I had the Tom kha gai soup a little spicy (perfect amount of spice) and the pad Thai not spicy because I was shaking with my daughter. I'm happy to see some more Asian restaurants popping up in Mansfield, but the food here is always too salty and they use too much fish sauce. I also crave larb (minced pork salad) which they do not have, but every other Thai place I've ever been always has it. The service at lunch is slow, even when there isn't many tables. read more

We live in Mansfield and hesitated trying the place because of the reviews. I'm a huge lover of Thai/Lao food, so we decided to give them a try. We visited on a Wednesday for dinner time, they were actually pretty busy with the orders to go. Their was a few tables occupied indoors but because we have 5 year old that likes to run around the outdoor patio was perfect. The waitress was very polite and attentive. We received our food in a reasonable time. Their crispy egg rolls were my favorite for an appetizer. Papaya salad was the good amount of spice. Everything tasted good. Most of my reviews are on eateries where a family runs the business. "Sweet Rice" is a chain. They have restaurants in Allen, Frisco, Carrollton in North Texas. They have two in the state of Washington. Chains focus on a mass market. Family-owned restaurants tend to tune their tastes to the local market. With restaurant chains, you know what to expect. I like the surprise family-owned eateries bring. Thai food is one of my favorites. I was born in the largest country in Southeast Asia. I would say Thai food is like 1ndonesian food. I haven't tried food from Laos. "Sweet Rice" claims to be a Lao-Thai eatery. Asking the waiter for a good Lao dish was not a promising idea. You can see he wasn't from Southeast Asia. For appetizers, we ordered Fresh Vegetable Rolls with peanut sauce. The rolls lived up to its name: fresh and crunchy. For the main dishes, we ordered a Panang Curry and a Pad Kee Mow noodle. The curry was good, but not what I expected from a Thai restaurant. The sauce was thin and brown. I prefer creamier with stronger coconut flavor. Research on Google shows that Thai cuisine uses more coconut milk. Lao dishes use sticky rice, while Thai uses white rice. The noodle was good with caveats. We expected thicker noodles. And with more vegetables. I expected more spices and egg. I'm sure "Sweet Rice" isn't as dependent on a variety of multiple chefs. Chains use repeatable systems of preparing. It's reliable Southeast Asian food. I prefer family-owned restaurants. read more
