Their Birria tacos are $2 each and are the perfect mix of beef and cheese on a corn tortilla taco. It's not seasoned hamburger, but real, chewy, tasty beef. Go with the Birra tacos, they're the best. The steak taco had a good amount of steak and was 2nd best. The shrimp taco had 2 mid-small shrimp, but was tasty and 3rd best. The chicken taco was packed, but made with chicken and potatoes, bland and dry. All tacos had cheese with cucumbers and onions on the side. No tomatoes or salsa, but I said absolutely no cilantro, so that may be why. A consume is available for dipping and I enthusiastically recommend it, the flavor was rich, meaty and properly seasoned. The manager was attentive and friendly, but the waitress appeared to be a bit inexperienced, slow to get around the tables. She had a great personality, gave great insight on the food and was quite welcoming. She'll be a star in hospitality/food if she puts in the time and effort. The ambiance is your standard "strip mall dive" type booths and tables that aren't there to impress, but get the job done. My take out order was ready instantly in a weekend evening! Ready to pick up mere minutes after I placed the order. The employees were super nice! The Birria Pizza is a generous size! Great Tacos and Barria, but... The Ramen I would not recommend. No body, no flavor outside of the meat. It actually tasted like .25 ramen with meat on top. It made dining a little uncomfortable, especially during lunchtime. I also noticed there was only one gentleman working the front -- he was running the register, greeting customers, and serving tables all on his own. To his credit, he did not appear overwhelmed and kept a positive demeanor, but service was understandably slow. I honestly felt he should have had some assistance, especially since the place was packed the entire time I was there. I ordered the Combination Molcajete, and I have to say -- it was delicious and very flavorful. It came with Mexican rice and charro beans, and I substituted a flour tortilla instead of corn. The food itself was reasonably priced and worth it in terms of portion and taste. If you're stopping by on a lunch break, just be aware of the wait time due to limited front staff. As for the ambiance, it was mediocre at best -- pretty much your typical casual Mexican joint, nothing particularly standout on the atmosphere side. So I'm not gonna everytime I've passed this place on my way to uptown on Menaul I've found myself more and more curious. I love Mexican food. Unfortunately because well where my hometown is, the definition for Mexican food and New Mexican food are two different things. Because of this I'm always iffy to go to places named Mexican because they are not what my definition is. Anyways I heard they offered $2 birria tacos for taco Tuesday. I've never had one and I've been curious so I decided today was the day! Walking in the place was really nice. I hadn't realized they used to be a food truck. That's so cool they have an actual restaurant now! That gave me even more excitement when I discovered that. The food was ready to go soon as I rolled up to the register. I ordered ahead online. They got that out quick! Going home I had no idea what to expect but the excitement was killing me. I finally got home and was impressed with the packaging. Mainly cuz I ordered rice and a cup of the consume to go with the tacos. They tapped that lid shut which I appreciated cuz the whole time I was driving home I was so scared to make too sharp of a turn or god forbid I gotta slam my breaks. I was basically worried for nothing. Thank goodness! I of course added the cilantro and onions it came with, drizzled on some lime and then went for that first dip. Omg I felt like the crazy bird from the old coco puff commercials. I literally lost my mind it was so good. I'm so disappointed I didn't try it sooner! Because I took it to go they were a little soggy but that's ok it was still really good. I bet they taste even better right at the restaurant. Next time I'm trying them inside the restaurant. Just went to the new location right next door to the old one. The food was just as good but management might need some help. Went in at around 2:30 pm with a slight rush unfortunately there was only one worker dealing with people coming in and fulfilling to go orders. Nice guy his name was Victor and he did the best he could doing everything at once. Saw at least 4 people get up and leave due to the backed up line of to go orders. Was frustrated had to be patient since there was only one person dealing with it all. Hope they hire more people. read more

I got lucky on Sunday and was able to get in here without there being a crowd. This place is always full when I drive by. This new location they have is a few doors down from the old location and it's way bigger with nicer seating. Everything was clean and the service was friendly and fast. The food was prepared well, the garnish was fresh and crunchy. The best part was the red chile had great flavor. Most restaurants in New Mexico just try and turn the heat up at the detriment of the flavor. This had medium high heat that takes a little bit to build up, but the flavor was better than most in town. Definitely will give this a try again, I forgot to ask if the birria here is real and made with goat or if it is gringo birria and made with beef. I will give an update on my next trip. read more

I like Los Pookies, but I'd not say that they had their act totally together. But . . . it's real. The food is good. Surprisingly to me, the birria tacos (the $2 Taco Tuesday brought me in) aren't the best thing I've had here - they're good, but not great (and not - to my taste - the best in town), but plenty dandy for the special price on Tuesday. But the Pookies Burger! It's really kind of it's own thing. I don't know how to describe it - a really large patty ground with bacon in the mix, bacon and lunchmeat on top of it along with cheese, special sauce and all the fixings. And - I don't know whether they actually soak it with chile/broth like a Pambazo, but the thing just comes out _drenched_ in flavor: your hands will be dripping as you eat this. (Minimum four napkins to consume.) It's . . . well, it's a trip - here in the land of Green Chile Cheeseburger, the Pookies Burger is something else entirely, but it's something I'm very happy to have tried. And I'll have it again. Man, they're nice folks. And they're always hustling to get stuff to the customers. But, well, they might forget something - they're so gracious when you remind them and they'll get it to you, but . . . if you're a little prince who expects everything to be perfect because you're special, well, you might be disappointed at Los Pookies. The room has a few tables, a long bar looking out into the parking lot and a small bar looking toward the hustling cooks in the kitchen. The place is known for birria, so whatever you get (most people get either the birria tacos or birria pizza here), go for something with birria in it! They also have some variation of food with birria in it such as grilled cheese and ramen as well. So, if you are up to trying something new, those dish may be good to try. I had a birria ramen and thought the soup in particular was very tasty! The portion is on a smaller side (but that's good for me because I usually feel super bloated after a bowl of ramen) and I would definitely have it again. The restaurant is small and gets busy (on a weekend night, you may have to wait for some seats). Once seated and the food was ordered, however, food was served quick! I've been a customer of Los pookies fod awhile and recently it seems to have gone down hill... I went in two weeks ago to have taco Tuesday they told me pick a seat I'll be with you soon. It wasn't super busy in the restaurant. I sat and waited for 22 minutes wasn't acknowledged so I walked out and gave my service elsewhere. It's small - 4 tables and counter seating. We ordered the steak tacos & cheese enchiladas at the counter and waited. Food arrive looking great. The taco shell was freshly fried with the reddish cast probably dipped in enchilada sauce before frying. Much better than the generic pre-folded taco shell. There was a nice amount of relatively unseasoned steak, it worked because the other ingredients provided the spiciness. The beans were whole with bacon. I've been to Los Pookies a few times now, and they legit have the best Birria in town. Los Pookies had a food truck and now they have a sit down restaurant located on Menaul. Every time I dine at Los Pookies I want to try something new, but I keep ordering the Birria Taco plate. The cheese on the torta is cooked before being place on the torta and that grilled cheese sure is yummy! The carne asada was a bit on the tough side but still super tasty. The one thing that was off is the torta was sitting in the same container as The birria fries with so separation so the whole bottom of the torta was soggy from the sauce on the fries.
