecrumbs another go and was a bit scared to go for something different or something that could potentially be dry again, so closely inspected the cakes before going for a tried and true carrot cake, that contained lots of dried fruit and nuts and of course, yummy cream cheese icing. I was very happy with this cake, although was a bit of a shame I wasn't confident to go with a more unusual flavour. My friend did though, going for Beetroot & Rose cake, which she also chose because it looked moister than some of the others and she thoroughly enjoyed it too. Our accompanying drinks were very nice - peppermint and white hot chocolate, and lemongrass and mint tea (could only taste lemongrass though). Both times we visited, the café was packed, having to wait for a table on the second occasion and it was rather noisy inside. They have an eclectic mix of furniture and the many cakes are uniquely displayed on tables, shelves and cubby holes. I am glad I went back to base my judgement on 2 visits, however I don't think Lovecrumbs is a place I would necessarily choose to go again. read more

If I could take a cute and interesting boy on a date anywhere it would be here. We'd order ice coffee and cakes, he'd offer to pay. Then we'd sit at the front window, everyone who passed by could see us enjoying our food and eachothers company. That is the exact scenario I imagined when I walked into love crumbs. On a more serious note, the food was really good. I recommend the grilled cheese sandwich and the ice coffee. Lovecrumbs does such a delightful variety of *incredible* cakes that one would think that their coffee would be average. Nope, this some of the best coffee I have had in Edinburgh, with milk served in the quirkiest little fox-shaped milk jug. I had a sweet ritual in Edinburgh (since it's so cold and miserable out) - have something hot like a cappuccino or hot chocolate before I head back to my hotel to end my day. This place fit the bill. We loved their shop so much we asked them to do our wedding cakes! The cakes were beautifully decorated with seasonal flowers and fresh fruit and delicious to boot! Months later we still get compliments. They were so easy to work with that I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone! I'd been wanting to go to Lovecrumbs for AGES. I love cake. Love love. As a home baker and a member of my work's prestigious (for us anyway) Cake Club, I'm also a picky cake eater. When Lovecrumbs opened it looked like the perfect antidote to the leagues of mediocre cake being served across the city. It kind of is, but with some notable exceptions. There are *several* different types of cake on offer. This is fabulous for variety, but as the cakes are creatively listed on a blackboard, you're left guessing which cake is which when faced with ordering. Can you ask a member of staff? Sure. Would I have rather just had each cake labeled? Absolutely. In addition to the cakes you can get coffee and tea. Being a hipsterly inclined business, you pay quite a lot for a teeeeeeeeeensy amount of (high quality) tea or coffee (the tea is served sans teapot, so you get one cup. End of story.), and then go sit at a salvaged/upcycled table (or piano) wedged in too close to everyone else, resulting in staff knocking you every time they pass and necessitating your table neighbors to actually stand up to let you pass. The cake is of course the reason you've come here, and it's definitely good. Is it better than home-baked? No. Is it better than every other cafe cake I've had? Yes. My recommendation is, if you can't be bothered baking your own, come here and buy cake to take away. Then go have a picnic, and scoff your cake in an upcycle-free environment. read more

Apparently I'm going completely against the grain here, but I have not been impressed by Lovecrumbs on any of the three occasions I've visited. Of course, if the vast majority love the place, I'm sure it's still worth giving it a try! One thing to warn about for anyone considering a visit. You can get cake at Lovecrumbs, but not soups or sandwiches etc. They are clear about this on their website, so it's not a negative point, but I'm just making sure you're aware. On each occasion as I've arrived, the windows have been heavily steamed up. I'm never a fan of poor ventilation in any eatery. Inside, Lovecrumbs is a very hipster set-up, with a complete mish-mash of furniture. There are tables and chairs, but you can also sit in the window-sill if you prefer. On two visits, I ordered hot drinks- a coffee and a hot chocolate. The coffee was fine, the hot chocolate wasn't nearly hot enough. The other time, I just wanted a Coca Cola. "We don't sell Coca Cola". What? I've found the place to be untidy, and not particularly welcoming to boot. I'm surprised by my experiences, given the amazingly good reviews from virtually everyone else. Maybe I'll try out Lovecrumbs once more to see if I'm being unfair or was just unlucky on the days I visited. read more

