    Another shot of the mimosa

Alright, folks, gather 'round, because I've got a tale of a place that serves vegan pizza so good that even your carnivorous friends will want a slice, gluten-free hot dogs that will make you question your life choices, and wings so crispy, they might just be the eighth wonder of the world. Welcome to Westside Bowl--a glorious mix of dive bar, bowling alley, and quirky restaurant that feels like it was designed by a mad scientist who specializes in both food and fun. Let's talk food first because, let me tell you, this place has vegan and gluten-free options that will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about food. Vegan pizza? Yes. And not just any vegan pizza--this stuff is top-tier. The crust is perfect, the toppings are loaded, and it's so satisfying that you'll forget it's vegan. The pickle pizza? I know what you're thinking: "Pickles on pizza? Are we sure about this?" And to that, I say, "Yes. Yes, we are." It's one of the best pickle pizzas I've ever had--salty, tangy, and surprisingly perfect with the cheesy goodness. Now, the vegan hot dogs--they have these magical little things that taste like they've been kissed by the gods of grill. Honestly, if you didn't know they were vegan, you'd just think they were straight-up delicious hot dogs. Mind-blowing. And their wings? Let's just say you'll be licking your fingers and possibly questioning your entire eating philosophy in the best way possible. But enough about the food--let's talk about the atmosphere, which is where Westside Bowl really shines. It's like a quirky, retro dream with an eclectic staff who are... well, let's say "memorable." The owners? Incredible. They run this place with a vision and passion that's contagious. And then there's the staff--oh boy, the staff. They are the kind of characters you'll either love or love to hate. But let's be real: they're the kind of eclectic personalities that make the place fun. Now, here's the thing. One fateful evening, I had a run-in with a security guard/bouncer that I'm not proud of. To put it lightly, I got embarrassed to the point where I haven't exactly rushed back in. This bouncer? Let's just say he took "security" to a whole new level--like he was personally invested in my awkwardness. He created a level of second-hand embarrassment for me that I will carry to my grave, calling me out for coming in with "various friends," insinuating to a full bar I was of unsavory character but wasn't dating any of them. But honestly? The food, the drinks, and the overall vibe are so incredible that I'm willing to forgive the odd awkward encounter and keep coming back for more. And let's be clear: the drinks here are almost as amazing as the food and atmosphere. They've got cocktails and beers that fit the energy of the place--fun, eccentric, and definitely a conversation starter. If you haven't tried the signature drinks, you're missing out. So, if you're looking for a place that's alternatively quirky, fun, and delicious, Westside Bowl is where you want to be. Just maybe check the security situation before you get too comfortable. The food alone is worth the occasional "oops" moment. And besides, if you're looking for a great time and amazing food, the occasional embarrassment just adds to the charm. Trust me. Go for the wings, stay for the pickle pizza, and let the vibes do the rest. Just avoid making eye contact with the bouncer or coming in with friends as he may accuse you of being a harlot for no reason.

