One of the docents told me that it is so packed that people can barely move through sometimes on the weekends. That said, I might suggest offering a slight discount rate for coming on a weekday. Even a couple bucks cheaper as an incentive to get people to come when it's less busy. I love the history and I love the thought and time that was put into each of the displays. Very interesting history and I know that I barely scratched the surface learning about this prominent Youngstown family. Loved the mid-century modern displays too. I'm sure it's appealing to my generation and older, because all of it is very familiar. Everyone who works here is very friendly. The gift shop sells some really cool vintage things and it is worth a look. I was excited to see that it was next to the Wick House, which is (or at least it was 30 years ago) a women's dorm where my friend once lived, so it was nostalgic to see that building. I hadn't realized it would be right next door. I believe that family was on the Titanic if my memory serves me correctly. Anyhow- do try to come during Christmastime to visit the Arns Museum. It's a great piece of local history.

The culmination of one man's efforts to preserve the quickly disappearing industrial history of the Mahoning Valley region, it is an amazing what can been done with dedication to mission and perseverance. This is no unfeeling static display with labels, it's a living, breathing reminder of the importance that steel once had in this region and our country. This means it can be a gritty, occasionally dirty place....but that doesn't mean it still can't teach folks of all ages amazing lessons. Unlike other steam locomotive experiences, this is steam in a small package, and #58's smaller size and simple construction makes it a particularly good for those who home school, as children can see all its working parts at their level, learning science, history and the importance of hard work in one package. I'd honestly be curious to know just how many locals know that this place is still in operation. I mean, this place has been around FOREVER. They do a pretty good job with dramas, especially when hosted in the smaller more intimate theater on the base floor. Where things get blurry is in the big theater upstairs. The entire property is in desperate need of some TLC... Firstly the Youngstown Playhouse is square in the middle of a pretty bad neighborhood, so don't linger around the area. Secondly, the building & property have been allowed to fall into a pretty significant state of disrepair, however, it is much nicer on the inside. It's really a shame, moreover, you can tell this place used to be pretty special in it's hay-day. Thirdly, the biggest issue is their sound system- it's awful. Every time I have seen a musical here I can't understand half the lyrics. The sound just comes out distorted. Do yourself a solid, come see a drama or comedy & you will have a good time, just pass on the musicals until they upgrade their sound system.

Galleries show only artwork by Americans, the only museum of its kind in the U.S. One gallery is artwork showing Native Americans. Others showed large wall paintings and smaller paintings and some sculptures. The newest display of local artists runs through February 25, 2026. Lovely gift shop. Free. Check it out.