Ooh, it's vair nice; all the same I wasn't swept off my feet. Perhaps that's because I didn't partake of their famous cakery when I when - just a hot chocolate. Twas a fine hot chocolate of rose-flavoured goodness, and yes, I shall be listing this review in my list of "reviews where I mention how much I love all things that involve roses". As noted by other reviewers, it's a junkyard haven of a place, full of reclaimed this and upcycled that, and we settled ourselves on a grebby but comfortable sofa. It's a difficult line to walk, I think, though, and it's all about context - namely, if you've got a front window that habitually steams up, that grebby sofa can quickly move from "cutely unselfconscious" to "not out of place in student digs". It's not that it doesn't all hang together, thematically - it's that it hangs together slightly too well. That said, the hot chocolate was great, and if the cakes are as yummy as I'm led to believe next time I go back (for go back I shall), I may well be donating an extra star before too long. So I think this is my third review my opinion has grown and changed over time possible because I'm obsessed with this place ! If I didn't think it was unhealthy to eat cake everyday (and didn't affect my wallet so much) I'd probably be in here 3/4 times a week ;) Luckily for my wait line and wallet I resist ! But you shouldn't !!! Come !! They make the most amazing cake in all of Scotland (ok that broad but it's SOOOO GOOD! ) wonderful flavours and it's always changing! Real ingredient and unique flavour combinations like lavender and coconut , or Rosemary Carmel cake... Which ever you get t will be amazing !!! The brownies are super gooey and rich!!! The coffee is really nice and strong (I am beginning to appreciate the smaller Euro size coffees) , unique teas and fancy hot cocoa (beware the Orange chilli and clove hot coco is really spicy!) I was really disappointed to arrive here on Sunday to find it was shut although it was supposed to be open!? I wouldn't mind so much if I had just randomly turned up but I had emailed a few days previously to see if they take reservations (which they do not). I was told there should be no problem turning up on Sunday and getting a table. It was a wasted journey for me, my two friends, and my friend's child. I had invited a few more people along but they couldn't make it, which is just as well! There wasn't a sign or anything to say why they weren't open. Where to even begin with this incredible business? The food, atmosphere, and friendly mentality of the owners and staff never cease to amaze me. I have spent many days in this shop with delicious baked goods to drool over, a good book, and even better conversation. Recently, I spoke with the owner Hollie about catering my wedding. I thought her brick and mortar locations were impressive but I was blown away by the creativity, sheer culinary imagination, and her willingness to customize my dream menu for our event! Lovecrumbs sounds like a euphemism for something that may require a discreet visit to the pharmacist. Especially given its location, you could be forgiven for thinking that it's a new venue aiming to compete with the Burke and Hare. But fear not. It's part of Edinburgh's growing café culture. In the last couple of years great cafes seem to be springing up in all parts of town, and I think Lovecrumbs has put down a marker for the Westport area. I love Alastair's description of this place as "derelict chic." It's rather reminiscent of Antipodean cafes, lots of mismatched furniture and charity shop crockery. Even the staff are dressed in retro chic. The coffee is good and, while I'm not really a cake person, their selection of cakes looks delicious, especially being presented in an open wardrobe. I was more interested in confirming that they provide that other café essential, free wifi. It's a big space so it's nice and relaxed and the kind of place you can sip your tea or coffee and relax. The bathroom is quirky too, with a pile of actual hand towels for each customer to take one. They don't have many tables so I think they will probably be putting a few more into that space as I can see it getting full regularly. Loads of people were looking in the window when we were there so there's clearly something about this place that draws people in. oh dear, i hope i'm not going to become hated by all the cake lovers and bakeries in edinburgh, but hear me out before i'm you start to boo me. my visit here was due to a birthday cake afternoon celebration and it was lucky that the plan was only to come for cake because that was the only option. seriously, they have no soup, sandwiches, salads, or other savoury delights that help take the edge off the sugar rush. i was actually quite glad i'd eaten a quick lunch before going. they did have one savoury scone, but that would hardly do if someone had come with the intention of having a small lunch with a slice of cake. a bit disappointing and with a shop so large i'm not sure why they don't offer the savoury options.... so a bit disappointed by the lack of savoury options, but i have to say the cakes looked seriously impressive. what i did like about this place was the variety of cake and brownie options that were a bit different than the normal. they had a chocolate cake, but they also had an orange and rosemary cake and a ginger and rose cake. they also had carmel chocolate brownies and parmesan and sundried tomato scones and some other delights that i fail to remember so many days later. i was also rather impressed with their tea choices. the normal breakfast blend but also a lovely violet black tea that was thoroughly enjoyable. the tea was served in lovely tea cups with an extra flask of hot water for top ups. very convenient and appreciated from a chain tea drinker like me! seriously, i can never just have one cup... now the cakes and this is where the three star rating was confirmed. my orange and rosemary cake was delightlful. it was orange-y and had a hit of rosemary but as i neared the end of the slice it got rather sugary. i think this came from the frosting and it might have been nice if there was a bit more rosemary to cut through the sweetness. i also tried a small forkful of the caramel chocolate brownie and oh dear, did someone accidently add an extra bag of sugar to this??? it was so incredibly sweet that my tiny forkful gave me a sugar rush and a bit of a tummy ache at the same time. i also think the enamel on my teeth started to dissolve from the huge sugar hit. poor Kelly F couldn't even finish it after passing it around for everyone to taste. i know people like cakes and brownies and other sweet things but the greatest disappointment of lovecrumbs was how overly sugary everything seemed. i just can't eat cake that tastes like i'm only eating a bag of sugar with a tiny hint of another flavour. so i don't think i'll be making a return visit unless i'm told things are less sugary.... read more