The first time I visited this place, a stand-in bassist for a Scandi metal band stuck gum on my forehead in the middle of the set. He came back a riff later and slurped it back off; a process more involved than you'd think and much longer than I'd hoped. It was disgusting but worth the story, and from that moment I knew this place was going to be legendary. Westside Bowl has somehow eked out a place as a miniature Mecca of metal in the Midwest -- seemingly every new or up-and-coming band my group has wanted to see in the last year has had a show here in the wilds outside of Cleveland. Unassuming from the outside, this venue has two levels and possibly two stages, though I've still only seen performances at the one in the basement. Inside it's decorated in a mix of late 20th century Americana, band merch and typical bar fare, the hallmark of the lower level being their impressive collection of tees from all the groups who've graced their stage. They draw a great crowd and have one of the best happy hours I've seen this decade: 4-8pm every weekday with $1 off cans (making the usual $2 PBRs & Gennys just $1), $2 draft 'Gansetts, $1 hotdogs, and $2 pizza by the slice (among other specials). The pizzas sell as fast as they can come out and taste as good as handmade (they very well may be). The meat-eaters in my party commended the hotdogs and chicken wings, and I had no problem finding plenty to eat as someone who doesn't eat anything that walks for flies. Everything was delicious, though I wish more came in an order given the prices the appetizers are sold for. There are even vegan and gluten-free options for those who need them. Our most recent visit ended with us upstairs as the final songs of the last act (who we only left because we'd just seen them recently) vibrated up to us through the floorboards. We'd all had a bit too much and were giggling and making jokes and not worrying about the bill being too high or rushing to beat the crowd out of the parking lot. That's a feeling you can't get at many places anymore. Somehow we also got roped into playing bingo -- I won a mug, but Plan B was another tempting option. I love the implied paradox of someone being irresponsible enough to go home and hit it raw after a rousing, rowdy round of BINGO (of all things), yet having the foresight to choose the morning after pill as their night's prize. Wild. If I lived closer I'd be here all the time, but I guess I'll have to settle for retreading the 2.5 hour trek from my home in Columbus from time to time. It's well worth the trip and I would argue the same is true for you if you live in a similar vicinity. Oh yeah, you can probably bowl here too, though I've yet to witness it actually happening. The posted pricing ($10 for unlimited) is pretty good though!

Super cool atmosphere - art, good music, friendly staff... FANTASTIC pizza...have been there for live music... great sound quality - lighting is always top notch - no excessive fees on ticket prices. Costs in food and drinks very reasonable. Highly recommend this awesome place. Wish it was a little closer to my home!

Holyshit Westsidebowl has Great Pizza. The Youngstown pizza market is very competitive but they have done it and will be in talk for the valleys best. The crust is perfect, done but not hard, soft but not doughy. They have combined two of the area favorites pizza & pierogi and hit a homerun. pickelpizza, pierogipizza and wings were great

Tom Terrific here with another honest business review…read more My brother heard about this place and was aching to go there. He has his own Jumbo pinball machine in his home and he's really into it. So am I, so we stopped in a few days after Christmas. Admission on that Sunday was $20 per person. I was stunned by how many people were there. Male and a surprising number of females. Whole families with little kids were having a blast. It's a huge place with many hundreds of machines, most of which are pinball. They have gun shooting machines, the pac man type machines and my favorite the baseball games where this flapper rises up and a pinball shoots out and you whack it with the bat using your flipper control. My favorite pinball was the Twilight Zone. It gave me lots of time to bang that ball around and it had all the bells, whistles and lights I love. Many times in the 2 and a half hours we were there I'd just go from one machine to the next one all down the line. What fun! The men's restroom was medium size, easy to find in the rear and clean. I was surprised to find that they have a great concession court. It had lots of tables, chairs and napkins. There was a TV showing football. The biggest surprise was the quality of the food. My $3.50 hot dog was all beef on a fresh bun and there were all the condiments, even relish in packets. The food staff wore latex gloves and all of them were neat, clean and wholesome looking. I refuse to eat at any place that hires people with what we in Tampa call snot rings that go into their septum and hang down to their lips. UGH. Get the hell out of here. Not for me. Very unsanitary. I complimented the staff on their food and they thanked me. I noticed that they had quantity control. The french fries were made to order and they came out of a small sandwich bag that I assume was weighed for a consistent number of fries. You don't see that everywhere. I checked the counters and the floor of the kitchen and the entire place - it was clean and the floors appeared freshly mopped. A+ Past Times also had decorations and photos on the walls and my brother knew who the old men were that were depicted there. The walls honored the pioneers of pinball, a very appropriate thing to do. The entire staff and management was very kind as we asked questions and I got my picture taken with the white board stating I was Tom Terrific from Tampa, Florida. My brother said there may be only one pinball arcade that was larger and it resides in Los Angeles. I loved Past Times and it seems like so did all the other people. I highly recommend it for a date, a great family night out or even as a solo venture. Open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Past Times - 5 Stars !

