During my visit, Dr. Wong reviewed the tooth in question and, based on his X-rays, informed me that I had an infection. He told me that, because I am 52 years old, I would likely feel pain, and that "no patient likes to pay , feel pain or to loose a tooth" He said I needed to decide whether to extract the tooth or proceed with an **apicoectomy molar procedure**. He added that if I waited too long, he would not be available to help me, because he would be "somewhere on a beach." He explained that during an extraction, the tooth could break, and gave some outcomes of both options. He proceeded to **remove the tooth and then place it back in**, and provided prescriptions for pain and infection. He asked me to follow up in one month. This procedure occurred on **September 12, 2025**. I took the prescribed medications as directed. On **September 30 and October 1, 2025**, I began experiencing **intense pain** in the same area. On **October 1**, I called the office and was told they would notify Dr. Wong. I was also given the option to call him directly. I called him twice but received **no response**--neither from him nor from the office. On **October 2 at 4:30 PM**, I called again and let the office know I never received a call back. They told me they would contact me again and later scheduled an appointment for **Friday, October 3, 2025 at 8:45 AM**. When I arrived at the appointment, I was told it was actually scheduled for **10:45 AM**. I waited and was eventually taken in for new X-rays. When Dr. Wong approached me, I explained I was in severe pain. He reviewed the X-ray and said he didn't see anything "major" or a "fracture" -- but added that "there could be." I didn't understand what he meant by that. At that point, Dr. Wong became visibly **impatient, rude, and raised his voice**. He told me to open my mouth, then shouted at me to "open it more" -- with **no empathy or respect**. He proceeded to drill into the tooth **without addressing my pain level**, or showing any consideration for my discomfort. I began to cry from the pain. He asked me to bite down and whether I felt any difference. I told him I couldn't tell because the pain was too severe. He became **angry**, raised his voice again, and began **belittling me in front of his assistant**, making me feel like I was **dumb** and **wasting his time**. He continued drilling aggressively, then again asked me to tap and bite. I was still in severe pain. He showed **no empathy**, despite my obvious distress. I told him I wanted the issue resolved before traveling to Ecuador on **October 21, 2025**. In response, he sarcastically said, "If you don't want to feel pain, I can just take the tooth out and you won't feel pain anymore." He pressured me to make a decision immediately -- despite the fact that I trusted him with the **apicoectomy molar procedure** to save the tooth in the first place. I was shocked at his attitude. I expected him to offer a clear plan for next steps or treatment options. Instead, I told him that **he is the professional** and I was relying on his guidance. I said I trusted his expertise. He then left the room. I was in **tears**, deeply upset by his behavior. An assistant came in to offer me water and help calm me down. When Dr. Wong returned, he said he wanted to see me again a week before my trip. He asked why I was upset and **apologized**, saying he "didn't mean to be mean." I told him I was extremely hurt by the way he treated me -- that he was **not only mean**, but **unprofessional and aggressive**. I told him I hoped never to be treated by him again. He tried to give me a **fist bump**, which I refused -- I felt it was completely inappropriate after what had just happened. His assistant came back again to offer me water and help me leave the office calmly. I left feeling completely shocked, mistreated, and disrespected -- especially while enduring intense pain and trusting him for care.

I initially booked an appt with the endodontist that he recommended, but after looking on Yelp, I decided to cancel. Based on the 5 star reviews on Yelp, I made an appt at Arlington Endodontics. They have incredible equipment that takes very detailed images that show much more than what my dentist could see on an x ray. After examining the scans and images and doing some diagnostic tests, Dr. Eslinger told me that there's a good chance that my tooth is beyond needing a root canal. He gave me the option to continue or have it extracted elsewhere. Talk about honesty and integrity!! I think most dentists would have just done it and taken my money with no regard for the final outcome. Additionally, the staff was so kind and friendly. If I ever do need a root canal, I know where I am going.

After looking at my x-rays and doing some diagnostic "tests" it turns out that's exactly what I needed. So last month I had my first ever root canal. I was a little leery because I have always heard that root canals are very painful, but I'm happy to say that Dr. Eslinger made the process painless. The price was reasonable and I had no issues or after effects from the procedure. Everyone I interacted with was friendly, kind, and caring. I even received a call after the root canal to make sure I was going well and didn't have any problems or unanswered questions. I highly recommend Arlington Endodonics.

Everything seemed to go fine and I really appreciated the care that Dr. Trinh showed me. So when I started having extreme pain in the same place, I went back to Renovo. I got Dr. Wong. Nothing visible on the x-ray, so he decided I must just have some discomfort from my crown, which he promptly pulled off. (Btw - the pain was way higher than my gumline). When my response was near to tears instead of relief, he seemed perplexed. He took me to the 360 x-ray machine, which showed a big abscess in the same root that had been retreated by Trinh. Wong retreated it (again) with apologies that I had to go back to the dentist and pay for a new crown to replace the one he'd unnecessarily removed. Both Dr. Trinh and Dr. Wong are pretty likeable guys, so I was willing to chalk that up to human error. Stuff happens, I guess. But then. I was sent back to Renovo by the VA to address a tooth that was so infected, it was coming out of the side of my gums. Dr. O'Hara told me the tooth was likely cracked through and needed to be pulled. I'd been in pain for months and thought I was finally in a place where I could get relief. But Dr. O'Hara got demonstrably mad at me when I asked if they could pull the tooth. It turned into a weird drama that I don't fully understand. (They seemed to have a lot of issues with working with the VA.) They told me they do not pull teeth unless they also get to be the ones to put in the implant. In the end, Dr. Trinh walked in, pulled the tooth and walked out. I had to call my dentist to ask for after-care instructions. Such a bummer. I really wanted to love this place. But I don't recommend them. At this point, I can't. I can get past the rude receptionist in Schaumburg (the Elgin one is great), but the quality of care is not great. Endodontists are usually awesome problem solvers. Unfortunately, these guys have caused me more problems than they've solved.

I sought a second opinion at Renovo, and when they reviewed Dr Distel's recent imagery, the doctor spotted a root that was not cleared out and filled during the root canal Dr Distel performed. (So he missed it twice - once 10 years ago, and again when I came in with pain). This mistake led to a serious infection causing bone loss in my jaw and countless rounds of antibiotics, time off work, and pain. I went in for retreatment at Renovo to have the missed canal cleared out, only to discover the entire tooth was now compromised and was told I needed an oral surgeon for extraction. In total, I paid for 2 root canals, a surgical extraction, and anesthesia costs not covered by insurance before it was all said and done. Oh, and I lost the tooth. Please, avoid this endodontist at all costs.