Coffee and cake, in a stripped back, bare, mismatched room - it's very hip and cool, but friendly and a pleasant place to spend an hour or an afternoon. There's just a few tables dotted about, all differently shaped and hard to choose between, and cakes are served from an old wooden wardrobe in the corner. (I keep looking in my wardrobe at home, but there's no cake...) Everything looked delicious, from the fluffy scones to the dark, rich mint and chocolate cake.The cakes are served on mixed-up, charity-shop plates and brought to your table by staff in funky clothes - I did feel I looked slightly too uncool! Especially as there seems to be an option to climb into the window and eat sitting on cushions* - I think I'd have to dress up for that... If you're after a calorie and caffeine hit around the Grassmarket area, this is the place to go. Free wifi, too. *I would check this is really allowed, before trying it - I don't want anyone to get thrown out! read more

Coffee was strong, just how we liked it! The interior was beautiful and the cakes had unique flavours and were absolutely delicious. I'm a huge fan of blondies and the ones served here were slightly on the dry side, but apart from that were the best ones I'd ever tasted. It was very crowded when we went so we had to share a table with some stranger, but besides that it was an overall delightful experience! Highly recommend. read more

I've been spending a lot of time here lately. The seating is not that comfortable, but I like the people that hang out here. There is always someone else working on a computer, so I don't feel like a token writer in the place. There are usually a couple of gals reading, some cute couple sitting in the window (as the window display, what a fabulous idea), and plenty of smiles to go around. And why not? The coffee here is really, really good. My eyes bulge a little with a cappuccino, and it's not a bad thing, and plus they don't really it's only how I feel, so don't be afraid to come by for fear of seeing eyeballs poking out. They also have 2-3 gf options, so when I feel naughty, in the cake kind of way, I can indulge. The polenta one is a bit dry, compared to other polenta cakes I've had. I only ate a couple bites. The gf chocolate torte I had once, now there was something I cowered over, using my fork to brush away a friend's attempt to try a bite (he takes huge bites, ok?). The staff are aloof, but when I bring my dishes up they smile big. So, it's hit and miss. read more

For me, and I am an expert in such matters, this is the coffee/tea room of my dreams. If I could give up my 'real' life to live my dream it would be to open my very own lovecrumbs. The space is roomy and shabby in that way that makes you feel at home. We sat at the old piano, somewhere disappointed that the window seats (literally in the window alcove) were already occupied. We drank one coffee and one tea...I was the winner with a sort of open plan tea bag skewered to rest over the vintage china tea cup along with a flask of hot water so I could top myself up. What could be more perfect? Well, a slice of apricot and almond cake was the finishing touch for me and the chocolate and peanut slice seemed to help the coffee slip down for him. Shelves of cakes? A foggy window seat? Savoury-sweet flavour pairings??? Yes to all. Lovecrumbs is my top destination for cakes. I don't eat cakes or pastries very often but when I do, I come here. I've had some amazing slices - lavender and coconut, rosemary and caramel - and always enjoy the atmosphere. Pretty, delicious cakes and tray bakes and brownies and nice drinks. Ticks all the boxes. read more
