Some of the best tacos I've ever had. This is a great Mexican restaurant right in the heart of Girard. Spacious with interesting artwork. (So I took photos to include here!) The mahi mahi tacos were very good. Barbacoa (braised beef) is delicious. My cousin ordered a quesadilla platter and it was enormous... the size of her plate practically (it folds over). She asked for a vegetarian version and the kitchen substituted with grilled cauliflower which she loved. Our server Alexia was a doll. Very accommodating. The entire staff was so helpful. They have a full bar and it looks like they turn into a nightclub atmosphere at night. We went during lunch on a Saturday and were seated immediately. Highly recommended. Stopped by for our first time. What a great place. Atmosphere was nice. Great music. Ordered the hibiscus margarita and my friend ordered the pineapple margarita. I want to like this place. The bar is excellent and the staff always helpful. The problem is the food not be consistent. The Asada way( skirt steak ) can be fresh and seasoned well. Usually, the staff will ask how do you want your steak prepared. The mid rare is the best. Tonight there was no discussion and the steak was served obviously old by a day or two and was bland warm and grey. My sons was the same way. My wife ordered Adada fahita and our plates looked identical to hers. Poor quality. read more

We drive past this place a few times a week always saying we're gonna stop by, today we finally did and it was worth the wait! Saul greeted us as we entered and seated us with no wait. It seemed a little slow but we've seen this place packed more often than not. Wednesday is fajita night, buy one get one half off. From start to finish El Hefe is not your typical Mexican food restaurant. Starting from having unique decor (no Jarritos bottles lining the walls or Dia de los Muertos decorations all around) to chicharrones as complimentary treat instead of chips and salsa. Don't worry, you can still order some chips and salsa for an appetizer. We went with the medium salsa (you can do mild, medium, or hot), green and DELICIOUS!! If you've had fajitas once then you can guarantee to have had fajitas at most restaurants in your area. NOT HERE!!! Ordered chicken fajitas and this was the most delicious, juiciest chicken laid on a bed of sautéed onions, peppers, and mushrooms with refried beans and rice on the side and plated, not on the overdone sizzling pan on a slab of wood. I ordered "The Boss" margarita, a pineapple margarita with Tajin on the rim - MMMMMMMM!!! Dessert we had a cake sampler which consisted of a slice each of Tres Leche, Chocoflan, and Carlotta cake. Drinks and apps are off the chain. If you want dips just order a 4 way dip (you'll see it). The serving sizes are pretty much the same when you're paying full price. The queso is bigger, but also has meat in it so, you get what you pay for there. Other than that place is modern with a laid back staff. The seats are comfortable and spaced out. Music is bumping. Consisted of four quesadillas stuffed with shrimp and white fish and then topped with a few more chunks of shrimp and whitefish smothered in queso and lightly garnished with greens and radish slices, this made for an absolutely delicious meal. Tacos are just as good, server was super nice and refilled waters often. Definitely recommend, ambiance is nice as well, very comfortable seating and lighting. Creative twist on authentic Mexican cuisine. The artwork is absolutely breathtaking and was done by a muralist from Mexico City. The cocktails are delicious and reasonably priced. I've eaten here twice in the last two weeks! The chef and owner are so friendly and kind. The servers and bartenders are very friendly and checked in regularly. I was also there for live music from a wonderful local artist named Tyler Jenkins. It so sad to see negative feedback form a wonderful restaurant because people expected their version of Mexican food.. The servers were friendly and helpful. I had a strawberry margarita, chicken soup (tasty), the chips & 4 salsas plate (the corn mix was excellent; the verde delicious; the queso very good but runnier/thin than expected; the guacamole too tart for me), and the three tacos plate (I got shrimp, ground beef & steak: The shrimp was great, the others very good). I'm giving them a ** because of the great service and their atmosphere. Our waiter was wonderful, honestly he was too good for the restaurant. He was cordial, swift with service and took great care of our group. Now, to the restaurant, I have NEVER had to purchase chips and salsa, Queso is usually extra but it is usually a wonderful thick cheesy sauce with chilis. The small cup that was presented on a little tray with a dozen snd and a half triangles was a runny, thin, white watery mess. The first one, their Fundoto was not fun in a bowl. It had the appearance of chunky vomit. To give them the benefit of the doubt it was sampled but was sent back. The next bowl was supposed to be a cheese dip. It had a faint cheese flavor, but, was like they had purchased cheap dollar store cheese in a jar and had blended it with hot water to give it the texture of clam chowder. Now let's talk chips! I have had in house made fresh chips. They are crisp, warm and very flavorful. The absolute best was in a small restaurant in Phoenix where many of the patrons were from below the boarder, you know it's authentic if the patrons are from the country. The chips at El Hefe were tooth chipping hard, cold flat tasting excuses for a chip. Imagine cardboard with a thin layer of cement spread over it, that would be my best description. Now I ordered two tacos because it was Taco Tuesday. They weren't bad but they were not Tacos and they were not traditional street tacos. And at $2.50 the price was appropriate but nothing to write home about. Now the Enchiladas looked like Flautas. They were about the size of a man's thumb in circumference, hard on the outside and the Mole sauce looked like refried beans with a dark chocolate candy bar melted in it. For the $14.95 price the salad which was to accompany the dish was not served unless they count the small piece of green and single thin onion slice as a salad. The person who ordered it was not impressed. The burrito, which usually comes with beans, rice or some type of side came alone on a dried out cracked wooden board that looked like a case of food poisoning waiting to happen. It was alone on the board. No beans, no rice, no salad and we were told they are extra items. Ok, so let's get to happy hour. I purchased a Pina Colada. It tasted good but you know a Pina Colada doesn't usually come in a high ball glass. It was not a listed beverage so my minuscule beverage was $10.00! Margaritas were the only happy hour choice and they were $7 in a small version of a Margarita glass. There will be NO return to El Hefe. When I looked at the reviews I was shocked to see the rave reviews. I think instead of paying for reviews they need to work on their menu snd rethink their pricing. I could see if everything was high quality protein and fresh high quality vegetables but alas, not so. The Tres Leche cake was great. I wish I could find out where they purchased it. This place is quickly becoming one of our favorite spots! We have been there numerous times with multiple people and not one time have we had a bad experience or a subpar meal! Everything that I have tried has been delicious! The ceviche is delicious, the carne esata is tender and very flavorful, the esquittes dip is one of our favorites! The shrimp tacos, the burritos and the mexi-can burger, yes burger at a Mexican restaurant are all very good! This may sound strange because when I was told to try it here I was a little taken back but the NY Strip steak is simply amazing. I am not one that orders steak out very often because I think mine are the best but I have had it a few times and it is wonderful! Always cooked to the temp I like it and the seasoning on it is perfect! Their drink selection is pretty large including several draft beers, margaritas, smoked bourbons plus a full bar.
