This was one of my reasons for revisiting Cheung Chau (the other being the giant fishballs). The shop is unassuming, like most dessert places in Hong Kong. It is along a row of restaurants and it can be easily missed if you are not looking for it! I ordered the durian pudding with mixed fruit and peanut ice cream balls. I also added the mango dumplings because I HAD TO. I justified this by telling myself that I would not be back in Cheung Chau for a really long time. The durian pudding was smooth and pungent enough. It was a little heavy, but eating it with the fruit was extremely refreshing. The peanut ice cream balls are a mochi with vanilla ice cream inside and peanut shavings on the outside. I really haven't seen anything like it outside of Cheung Chai. The mango dumplings were like a firm jello with a piece of mango - it was also very refreshing. My friends all enjoyed their orders as well. I cannot think of a better place to cool down in (with AC) from the scorching heat outside. Next time I visit Cheung Chau, you will find me at this dessert shop. I promise! Give it a try!

In our case, they "ran out" of some of the dishes so they couldn't cook it. Well, that's all right. We had tasted 2 different curries (with rice) and they were both very yummy-flavourful. The soup was just...well..soup..skip the soup. The salad was fresh, but I could make my own... So, the only recommendation I could give is: skip everything else and just have the curry. Enjoy!

You ever get that feeling when you walk past a place and you're like "Whoa! I can't afford this!"…read more Kikusan is like that. First of all, it's in one of the most expensive malls in one of the most expensive districts in one of the most expensive places in the world (Landmark, Central, Hong Kong). Secondly, it's an amalgamation of some of the more pricey cuisines: Japanese and Tapas, or trendily known as Japas. Thirdly, it looks like a contemporary art museum. But, never would I have imagined that here, I can not only have an affordable meal, but get one of the best valued dishes I've ever had! The signature Kikusan roll: 8 pieces of tuna filled sushi roll, topped with a whole slab of uni, green onions, and lots of salmon roe. All of my favourite things in a generous quantity for HKD $68. According to today's exchange rate, that's CAD $10.94. You usually get 8 pieces of California roll at that price (Kikusan's California Roll is actually $88). The same amount of uni at a supermarket easily costs 2-3x as much. The roll itself is mild, but still flavourful. There aren't any crazy flavour bursts, but it all works together well. The uni didn't have as much uni flavour as I would've liked but hey...$68. Really. The green onions added sharpness to cut through the smooth tuna and the little exploding roe provided bursts of sweetness. The Kikusan Roll was all about balance. By contrast, the Chili Sesame & Peanut Soup Ramen with Minced Pork and Layered Pork Cutlet was very in-your-face flavour-wise, and delicious in a whole other way! The pork cutlet had a hint of sake and the spice was at a perfect level of heat. My theory is that the Kikusan Roll is one of those loss leader things because it definitely drew me to this restaurant. The strategy seems to be working well. At 12:10pm, the queue was making an S in front of the entrance. Everyone was ordering things that range from sushi to dim sum in this Asian fusion restaurant, with dishes on average ranging from $60 to well above $100. It's much easier to get in as a group of 2, so my advice would be to split up your big group if you don't mind sitting apart. They've also got a dim sum takeout counter for those not willing to battle the line. Would you come to Kikusan for the best Japanese food? No, not even close. But it's where you go when you want to impress your out-of-town, non-Japanese friends. It's where you go when you want to feel a little fancier without spending the kind of dollars you usually spend at Landmark. They were some of the best dumplings I'd ever had in my life - so good that I'm considering going back again just for those, and I'm thinking about them even the day after!! My friends ordered the eel on rice, veggie dumplings, assorted tempura, and salmon sashimi. The tempura, especially the kakiage, was great. The sashimi was very fresh & they give you nice thick pieces. I also had the Japanese mojito which was very refreshing. Dal, kadhi, one vegetable (potato tomato or aalu tamatar), rice, roti, dhokla, yogurt and dessert were the same on both times. Two vegetables were different and a vegetable fritter was different. They had potato one time and The first time, they had chickpeas and cabbage. Today, they had kala chana (a thinner, smaller and darker version of chickpeas) and squash as the other. Preparations of the meal - on point, good and very home style. The dal was out of the park good. We've been living out of suitcases for over a month and a half now, hence, more appreciation for the home style food ;) Last time, the husband got chola bhatura (chickpeas curry fried leavened flatbread), which was good. A relatively small sized bhatura but nicely done. And we also got the medu vada (fried lentil dumplings for the lack of being able to explain it better), which was great. Perfectly fried, cooked inside, crisp outside. And a very very very nice sambhar - the kind I like, in terms of the taste and the tadka. It didn't have as many vegetables as we usually put at home, put it home run for me. This time, it was vada pav and capsicum paneer masala, also known as kadhai paneer. Both were good, again. The panner sabzi gravy wasn't the smooth ones like you usually get at the North Indian restaurants, but was more chunky. And with abundant garlic, it tasted very good. The vada pav wasn't as expected. They served the vadas and the pav breads separately, with a side of sambhar and coconut chutney. It was missing the quintessential dry garlic chutney. And I like green chutney as well with it. The besan (chickpea flour batter) layer could've been thicker.

Some of the recommended dishes were the thali (like a combo that comes with rice) and the Mysore masala dosa. For most of the time, I just had no idea what I was eating. The dishes mainly consisted of some beans and some tofu kind of stuff. There was also a spicy rice that was quite yummy. For drinks, I highly recommend the mango lassi. I order mango lassi every time I dine at an indian restaurant and I must say Branto's was one of the best I've had... not too sour as I don't like it with a strong yogurt taste. Overall, I'd recommend this place if you are a vegetarian. For Indian cuisine, I still like it with meat like lamb or chicken.
