My review is not a positive reaction. I remember my Uncle Sonny bringing me to Louie's Pizza. I looked forward to this. A friend of mine passed away and I attended her services at St. John's Baptist Church. I remembered and on the way home I stopped by Louie's Pizza and ordered a cheese pizza. It was totally burnt and not at all possible to enjoy. I am extremely disappointed. I called and they just brushed me off. No more visits to Louie's Pizza for me. This pizza is quite good. Positives: - The kind of sauce you'd lick off a plate -- I think I detected a hint of honey in it? It's delicious. - Cheese-sauce-crust ratio is perfect - Same whole milk low moisture mozzarella you'll get at any good pizza place - Very much not burnt to death, unlike what people like to eat in New Haven Negatives (for me -- many others consider each of these a positive): - Doesn't hold the heat well -- it's meant to be eaten in the parking lot as soon as you get to your car - Crust takes a bit more force to chew than I like - Cheese on the outer rim doesn't extend farther than the sauce As far as the business in general: they don't waste time with web ordering, receipts, credit card support, or high customizability. You call 'em, you say you want to order a cheese pizza, they ask for your name, they tell you when to get there, you walk in with $15USD, and you walk out with 2 great meals worth of pizza. Had the "Louie's Special," and while I liked that the crust was indeed thin and nicely firm/chewy on the outside 1/8 inch unlike a lot of the more bread-like crusts you find around, the pizza as a whole was competent but nothing spectacular. Certainly better than that Domino's garbage. I liked that they are not timid with the salt like some places. Enough toppings, cheese, and sauce, but nothing to write home about either. At $29 it was actually more expensive than similar multi-topping pizzas from Regina's which is our usual go-to pizza place. However, Louie's suffers from some huge drawbacks: 1) Closes very early at just 7pm, 2) Cash only for orders under $40, and 3) Take-out only since the facilities consist of nothing but one long table with an old TV on the wall, so they are clearly not aiming at dine-in customers. (Due to #3 we just drove 3 minutes around the block and parked next to Horn Pond and ate in the car, which wasn't bad.) Oh, and 4) you have to order over the phone, no online ordering possible. White haired lady who answered the phone was not particularly friendly but not particularly rude, and nicer in person when I came to pick up. So yes, this place is very old-school and being someone who loves to root for the underdog, I'd love to support it. HOWEVER: All in all, Regina's similar combo pizza offers a better crust, more ample and flavorful toppings, and none of the aforementioned 4 handicaps. If Louie's pizza was actually spectacular (which I'd say Regina's is, comparatively) not merely competent, we would likely tolerate those handicaps and plan to come back in the future. Or if I lived within walking distance of Louie's and didn't have a car, it would also become a more attractive option. 3.5 stars read more

I was in Woburn for an event and needed to get lunch. Louie's happened to be a 5 minute walk from where I was, so I decided to give it a go. Really good pizza and a nice vibe in the restaurant. I took it to go but had a chance to talk to two of the people working in the business. It feels like a classic, family-run pizza place in every way, and the pizza is significantly better than most Boston-area pizza places. I was surprised to find something so good in Woburn -- no that they don't deserve it, just that it's not a place I'd expect to be have such a standout place. Good pizza. They only sell pizza. So you know they gotta be specialists. The sauce was awesome. Hint of sweetness. Flavorful. Winner. Cheese wasn't overwhelming. Portion control is so key. Pepperoni is so bomb. I dun usually like pepperoni like insanely, but this pepperoni just hit different. I love that their sausages aren't deconstructed, they are sliced. Again. Flavor profile is different. And texture. Dough was ok for me. Crust was a bit too much. It felt too chewy. But I would get this place again no doubt. Delish. read more

The short: Excellent pizza, takeout only, cash only (if under $40) The long: Have lived near Louie's for decades and never heard of it! There are so many pizza places and preferences in the Woburn/Winchester/Arlington area yet I've never found a place that I liked. Thanks to Yelp reviews remarking on the thin crust, perfect balance of toppings, sauce and cheese and non-oiliness we gave it a try. The friendly female order-taker said "I'll see you for pick up at 5:15". Given it's a small shop, orders are timed for pickup during Covid. Upon arrival, I was advised that they were behind schedule but that the upside would result in a piping hot pizza. The added 11 minute wait was worth it! The Louie's Special was indeed perfectly balanced, and the thin crust cooked to perfection. Reminiscent of the original Regina Pizza, I give Louie's the advantage. Another order picker-upper was peeved that the 'za wasn't yet ready. I sensed that this is just a 2-person husband & wife show, maybe 1 other working in the kitchen. I see this as part of the charm so don't get upset if your order is a few minutes behind, high quality is worth the added wait IMO. We will be back. read more

My hard and fast rule is to always give a place several chances to impress before I give a full review.....unless it just blows me away so much after one visit that it deserves a thorough write-up. I get that it has been an institution for like seven decades, I really do, and people will have an affinity for a product they loved as kids. But I'm just not feeling the same vibe as others from Louie's and it's really just a few simple reasons. Let's start with the actual product. Every time we have ordered a single pie the dough/crust has been wwwaaayyy too tough. This is the kind of pizza that will turn into a cracker the second time around you heat it. I just prefer softer doughs and don't get why it needs to be this way unless it's overcooked when people ask for it burnt (which it was not). It's also pretty greasy at times. I don't know if this is a mozzarella quality issue or what. That beef with the grease pails in comparison though to the crust which just seems like it needs more moisture overall and is its biggest drawback. I'm also a bit turned off by "no credit cards under $40". It gives off these weird tax evasion vibes that I can't really get behind. It's freaking 2022, make it a $10 minimum like just about everyone else and be done with it, there is no reason for that. Finally, the inside of the place is simply uninviting. It's like they DON'T want you eating there or hanging out. Why is that? I've read memories from folks who say there was a jukebox in here at one time. Now they have a TV blasting some news and no one to be seen. Are they catering to new generation this way? I would think not. I'm not saying to avoid this place, I'm not saying the pizza is bad. It is what it is at this point, but it's certainly not winning many awards in my mind for the atmosphere to the product itself. read more

I had read about this place on Yelp and figured to give it a try since I was visiting friends in the area. After trying it, this is one of those places that is a must visit in the area. It is what I categorize as "destination pizza" meaning you travel to get this stuff even if you don't live in the area. Heres why: I had the large plain pizza and it was thin and cooked just right. I hate when pizza is undercooked and I really hate when its burnt. This one was exactly right which left a nice crunch to the crust. The tomato sauce is vibrant and there is the right amount of cheese. The other thing I look for is how oily a pizza is and this one was not greasy at all. Pizza is such a simple meal but hard to be done right. I also tried a pizza with pepperoni which is a guilty pleasure and it was also solid. It is cash only so bring those benjamins. Cash only spots always seem to be good and I have no idea why. It seems like a family place and I would definitely come back. I work in NYC and this place would crush it there too. Had their pizza for the first time today, gotta say it's the best around. Great service as well. Ordered 2 pizzas, and the woman working today who brought out my order and checked me out, also helped me in handing my pizzas down to me outside down the steps, which was terrific. Only real very minor drawback is it's cash only for anything under $40.00. That's the only reason why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. And even then, like I said, that's extremely minor. If I could raise this review up to 4 1/2 stars out of 5, I would, but unfortunately, Yelp doesn't let us do 1/2's. Otherwise, the best pizza in Woburn. Will be back at some point. read more
