Just need to say, this place is not JUST cupcake heaven, it also has delicious..delicious lunches! I was lucky enough to grab a table here during lunch time last week. Their daily soups look awesome, sandwiches are hearty and salads are fantastic! Usually salads can be quite disappointing, but I highly recommend the chicken salad. The chicken is in a pesto marinade, and there are lots of pine nuts (...love..) in the dish. If you aren't a fan of that combo, I wouldn't think that salad would be your cup of tea. ...Speaking of tea, this place has a great selection of different teas. I had an orange flavoured one and it went very well with lunch. All of their teas are of a high quality. If you are feelin' lucky, try to get a seat here for lunch! p.s I love their mini cupcakes!! Perfect size for a little treat.

Lunch and a cupcake - well, when in Rome... In preparation of the Big Big Sing St Andrews event that was happening today, the SR and I went to fuel up in Stockbridge (oh yeah and maybe peruse the earthly delights of the market while we were there) and Cuckoo Bakery just lured us both in (ok, probably more me going 'yes! There! I have no idea if they do food!). There was no time to Yelp. There was only time to go. Luckily for us - apart from very pretty looking cupcakes, we were able to chow down on some carrot & parsnip soup (very homey-style soup) and the humus and roasted veg sandwich. I liked the soup, the SR liked the sandwich; we shared both. I would have preferred the roast vegetables slightly warm, rather than fridge cold, I think that would have aced the sandwich. Both the sandwich bread and the soup bread were both fantastic (although I failed to find out who provided the baked goods on site here). So, it's a solid 3.5 stars for the savoury. The cupcake (raspberry and white chocolate) sent me straight back to my childhood - a like for like for birthday cakes as a kid (whether they were as light and fresh as the cupcake today... I'll leave that up to the good ole memory banks to decide). The raspberry jam was lovely and sharp - a nice contrast to the cupcake. I'll be honest, I don't tend to get overly excited about cupcakes - to me, they tend to be glorified fairy cakes with excessive sickly icing on top - but Cuckoo Bakery elevates this sugar overload and takes the sugar level down a notch, leaving behind a much more elegant experience. Cuckoo Bakery, No. 1 cupcake baker in town? For me, it's a resounding yes.

    Peanut Butter Milkshake!

Cupcakes at their best, so they get 5 big cakey wakey stars from me! I don't come here often enough, but if I lived closer, I reckon I'd be in here all the time. Its a lovely wee place and I think could do with a bigger venue now its so popular! Aside the cakes, I've also eaten the quiche, home made and served on a fresh salad, very substantial plateful for a greedy girl like me - so full up that day, we had to take our cupcakes as take-away! My companion also indulged in a peanut butter milkshake with lunch and she downed it until the point of telling me...'I'm feeling a little bit sick now' but she did say it was exceptionally good. I had a sneaky taste myself and have to say it was!! I'm just not a huge milkshake fan, but for those who are, please do try it!! If you haven't been yet, its definitely worth a visit, even just to get a take-away cupcake, everything comes boxed up so no chance of squashing these babies on the way home (that is if you can actually take it home, before eating it!) and if you return the box for a re-fill, you are given a discount! Who said recycling can't be fun and fattening ;o)

    I. Love. This. Place. That is not an overstatement. Because only true love can lead an American - nay a Californian - to brave the Scottish weather and walk down Dundas Street from Marchmont. The basic stripped down cake recipes and buttercreams at Cuckoo's is nothing special. What makes Cuckoo's unique is their bold and innovative flavours. Ginger cupcakes on St. Patrick's Day, Grapefruit Meringue, a 'Kamikaze Cupcake' with a lime vodka filling, and my all time favorite: white chocolate cake with lavender filling. (I still think about it despite having had it mother's day 2012) Don't get me wrong the classics here are amazing too. The Chocolate cupcake is so moist and decadent, the Raspberry White Chocolate classic and delicious, the Lemon buttercream tart and delicious. There is, however, one classic that I feel has missed the mark for me, and without nailing it I can't in clear conscience give it five stars; and that is the Red Velvet. Red Velvet is rich, moist, and - if done right, naturally red from the mixture of vinegar and cocoa powder. Cuckoo's Red Velvet is artificially red and dry. I also don't taste that decadent cocoa flavour that I do in the Chocolate cupcake. Despite that one setback, I highly recommend Cuckoo's. It has the best cupcakes in the UK (not counting the Red Velvet)!

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a fan of a cupcake (or three!) so it's no surprise that I have visited Cuckoo's a few times now. This was my second visit to their shop on Dundas Street. The shop is beautifully designed with it's modern take on a vintage tea shop. The cuckoo theme runs throughout and the walls are adorned with hand-made art. We find a table for two and peruse the menu. We're too late for breakfast (damn, as it looks delicious!) but I go for the Tuscan Bean Soup and David chooses a warm cheese and herb scone. They also offer sandwiches, salads and jacket potatoes. As for the cupcakes we are spoiled for choice with a menu of at least 12 different flavours. After much deliberation I go for the gluten-free banana and white chocolate. David being David goes for the Chocolate Chocolate. The soup was delicious. Fresh and hearty, definitely homemade. David's scone was lovely and light but full of cheesy goodness. The cupcakes. Well they're just awesome! Moist, soft sponge and delicious toppings that they are not shy about pilling on. All beautifully and uniquely decorated. A lovely little place for a good cup of tea and great cake! Cheers, Amy x