I am not a member of this club, but I was asked to come to dinner with two members of this club. I don't know what the membership includes, but I would certainly never pay a membership fee to eat here. Service was lousy, and they weren't very busy. It took us about 20 minutes to get menus and another 20 minutes for our orders to be taken after we had made our selection. As a former waitress when I was in college, I know that when your table is looking around and no longer looking at menus, they are ready to order, and a good waitress will notice that and take your order when you are obviously ready to order. No one seem to care here. The entrées we wanted we're not available because they were allegedly sold out, but it was very early in the day so I find that hard to believe. Poor restaurant managing perhaps? When the food arrived, nothing was very good. We all had three different meals but none of us would ever order these meals again here. But then again, I would never eat here again even if a member asked me to come with them. I had heard this place had very good food, but that was not the case when I was here. Not sure if there are new cooks or what the case is, but I would not recommend this place.

I ended up taking my meal to-go and ate it later -- absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, the bartender completely changed the experience for me. She was a redhead working the bar around 7:30 PM, and from the moment I sat down, she was noticeably unwelcoming. I was literally the only person sitting at the bar, yet she barely checked on me, offered no conversation, and honestly came across with an attitude the entire time. As someone who has worked in the bartending industry myself and who travels often visiting different restaurants and bars, hospitality matters. A bartender sets the tone for the entire experience, especially for solo guests. Sitting alone at a bar can already feel awkward enough, and a warm, welcoming attitude goes a long way. I still tipped her generously despite the experience, because that's just who I am, but management should really pay attention to how guests are being treated behind the bar. It's disappointing because I truly loved the place itself and wanted to give it a full 5 stars. With better customer interaction from the bartender, this place would easily deserve it. Chipper's Bar & Grill, where the drinks are overpriced, the food is lackluster, and the ambiance?…read moreWell, it's like if you took the local police blotter, sprinkled in a few late-night soap operas, and added a dash of "drama-filled, drug-fueled weekend vibes." First, let's start with the drinks, because we have to talk about this. I'm not saying they're charging you rent for a drink, but I'm starting to feel like I'm paying off a mortgage every time I get a beer here. $8 for a well drink? I know this is a bar, not a fine dining establishment, but come on, I'm not paying for a drink that costs more than my last therapy session. At this rate, I'm halfway to owning stock in the liquor company. And don't get me started on the "specialty cocktails." I ordered one once, and I swear, it came with a side of regret and financial anxiety. Now, let's talk about the food. It's not bad, per se--it's just that it's, well, lackluster. Like, imagine you're hungry and you want something to eat, but you also don't want to make any long-term commitments. You get a burger that's somehow both dry and greasy at the same time, with fries that taste like they've been waiting for you to show up since last Tuesday. It's the kind of food that leaves you thinking, "Did I just eat something, or did I just participate in a weird, short-lived experiment in disappointment?" But here's the real kicker--the atmosphere. You know when people say, "Oh, it's a fun, lively bar with a lot of character?" Yeah, well, Chipper's takes that and cranks it up to 11. If you're looking for a place that feels like it's been picked as the set for a low-budget cop drama, you've found your spot. I swear, every time I've gone in, there's at least one person arguing with the bartender, someone else looking for their "special something" (I'm being vague for a reason), and a few folks who definitely belong in the local police blotter. If you're hoping to enjoy a quiet drink while listening to the latest true crime podcast, well, guess what? You're living it. And the drama--oh, the drama. It's like a never-ending soap opera, with each scene getting crazier than the last. One minute, someone's telling the bartender they're going to "get the manager," the next, the guy in the corner is having an extremely loud conversation about his conspiracy theories. And don't even think about showing up with a date, because at least five people will whisper to you about the history of their last "complicated situation." It's like watching a reality show where no one is happy, but everyone's invested in someone else's mess. And let's be real, Chipper's isn't just a "place for a drink" -- it's a destination for chaos. If you enjoy watching the local drama unfold with the occasional police siren in the background, this is your place. For me, I'm just here for the show and to enjoy some overpriced drinks that make me feel like I'm living the high life. So, is Chipper's Bar & Grill worth a visit? Sure--if you want to test your nerves, try not to get caught in someone else's drama, and pay more for a drink than you probably should. If you're into that kind of thing, then welcome to the wildest Tuesday night of your life.
