This business has opened in Einstein's Bagels space but has done nothing to improve the sterile interior. The dominating color is white, from the walls to the floor to the ceiling, where the magnificent original pressed tin has been drowned into obscurity with a thick impasto of paint. How anyone could find this space warm and inviting just shows how far HGTV has gone in brainwashing people that the absolutely cheapest, unornamented rooms should be their ideal. I can't wait until they decide everyone should put their walls back up again, have moldings, color, and wallpaper. They'll make money that way, too. But for the goods. Since it was after 3 pm, the number of products available were minimal. Looking at the 6 types of bread available, I was perturbed to see that all of them looked almost burnt. I said this to the counter clerk - after having had to wait as another clerk chatted for some time with a group of people who then only ordered coffee and prevented anyone from getting any service. He told me that they were perfectly cooked and his explanation was that they mill their own flour. This seemed no explanation to me, so I proffered that perhaps the breads caramelize more with this flour. His response, "Yeah, sure." So I decided I would give him the benefit of the doubt. A honey oat, very dark baguettes, a sunflower rye, and a 50% rye were on offer. I decided on the 50% rye. The loaf was meant for plain eating, not sandwiches, as it wasn't too high in the middle and very low on the sides. This loaf was $9, and the others were the same, one I think was $8. I also took a croissant and a blueberry lemon tart. This seemed prudent as the chef/owner was a pastry chef. The total was over $20 for these three items. I took them home and tried the croissant first. Having spent the month of May in France, I have eaten very recently quite a few croissants from bakeries (and even grocery stores) from the provinces to the capital. This one did not measure up. It was rubbery, lacking the requisite amount of butter, and was not flaky at all. There was not one crumb on my plate as I was attempting to eat it. Disappointing. Better to go to Trader Joe's and get their frozen croissants you proof overnight and bake. You won't pay $3.50 for a single one, either. On to the bread. It weighed a little over a pound. The crust was a bit of a chore to cut through and I had to smell the bread very closely to get any whiff of the rye that was supposedly half the flour. I buttered up the piece and while the interior was satisfyingly chewy (though barely rye-flavored), the crust did indeed have that bitterness you get when you leave your bread too long in the oven and, dare I say it, burn it. I understand that some flours may give you darker crusts but this was a bridge too far. For $9, I expected something spectacular. I was disappointed. Better to head over to Devon Market and get Ideal Bakery's Chleb Babuni, which is made from 100% rye flour, water, and salt. Yes, it has a dark crust but it doesn't bite you back. And it doesn't cost $9. Finally, the tart. Having had little success with the previous purchases, I was not optimistic that this tart would be anything special. I hadn't noticed when I saw it in the shop that it was speckled with bits of basil but with the first bite, it hit me in a delightful way. And that was not all. The blueberries themselves had wonderful flavor, so much so that I remembered what blueberries tasted like before all our food started getting produced for looks rather than taste. The lemon custard was mildly tart and mildly sweet, neither overwhelming and perfectly balanced. Even the crust itself held up to the wetness of the custard, not becoming soggy but satisfyingly al dente. Finally, a success. A beautiful pastry indeed. So the takeaway of this little experiment is this - if you are a pastry chef, you can make delectable pastries. But breads are a different matter altogether, and even while you may be talented in one area, some culinary skills are not translatable. Having watched Bobby Flay trying to "win" a "throwdown" with bakers, it was clear. Just because you're a podiatrist, it doesn't mean you're a surgeon. Stick with the pastries. Unless they figure out somehow when it's the right time to take the bread out of the oven. read more

Outstanding... how expensive everything is. I was craving a croissant(not a $5 one at least) and I must admit their version is way better than the standard chocolate baton version. I believe these are made with a melted bittersweet chocolate. Couldn't identify what the smell of it was, but it was something citrusy. Lost Larson looks as much a boutique or a gallery as it does a bakery; they did a wonderful job building the place. It is a clean, crisp, warm, smart looking space. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. I ordered a chocolate croissant, and an almond croissant. The almond croissant was crisp and fluffy with a nice amount of almond in each bite. The almond filling added just the right amount of moistness without nearing the point of being wet. The chocolate croissant was unlike other chocolate croissants I've had. They must add cacao powder or something similar to their dry ingredients; it is the darkest croissant I've seen, and it is not at all burnt. Their chocolate croissant is all crisp and flake - no fluff yet very airy. It crackles like a very fine potato chip. The chocolate inside is not a firm chocolate baton; it is creamy like ganache. Both croissants had a nice balance of butter and saltiness too. The front door closed so snuggly against the threshold, that they might need to adjust it at some point. There's an ongoing trend of "wide open sight lines" in stores. It is a nice open space that works well here. But a trend I'm not a fan of is "low counters". Especially when staffers need to sort of bend a bit to work the cash register. It is ok for customers to not see everything from every angle. Employees work hard, they should not need to bend or lean unnecessarily just because bulking up a counter might interfere with some sight line, or disturb some visual flow. There is a bit of an echo in the room, and it might get loud in there when crowded. Lost Larson is as good as the best bakeries in Chicagoland. Go there as soon as you can. read more

I love, love, love this place and so glad it's in my neighborhood. It has a great European feel. I had a raspberry tart which tasted so fresh and the flavor of the raspberry really came through without overpowering the pastry. There are a few other good bakeries in Andersonville and the prices at Lost Larson were a bit higher. Guys...it is worth the $$. This is not your mom's bakery. It's obvious that the chef at Lost Larson is an immensely talented and well-trained gourmand and everything I have tried from there is next level. Their carrot cake is unlike any carrot cake I have ever had, with an apricot gelee. The trail max cookie is most yet crunchy with the most delicious dried fruits and nuts. The bostock is a rum soaked bread with apples. I can't wait to try everything on the menu. If you are a foodie, this is your place. If you just want a special treat. The pastries here are too sweet me. It's like eating dessert for breakfast. Many of the buns have rock sugar garnish all over them, which makes for a pretty picture but is unnecessary in terms of taste and nutrition. I love cardamom buns and cardamom bread, but the cardamom bun here is too sticky and syrupy IMHO. They do have a few savory buns and scones, but nothing that stands out for me so far. I haven't tried their toasts yet. The coffee is good (Stumptown). You have to arrive early for the best selection of baked goods. read more