    PB Pretzel cupcake

To be honest, I am not a big fan of cupcakes. I only get them when I am REALLY craving sugar, but now the rules have changed. It was a lovely sunny day,and I was on my way to a sunbath at royal botanic garden, but on the way I passed Cuckoo's Cupacakes, and instantly remembered my friend's boast on how great they were. So I had to pop in. "Do you have anything peanut butter?" (although I'm not a huge fan of cupcakes, I am fanatical about Peanut Butter...) The staff replied: "it's your lucky day" and then introduced me to my new love, cuckoo's peanut butter pretzel cupcake! So How good is it? Well, I kinda devoured it. The PB frosting and the chocolate cake is nicely balanced. The cake is superbly moist. Most importantly, it was not too sweet; everything was just right. The sun, the green grass, the flowers, my Americano & PB pretzel cupcake...a damn good time. TiPs: On a date: Don't avoid all the frosting by using a fork and or spoon. Just enjoy and get it all over your mouth&cheeks, if you dare.

Cuckoo's Bakery is about as cute as a tiny ginger kitten, with a blue bow and a bell collar, in a meadow, full of daisies, chasing after pink butterflies and heart shaped bubbles. Ok, so I am not very good with girly things, but basically what I am trying to say is this place is A-dorable! It is maybe a little wee bit of a walk from Princes Street, and I was not too sure what to expect when I arrived. When I got there I spied a cheeky wee seat by the window and plonked myself down in it. I was then handed a menu, one side all the twelve different flavours of cupcakes, the other - savoury food!? That's right, they do that too! Not just a one trick pony here. It sounded lovely, but sadly I had already had lunch. So I ended up going for a Strawberry Cheesecake Cupcake and a skinny Cappuccino. Yummers. The cake was lovely, not too sweet, and they are all baked freshly every morning, and you can tell!! Coffee was good, I sipped away whilst occasionally reading my book, but mainly staring out the window watching the world go by. This is a great spot to do that. Inside the cafe is lovely too, nice and bright, and very homely. You do feel like you are sitting in someones kitchen/front room, and I quite like that. Price wise, I paid £4.55, which is reasonable enough and the staff are nice and welcoming. A lovely little place to stop by for a sugary treat.

    my special birthday cupcakes
    Julia F.

Cuckoo's did something to make my birthday above and beyond special. I was studying abroad in Scotland and was very much missing celebrating my birthday with my boyfriend in the States. He communicated through email with Cuckoo's to send me some special cupcakes. On the afternoon of my birthday, 6 deliciously amazing cupcakes wrapped in the prettiest box with a handwritten birthday card were delivered to my door. Not every company will go out of their way to make someone feel special, especially not when the business end of the transaction was from across the Atlantic! I appreciated all of the little touches, and only wished I still lived in Edinburgh so I could frequent Cuckoo's.

The Best Cupcake In Scotland? That's the award Cuckoo's received and what lured me into their bakery. That and the Yes/No cupcakes for Scottish Independence. I didn't vote in the independence debate, but I did sample the best cupcake. It was a raspberry almond confection with a mountain of frosting on top. Alas it didn't give my sweet tooth an orgasism, which is what I'd expect for the best cupcake in the whole country. Still a nice little place and you should check it out. I'd go back even if it was just to buy a Yes cupcake.

We heard this place was the place to go for cupcakes in Edinburgh and boy is that true! delicious! We had a lovely sticky toffee cupcake which was the best sticky toffee cupcake I've had yet- mostly bc it actually tasted like sticky toffee cake with the dates but was moist and had delicious icing!! We also had the Black bottom cupcake which was Belgian chocolate bottom with a cheese cake on top, also delicious! Now to be fair we need to come back and get a more normal cake cupcake to judge the cake aspect more. But we will definitely be coming back. They lost a star bc the teas we ordered were WEAK! And it wasn't about how long we let it brew b/c there was only like one teaspoon of leaves :/ it more like flavoured hot water :/

Slotted in on Rose Street, at the back of the huge and imposing columned Dome buiding, this gorgeous little city-centre oasis is the perfect place to rest your shopping-weary feet and have a tasty lunch. It's only open from april to early september, and although it's tucked down a narrow street this place is a great little suntrap. You can get wraps, salads, soups, burgers, that sort of thing here - not a full á la carte lunch, but the portions are fairly generous so you'll only need one course. The service was ok, but our waiter didn't even bother to bring us our change back. We had been planning to leave it as a tip for him, but we thought it was a bit cheeky of him just to assume, especially when service is already included in the prices. For a salad and a soft drink you'll spend just over £10 a head, which makes it slightly pricier than a lot of other lunchtime cafés nearby, but this setting is just so gorgeous I'd happily pay the difference.

Again, that's alleged, but it's everywhere- Author J.K. But, we were determined to get all those stamps (and the satisfaction of having accomplished something that was specific to Edinburgh), so this was the first of two coffee shops visited in the space of an hour. Crazy? Yes, indeed. I really liked the feel of this shop. It's open, clean and bright. It's about on par, size-wise, as some of the other shops we visited, but it wasn't as busy. There were two guys working the counter when we arrived, and they had several tables open, which we took advantage of. We ordered our drinks and sat down to wait. They came out quickly, and they were delicious. The guy who brought our coffee to the table was very friendly, checking to make sure that we were set, that we had everything we needed, and that we knew they had fresh-baked pastries at the counter. I was interested in the pastries but knew that we had one more coffee shop to visit before really starting our day, so I had to abstain. The coffee was delicious - well brewed and served piping hot. I could see making this place into a normal haunt, if we were in the area more often.
