I'm from California so I guess I'm spoiled when it comes to good Mexican food but I saw the reviews for this place were decent so I stopped here for dinner on 10/30/2020. The steak & chorizo tacos I got were good but there wasn't any pineapple in them as it said there would be on the menu (the pineapple would've made them better). Another issue is that the guacamole pictured on the menu showed that there were tomato, onion, and cilantro in it but the guac I got was lacking in all three of those. Also, there was a noticeable piece of the avocado peel in my guac (see photo) so that was disappointing. read more

Tonight we decided to give Salsita's another try since the last time we were a little disappointed that our fajitas weren't sizzling when they came out. This time we tried something different and I ordered the steak salad and hubby ordered the mega burrito the burrito had good flavor because it was mixed with chicken and rice and queso cheese on top. My salad on the other hand could have used some seasoning because the steak didn't have much flavor at all and it comes in a crispy shell with a small portion of lettuce. They also bring you a little plate for sour cream pico and guacamole. I used the the salsa that they bring out for the chips to give this salad a little flavor. We stopped on our way back from Columbus, OH traveling home to RI. We stopped at Cracker Barrel but the wait was too long. So we saw this place on map nearby. When we pulled it, the outside gave it a good disguise from the inside. It's beautiful inside and the food was absolutely authentic. Probably one of the best places I've had Mexican. I have a feeling this place has improved since the time that some of the poorer reviews were written. I ate here on two different nights while was staying at a nearby hotel. The food, while not what I grew up with in So Cal, was surprising. I was shocked to see they had taquitos. Properly fried and everything! Not like some of the crap I find in Columbus. The next night I was there I had the Salsita Fajitas (a mixture of shrimp, beef, and chicken). Both meals were pretty good. I was a little dissapointed I didn't get some rice with my fajita's. The Margarita's were what really won me over. Strong and large in quantity. For the amount of food and drink you get, the price is hard to beat. The food runner forgot my tortillas and our waiter never came back to check on us. I was halfway through my meal when I got the hostess to refill my drink and get my tortillas. I was not happy there weren't more reviews for this place despite what other folks said. Even though the place is packed one cannot assume the place is a great restaurant to eat. As we were headed to State College, PA our dinner stop called for us to stop in the Niles, OH area. There were 2 Mexican restaurants to choose from with mediocre reviews so we decided to chance Salsitas. From the restaurant's exterior you would think the place was a dump or a dive. Perhaps new ownership has not had a chance to spruce the exterior from the previous owner. Once we walked in the restaurant the interior surprised us. It was colorful and most of all the waitstaff were Hispanic. This is always a good sign (I can say this since I am Mexican) because it usually means the food could be authentic. As we read the menu we realized that there was a third of the menuy dedicated to translating what most of the dishes consisted of. What was queso? It was just cheese dip. What about Nachos? Seriously? Are people not that familiar with Mexican food in the north that a Mexican establishment has to translate Mexican dishes? It was humorous to me. Even though I was scared that a lot the specials catered to American (Tex-Mex) or Amercanized Mexican food, like Buffalo Chicken tacos, there were dishes that sounded like the authentic dishes I was used to. I decided to go with my usual favorite, Green Enchiladas, or enchiladas with salsa verde (Green sauce). It came with a side of rice and beans. My husband ordered HIS usual, chicken fajitas with poblano peppers and onions. Both our dishes were incredibly delicious! I had so much chicken in each enchilada that I could barely finish the dish. The Youngstown Mexican restaurant scene has 2 main players with multiple outlets. Unlike "the other one", Salsitas focuses on food and pricing. As authenic as you will get in the rust belt of Ohio. The "other one" focuses on the bar, big screen TVs and the bar crowd. Food is a distant second and inconsistent at best. Salsitas food is good, fresh, freshly prepared and plentiful. The salsas and pico de gallo are freshly made. Their chips are fried, as they're supposted to be. Their prices are very inexpensive, even their bar items. The exterior of some of the outlets leaves the wrong impression, but in my travels I've discovered that some of the best food comes from restaurants that do not look like a museum or showroom. The Guacamole was severely watered down, the mole tasted too much like chocolate, and the shredded carnitas were bland with no taste. The inside feels like a diner, with some slight Spanish decor. The service could use some brushing up, as they were rushing us despite the fact the place was nearly empty. The one thing that chimed in well with my group was the $7 pitcher of margarita! It was a good size, similar to the plastic water pitchers in most establishments. For less than $20 a party of four could get wasted. If a Taco Bell opens up in the area, then this place will be in trouble. read more
